I will do what I did in Anambra if elected president – Peter Obi

Mr Peter Obi, presidential aspirant for the 2023 general elections on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said he will replicate what he did in Anambra State as Governor if he is elected president.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Obi stated this at a meeting with stakeholders and delegates of the PDP from Sokoto and Zamfara states on Thursday at the party Secretariat in Sokoto.

The former Governor of Anambra declared that he has the capacity to fix the political and socioeconomic challenges of Nigeria and that he will prioritise poverty reduction through tackling unemployment if elected president.

Obi stressed on the need for Nigerians to make informed decision that would produce a president with capacity to fix the socioeconomic and political challenges bedevilling the country.

“I served as the Governor of Anambra state for eight years, I built stronger institutions in the state, promising to replicate such as president of the country when elected.

”I was the Vice Presidential candidate with Atiku Abubakar on the platform of PDP in 2019 and I leveraged on his experience as a captain with focus, integrity, tested resource management skills and contentment to achieve the feat.

”A society will work, only if people pursue the cause with strong determination,” Obi said.

He noted that Nigeria had potentialities and human resources that if maximally exploited would ensure strong economic and social institutions, as obtained in other developed nations.

According him, when he was a governor, his administration implemented policies that catered for workers salary, pensions and gratuity payments.

The presidential aspirant added that he did not leave outstanding along with contract payments.

He stressed that tackling unemployment and ensuring stronger institutions would eliminate security challenges and facilitate rapid development.

Earlier, the Sokoto State Deputy Chairman of PDP, Alhaji Zaki Bishiri, welcomed Obi to the state, describing him as an astute economist capable of transforming the nation’s challenges in recognition of his experience.

Bishiri assured delegates’ supports toward party success in future elections.

He said Obi was among the few individuals that would shape Nigeria and strengthen the nation’s potentialities.

  • Obi for President, Zulum for Vice President – By Hope Eghagha

Obi for President, Zulum for Vice President – By Hope Eghagha

The proper and complete title of my essay is ‘Peter Obi for President, Babagana Zulum for Vice President – a Proposal by an idealist! One of the first responses I received when I published the title online was ‘If wishes were horses, beggars would ride! I can imagine he followed that post with a foxy chuckle. But I know I will chuckle last. We are in desperate times. We need a desperate remedy. We can no longer commit the future of this country to practicing politicians who have turned the theatre of politics into an absurd one! Politics is too serious a business to be left to politicians who often think about the next elections and the views of the imaginary ‘people! Let us give a thought to forming a Government of National Unity using the framework of the 2023 elections, with both parties sheathing their swords for the survival of the country, led by the incumbent President who I believe would like to reunite the country after bombing our cultural diversity with nepotic appointments and body language!

It is time to think out of the box. We are in an emergency. If Nigeria must survive and grow, if Nigeria must attain its full potential, then we must work on the process of producing leaders. The American model of democracy in terms of the power of the majority always having its way has not worked for us. We are not sure of the veracity of population claims. Population figures have been politicized. For example, to contend and stick to the point that the north has a greater population and must always produce the President of the country is a recipe for a split of the federation. I have other suggestions about constituting the cabinet once my suggested candidates emerge as leaders. Apart from constituting a youthful cabinet, women with a solid background should work as Ministers. I am sure some politicians reading this would say I am crazy. I am not. I am very sane and patriotic!

Another reaction I received was that the two men are from different political parties. And I said so? Is there any real difference between APC and PDP? The current Chairman of APC was a member of PDP before he decamped. The politicians see the political parties as Special Purpose Vehicles. My proposal is therefore a patriotic extension of that perception. Besides, I had preceded my submission with a potent rider: we are in desperate times; we need desperate solutions. A combination of these two men in the presidency with the hope that Zulum will succeed Obi after eight years will end the unhealthy jostling and bustling currently distorting the national space. To achieve this, we need the cooperation of all stakeholders, acting on the Doctrine of Necessity. At the forefront of this effort should be President Muhammadu Buhari. But because I am almost certain that he will not initiate such a move, I am calling on the Sultan of Sokoto, Ooni of Ife, Obi of Onitsha, Orodje of Okpe, Oba of Benin, Middle Belt Forum, the Etsu Nupe, Arewa Consultative Forum, Afenifere, Ohaeneze Igbo, PANDEF, Chief E.K. Clark, Christian Association of Nigeria, MURIC, and other patriots to summon a national meeting and give this proposal serious thought. Recall that after the June 12 debacle, it was such a consensus that produced two persons of Yoruba extraction that gave way for an Obasanjo Presidency. The denial of the presidency to MKO Abiola and his subsequent death created a big tension in Yorubaland, his own folks who did not massively support him ab initio. We need that type of intervention again. Nigeria is crumbling. Nigeria is bleeding. Nigeria is dying. The politicians who led us into this cesspit cannot redeem us from it!

