Wike exposes former Rivers governor, Odili, lists juicy positions his family members are occupying

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has slammed the former governor of Rivers State, Peter Odili, describing him as a ‘General Overseer’ who has turned the state into his private estate.

TheNewsGuru.com(TNG) reports that Wike, while speaking at the Special Thanksgiving Service organized by Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, at the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Oro-Igwe/Eliogbolo Archdeaconry Church of the Holy Spirit, Eliozu Parish, Port Harcourt on Sunday, reacted to Odili’s accusations of capturing the state as a ‘private estate’.

The former Rivers governor had said that Fubara summoned unusual fortitude to confront Wike’s quest of capturing the state through ferocious but unnecessary political war.

Responding, Wike, said that Odili’s wife and children hold high-level positions in the state.

He said, “Between him and myself, who has turned Rivers State to his personal estate? His wife is a Chairman of Governing Council, his daughter is a commissioner, his other daughter is a judge and he is the general overseer.

“Who has now turned Rivers State to his private estate? I am sure if care is not taken, if there is a chance, he can even arrange a marriage for the governor.

“It was his nephew, his late senior brother’s son, that was recommended for commissioner. He took the slot and gave it to his own daughter.

“Someone who didn’t remember to stand for the son of his late elder brother, is that an elder statesman?”

Peter Odili endorses Fubara political leader of Rivers

Former Governor of Rivers State, Dr Peter Odili has endorsed the incumbent Governor of the State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara as the political leader of the State.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Dr Odili made the endorsement in his speech at the commissioning of the Comprehensive Primary Healthcare Centre in Ndoni Town, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State on Thursday.

The Comprehensive Primary Healthcare Centre was built and donated to the State Government by the PAMO Educational Foundation, with the former Governor of Rivers State, Dr Peter Odili, as its founder.

Odili said he was motivated to undertake the project because two years ago, when flood ravaged Ndoni Town, the health centre in the community was destroyed, leaving people within 50 kilometer radius without immediate healthcare services.

Dr Odili, who urged the Governor to continue in his trajectory of people-oriented projects execution, touching the lives of the people directly with his governance, declared that Governor Fubara is the political leader of the State, insisting that Rivers people will continue to stand with him.

At the commissioning of the project, Governor Fubara restated his Administration’s firm support to President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government people-oriented policies aimed at improving the well-being of the people and providing critical social services to Nigerians.

Governor Fubara also emphasised that his Administration was determined to build an egalitarian society where people can freely voice their opinions, be bold to criticise his Government constructively to further advance good governance.

The Governor insisted that nothing close to the use of plain cloth security officers to intimidate or harass the citizenry will be associated with his Administration.

Governor Fubara said, “But I thank God that whatever it is they think or imagined we are doing, we are happy we are touching lives. Everyone can attest to it. But one critical project, one specific aspect of it is the well-being of our people.

“We made a promise to Mr. President to support him, and we will continue to support him. How do we support him?

“It is to ensure that the welfare of our people is provided for. It is to ensure that our people, those in critical need, we make them happy in this harsh economic situation.

“If we cannot solve all the problems, at least, we will go as much as we can to mitigate those basic challenges. That is the only way to support Mr. President.”

Drawing attention to what his Administration is doing in the healthcare delivery, Governor Fubara said he increased the quota of employment of personnel into the health sector to 1,000 persons.

The action, he noted, was because the 200 personnel he met on assumption of duty was grossly inadequate compared to the prevailing needs in the sector.

Governor Fubara also made reference to the deplorable condition of over 340 primary healthcare centres across the State when he assumed office, and explained that commendable rehabilitation work was ongoing to ensure the facilities function optimally.

To achieve the needed transformation and provision of quality healthcare services, Governor Fubara said the contractors that handled the reconstruction of the zonal hospitals have been invited and directed to return to site to complete the projects.

He stressed that the initiative was meant to bridge the yawning gap between the primary and tertiary healthcare services in the State.

