    PHOTOS: Many, including students, pupils feared dead in Lokoja Black Wednesday accident

    Several persons, including students of Kogi State Polytechnic and some primary school pupils, have been killed in a Black Wednesday accident in Lokoja, Kogi State after a petrol tanker exploded and caught fire at Felele area in traffic gridlock.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports no fewer than 10 people have been confirmed dead after the petrol tanker caught fire after ramming into several vehicles in the traffic gridlock in the accident that happened in the early hours of Wednesday.

    Over ten vehicles were burnt down while the road has been closed down temporarily. Already men of the Federal Road Safety Corps and firefighters were on hand to control the situation.

    A petrol tanker belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) caught fire on along Garki Area 1 axis in Abuja on Tuesday.

    According to reports from our correspondent, the tanker spilled an amount of fuel on the road thereby causing massive traffic.

    As a result of the fire incident, various commuters on the highway were redirected by traffic officials to alternative routes.

    Meanwhile, he fire service team were contacted early and they arrived promptly at the scene and were able to put out the fire.

    Two vehicles burn as petrol tanker explodes in Ogun

    A tanker loaded with 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit leaked some of the inflammable product it was conveying around Ajileti, on Idiroko road, Ogun State, causing a fire that burnt two vehicles beyond recognition.

    The Idiroko unit Command of Federal Road Safety Corps, on Saturday, told News Agency of Nigeria in Ota, Ogun, that the accident happened about 4.30 pm on Friday.

    The Idiroko Unit Commander of FRSC, Mr Akinwunmi Olaluwoye, explained that the tanker, which was loaded with PMS and filled to the brim, leaked and caused the fire.

    The unit commander said no life was lost in the incident but the development disrupted traffic flow in the Ajeleti area on Idiroko road.

    “The FRSC wants to enjoin all tanker owners to install safety valves on their vehicles so that life could be saved when they spill their contents on the road,” he said.

    Olaluwoye also said the FRSC had begun a public enlightenment campaign to educate motorists on the dangers inherent in some unwholesome practices.

    He further implored tanker owners to properly maintain their vehicles before putting them on the road to avoid unnecessary loss of lives and property.

    Petrol tanker collides with tricycles in Yenagoa

    Four persons have been critically injured in a ghastly motor accident involving a tanker laden with petrol and two commercial tricycles known as ”Keke NAPEP”.

    The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the incident happened on Sunday morning along Akenpai, a suburb of Yenagoa, the state capital.

    The accident, according to a resident who witnessed it, occurred around 10:40 a.m. when the tanker laden with premium motor spirit, lost control and hit the tricycles at its front.

    The witness who only identified herself as Ann, explained that it took the intervention of people to get some heavy-duty equipments to pull out people who were trapped between the tricycles and the fuel tanker.

    According to Ann, at the time of the incident, some of the victims, numbering four were seen gasping for breath and were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa.

    She added that men of the fire service were presently on ground putting measures in place to prevent a possible fire outbreak.

    When contacted on telephone, Bayelsa Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps said that he was on his way from a trip to Abuja and pledged to update on the incident as soon as he got back.

    A NAN Correspondent who visited the scene reports that the petrol was gushing out of the tanker but the presence of policemen discouraged people from scooping the product.

    The Spokesman of the Police Command in Bayelsa, DSP Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident to NAN.

    Butswat said he was aware of the incident but that he had not been informed of any loss of lives.

    Butswat also said on telephone that the Fire Service personnel had been notified of the accident and that Policemen had been drafted to cordon off the area to forestall possible fire explosion following the spillage from the tanker.

    “Yes, I am aware of the accident, but what I can’t confirm is if there has been loss of lives, because I have not been briefed by my men.

    “We have notified the Fire Service and I can confirm to you that our men have cordoned off the area.” Butswat said.

    A petrol tanker spilled its content along the Lagos-Badagry road between Barracks and Onireke in Ojo Local Government area of Lagos in the early hours of Tuesday causing a fire outbreak that consumed seven vehicles.
    The inferno, which began at about 5.00 a. m, destroyed the contents of a Mack trailer conveying crates of drinks from Intercontinental Breweries.
    The fire gutted a station wagon Peugeot car, one Space bus, a Toyota Hummer jeep, a Mazda bus, a container conveying food products from Delta and an empty Mack trailer
    Mr Ja’faru Anka, a Senior Marshall Inspector of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), told NAN that he arrived at the scene few minutes after the fire started.
    He said that seven vehicles were gutted by the fire, but no life was lost.
    “I arrived at the scene few minutes after 5.o0 a.m. and as you can see, I am working with my team to clear up terrific traffic build up.
    An Army officer at the Ojo Barracks, who preferred to be anonymous, also said that the fire outbreak started by 5.00 a.m, while he was preparing for duty.
    He said that the attention of the fire service was drawn to the situation and some fire fighters were there, but ran out of water.
    He said that they were still expecting more response from the fire service.
    Some residents, who spoke with NAN, bemoaned the state of the road, which they said, had caused more harm than good to users.
    Mr Folorunsho Dada, a resident of Onireke, said that apart from the fire outbreak, the road had caused untold hardship to commuters.
    “Just imagine in front of an Army barracks, there is no access road and this is the situation from the beginning of Alakija and even down to Agbara; this fire outbreak started around 5.00 a. m when that tanker spilled its content on the road and left through another route,” he said.

    There was pandemonium on Wednesday afternoon as a petrol tanker laden with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) tumbled and exploded on Festac link bridge in Lagos, TheNewsGuru.com can authoritatively report.

     

    The tanker driver who was headed to the popular Apple Junction tumbled towards the Festac link bridge and exploded afterwards.

     

    When TheNewsGuru.com visited the scene of the incident which happened around 12:45 pm, the driver of the closest vehicle to the tanker was severely injured and as has since be rushed to a private hospital in the area.

     

     

    As at the time of filing this report, no death has been recorded and officials of the Lagos State Fire Service are on ground putting off the inferno.

  • 3 policemen dismissed for robbing petrol tanker in Delta

    The Commissioner of Police in Delta, Mr Zanna Ibrahim, said three police officers had been dismissed from service for hijacking a petroleum tanker in the state.

    Ibrahim said the dismissed policemen were also being prosecuted.

    He disclosed this in Asaba while presenting to newsmen the culprits alongside 21 other suspects who committed various crimes ranging from kidnapping, armed robbery, car snatching, cultism and murder.

    He said that the dismissed policemen had served in three different places in Edo, Delta and Imo, and had connived with two civilians.

    The commissioner said that the two civilians had earlier been arrested, tried and sentenced to prison.

    He said that the five-man gang confiscated the petroleum tanker which was carrying about 33, 000,000 liters of petrol along Agbor/Benin Expressway, tied up the driver and the conductor and took away the tanker, but that luck ran out of them.

    He gave the names of the dismissed policemen as: Sgt. Christopher Onyegho (Ex-F/No.375631), Sgt. Nwakem Enonzim (Ex-F/No.413318) and Sgt. Michael Chimaera (Ex-F/No.441254).

    “During my last briefing I informed you about the three serving policemen who were involved in robbing a Petroleum Tanker, and were undergoing department disciplinary measures.

    “The department proceeding has been completed and the policemen have been dismissed and arraigned in court for prosecution,” Ibrahim said.

    He also said that the command had recovered several locally made guns, ammunition, a Sienna bus, and some cash from the 21 other suspects, adding that the culprits would be charged to court on conclusion of investigation.
