  • Pinnick optimistic Super Eagles will win FIFA World Cup soon

The President, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Melvin Pinnick, has expressed the hope that Nigeria’s Super Eagles will one day win the FIFA World Cup
Pinnick expressed the hope on Friday in Uyo after playing in the maiden novelty match between SWAN Selected team and Akwa Ibom Sports Arena team.
The NFF president said he decided to honour the invitation to play in the match having in mind that if he failed to do so it could be taken as if he got hamstring injury or simply refused to participate.
Pinnick, who played in the colours of SWAN Selected side throughout the second half of the match, described sports journalists as critical elements in Nigerian football reportage.
“We believe in working together. It has been an amazing support from sports journalists. One day we will win the World Cup.
Also, Paul Bassey, the Senior Special Assistant to Gov. Udom Emmanuel on sports, congratulated SWAN Selected on their victory over the Akwa Ibom team.
“Football knows no home turf. If you are a good team and on a good pitch, you can win anywhere.
“What you do today is exemplary, I wish we had started it earlier than now
“I promise that whenever we have a home game and we are on a training pitch and there is flood light, we will always do it again and again.’’
He said that sports writing remains his “ medium’’ which he could return to at the end of his assignment
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that in the match played under flood light Friday night at the Training Pitch, Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, SWAN Selected defeated their host s3-1.
NAN reports that the sports journalists led 2-0 in the first half of the novelty match before the homers which had Nse Essien, a state legislator representing Onna State Constituency, reduced the tally.
The SWAN Selected added the third goal to lift the maiden trophy.
The match was organised ahead of Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier (Match Day 3) between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Mediterranean Knights of Libya.

2018 Amputee World Cup: Federation commends Pinnick for financial support

Princess-Carol Ngozi, Vice President, Nigeria Amputee Football Federation (NAFF), has commended Amaju Pinnick, the President of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for his financial support to the national Amputee World Cup-bound team.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Pinnick made a pledge of 2.5 million dollars and 5,000 dollars to the players on Friday in Lagos to support their participation in the World Cup.
NAN also reports that the team known as “Special Eagles” will be recording its first outing in the 2018 edition of the Amputee World Cup holding in Mexico from Oct 24 to Nov. 5.
Ngozi told NAN that she was impressed with Pinnick’s gesture and support to the Special Eagles that were preparing to fly the country’s flag in the forthcoming world tournament.
“The amputee football players are very happy with Pinnick, personally, I am overwhelmed with his kindness and financial assistance to the players at this period of preparations and time of need.
“We really appreciate him because his support will go a long way to facilitate most of our buildup programmes for this competition and put smiles on the faces of the footballers,” she said.
Also Fred Edoreh, an amputee football fan and immediate past chairman of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Lagos chapter, said that Pinnick’s support had given the footballers a sense of belonging.
Edoreh told NAN that Pinnick, who was at the 2018 Lagos Chapter of SWAN Cup, embraced the World Cup-bound footballers and pledged his support to further encourage them towards a successful outing.
“What Pinnick did yesterday speaks volume in the football sector, he simply exhibited to the Special Eagles that he was aware of their existence, plight and gave them hope.
“The boys are very exited, with such support from the NFF president, who have by words and action shown them that football is one irrespective of physical status,” he said.
He urged individuals and corporate bodies to support the national team that had worked hard to book the World Cup ticket, adding that football gives hope and entertainment to all.
The fan added that para athletes had brought honour to the nation in the Commonwealth, African Games and Paralympics, adding that amputee football had the potential to open another vista for the physically challenged.
NAN reports that the World Amputee Football Federation (WAFF) organised World Cup match fixtures have Nigeria drawn in Group E with Brazil, defending champions Russia and El Salvador.

  • NFF crisis: No Supreme Court order stopping Pinnick – Keyamo

Human rights lawyer Festus Keyamo (SAN) has said there is no Supreme Court order stopping Amaju Pinnick from acting as President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

According to Keyamo, the Supreme Court also never installed Chris Giwa as NFF President, neither were both men parties to any suit where such orders were made.