The Governor said, “But I’m happy with what the Executive Secretary of the State Primary Healthcare Board has said here today.

“On assumption of office, it was different from what we have recorded. We are giving hope to the people. We are not going to stop improving that sector every day, by the special grace of God.

“We’ve gone further to improve our healthcare services by promising our people not just promising, but ensuring that we’ll see it through, that all the zonal hospitals must be put back to function.

“We have invited all the contractors that were awarded those jobs. We have asked them to return back to site so that those facilities will function to provide quality services to our people.

“The Secretary mentioned about employment. When we came on board, the number I saw allocated to you was 200. But I’ve given you 1,000 medical doctors. That will tell you that we place importance on efficient healthcare services for our State.”

Governor Fubara acknowledged as ingenious the conviction of the PAMO Educational Foundation to undertake the construction of such health facility as a private citizen deploying personal resources to give back to society.

The Governor described the gesture as the best thing that has happened to the people, which is worthy of emulation, and urged members of the community to own the project by protecting it.

Governor Fubara took a swipe at those describing his Administration as clueless because it is not constructing roads to personal property or serving the interest of few individuals.

He insisted that he was elected to serve the general interest of Rivers people, improve their social status and make life comfortable for them.

The Governor also told local government chairmen pretending to be serving the people while worshipping the interest of one man, that they were digging a pit to bury their political career.

He particularly expressed surprise that Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government chairman was present at the event, and chastised him and some others for avoiding State Government functions.

Speaking on the project, the Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr Adaeze Oreh, explained that the health facility that seats on the island of Ndoni in the political Ward 14, has 20-bed spaces, and will meet 80 percent healthcare needs of the people.

Dr Oreh said the health facility will offer such services like antenatal and postnatal services, deliveries, immunization, cervical screening, hypertension and issues of tuberculosis and other levels of health education services.

In his welcome address, Chairman of Rivers State Electoral Commission (RISEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), said the day will be remembered and treasured in history that a man, Dr Peter Odili, a genius, with humanity impulse, had used his personal resources to build a state- of-the-art health facility with support from his wife, Justice Mary Odili.

Justice Enebeli said that the event demonstrated effective  Public-Private Partnership to build and donate the facility by PAMO Educational Foundation, adding that the health centre will serve people in all the 18 villages in Ndoni Town.

Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of Rivers State Primary Healthcare Management Board, Dr Kinikanwo Green, said the event aligns with the policy thrust of the Governor Fubara-led Administration that has committed so much resources and motivation to making the facilities in the health sector function optimally.

After commissioning the facility, Governor Fubara took a tour of the wards, laboratories and equipment, and also performed the official launch of the State Health Insurance Scheme at the centre.

Governor Fubara, while on his way to Ndoni Town, stopped over briefly in Elele Town at sighting the crowd of youths, women, men and traditional rulers, who had waited to receive him enroute Ndoni.

The Governor waved at them, walked up to the canopy sheltering the traditional rulers, paid his homage and received the kolanuts they offered him.

Political leaders like the Chairman of Ocabic Group, Eze Okey Okah; and former commissioner for information and communications, Barrister Emmanuel Okah; are among indigenes of Elele Town in Ikwerre Local Government Area who joined the jubilant crowd to receive the Governor.

2023: Peter Obi clears air on Odili being his classmate at CKC

The presidential candidate of Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi has cleared the air on the Peter Odili matter he cited as an example at the commissioning of a flyover in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Friday.

Many have countered him on social media platforms for saying the former Governor of Rivers State, Peter Odili, was his classmate at Christ the King College, CKC, in Onitsha.

Obi was urging people of Rivers State to vote for him in the February presidential election when he made the comment.

Obi said his comment on Odili at a function in Port Harcourt was misinterpreted.

However, the LP presidential candidate explained that he and Odili were alumni of the school, and not classmates.

In a series of tweets, Obi said he had described the former governor as a great footballer at CKC.

According to Obi: “My remarks when I visited Port Harcourt have been wrongly interpreted by some people.

