Findi George good for Super Eagles – PFAN

Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN), has hailed the choice of Finidi George as the Coach of the Super Eagles as a good choice.

The Board of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Monday appointed George as Head Coach of the Senior Men’s National Football Team.

This was after the NFF approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Committee to appoint George.

A statement released by General-Secretary of PFAN, Emmanuel Babayaro and signed by its President, Tijani Babangida, described the appointment by NFF as very good.

PFAN which is the players union in Nigeria, congratulated George on his appointment as the substantive coach of the Super Eagles.

The body expressed confidence in the technical abilities of the former Ajax Amsterdam and Real Betis star, to do a great job with the Super Eagles and make Nigerians happy again.

“Finidi George is a great and worthy choice for the exalted Super Eagles coaching job.

“As a former player and member of PFAN, we want to reiterate that we are solidly behind him and would give him every assistance necessary for him to do his job.

PFAN President Babangida who was also a former Ajax of Amsterdam winger, urged went NFF to support George to enable him to succeed.

George’s immediate task will be to guide the Super Eagles to victory in two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic in Uyo and Abidjan respectively.

The matches are must-win encounters, with the Super Eagles lagging behind in third place in Group C of the African campaign behind Rwanda and South Africa.

  • Super Eagles vs Lesotho: PFAN calls for Peseiro’s axing

Super Eagles vs Lesotho: PFAN calls for Peseiro’s axing

The Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN) Task Force has called for the sack of Super Eagles’ Coach, Jose Peseiro, over the dismal performance of the team against the Crocodiles of Lesotho.

Harrison Jalla, Chairman of PFAN task force made the call on Friday, saying that the Super Eagles’ performance against Lesotho marked another inglorious journey with coach Peseiro.

Recall the Super Eagles were held to a disappointing 1-1 home draw by Lesotho in a Group C Match Day 1 fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Uyo on Thursday.

“It was, indeed, a dismal performance by the Super Eagles against Lesotho under the watch of coach Peseiro.

“This is a clear indication that Nigeria will be bundled out of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and may not qualify for 2026 World cup if Peseiro is not sacked immediately,” he said.

The PFAN Task force boss noted that Peseiro was a baggage inherited from the immediate past Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Board.

He questioned what was there to emulate or carry over from a Board that according to him failed in all ramifications.

“Before the emergence of the Ibrahim Gusau led NFF Board, Coach Peseiro had shown Nigerians through his woeful performances that he had no capacity to thinker a brand like the Super Eagles.

“How did Gusau and his Board arrive at the decision to retain Jose Paseiro?

“When are we going to wipe out this mental slavery of ‘it must be a European?’

“What can this Portuguese coach offer the Super Eagles?” he asked.

He recalled that other African countries like Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia and Cameroon showcased their indigenous coaches at the Qatar 2022 World Cup and wondered why Nigeria could not emulate such gesture.

He stressed that Nigeria must be proud of what it had and engage indigenous coaches instead of relying on foreign coaches who had failed on several occasions.

“What is wrong in engaging coaches like Emmanuel Amunike, Sunday Oliseh, Finidi George and some of the legions of ex-internationals we have.

“We can invest in their training and retraining using a fund already provided for through the streams of FIFA funding.

“Coach Stephen Keshi of blessed memory has proved that an indigenous coach can win the African Nations cup and even go beyond the second round of the world cup,” he said.

He argued that a responsible football federation would have built on Coach Keshi’s legacy moving forward, adding that the hiring of Coach Gernot Rohr and Peseiro was a huge set back to Nigeria Football.

“Enough of the emotional trauma, harrowing experience and pains to Nigerians occasioned by the irresponsible leadership of the NFF.

“The Ibrahim Gusau led NFF must sack Peseiro now.

“It is better to grow with our own indigenous coaches than wasting 70,000 dollars monthly on a coach whose stock in trade is to bring sorrow and pains to Nigerians in every game,” he said.

The Super Eagles will trade tackles with the Warriors of Zimbabwe in their second group game of the 2026 World Cup qualifier at the Huye Stadium in Rwanda on Sunday.

  • NFF holds 78th Annual General Assembly, Elective Congress today

NFF holds 78th Annual General Assembly, Elective Congress today

The 2022 Elective Congress of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will hold today in Benin City, Edo State amid tight security, despite threats by a stakeholder group to cause chaos.

It would be recalled that two weeks ago, a group under the name Nigeria Football Stakeholders had warned that many lives will be lost if the NFF went ahead with the elective congress.

The group in a letter dated 7th August, 2022 and addressed to the minister of youth and sports development Sunday Dare, accused the outgoing NFF president Amaju Pinnick, of corruption and highhandedness.

“Embezzlement and fraud committed by the Amaju Pinnick led board with various cases pending at the ICPC and EFCC…blatant refusal to adjust the statute to accommodate all intending stakeholders to come to the board,” the letter read in part.

