Shaibu vows to deliver Tinubu’s mandate for NIS

The newly appointed Director General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Philip Shaibu, has described his appointment as a product of divine favour.

Speaking during a special thanksgiving service at the St. Paul Catholic Church, Airport Road, Benin on Sunday, Shaibu promised to align his leadership with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.

The new director general, who is the immediate past Deputy Governor of Edo, appreciated Tinubu for entrusting him with the responsibility of reforming and repositioning the nation’s foremost sports training institution.

“I consider this appointment not just an honour, but a divine arrangement. It is a call to national duty and an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to youth and sports development in Nigeria,” he said.

The event drew a distinguished audience, including Deputy Governor of Edo, Dennis Idahosa.

In his remarks, Idahosa congratulated Shaibu, describing his appointment as well-deserved and a testament to his resilience and dedication to public service.

The deputy governor expressed confidence that the former deputy governor would reposition the NIS for greater national impact.

“I have no doubt that Philip Shaibu will deliver. His track record speaks for itself, and I believe the National Institute for Sports is in good hands,” Idahosa said.

Shaibu, in response, assured that he and Idahosa would remain exemplary ambassadors of Edo.

He pledged to champion policies that would reflect the state’s progressive values and further Nigeria’s sports development goals.

The ceremony was followed by a reception at Shaibu’s residence on Adeyan Avenue, where friends, political associates, and supporters gathered to celebrate the milestone.

  • NIS must deliver on its mandates – Comrade Shaibu

NIS must deliver on its mandates – Comrade Shaibu

Comrade Philip Shaibu has said the National Institute for Sports (NIS) must deliver on its mandates under him as Director General (DG).

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Comrade Shaibu, a former Deputy Governor of Edo State, said this as he assumes duties as the new DG of NIS.

Shaibu was received by the management staff of the institution upon arrival on Monday at the NIS headquarters in Lagos State.

He was subsequently joined by NIS Directors in the conference room, where he received the handover notes from his predecessor, Professor Morolayo Fasakin, represented by Mrs Omonude.

In a brief remark, the new DG appreciated President Bola Tinubu for the trust and confidence reposed in him.

Shaibu assured that he will do his best with a profound sense of duty, responsibility and dedication to unreservedly serve the country along with the President’s renewed hope agenda.

He promised to lead by example and sustain collaboration with relevant partners and requested for cooperation of staff towards achieving the targets set for the institution.

“I have come here to work with you in line with the mandate of Mr. President, Ahmed Bola Tinubu renewed hope agenda.

“Our business here is sports. Mr. President has a vision for sports in Nigeria for the country to take its pride of place in Africa and beyond.

“So, ours here is to train world-class coaches and athletes that will go out there as our products and excel.

“We must turn things around. All over the world, there is a shortage of paramedics; we must produce them.

“I am drafted here by Mr. President. I have come and I must deliver. We need to wake up; we must deliver on our tasks.

“We will train our coaches, athletes and paramedics for the world. We have the potential, and I believe in collective work. So, NIS must deliver on its mandate,” Shaibu said.

Upon his resumption of duties, the new DG has also held a meeting with the NIS staff in Abuja, where he solicited their understanding to deliver on the President’s renewed hope agenda.

  • Ex-Gov Obaseki’s deputy appears in court over contempt

Ex-Gov Obaseki’s deputy appears in court over contempt

Mr Godwins Omobayo, who was appointed as deputy governor to the immediate-past Governor of Edo, Godwin Obaseki, on Monday, appeared at a Federal High Court in Abuja to honour a court order.

Omobayo appeared in court alongside his counsel, Mr Ken Mozia, SAN, before Justice Omotosho.

Justice Omotosho had, on Nov. 4, ordered Omobayo to appear in person before him on Nov. 25 (today) over his alleged disobedience to court judgment.