“The former Governor of Rivers State, Dr Peter Odili and I, are among other prominent Nigerians that schooled in Christ the King College (CKC) Onitsha, and we remain alumni of the school.

“I did not say that former Governor Odili was my classmate, rather I said that he was a great footballer in my school, and we all cherished and had good memories of his football exploits when we got into the school.

“I was in CKC from 1973 to 1978 and Dr Peter Odili had graduated before I got into the school.”

  • Defamation: Supreme Court affirms N6bn in damages against ex-NIMASA DG, Dakuku Peterside

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a suit by former Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dakuku Peterside seeking to set aside a six billion naira damages awarded against him for defaming the character of Dr Peter Odili, former governor of Rivers State.

In a judgment delivered by Justice Adamu Jauro, the appeal by Dakuku Peterside was dismissed for want of merit.

The apex court upheld the decisions of the lower courts which imposed a fine of 6 billion naira against Peterside to be paid to Odili as compensation for his defamed character.

Odili had in October 2016 dragged Peterside to court demanding N6 billion as damages for character defamation.

In the suit, the former Rivers State governor had claimed that Peterside during a press conference in Port Harcourt defamed him in his allegations that Governor Nyesom Wike’s Supreme Court victory was hatched by him.

Take action against attacks on judiciary – Wike urges NBA

Gov.Nyesom Wike of Rivers has urged the leadership of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to go beyond issuing of statements, to taking concrete actions against attacks on the nation’s judiciary.

Wike gave the charge during the book presentation in honour of Justice Mary Peter-Odili as part of activities marking her retirement from the Supreme Court of Nigeria and her 70th Birthday celebration in Port Harcourt.

Wike, who disclosed this in a statement issued by Mr Kelvin Ebiri, his Special Assistant on Media, expressed regrets at the NBA’s lacklustre approach to social change, saying it was more of a disservice to the nation and exposed it to contempt.

He also expressed disagreement with some speakers on Thursday’s valedictory court session organised in honour of Justice Odili.

The speakers had blamed politicians for the challenges that the judiciary suffered.

The governor alleged that the Federal Government had in 2016, unleashed premeditated midnight raids on judges’ homes, including the Justices of the Supreme Court, in Abuja, Port Harcourt, Gombe, Kano, Enugu and Sokoto states.

He noted that when judges were lacking in courage and integrity, they easily gave up to improper pressure, influence and control, and the entire judiciary suffered.

Wike assured that if elected the President of Nigeria in 2023, he would work with the National Assembly to prioritise the welfare of judicial officers, including the provision of official cars and life-long accommodation “as being done in Rivers”.

Former Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Justice Mary Peter Odili, noted that Nigerian judges were among the best in the world, but they were never treated right.

Justice Odili, who was also the first lady of Rivers, between 1999 and 2007, expressed delight that some of her judgments had been published for the public to assess.

Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, described Justice Odili as an epitome of humility.

Chairman of the occasion and former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Onueze Okocha, SAN, noted that Justice Odili served the country meritoriously, honourably and without blemish to her character.

Governors present at the event were Dr.Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia); Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa); Mr. Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom); Sen. Douye Diri (Bayelsa); Samuel Ortom (Benue); Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu) and Seyi Makinde (Oyo).

BREAKING: Immigration releases ex-Governor Odili’s passport

The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has released the international passport it seized from a former Rivers Governor Peter Odili.

Adamu, in a motion he filed on Monday, exhibited a letter of request by Odili and other evidence showing that he has received the passport.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, before whom the case came up on Monday, noted that the fresh motion was not yet before the court.

Upon an oral application by Adamu, Justice Ekwo stood down proceedings briefly to enable Adamu get the motion from the court’s registry.

  • BREAKING: Court orders NIS to release ex-Rivers gov, Peter Odili’s passport within five days

BREAKING: Court orders NIS to release ex-Rivers gov, Peter Odili’s passport within five days

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and its Comptroller General, Idris Isah Jere to release the impounded international passports of a former governor of Rivers State, Peter Odili within five days.