In proposing these two men, let me state clearly that I have met Peter Obi only occasionally, twice at state functions and often at the airport where we flew together from Lagos to Asaba or from Asaba to Lagos. He would always stay with us in the open lounge, avoiding the VIP lounge, carrying his bag even as Governor. He would hold discussions with ordinary people anywhere and everywhere. At a state function where he had to wait for the event to start, he sat with his State Commissioners, and they were having discussions there in a circle in the open and he sat there like an ordinary mortal, not specially dressed with the airs of a pompous emperor. Not a tin god! I have not met Zulum in person. I have read about both men and think that they can change the fortunes of the country, if we work out a joint ticket on the platform of PDP, APC having just completed a two-term tenure in office.

Peter Obi was Governor of Anambra State for eight years. He gave a good account of himself as the Number One Citizen of the state in terms of accountability, projects and the entrenchment of the rules of engagement. He brought decency into governance. He preached and practiced prudence, cutting costs and removing wastes. He has struck a chord with the people of Nigeria, especially the young people across the country. He has a different perspective to governance. He has put himself forward to be President and has made some definite promises about changing the Nigerian story. He has spoken about ‘investing in education and exporting graduates’ and increasing diaspora remittance from $20bn’. Add to these the current clamour in the southern part of the country that the presidency should rotate south, particularly to Southeast, and give the Igbo people a sense of belonging. Let us give Peter Obi a chance.

Professor Babagana Zulum is incumbent Governor of the troubled State of Borno. In the midst of hunger, poverty, and the highest level of insecurity, he has governed well to the satisfaction of both the ruling party and the opposition in the state. He has concentrated on his job and gained a huge following across the country. He is from the north. To work out an agreement that he should run with Obi in 2023 would be putting two men who have a made a name in the public sphere as good administrators would reduce ethnic tension, guarantee a solid future and promote national cohesion.

I got responses to the proposal online, ranging from the skeptical to the supportive. Lovely Nyoreme Obodozie asked: ‘Omo! Will they allow this sweet combo? Anthony Ogene wrote: ‘What a fine combination! But can it become a reality? Both are not moneybags and power drunk! Yet another responder Angela Agoawike wrote: ‘Excellent combination for the sake of Nigeria! Aguonye Onyema George summed it up: ‘Government of National Unity. We need it now! Need I say more?

2023: It’s presidential ticket or nothing for Peter Obi, Support group insists

A group under the aegis of Peter Obi Support Network (POSN) has said their group won’t accept anything short of Presidential ticket for their candidate, Peter Obi.

TheNewsGuru.com reports the group described media reports making the rounds that Mr Peter Obi was being considered for Vice presidential slot to another aspirant as “arrant nonsense”.

Obi’s ambition, the group noted, remains not negotiable, hence warned the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), against playing games with the unity of Nigeria by contemplating to impose and manipulate a northerner on the members.

According to a statement from Obi’s support group signed by its spokesman Sani Saeed Altukry, such move will adversely affect the survival, future and electoral fortunes of the party, especially at the 2023 presidential elections in particular and the entire general election.

It will also rock the already shaky foundations of the country beyond the election cycle

The group therefore asked Mr Obi, who has mass appeal and loved by Nigerians to consider Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, the former Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed as potential running mates when the time comes.

They noted that, “our attention has been drawn to a media report that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, one of the presidential aspirants on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has opted for the former governor of Anambra state, Peter Obi as running mate again, ahead of the 2023 Presidential race.

“We consider the report – which we understand is planted in a national newspaper as ‘arrant nonsense!””

“Peter Obi’s presidential ambition is not negotiable because he has repeatedly assured us and other Nigerians that have consulted with him on the matter that he is in the presidential race to win.

“The report that Atiku is considering Obi as a running mate is ‘fake news’ obviously planted to test waters and deceive millions of Nigerians that see Peter Obi’s presidency as the last hope to rescue Nigeria.

“However, we are not surprised because Nigerians are aware that Atiku appreciates Obi’s sterling presidential qualities which was why he chose Obi as running mate in 2019.