The judge, in a ruling, held that the order was to give Omobayo, the alleged contemnor, a fair hearing and the opportunity to defend himself in line with Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The reinstated Deputy Governor to Obaseki, Philip Shaibu, had filed the contempt charge for Omobayo to be committed to prison over his alleged refusal to vacate the deputy governorship position after a valid court judgment.

Justice Omotosho had, on July 17, voided the impeachment of Shaibu as the deputy governor of Edo by the house of assembly.

The judge, in the judgment, ordered his reinstatement to office on the grounds that the Edo House of Assembly failed to comply with due process in the purported impeachment.

The judge also held that the allegation on which the assembly based the impeachment proceedings was untenable in law and did not constitute a gross misconduct.

The judgment was in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/478/2024 with Shaibu as the plaintiff.

The reinstated deputy governor had sued the Inspector-General (I-G) of Police, the Deputy Governor of Edo, the Attorney-General, Chief Judge of Edo, Speaker of Edo House of Assembly and the Edo State House of Assembly as 1st to 6th defendants respectively.

Omobayo was, on April 8, sworn in as the new deputy governor after Shaibu’s impeachment by the state’s house of assembly.

Justuce Omotosho had, on Oct. 24, granted Shaibu’s motion ex-parte seeking for an order for a substituted service of Form 49 on Omobayo and fixed Nov. 4 for hearing.

However, neither Omobayo nor his lawyer was represented in court.

Ayotunde Ogunleye, who appeared for Shaibu, therefore, prayed the court to make an order, directing Omobayo to appear in person as order of court cannot continue to be treated with disregard.

Upon resumed hearing on Monday, Omobayo, who was in court, was represented by Mozia.

Ogunleye then told the court that the affidavit of service of Form 48, Form 49, the motion and the hearing notice as ordered by the court on the defendants was dated Nov. 19.

The court registrar equally confirmed the affidavit of service of the documents on the defendants in the court record.

Ogunleye informed the court that the matter was adjourned till today for hearing of the contempt proceedings.

The lawyer, however, said counsel to the contemnor (Omobayo) served them with a motion on notice filed on Nov. 20 by which they sought to regularise their processes.

Responding, Mozia told the court that it was “Godwins Marvelous Omobayo that filed the motion and not a contemnor” as being referred by Ogunleye.

“He filed an application within which to extend time to file his process. It was filed on Nov. 20. I crave the indulgence of your lordship to take the application,” the senior lawyer said.

Ogunleye, who acknowledged being served, said he was not opposing.

But Justuce Omotosho said since the motion was filed on Nov. 20 and presumably served on 1st, 2nd and 5th defendants who were not represented in court, it would be necessary to give them opportunity to also respond in the interest of fair hearing.

The judge consequently adjourned the matter until Jan. 29, 2025 for hearing of the contempt charge. He ordered that hearing notice be issued and served on 1st, 2nd and 5th defendants.

Obaseki-Shaibu’s tenure in Edo ended on Nov. 12 with the swearing in of the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s Governorship Candidate, Sen. Monday Okpebholo as new governor.

  • Court hears Philip Shaibu’s contempt charge against Omobayo Oct. 24

Court hears Philip Shaibu’s contempt charge against Omobayo Oct. 24

A Federal High Court in Abuja, on Tuesday, fixed Oct. 24 for the hearing of a contempt charge filed by the reinstated Deputy Governor of Edo, Philip Shaibu, against Godwins Omobayo, over alleged refusal to obey court judgment.

Justice James Omotosho fixed the date after Shaibu’s counsel, Reuben Egwuaba, informed the court that a contempt charge had been filed for the committal of Omobayo, who took over as deputy governor, to prison due to his refusal to comply with the valid order of the court.

Justice Omotosho equally ordered that Omobayo be served with all the court documents, including Form 49, filed on Sept. 19 in order to be given the opportunity to purge himself of the contempt charge.

“This matter is hereby adjourned to 24th day of October for hearing of the motion on notice dated 13th September and filed 19th September seeking for committal of Engr Marvellous Godwins Omobayo and to give him opportunity to defend himself.