Justice Inyang Ekwo handed out the order as a condition for the hearing of an application, filed by the NIS and its Comptroller General, for a stay of the court’s October 18, 2021 judgment, ordering them to release Odili’s passport and offer him a written apology.

Lawyer to the NIS and its Comptroller General, Ibrahim Etsu had told the court on Tuesday that his clients have filed an application seeking an order staying the execution of the judgment pending the determination of their appeal.

After listening to Etsu, Justice Ekwo said he would hear the application on the condition that the applicants first release Odili’s passport and deposit it with the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court within five days.

The judge then adjourned till January 13 for the hearing of the application.

Odili had earlier this year, sued the NIS and its Comptroller General, accusing them of unlawfully impounding his passport.

In a judgment on October 18, in the fundamental rights enforcement suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/965/2021, Justice Ekwo held among others, that the respondents (NIS and its Comptroller General breached Odili’s rights by impounding his passport without an order of court empowering them to so act.

The judge proceeded to order the respondents to offer the applicant an apology in written form.

In their notice of appeal filed on November 19 by their lawyer, Jimoh Adamu, the NIS and its Comptroller General want the Court of Appeal to set aside the October 18 judgment on the grounds that the judge erred in his interpretation of the law.

They raised two grounds of appeal, the first being that the trial judge was in error in assuming jurisdiction over the case despite its glaring defects.

Part of the defects, they argued, was that the applicant’s names on the suit were different from the names contained in the passport to which he was laying claim.

“The failure to comply with the provision of Section 109 of the Immigration Act 2015 rob the court below of the jurisdiction to hear and adjudicate on the suit,” they added.

On the second ground, the NIS and its Comptroller General argued that Justice Ekwo erred in law when he ordered them to “immediately release and return the applicant’s international passport, with number B50031305 to him, and to write an apology to the applicant for the embarrassment occasioned by the unlawful seizure of his international passport.”

They argued that since Odili’s name as reflected on the court documents were different from the name on the passport, it was impossible for them to hand the said passport to him.

“The respondent’s (Odili’s) names on record are different from the names on the international passport, accordingly the suit is incompetent.

“The respondent cannot be issued with the international passport which is bearing a different name from the name on the record.

“The appellants had lawful reason for the withdrawal and seizure of the respondent’s international passport. The appellants had justifiable reason to withdraw the respondent’s international passport,” NIS and its Comptroller General said.

  • Ex-Rivers Gov Peter Odili drags Immigration to Court over passport seizure at Abuja Airport

Ex-Rivers Gov Peter Odili drags Immigration to Court over passport seizure at Abuja Airport

Former Governor of Rivers State, Dr Peter Odili, has dragged the Nigeria Immigration Service, before a Federal High Court in Abuja, challenging the seizure of his passport at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

In the fundamental rights enforcement suit on Wednesday, he claimed that the international passport was seized from him on June 20, by operatives of the service and has been withheld since then.

Odili prayed the presiding judge, Justice Ahmed Mohammed, to compel the service to release the passport and order a perpetual injunction against the respondents, from harassing him any further and interfering with his fundamental rights of movement.

However, the immigration service revealed that the former governor’s passport was seized because he was on the watchlist of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The affidavit by the service also indicated that Mr Odili had never cared to know why his passport was seized, or demand its release.

Justice Mohammed subsequently fixed September 28, 2021 for hearing.

  • Ex-Governor of Rivers, Odili placed on EFCC watch list, barred from leaving Nigeria

Ex-Governor of Rivers, Odili placed on EFCC watch list, barred from leaving Nigeria

Former Governor of Rivers State, Mr Peter Odili has been placed on the watch list of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC ) and barred from travelling out of Nigeria.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) revealed this on Wednesday in response to a suit filed by Odili challenging the seizure of his international passport by the service.

