Chaos erupts at coalition meeting between Atiku, Peter Obi, Ameachi

A coalition meeting involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party (LP) 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and other prominent politicians have descended into chaos following a disagreement over representation for Jigawa State.

TheNewsGuru learnt that tensions rose at the ongoing coalition meeting at the Abuja Continental Hotel, organised by the National Political Consultative Group (North), when former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, announced a delegate to speak for the state.

Several delegates from Jigawa stormed the stage in protest, preventing an individual from speaking and demanding that they would not be represented by those who had been named.

As the confrontation escalated, security personnel, including members of the Nigerian Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and private guards, swiftly formed a protective barrier around key figures such as Atiku, Amaechi, and others.

Calm was restored after several minutes of appeals, as the son of former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, Mustapha, along with another delegate, was chosen to speak on behalf of the state.

  • Setback for anti-Tinubu coalition as Peter Obi confirms 2027 bid on Labour Party platform

Setback for anti-Tinubu coalition as Peter Obi confirms 2027 bid on Labour Party platform

The prospect of a united opposition front against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) may have hit a stumbling block, following Peter Obi’s declaration that he will contest the 2027 general election under the Labour Party (LP) banner.

Obi, who was the LP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, made the announcement during a conversation with a group of young supporters in a video shared via the party’s WhatsApp platform and captured by Danroyce TV on Saturday.

In the video, Obi reaffirmed his commitment to the Labour Party, saying, “I will still continue to run in the Labour Party. I’m a member of the Labour Party,” when asked about his political plans for 2027.

He also accused the federal government of orchestrating the internal crises currently affecting both the LP and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). “What is happening in the Labour Party and the PDP is caused by the government. Quote me anywhere,” Obi stated.

Citing a past example under President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, he recalled how efforts were made to resolve party conflicts through executive intervention, contrasting it with the current political climate. “Today, there are problems in all the parties. These are deliberately created issues caused by the system. It’s part of what I want to fix if given the chance. You can’t have a functioning democracy without strong opposition,” he said.

Obi also called on Nigerians, especially the youth, to stay engaged and ensure their votes count, emphasizing that electoral integrity ultimately rests with the people. He encouraged voters not to be disheartened, noting that efforts toward meaningful change will always face resistance from those benefiting from the current system.

On leadership renewal, Obi advocated for a retirement age for politicians, revealing that he would be 65 by the time of the 2027 elections and does not intend to continue contesting into his 70s.

His remarks come amid ongoing speculation about a broad opposition alliance involving figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. The coalition is reportedly considering the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a potential platform for the 2027 race.

Obi’s decision to remain with the Labour Party signals a possible fragmentation of opposition efforts, potentially weakening any unified challenge to the APC in the next election cycle.

Bianca Ojukwu reveals what really happened during Peter Obi’s encounter with Tinubu in Rome

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has offered clarity on the much-discussed meeting between former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Vatican.

In a Facebook post titled “The Inside Story: How It All Went Down in Rome,” published on May 22, 2025, Bianca recounted the events during the installation mass of Pope Leo XIV at St. Peter’s Basilica. According to her, after spotting Obi and former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi already seated, she went over to greet them. The pair then chose to accompany her to pay their respects to the President.

“The President welcomed them warmly and with good humor. After the brief exchange, they both returned to their seats. Thankfully, this time there was no ‘Scusi’ moment like during Pope Francis’ funeral mass, where a priest had to call politicians to order. Everything went smoothly and respectfully,” she wrote.

Bianca criticized the overblown reaction on social media, saying the simple gesture of greeting the President—an elder and national leader—had been unnecessarily politicized and misinterpreted.

“I was honestly surprised by the uproar. A polite greeting, deeply rooted in African tradition, has been twisted into political drama. Many just wanted to create a mountain out of a molehill. Let’s all calm down,” she urged.

Bianca praised the Vatican event as a unifying experience and emphasized the symbolic importance of a Muslim president attending a significant Catholic mass—a moment she said showcased religious harmony and coexistence.

She also spoke admiringly of President Tinubu’s composure and endurance throughout the hours-long mass under the hot sun, noting that he refused offers of a sunshade and remained engaged throughout the ceremony. After the mass, Tinubu took time to interact warmly with Nigerian priests and seminarians, posing for selfies and greeting everyone who approached him.