“I hereby made an order that the motion be served on Marvelous Godwins Omobayo to enable him file necessary defence ,” the judge said.

Earlier, Egwuaba prayed for a short adjournment since the current state government’s tenure would be coming to an end on Nov. 12.

The lawyer said the court judgment delivered on July 17 was duly served on Omobayo and that several letters were also written to the house of assembly but to no effect.

NAN earlier reported that Justice Omotosho, on Tuesday, also struck out the two separate motions filed by the Edo Government and the house of assembly challenging the reinstatement of Shaibu as deputy governor.

The judge, in a ruling, also awarded the cost of N200, 000 each against the state government and the assembly, making a total of N400, 000.

The development followed an application by lawyer to the state’s Attorney-General (AG), Marvin Omorogbe, and that of the house of assembly, Sonia Egbunia, seeking to withdraw the motions for stay of execution.

They said the intention to withdraw the motion was as a result of the records of appeal which had been transmitted to the Court of Appeal.

Although Egwuaba, who appeared for Shaibu did not opposed their intention to withdraw the two motions, he, however, asked the court for a N50 million cost each against the AG (3rd defendant) and the assembly (6th defendant) but the judge awarded the sum of N400, 000 against the two defendants.

NAN reports that Justice Omotosho had, on July 17, voided the impeachment of Shuaibu as the deputy governor of Edo by the house of assembly.

The judge, in the judgment, ordered his reinstatement to office on the grounds that the house of assembly failed to comply with due process in the purported impeachment.

Justice Omotosho also held that the allegation on which the assembly based the impeachment proceedings was untenable in law and did not constitute a gross misconduct.

The judgment was on the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/478/2024 with Shuaibu as the plaintiff.

The reinstated deputy governor had sued the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Deputy Governor of Edo, the AG, Chief Judge of Edo, Speaker of Edo House of Assembly and the Edo State House of Assembly as 1st to 6th defendants respectively.

Omobayo was, on April 8, sworn in as the new deputy governor after Shaibu’s impeachment by the state’s house of assembly.

  • Edo govt slams Shaibu for parading as Deputy Governor

Edo govt slams Shaibu for parading as Deputy Governor

Edo Government has accused Comrade Philip Shaibu, of impersonating Marvellous Omobayo as the deputy governor of the State.

This is contained in a statement by the state Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Osa Nehikhare on Monday in Benin.

The state government alleged that Shaibu had been carrying out correspondence with individuals and organisations, claiming to be the deputy governor.

Nehikhare urged the public to disregard such correspondence from Shaibu because the issue of his reinstatement as deputy governor was still in court.

Recall that Shaibu, who was impeached by the state House of Assembly, was reinstated on July 19, by a federal high court in Abuja.

Shaibu said the judgment that reinstated him was declarative and had to be carried out before any outcome of appeal on the declaration was concluded.

Nehikhare said Shaibu, for now, was not the Deputy Governor of Edo  and every correspondence from him in that regard should be disregarded and considered a forgery.

According to him, the next hearing in the case is scheduled for Sept. 24.

The commissioner noted that the state government and the Edo House of Assembly had filed motions challenging Shaibu’s purported reinstatement by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court.

He said the motions sought an order for a stay of execution and an order suspending the judgment, as well as restraining Shaibu from parading himself as deputy governor.

“Security agencies are, by this notice, alerted to the potential breach of peace and are urged to hold Philip Shaibu responsible for any security breach in the state arising from his ignoble actions,” Nehikhare said.

The commissioner reaffirmed that Omobayo remained the deputy governor of the state and any correspondence carried out by Shaibu was an act of impersonation.