When the matter was called on Wednesday, counsel to the service, Mr Jimoh Adamu informed the court that he had just filed a counter affidavit to oppose the suit of the former governor.

Adamu sought a brief adjournment to enable him put his house in order.

Odili’s counsel, Mr Ifedayo Adedipe did not oppose the request for a short adjournment.

Justice Mohammed then adjourned the matter until Sept. 28 for hearing.

The former governor had dragged the NIS and it’s Comptroller-General to the Federal High Court challenging the seizure of his passport at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport in Abuja for undisclosed reasons.

In the fundermental rights enforcement suit, he claimed that the international passport with number B50031305 was seized from him on June 20 by operatives of the service.

Odili prayed the court to compel the two respondents to release the passport to him.

He also prayed for an order of perpetual injunction against the service from further harrassing, embarrassing, intimidating or interfering with his fundermental right to freedom of movement.

The former governor also demanded a written apology for the embarrassment caused him by the service.

In a counter affidavit, the service justified the seizure of Odili’s passport and faulted his claims in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/965/2021.

“The applicant’s passport was seized because he is on the service’s (NIS’) watch list as requested by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC).

“It is the government’s policy that streamlines the security agencies present at the point of entry/exit from the country.

“The respondents (NIS and its Comptroller-General) are the lead agency for the above stated function.

“All security agencies collaborate by submitting list of any person on the watch list to the respondents.

“By virtue of Section 31 of the Immigration Act 2015, the respondents are empowered to prevent the departure from Nigeria where there is a request to arrest such a person in the public interest as requested in the instant case by the EFCC.

“By the above section of the Immigration Act, the respondents are empowered to seize the applicant’s international passport because he was watch listed sequel to EFCC requested,” it said.

The NIS argued that Odili’s suit was pre-mature as he allegedly failed to meet the condition precedent to the filing of such suits.

“This action is premature and incompetent as the applicant failed to serve pre-action notice on the service as condition precedent before filing this suit against the respondents.

“The failure to serve pre-action notice robs this honourable court of jurisdiction.

“The applicant is not entitled to the reliefs sought and the suit should be dismissed with substantial cost for failure to comply with condition precedent,” the service said.

  • NASS caucus condemns assault on Justice Odili, calls for caution

NASS caucus condemns assault on Justice Odili, calls for caution

The Rivers State caucus in the National Assembly (NASS) has condemned the attack on the residence of Dr. Peter Odili and his wife, Justice Mary Odili.

The National Assembly Caucus accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) to have sponsored thugs to carry out the attack following the judgment of the Supreme Court in the Bayelsa governorship election appeal.

In a statement signed by Senator George Thompson Sekibo and Reps Kingsley Ogundu Chinda, the NASS Rivers State caucus also condemned the silence of the Federal Governrnent and security agencies over the attack.

They described the attack as an audacious act of primitivism and grave threat, alleging that the placard-carrying thugs invaded the privacy of the Odilis and erected barricades against their residence for no other reason than that Justice Mary Odili participated in the Bayelsa governorship appeal as one among a five-man panel which heard the appeal and reached a unanimous decision that grates with the APC.

“This latest wanton shamelessness constitutes a new dimension in the continuing assault against the judiciary and, once again, underlines Nigeria’s inexorable degeneration and descent into rapid lawlessness.

“We recall that in 2015 Rivers State was the victim of unfavourable judicial decisions where, in literally one fell swoop, 15 out its 16 rnembers of the National Assembly were sacked. Painful as the decisions were, there was no recourse to self-help or threat of violence against any of the Justices who sat on the appeals.

“We would like to point out that Justice Mary Odili who has been inexplicably and unfairly targeted since the Bayelsa governorship decision, was a member of other panels of the Supreme Court which gave judgment in favour of at least three APC governors who are in office today.

“Finally, we call on Nigerians and the international community to note this egregious assault on the dignity and office of a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria and hold agents of the All Progressives Congress and their backers responsible should any harm befall Justice Mary Odili or any member of her family,” the statement read.