It went on to demand a suspension of the Elective Congress until such a time all reforms are carried out, warning that refusal to meet this demand will be met with very serious consequences.

“We will not hesitate to bomb and bring down the venue of the elections and blood will flow. Your agreement to the cancellation will save many lives,” the group threatened.

Another group referred to as the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN) also filed a Suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja over unequal representation and voting rights, and the presiding Judge, Justice Inyang Ekwo ordered that the elections be put on hold and that parties should maintain the status quo until further proceedings o October 31.

However, a court of appeal sitting in Abuja on Thursday vacated the order restraining the conduct of the election and the NFF confirmed via a press release that its 78th Annual General Assembly and elections of a new Executive Committee to steer the affairs of the nation’s supreme football ruling body for the next four years, would take place today Friday.

Among the 10 persons jostling to become the 44th NFF president are the current vice presidents, Seyi Akinwunmi (1st VP) and Shehu Dikko (2nd VP), as well as former Executive Committee Member and Chairman of Chairmen, Ibrahim Musa Gusau and former Executive Committee Member, Suleiman Yahaya-Kwande.

Contesting for seats on the Executive Committee from the South-East are Emeka Inyama (Abia State); Chikelue Iloenyosi (Anambra State); Karibe Pascal Ojigwe (Abia State); Jude Benjamin Obikwelu (Anambra State) and; Emmanuel Ochiagha (Imo State).

For North-central are Mohammed Alkali (Nasarawa State); Margaret Icheen (Benue State); Idris Abdullahi Musa (Kwara State); Daniel Amokachi (Benue State) and Benedict Akwuegbu (Plateau State).

Current board member Aisha Falode tops the list of candidates from the South-south region, with Kenneth Nwaomucha (Delta State); Gregory Abang (Cross River State); Roland Abu Omomoh (Edo State); Poubeni Ogun (Bayelsa State); Jarret Tenebe (Edo State) and Essien Udofot (Akwa Ibom State) also vying for seats from that zone.

Another current board member, Ganiyu Majekodunmi, leads the list of contestants for seats from the South-west, with Sunday Dele-Ajayi (Ondo State); Ayodeji Ogunjobi (Osun State); Olawale Gafar Liameed (Lagos State); Afolabi Taiwo Olugbenga (Osun State); Ayodeji Adegbenro (Ondo State) and Pelumi Jacob Olajengbesi (Osun State) is also in the race.

Vying for the North-east seat are current board member Babagana Kalli (Borno State); Sajo Mohammed (Adamawa State), and Timothy Henman Magaji (Taraba State), while current board member Sharif Rabiu Inuwa (Kano State) is the only candidate from the North-west.

  • NFF Elections: PFAN Task Force warns against defying court order

NFF Elections: PFAN Task Force warns against defying court order

The Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN) Task Force says the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) should not engage in the act of defying a court order regarding its upcoming elections.

Harrison Jalla, Chairman of PFAN Taskforce, told newsmen on Friday in Abuja that all those in the NFF defying court orders would face the consequences of their actions.

Newsmen reports that the NFF Electoral Committee had fixed Sept. 30 for the Federation’s elective congress in Benin and proceeded to release a schedule of events.

But an order of a Federal High Court Abuja order on Sept. 15 has since put the NFF Elections on hold.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, ruling on an ex-parte motion, ordered the Youth and Sports Development Minister and the NFF President, or any person acting on their instruction, to maintain the status quo.

This he said would be pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice for interlocutory injunction.

“The attention of PFAN Task Force has been drawn to publications in the media space on the threat by the NFF and its Electoral Committee to defy the Sept. 15 court order.

“In the light of this, the PFAN Task Force has taken appropriate steps and has duly informed all relevant agencies of government that there is a threat to cause a breach of the peace by defying the court order,” Jalla said.

He disclosed that PFAN Task Force was exploring all possibilities within the ambit of the law to ensure those already defying the court order would face the consequences of their actions.

Jalla said it was worrisome that NFF has continued to violate and breach court orders.

“This is in spite of President Muhammadu Buhari’s advice that they (NFF) go back as a body to amend the statutes, expand it and accommodate those who have been disenfranchised.

“As we speak, they are already breaching the orders of court because we see correspondences after the court order, and campaigns for elections are still going on.

“So, we are taking the appropriate steps to ensure that those who do this don’t go scot-free.”

He said PFAN Task Force did not need government to do the job of ensuring a stop is put to the act of defying court orders.

“We have all it takes within the ambit of the law to ensure that the election does not hold,” Jalla stated.

He noted that the court order to halt the elections was a result of a consistent and deliberate acts of breaching court orders by the NFF since 2021.