“Finally, we hereby demand that the PDP party leadership must speak out immediately on the issue of zoning rather than playing hide-and-seek with the matter. The party leadership will be hearing from us on this important issue very soon because any attempt to foist a northern candidate on the party will have adverse effects on the future of the party and on the already shaky unity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Why consensus is not solution to Nigeria’s challenges – Peter Obi

Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi has declared the consensus arrangement bandied by some presidential aspirants from the north was not the answer to the country’s many problems.

Obi, who stated this at a meeting with PDP leaders in Akure, Ondo State, stressed that the consensus option would not work for Nigeria at this time.

He also decried the neglect of the Akure-Ado Ekiti road, saying the road could be fixed with N5 billion.

The presidential aspirant urged Nigerians to vote out the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2023, stating that the party had driven the country backwards.

The quartet of former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Sokoto State Governor, his Bauchi State counterpart, Bala Mohammed and the former Managing Director of FSB International Bank, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, are the proponents of the consensus arrangement.

However, the Northern elders on Thursday announced the endorsement of Saraki and Mohammed as the consensus candidates for the region.

The announcement did not go down well with Tambuwal and Hayatu-deen who had threatened to back out of the arrangement.

Obi said: “Nigeria is in its darkest days. The country is collapsing and the only thing we are hearing is kidnapping, banditry poverty.

“Schools are shut down, killings are everywhere and this is the cumulative effect of the bad leadership.

”What the country needs at this particular period is somebody who can turn around the economy of the country and not a consensus candidate

“With just N5 billion, the Akure/Ado-Ekiti road will be fixed, but all this money they are borrowing is for consumption. The only thing you hear is the sharing formula, not production formula.”

2023 Elections: I’II fix Nigeria in 4 years-Peter Obi brags

Former Governor of Anambra state and people’s Democratic party (PDP) presidential aspirant Mr Obi has berated Nigeria’s current government for slacking in fixing the country’s economic and security problems.

Obi has now promised the entirety of the public a better country in terms of economic and security if given the mandate to do so.

Obi made this revelations at the headquarters of Abia state PDP in Umuahia, on Thursday when he visited to seek the support of delegates for his presidential aspiration against the party convention.

Obi, who listed his plans for Nigeria, if elected as president, said he is in the race to reset Nigeria for the upliftment of the citizens.

He promised that in just four years, Nigeria would achieve an enviable height in all fields, if he wins the Presidency of the nation and make Nigeria a producer, not just a consumer of products.

Obi frowned at the mismanagement of public funds by different administrations promised to end the culture of money sharing explaining that the country’s resources will be used for the country.

He acknowledged that the only hurdle before him is the PDP presidential primary election after which he would defeat the candidates of other political parties.

He appealed for the support of Abia State delegates and those from other States on the day of primary polls.

He reflected on his achievements as governor which he said, made Anambra one of the fastest moving economies in Africa and promised to replicate his performance in Anambra if he gets to Aso rock.

He further identified hunger and unemployment as the breeding grounds for criminality, adding that Nigeria’s export would increase under his leadership.

The Chairman of PDP in Abia, Hon Asiforo Okere described Obi as a perfect gentleman who is capable of doing the job.

Okere noted that Obi is a fine material in whom the South-East is very proud of.

Okere assured Obi that delegates from Abia would do the needful on the day of the primary election.

2023: I will make Nigeria productive if elected president – Peter Obi vows

A presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Peter Obi, has said he will initiate policies and programmes that will transform Nigeria from a “consumption economy to productive one”.

Obi said this on Thursday, when he came for consultation with Abia PDP chieftains at the state Secretariat in Umuahia.
He said that the nation had abundant resources waiting to be harnessed for rapid economic advancement.

He said: “I know the problems of this country. I know how they can be solved and the areas we need to invest in.

“We want to make this country productive and my campaign has been changing from consumption to productive economy.

“We have to stop fighting over sharing formula and start producing.”

Obi further said there was need to address the issue of cost of governance, debt and unemployment, through the prioritisation of the nation’s expenditure.

He appealed to the electorate to elect individuals that would create a society where people’s talent and hardwork would match up their opportunities.

Earlier, Dr Doyin Okupe, a former Presidential Spokesman to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, described Obi as versed in business, management and economic development.

He said the presidential hopeful had the pedigree, education, knowledge and business acumen to meet the enormous responsibilities associated with governing the country.

Okupe recently announced to the media his decision to step down his presidential ambition to support Obi.

Responding, the state Chairman of the party, Chief Alwell Okere, said that Obi had proven to be the pride of Igboland through his numerous achievements.

Okere said that he had demonstrated the principle of good leadership in the various responsibilities he had held, especially as the governor of Anambra.

He prayed God to grant Obi success in his endeavours, adding that “at the right time, Abia will speak”.