  • Edo 2024: Shaibu’s bitter-sweet Abuja court judgment – By Ehichioya Ezomon

Edo 2024: Shaibu’s bitter-sweet Abuja court judgment – By Ehichioya Ezomon

Reproduced herein is a draft of the article intended for Monday, July 22, 2024, before it’s “overtaken” by the Thursday, July 18, 2024, alleged attempt by political thugs to “assassinate” either or both of court-reinstated Deputy Governor of Edo State, Comrade Philip Shaibu, and the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the September 21, 2024, Edo governorship election, Senator Monday Okpebholo (APC, Edo Central).

The focus of the KIV-ed article is the favourable judgment that Shaibu got from the Abuja Federal High Court, restoring him to his Office, and whether Governor Godwin Obaseki – who instigated his impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly – will honour the court order not to interfere with or prevent Shaibu from carrying out his duties as the Deputy Governor of Edo State.

Noting that Obaseki – like most of his peer-Governors – has no appetite for court rulings that disfavour him and his government, the article concludes that Obaseki may rather run out the clock, by appealing the Abuja court judgment, to forestall Shaibu’s return to office as Deputy Governor of Edo State. (That prediction has come true, with the Obaseki government parading copies of a stay of execution and appeal it filed on the same day of the court judgment, and the governor threatening lately – at a political event – that “Nigeria will burn” if Shaibu’s reported hired thugs repeated their alleged attacks on innocent Edolites, and destruction of property in Benin City, Edo State capital city.) Happy reading!

“From the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, it’s a mixed grill of “you win some, you lose some” for reinstated Deputy Governor of Edo State, Comrade Philip Shaibu, whose impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly on April 8, 2024, was nullified by the court.

“If you didn’t peruse the mainstream media, you wouldn’t know that this pronouncement came from the same court on the same day, as only one aspect of the judgment trended on social media – to the effect that the court had upheld the candidacy of Dr Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the September 21, 2024, governorship election in Edo State.

“The court gave Ighodalo judgment on the grounds that he’s duly nominated at the PDP primary on February 22, 2024; the plaintiffs’ case lacked merit, as they failed to provide sufficient evidence to prove that Ighodalo had forged his permanent voter’s card (PVC); and that the action was statute-barred and consequently merited to be struck out.

“The other ruling – which should’ve gained equal or a measure of prominence in the media – is the reinstatement of Shaibu as the Deputy Governor of Edo State – a position he’s sacked from by the House of Assembly over alleged gross misconduct, which stemmed from his aspiration to succeed Governor Godwin Obaseki in office in November 2024.

“Interestingly, Shaibu had initiated the suit, marked CS/469/24, at the Abuja court presided by Justice Kolawole Omotosho, who held that Shaibu’s impeachment was ‘illegal, unconstitutional, null, and void,’ on the premise that it’s ‘in gross violation of the provisions of both sections 188 and 35 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).’

“Recall that Obaseki and Shaibu decamped mid 2020 to the opposition PDP when then-ruling APC in Edo State refused them a return ticket for that year’s September governorship poll, which they subsequently won, and rejoiced and danced together publicly, to mock their traducers in the APC’s National Working Committee (NWC), headed by former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who’s Obaseki and Shaibu’s acclaimed political godfather.

“But the politically-motivated love lust between Obaseki and Shaibu didn’t last, as Shaibu expressed his aspiration to succeed Obaseki, who’s already grooming a ‘successor’ in Dr Ighodalo, the governor’s Lagos-based friend and business associate, who’s nominally present in Obaseki’s government as Chairman of ‘Alaghodaro’ – the administration’s annual economic summit.

“Failing to dissuade Shaibu from his governorship ambition, Obaseki reportedly put in motion a plan to induce the House of Assembly to impeach Shaibu, who preempted such an eventuality with a writ at a Federal High Court court in Abuja, which restrained Obaseki, the House of Assembly and security agencies from giving effect to sack Shaibu as Deputy Governor.

“Beaten in his own game, Obaseki denied the plot, and gave Shaibu a false sense of security, prompting Shaibu to publicly apologise for his indiscretion of taking out the suit against Obaseki, who accepted the contrition, and hoped that Shaibu won’t breach it – by persisting in his bid to be Governor in 2024.