“Every Nigerian is a citizen of the country, and the threat by NFF to defy the court order is unacceptable as nobody is above the law.

“The NFF has no immunity from the laws of the land, even as FIFA itself has no immunity from the laws of Switzerland.

“The order we got from court didn’t just start today. We’ve been in court four times, and the two parties have been in court since 2021.

”At the last hearing date in June, the court gave us Oct. 31 to come back.

“We asked for an interlocutory order because we anticipated that an election would hold.

“They (NFF) said they are not going to do any election because there was no cause for that action and the court agreed with them as there was no electoral committee in place at the time.”

The PFAN Task Force Chairman added that the judge thereafter stood down the order and gave all involved parties an Oct. 31 date to return to court.

“In between that period, they set up an electoral committee and started selling nomination forms. There is no court that will accept that anywhere in the world and that was how this fresh order came about.

“So, when the court order was issued, it was because they were already violating the process in court. This has really nothing to do with stopping the election.

“If any other group is now telling us that they are not bound by that order of court, then we will take it from there,” he said.

Also, Victor Baribote, the PFAN spokesman, said it was very clear the Nigeria football governing body was not in order.

“In the last eight years, there has been nothing to show for all what the Federal Government did in terms of supporting the NFF with massive funding.

“Also, all the funds FIFA brought in and all the funds that were realised from the private sector cannot be seen in what is on ground.

“We are all aware of the activities which have been going on within the football circle of late.

“This is why on June 26 in 2021 PFAN set up a task force in its wisdom, to look at issues on how we can advance our football.

“We are all aware and are witnesses to the fact we have been recycling old hands in the NFF.

“On the strength of that, the task force wrote a letter to the NFF last year in line with Article 29, requesting for an ammendment of the Statutes to include every stakeholder.

“But to cut the long story short, the NFF has blantantly refused to do anything about it,” he claimed.

The former Nigeria Premier League (NPL) Chairman said the position of PFAN was that election was not important at the moment, and that “fixing” the nation’s football was the top priority.

He noted that Nigeria had all it takes for its football to become the biggest employer of labour in the country, if the right things were done.

“It is not about election because the election we are talking about is the same one that will reproduce the same people who brought us to where we are today, and that is unacceptable.

“So, we are ready to answer any name to make football work again in this country. We are not going to let it go. The President (Muhammadu Buhari) himself has said it is a national asset that should be guarded jealously.

“So, our position is that we have to sit down as a group, fix the game, include those who are supposed to be part of it and we take it from there.

“If that is not done, then if it is FIFA or the Federal Government that wants to intervene in this process, it is left for them to come and do what is necessary,” Baribote said.

  • PFAN knocks federation over demands for NFF’s statutes 2010 amendment

PFAN knocks federation over demands for NFF’s statutes 2010 amendment

The Project 2022 Taskforce, an offshoot of the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN), says it will seek justice from appropriate institutions against the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) over refusal to amend the “NFF’s Statutes 2010”.

The taskforce disclosed this in a statement signed by its Chairman/facilitator, Harrison Jalla and Secretary, Edema Fuludu, copies of which were made available to newsmen on Monday, in Warri.

Recalled that the taskforce had, on June 26, 2021 at a press briefing in Warri, issued a 90-day notice to the Federation to amend the NFF’s Statutes 2010 which, according to them, would put the nation’s football on the part of growth.

“In view of the above, the Taskforce wrote a letter to the NFF to communicate its demands with a 90-day mandatory notice from June 26, 2021, vide the relevant provisions of Article 27, sub 182 of the NFF’s Statutes 2010.

“The NFF failed to acknowledge or respond to the letter of demands, at the expiration of the 90-day notice.

“A 14 days grace period or reminder was further given to them to effect the relevant amendments, yet it was not complied with.

“Having exhausted all avenues of due process as enshrined in the various provisions of FIFA, CAF, NFF and the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Taskforce is left with the only option to commence the process of getting justice from the appropriate institutions/authorities.

“The agitation is not to witch-hunt anybody, but to ensure that football is revived in Nigeria,” the group said.

The taskforce noted that the NFF’s Statutes 2010 was responsible for the slow pace of football development in the country.

The Congress of the general assembly of the NFF had 44 members, including States’ Football Associations with 37 while Leagues, Coaches, Referees and the PFAN had one member each, the taskforce noted.

“The rules must be amended to reflect equal representation. We stand by that and we are going to do everything possible within the ambit of the law to reflect that,” the group said.

According to the taskforce, the NFF’s Statutes 2010 should be amended to address: the current composition of the NFF Congress; composition of the NFF Executive Committee; voting pattern, among others.

The group frowned at the attitude of the nation’s football ruling body to its demands, but conceded that it had agreed to rely on the status of its members, as major Stakeholders in the football industry, to pursue their demands to a logical conclusion.