Obi was the presidential running mate to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in 2019.

  • 2023: Forget your interest, support Peter Obi, POSN tells Atiku

2023: Forget your interest, support Peter Obi, POSN tells Atiku

The Peter Obi Support Network has urged former Nigeria’s Vice President and presidential hopeful seeking for party ticket under Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to forget his ambition and support former Anambra Governor, Peter Obi in his quest to be the party’s flag bearer.

Recall that both candidates have registered their interest in the country’s presidency and have been preparing for the forthcoming election in 2023.

The Peter Obi group had written a letter to Atiku urging him to step down his ambition in the interest of equity, justice and fairness.

The message was signed by the group’s Media and Communications Committee members, namely: Prince Emeka Kalu, Alhaji Kabir Garba, Adigun Makanjuola, Mr Marcel Ngogbehei and Comrade Sani Saeed Altukry.

The group said stepping down and supporting Obi would not only save the PDP and Nigeria, but also ensure that the Atiku/Obi ticket of 2019, which Nigerians missed, was returned to power in 2023 and ensure that their lofty manifesto was implemented for the benefit of all.

According to the group, the country as of today was in an extreme crisis, and it was at times like this that history and posterity recorded its greatest heroes and heroines.

It added that the zoning arrangement already in place put Peter Obi in the front runner as a good candidate from the South-East.

It urged Nigerians not to repeat the mistakes of 2015, adding that nobody should wish Nigerians another eight years of bad governance.

The group noted that if the PDP conceded its ticket to the South-East, it would be sending a message that would drown the APC

The statement read in part, “We write on behalf of millions of our members across Nigeria to call on you, our Party Leader, H.E Alhaji Atiku Abubakar (GCON), to seize the moment and show again the leadership you ably demonstrated in 2019 when you rose above primordial considerations to choose Mr. Peter Obi as the PDP Vice-Presidential Candidate; an action that got the entire country ‘Atikulated & Obligated.’

“The Atiku/Obi 2019 ticket has gone down in history as Nigeria’s most inspiring presidential ticket of all time, which in our view was an unfairly denied victory.

“Regardless of the foregoing, our relationship with you will last forever; and for the record, all of us in POSN were Atikulated & Obligated in 2019. Hence, for us, you are part and indeed the head of our family.

“As you are aware, Nigeria had President Olusegun Obasanjo (Southwest, 1999–2007) and President Goodluck Jonathan (South-south, 2010–2015), leaving the South-East outstanding.

“The All Progressives Congress has zoned its 2023 presidential ticket to the South; therefore, the PDP has no reason not to follow suit as a matter of law. To do otherwise will mean working against equity and fairness and inviting avoidable litigation and possible truncation of the PDP’s participation in the 2023 presidential election, which will give the APC a ‘walk-over-victory.’

“Stepping down and supporting Peter Obi will not only save the PDP and Nigeria, but also ensure that the Atiku/Obi ticket of 2019, which Nigerians so dearly missed, is returned to power in 2023 and ensure that their lofty manifesto is implemented for the benefit of all.”
  • 2023: What Nigerians should look for in presidential candidate – Peter Obi

2023: What Nigerians should look for in presidential candidate – Peter Obi

Nigerians should stop looking for consensus candidate and look for “problem solvers’’ as presidential materials for 2023.

Mr Peter Obi, Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential aspirant made the declaration at Abakaliki on Tuesday, while addressing newsmen during his consultation with PDP faithful in Ebonyi.

“Nigerians want a person who will start solving the myriad of problems facing the country.

“They want someone who will secure lives and property; make the country productive; pull the citizens out of poverty, among other capabilities.

“This is not an issue of delegates because those with large numbers of delegates are still affected by the nation’s problems,’’ he said.

Obi was running mate to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar on the platform of the PDP at the 2019 presidential election. Abubakar has also indicated interest to run in the 2023 race,

Obi stressed that the sentiment of consensus candidate should not be brought to the front burner at this time in the nation’s political history.

He said the geo-political zone of a candidate should not also amount to much as “what Nigeria needs is to salvage the country.

“It is important to consider where people come from in a diverse country such as ours for equity’s sake.

“The country, however, needs someone now who will start creating wealth to make the economy viable.

“I can fix this country having a record of being a trader, of operating in the corporate world, and being a governor among other antecedents,’’ he said.

Obi clarified issues concerning his earlier support for fellow aspirant, Alhaji Abubakar, whom he described as a unifier.

“The PDP has credible aspirants who can lead the country and solve its problems,’’ Obi stressed.