Bianca humorously noted that Tinubu’s stylish appearance in a Western suit made a strong impression, as many Nigerians are more accustomed to seeing him in traditional attire.

Reflecting on the overall experience, she shared a personal anecdote about someone fainting from the heat during the mass and praised Seyi Tinubu for rushing to help with water before emergency services arrived—contrasting the quiet compassion of the moment with the trend of recording distress situations for social media.

She concluded her post by highlighting the dignity and discipline of the Nigerian delegation, the spiritual weight of the occasion, and her own excitement at capturing key moments with her phone camera.

“Vatican ’25 has been a profound experience. I feel truly blessed to have witnessed such a historic moment,” she wrote, signing off with a nod to the famous music video credit: “Ms B shot it!”

Peter Obi speaks on meeting President Tinubu over ₦225 billion debt crisis involving Fidelity Bank

The presidential candidate of the Labour party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has strongly denied reports alleging a secret meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Rome over a purported ₦225 billion debt crisis involving Fidelity Bank.

TheNewsGuru reports that the former Anambra governor, in a statement issued on Thursday, described the claims as baseless, malicious, and entirely false.

The presidential candidate claimed that the allegations were part of a blackmail campaign designed to damage his reputation

He said, “It is now clear that the biggest business for blackmailers is to attack me from every negative angle imaginable.

“Even my recent solemn spiritual journey to Rome has been twisted into yet another blackmail campaign by merchants seemingly paid to propagate anything negative against me.”

Obi further denied the claims made by what he called a “self-proclaimed blackmailer-in-chief,” who alleged that he travelled to Rome to meet President Tinubu in connection with Fidelity Bank.

“One such individual, whose life appears consumed by blackmail, falsely alleged that I travelled to Rome to hold a private meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding a purported ₦225 billion debt crisis involving Fidelity Bank,” he said. “These claims are not only baseless and malicious, but entirely false.”

Clarifying his movements, Obi explained that he was in Rome on May 9th to attend the lying-in -state of Pope Francis and later returned to Nigeria via London.

“Let me state categorically: I have never sought an audience with, nor met, President Tinubu since he assumed office—except for a brief moment, lasting no more than a minute, at the arena of Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome during the inauguration Mass of Pope Leo XIV,” Obi stated. “I was seated behind and, out of respect, greeted him and other dignitaries present.”

The former governor also addressed claims that he owns Fidelity Bank.

“For the record, I do not own Fidelity Bank,” he clarified. “Throughout my career, I have served as Chairman or Director of three banks or financial institutions, including Fidelity. Fidelity has over 500,000 shareholders, none of whom holds a majority stake.”

Obi condemned what he described as deliberate efforts to destabilize and cause distress to hardworking Nigerians through lies and blackmail.

“What this blackmailer seeks is to harm these hardworking Nigerians and cause them needless distress,” he said.

“To those peddling these falsehoods, and engaging in blackmail, I offer a simple prayer: May God grant you the virtues of gratitude and understanding to know that we came here with nothing and will go with nothing.”

Although, the former governor did not mention names, one of those who posted that he went to Rome to meet the president is the former social media aide to President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri.

Obi remains with Labour Party – Obedient Movement reacts to coalition speculations

The Obidient Movement says Mr Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) standard bearer of the 2023 general election is still with the party and has not joined any coalition.

The Director, Strategic Communication and Media, Obidient Movement, Nana Kazaure, made this known in a statement signed on Monday in Abuja while reacting to speculations by some media reports.

According to Kazaure, Mr Peter Obi remains in the Labour party and if ever this changes, he will make that announcement himself.

He said that the movement had been inundated with calls from LP members regarding  media publication  that Obi had been offered the running mate position to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in a new coalition being formed ahead of 2027.

“Even as we know that the publication is imaginary to the author, we are tempted not to ignore it because of the possible far-reaching misconception it will have in the public space.

“While frank and cordial engagements with our partners and stakeholders towards a coalition continue amicably, the Obidient Movement would like to state emphatically that there is no truth or basis to the reports whatsoever.

“Without any risk of contradiction, we would like to reiterate that Mr Obi has maintained that his objective and his involvement in a coalition is to provide a united front against bad governance.

“To tackle issues of bad governance, corruption, hunger, poverty, poor healthcare, out of school children and the myriad of other problems daily afflicting the people of Nigeria.”

