Liverpool and former England international, Jamie Carragher, has listed Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, Manchester City’s Phil Foden, and Arsenal’s Declan Rice as his three contenders for this season’s PFA Player of the Year award.

Only one Premier League star will be handed the prestigious Player of the Year award at the end of the 2023/24 season.

It would be recalled that Man City’s Erling Haaland won the award last season after a remarkable debut season at Pep Guardiola’s side.

However, Carragher has not named Haaland among the favorites to win the award this season.

In a tweet via his X account on Friday, the former defender feels Van Dijk, Foden, or Rice will win the coveted title depending on whichever one’s club wins the Premier League this term.

“Phil Foden, Declan Rice and Virgil Van Dijk have been the best players for the three title contenders,” Carragher wrote.

“Whoever takes their team to the title, will probably take himself to the PFA POTY award!”

Chelsea reacts to Hazard’s snub from PFA Team of the Year

Chelsea have reacted to the omission of their playmaker, Eden Hazard, from this year’s PFA Team of the Year.

The PFA Team of the Year was released on Thursday morning and Hazard was omitted in the side which is dominated by Liverpool and Manchester City players.

Manchester United midfielder, Paul Pogba was the only non-Liverpool or Manchester City player to make the PFA Team of the Year.

Others includes; Virgil van Dijk, Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero, Sadio Mane, Bernardo Silva, Fernandiho, Alexander Arnold, Van Dijk, Laporte, Robertson and Ederson.

Reacting, Chelsea, in a statement through their official website on Thursday afternoon, said: “Eden Hazard did make the six-man shortlist for the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award which was announced at the weekend, yet he has not been named in the PFA Premier League Team of Year for 2018/19 which was unveiled this morning.

“Our no.10 is enjoying an outstanding season full of eye-catching moments and his non-selection is being widely described as a surprise omission. Certainly his headline statistics from the current season cannot have counted against him when the votes were cast.

“Hazard is enjoying his best Premier League campaign to date when it comes to goals and assists combined, and indeed he tops the table for that total across the all the players at all 20 clubs.

“One more goal in the remaining three matches and he will have surpassed his 16 scored in the league in 2016/17. His 13 assists is already two greater than his best previous Premier League tally, which came in his first season here in 2012/13.”

  • Five City players, Salah, Da Gea makes PFA Premier League team of the year

The newly-crowned league champions, Manchester City are the main force in the best Premier League XI this season, with Tottenham Hotspur well represented as well.
Few people will be surprised to see Manchester City dominate the PFA Premier League Team of the Year by having five players named.

City Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva, Sergio Aguero, Nicolas Otamendi and Kyle Walker are the five newly-crowned English champions included in the XI due to their impressive performances for a side sitting 16 points clear at the top of the table with five games to go.

Despite Pep Guardiola’s team’s dominance of the league, there are more star-studded names throughout the squad.

Tottenham Hotspur are the next best represented side as star striker Harry Kane takes the centre-forward role, with Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen also included.

Although still sitting second and third in the league, Manchester United and Liverpool only have one star each in the squad, with David de Gea taking his place between the posts and 30-goal hero Mohamed Salah adding to a mouth-watering attack.

Amid their poor title defence, Chelsea also saw one player named in the side, with Marcos Alonso earning praise for his impressive work on the left side.