“That’s not to be, as to Obaseki’s discomfeiture, Shaibu stepped up consultations within and outside Edo State, to realise the governorship. That’s when the governor deployed his ‘Plan B’ to checkmate Shaibu by undermining his office as Deputy Governor: Bar him from direct communication with the governor; prevent his attendance at official engagements involving Obaseki or representating the governor or government; relocate the Deputy Governor’s office outside the Osadebey Avenue Government House in Benin City; and allocate the office to ‘Alaghodaro’ as a secretariat – and thus Ighodalo as a ‘de facto Deputy Governor.’

“Having literally made Shaibu orphan and homeless, Obaseki pressed on with the ultimate strategy of impeaching him, which the House of Assembly carried out on April 8, dismissing an Abuja Federal High Court’s injunction as an interference in the internal affairs of the legislative arm of government.

“Subsequently, Shaibu and his pro-delegates were allegedly prevented from participating at the PDP-organised governorship primary that returned Ighodalo as candidate of the party, having scored 577 votes to defeat 10 other aspirants, ‘including Shaibu,’ who’s returned at a parallel primary he won with 301 votes as the sole contestant.

“It’s a combination of alleged undue election of Ighodalo as candidate of the PDP, Ighodalo’s purported forgery of a PVC of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and Shaibu’s own impeachment on April 8 that Shaibu and others took before the Federal High Court, Abuja, on which Justice Omotoso made pronouncements on July 17.

“As per the judgment in a suit marked, CS/469/24, as first reported by Vanguard on July 17, the court upheld the nomination of Dr. Ighodalo as the PDP candidate for the 2024 Edo State gubernatorial election, and dismissed the case filed by Philip Shaibu, challenging Ighodalo’s nomination.

“In his ruling, Justice Omotoso held that, ‘Ighodalo was duly nominated’ during the party’s primary on February 22, 2024, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, with Ighodalo emerging victorious by ‘securing 577 votes to defeat Shaibu and 10 other aspirants.’

“‘The court further determined that the plaintiffs’ case lacked merit, as they failed to provide sufficient evidence to prove that Ighodalo had forged his voter’s card. Moreover, the court ruled that the action was statute-barred and consequently struck it out.’

“Ruling on Shaibu’s impeachment, the court reinstated him as Deputy Governor of Edo State, with Justice Omotosho declaring the purported ouster by the Edo State House of Assembly as “in gross violation of the provisions of both sections 188 and 35 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), and thus, ‘illegal, unconstitutional, null, and void.’

“‘Aside from restoring him (Shaibu) to office as the Deputy Governor, the court held that all his salaries, allowances, and benefits should be paid to him from April 8 (2024), when he was illegally impeached, until the expiration of his tenure.

“‘The court issued an order of perpetual injunction, restraining Governor Godwin Obaseki and the Edo State House of Assembly from stopping Shaibu from performing the functions of his office.’

“Noting that the reason the Edo Assembly gave for impeaching the plaintiff was ‘lame and smacked of an ochestrated political vendetta,’ the court ordered the Inspector General of Police to ‘immediately restore all his (Shaibu’s) security details.’

“It’s a bitter-sweet judgment for Comrade Shaibu. While he may’ve lost his bid for Governor in 2024 – unless he’s a favourable judgment on appeal – Shaibu’s retained his office as Deputy Governor of Edo State, with all his entitlements, rights and privileges restored from the date of his impeachment.

“The poser is: Will Governor Obaseki obey the court verdict and its declarative orders? Obaseki – like most Governors across Nigeria – has no respect for court rulings that disfavour him and his government. The Edo House of Assembly, the state’s Chief Judge and Governor Obaseki had disobeyed the Abuja Federal High Court’s order to maintain the status quo, and to show cause why the Shaibu prayer against his impeachment moves shouldn’t be granted.

