Everybody knows ref favoured Liverpool – Pickford

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford says the “whole world” knows Liverpool were favoured by match officials for Saturday’s 2-0 defeat.

Ashley Young was sent off, while Everton were left aggrieved by Ibrahima Konate avoiding a second yellow and also VAR granting Liverpool a penalty, converted by Mohamed Salah.

“It’s a tough day. It’s always going to be tough to come to Anfield as an Everton player,” Pickford said after the full-time whistle. “We gave it our all, worked hard and decisions definitely didn’t go our way, no shock there.

“I think the work-rate we’ve put in was second to none after going down to ten men. After about half an hour, we dug in and they created chances – like they were always going to. We put up a good fight. As a team, we’re not far off. Coming here is always a tough place, but we had a right good go and were always in the game – even with ten men. Going down to ten and the lads putting a shift in, you’re going to get tired.”

Asked if he believed Everton were on the wrong side of the officiating, Pickford told Premier League Productions: “It’s not rocket science to work it out, I think the whole world will know. We can’t comment too much because you will just get done anyway. A bit of dialogue would be nice and less arrogance would be nice as well.”

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford hailed their performance for victory over Chelsea.

Richarlison struck the winner as Pickford kept a clean sheet for the 1-0 win.

He later said, “I am a very passionate person and it means the world to us to get the result today.

“Our character and team spirit drove us on today and with the fans behind us like they were it was incredible. Now is about today, we will enjoy it but come next week we will focused on the next games.

“I worked hard all week. It is rewarding when you make the saves to help the team out as they help you out as well. It is a team effort and that was my job.

“We know their quality, they are Champions League winners and we got the feeling at Goodison that with hard work and dedication we would get the result.

“The fans are very passionate. To get that buzz on the bus coming in it touches you. We have still got five games, we will take them as they come.”

I was wrong not to send off Pickford for Van Dijk challenge, referee admits

Premier League ref Michael Oliver admits he was wrong not to send off Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford for his challenge on Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk earlier this season.

Van Dijk’s season was cut short by the incident, as he was forced to undergo knee surgery.

Oliver is quoted by the Liverpool Echo: “It was a big game, both teams were flying in.

“The assistant had given offside and there is a delay in the flag, as we had this season. Jordan then comes out to Virgil.

“The thought initially was ‘it can’t be a penalty because it’s offside so we need to check the offside first’. I think I said to the VAR ‘if it’s not offside, I’m going to give a penalty’.

“I have watched it back so many times. I genuinely don’t think Pickford has done anything apart from try to spread himself but he did it in the wrong way, as the injury shows.

“We have all, myself included, not thought about the challenge as much as we should have done.

“We could still have given offside and sent Pickford off. What I was surprised about looking at it afterwards was that nothing was expected on-field in terms of a red card. None of the players were asking for that.”