Kazaure said that the movement wanted politics that was progressive, standing firmly with the people and serving the great people of Nigeria and not politics just for the sake of grabbing power.

The movement, therefore, advised against sensationalism and speculation.

“At this difficult time, all Nigerians and the Media, inclusive, should emphasise and contribute to building a better country.”

  • 2027: Count me out of any coalition that’s not against hunger, poverty Peter Obi declares

2027: Count me out of any coalition that’s not against hunger, poverty Peter Obi declares

As rumours of a possible coalition among opposition leaders to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has said that the only coalition he is interested in is the one against hunger, poverty, and the terrible state of healthcare and education in Nigeria.

Obi, who visited the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Kubwa in Abuja on Monday, emphasised that he was not desperate for any position.

“The only coalition I am interested in is the one against hunger, poverty, and the bad state of healthcare and education in the country. I am not desperate for any position,” he said.

Obi came third behind President Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election, with many believing that a coalition between him, Atiku, and other opposition parties will defeat Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

The former governor of Anambra State dismissed a deal to run as a vice presidential candidate in 2027, insisting that those saying he had an agreement to deputise anyone were playing politics of selfish ambitions detrimental to the growth of the country.

Obi also made a financial donation to a school project in the diocese.

He said that because the government has failed woefully to deliver free and qualitative basic education, the church had had to bear the huge burden.

Obi was seen with a former governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, exchanging pleasantries with President Tinubu after the inauguration Mass of Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican on Sunday.

Commenting on that, the former Anambra governor said that he was not an enemy of the President and only accorded the necessary courtesy to him in Rome as protocol demanded.

He reemphasised that the only enemy he has is corruption and corrupt leaders who have made life difficult for the Nigerian people.

He wrote, “President Bola Tinubu, Mr Peter Obi, the Labour Party Presidential candidate, and former Ekiti governor Kayode Fayemi met at Pope Leo XIV’s installation mass on Sunday in Rome.

“Fayemi sighted President Tinubu, where he sat with other leaders and asked Obi to follow him to pay homage to the Nigerian leader. Obi agreed.

“On getting to the President, Fayemi broke the ice between Obi and Tinubu. He said:

“Mr. President, welcome to our church, and thank you for honouring the Pope with your presence.”

“President Tinubu, ever quick-witted, responded: “I should be the one welcoming you and Peter. I’m the Head of the Nigerian Delegation”.

“The President’s response cracked up Obi, who agreed with the President.

“Obi said: “Yes, indeed. We are members of your delegation”.

“Peter Obi and Fayemi are staunch Catholics and Papal knights.”

If I open my mouth, they will smell like rotten eggs – Abure threatens to expose Obi, Otti

Julius Abure, the Labour Party National Chairman, has threatened to expose the presidential candidate of the party in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi and other former aspirants.

Abure in a video broadcast by Symfoni on Tuesday, addressed party members in the Federal Capital Territory and responded to ongoing corruption allegations within the party’s leadership, where he demanded those behind the allegations to provide evidence of any money allegedly given to him or the party during the last general elections.

Abure in his statement denied receiving any funds for personal use from any of the party’s candidates, including Obi.

“I want to challenge all of them—from Peter Obi down that contested the election. Let any of them come out and tell the world what they personally gave to me or to the party,” Abure declared.

If they have evidence, let them present it. If they don’t, let them forever hold their peace.”

He criticized what he described as “cowardly whispers” of corruption and accused detractors of hiding behind the media rather than confronting the party leadership directly.

The party chairman who hinted at holding a world press conference, promised to publicly expose individuals within the party’s opposing faction, adding that his silence was out of a sense of leadership and the hope for reconciliation, but warned that continued provocation would force him to speak out.

When people were talking about agents and money for agents, I kept quiet. I believe that the good, the bad, and the ugly are mine to manage. But now, some are going beyond their boundaries,” he said.

“I am waiting for them to make the next move. And when I open my mouth, wherever they go, they will smell like rotten eggs that no one will buy.”

Abure also took a swipe at Abia State Governor Alex Otti—the Labour Party’s only elected governor—accusing him of failing to contribute financially to the party during the elections.

Look at the governor that is jumping like a cricket from one point to another. We didn’t collect a dime from him,” he said.

When I met him at Transcorp, he asked me, ‘Chairman, what do I do for you?’ I said, ‘Nothing. Use your money for your election.’”