“It’s Obaseki’s choice to obey the instant court order, or simply go on appeal, as a delay tactic, to frustrate the judgment, and forestall Shaibu’s return to the government as Deputy Governor till November 2024, when the incumbent administration hands over to a new government.

“The Edo people are watching – and waiting with bated breath – to see if the proverbial leopard can change its spots, especially in the homestretch of campaigning for the September 21 election for which Obaseki’s “anointed” and is supporting Dr Ighodalo to succeed him!”

  • Appeal Court affirms Ighodalo as PDP candidate

Appeal Court affirms Ighodalo as PDP candidate

The Appeal Court sitting in Abuja has rejected an appeal to nullify the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) primary election that produced Asue Ighodalo as its candidate for the upcoming Governorship Election in Edo.

The appellate court, in a unanimous decision by a three-member panel led by A. M Lamido, on Monday, dismissed the appeal filed by the embattled Deputy Governor of the State, Philip Shaibu.

Shaibu was earlier impeached from office but recently got reinstated by the court.

While dismissing the appeal marked: CA/ABJ/CV/642/2024, for want of merit, Lamido held that it found no reason to set aside the May 27 judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The court further ruled that the trial court was right for refusing to invalidate the outcome of PDP primary election based on the suit by the appellant.

It awarded a N1million cost against the appellant.

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court had, in his judgment that was affirmed by the appellate court, held that Shaibu lacked the legal right to seek to nullify the outcome of the primary poll.

Omotosho further held that the plaintiff did not meet the condition precedent to confer such a legal right on him.

According to the court, no evidence was adduced to establish that he participated in the primary election he sought to nullify its outcome.

Omotosho held that it was a basic requirement of the law that a plaintiff must take part in a disputed election to be able to challenge its outcome in court.

He said that there was overwhelming evidence that the plaintiff was never physically present at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, where the primary election of February 22 took place.

Shaibu had in the suit prayed the court to issue an order stopping the INEC from accepting or recognising Ighodalo as the gubernatorial flag bearer of PDP in the election.

He contended that the primary election that produced Ighodalo was not conducted in compliance with both the Electoral Act and party Constitution.

He prayed the court to, among other things, compel the party to conduct a fresh primary election in the State.

  • How I challenged God to prove his name – Philip Shaibu

How I challenged God to prove his name – Philip Shaibu

The reinstated Deputy Governor of Edo State, Comrade Philip Shaibu has revealed how he challenged God to prove His name in his life.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Comrade Shaibu made the disclosure at a thanksgiving service held at St. Paul Catholic Church, Benin to mark his court victory.

Recall Shaibu, who was impeached on March 18, got reinstated by the court on July 17.

In his speech during the thanksgiving, the Deputy Governor warned against violence and anti-democratic activities ahead of the September 21 Governorship poll in Edo.

He called for unity and peaceful resolution of conflicts, notwithstanding the provocation.

Shaibu, who described himself as a child of God, said he had challenged God to prove his name in his life.

“I said, prove to the world that truly I am your son. They said they will impeach me, and when I go to court and by the time the judgment would come, the tenure would be over.

“But God proved them wrong and the judgment came earlier than expected on July 17,” he said.

He warned the youths against violence, saying they could be whoever they wanted without going to the streets.

“You can be who you want to be when you are consistent and do what is right all the time. Don’t let anyone disrupt this democracy.

“You must stand your ground to make sure that democracy succeeds,” said the deputy governor.

He said violence would only lead to suffering, adding that “Nigeria cannot afford to go to war.

“There are too many economic problems that need to be solved,” he
    said.

On the allegation that he was the mastermind of the Benin Airport attack, Shaibu said the State Government was only trying to cover up.

“They killed a policeman and all of them must be picked up. The men of the vigilance group and Public Work Volunteers did that.

“They want to drag people in, so I called on the President and IG to set up an inquiry, not just to investigate but to proscribe the vigilance group and POWOV,” he said.

The deputy governor said he had changed his style and now used his brain instead of resorting to violence.

“I don’t move people to the street anymore. They said I will soon go to the street, but I didn’t go. I use my brain, and I have been winning,” he said.

Earlier, the officiating priest of the church, Rev. Fr. Charles Omogiate, cautioned against killings in the name of seeking for positions. Position, he said, would come and go but human beings would remain.

“If you take lives and property because you want position, know that you are on the part of destruction because God gives lives and only He has the power to take lives,” the cleric said.

  • BREAKING: Tinubu set to storm Edo after Shaibu’s defection to APC

BREAKING: Tinubu set to storm Edo after Shaibu’s defection to APC

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Umar Ganduje has disclosed that President Bola Tinubu will be in Benin-City for a mega rally to be organised by the party.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Ganduje made the disclosure on Saturday when he inaugurated the national campaign council of the party for the 2024 governorship election in Edo.

Inaugurating the council headed by Gov. Bassey Ottu of Cross River, Ganduje charged the members to ensure the party reclaimed the state from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) during the Sept. 21 off-cycle election.

The national chairman, who was excited with the official defection of the state deputy governor, Philip Shaibu to the APC, said the party had secured up to 50 per cent of the people in the government of the State.

He urged the campaign council to swing into action to ensure that all members at the local government areas and unit levels come out to campaign and vote.

“A flag-off rally will soon be organised so that President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu will be in Benin-City.

“We are so happy because our incoming governor and his deputy have already produced a blueprint for the development of Edo state; they are not full with MoUs.

“They are coming with a blueprint and practical steps, so that Edo can fully develop and be connected to the centre,” he said.

The former governor of Kano State said that if the state was not connected to the centre, it would not experience a full political participation and dividends of democracy.

According to him, the only way to achieve this, is by voting for Sen. Monday Okpebholo and his running mate, Dennis Idahosa, who are flying the flag of the party in the election.

Ganduje commended the Oba of Benin for maintaining peace and tranquility in the state, assuring that the incoming APC government would appreciate and respect the traditional council under the Oba of Benin.

Sen. Okpebholo said Edo had never been so divided as it was currently.

The APC candidate castigated Gov. Godwin Obaseki for raising the state debt profile from about ₦43 billion when he took over in 2016 to over ₦500 billion.

“We are here to change it; we are coming to restore infrastructure, to restore education and to restore security to the state. We are bringing practical governance into the state,” he said.

The State chairman of APC, Jarret Tenebe urged the national chairman of the party to join them to rescue the state from the grip of the PDP.

Earlier, the Senator representing Edo North and former governor of the state, Sen. Adams Oshiomhole, said the gathering represented the very essence of the broom, a reunion of the people who were deceived in their former party.

Oshiomhole said Okpebholo, if elected, had a huge task ahead of him as governor of Edo.

He urged the people of the state to make a comparison of the years of the rule of the APC and the PDP in the state and see the difference.

“Edo people have the chance to sit back and ask themselves the differences between the years the APC ruled the state and the years the PDP ruled.

“Governance is about having human empathy. Those who do not know your house cannot fix the linkages; only those who know the linkages can help fix them.

“If they can cheat themselves and go to court, we will not allow them to cheat [at the polls]. It will be one-man-one-vote,” he said.

Commenting on the killing of Insp. Onu Akon, the police aide of Sen. Okpebholo, Oshiomhole vowed to ensure that the national assembly investigate the death and that the investigation would not be messed up.

He, however, called on the Inspector-General of Police to disband the State Security Network, which he said had become a tool for oppression in the hand of the state government.

Oshiomhole also called on the state Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye, “to defend the integrity of his uniform by apprehending the perpetrators of the act and bring them to book

According to him, “The days of oppression are over. They shall know no peace because they have murdered sleep,” he said.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the campaign council, Gov. Ottu of Cross Rivers, promised to deliver the state for the APC come Sept. 21.