Keyamo, Pinnick’s lawyer, stated this yesterday in a statement made available to newsmen on the crisis rocking the football house.

The Director, Strategic Communications for the President Muhammadu Buhari’s 2019 presidential campaign, described people making such claims, as “uninformed and/or deliberately mischievous.”

He traced the source of the rumour to two press releases issued by the office of the Minister for Sports, Solomon Dalung, on July 2 and August 21.

He advised “football lovers, stakeholders and the general public” to ignore the reports.

The lawyer further explained that Giwa’s fight to become the NFF President had become academic because Pinnick’s tenure expired last night.

According to him, “the tenure of office which is the subject of dispute of the case filed by Giwa’s group since 2014, lapsed on the 26th of August.”

Keyamo said: “We hereby challenge anybody who disputes this to publish the Supreme Court Judgment or Order where the names of Amaju Pinnick or Chris Giwa were ever mentioned in any portion of the judgment or as even parties to the case. The fact is that the court processes filed in the Supreme Court matter do not bear their names as parties to the suit whatsoever.”

Giwa and Pinnick have been involved in a recurring leadership tussle since 2014 culminating in an appeal reaching the Supreme Court.

“What the Supreme Court did was to relist the case and remit it back to the Federal High Court for expeditious determination on its merits, while firmly declining the Motion brought by the plaintiffs (Giwa) in the matter to invoke its general powers under Section 22 of the Supreme Court Act to deal with the substantive suit,” he added.

Keyamo explained that although the Supreme Court restored all previous orders made in the proceedings in the suit, it did not matter.

He said: “In any event, and much more fundamentally, neither Amaju Pinnick nor Chris Giwa is even mentioned in the said ‘previous’ orders, nor were either of them made parties to the suit and, therefore, would not ordinarily be bound by Orders given in that suit “Another question to be asked is that if Giwa and his team had a Supreme Court Order granting him the right to the NFF Presidency, why would they have to go back to the Federal High Court to surreptitiously procure a fresh ex parte order dated June 5, 2018 for the same purpose and containing reliefs totally different from the “previous” orders of 19th day of September 2014?”

The lawyer stated that an ex parte order obtained by Giwa on July 2, expired after 14 days.

“The implication of the foregoing is that the Interim Order which Chris Giwa and his team are parading as entitling them to the leadership of the NFF automatically lapsed on the 16th of July, 2018,” Keyamo said.

The lawyer accused Giwa’s team of delaying the court case.

He said: “Since the 2nd of July, 2018, the court has sat four times (July 4th 2018; July 10th, 2018; July 31st 2018 and; August 17th 2018). However, neither the matter nor motions have been heard, with the case always adjourned.

“These adjournments happened at the behest of Giwa’s lawyers, who obviously are not interested in hearing the matter, thus always raising one technical issue or the other to ensure adjournment of the matter (which they always celebrated as if the case had been decided).

“Meanwhile, all this while, they were busy in Abuja parading themselves as court-recognised NFF based on an expired ex-parte order while they refused to allow the court to go into the substantive matter to determine it on its merit.”

He said by adjourning the case indefinitely allegedly at Giwa’s behest, the Federal High Court had not complied with the order of the Supreme Court to hear the matter on time.

“In summary, it should, therefore, be noted that the court gave an ex-parte interim order removing someone who is not party to a suit from office, installing another who is not party to the suit, declined to take the motion challenging that interim order and then adjourned the matter sine die (indefinitely).”

He debunked a claim by Dalung that both parties (Giwa and Amaju) went to the court and have benefited at one point or the other in this regard.

He said: “This is definitely a non-factual statement as Amaju Pinnick and his Board have never ever taken football matters to court or sued any person in an ordinary court of law over football matters.

“Amaju Pinnick and his Board are, however, duty bound to respond to any court Summons and appear before the court to explain to the court that the matter, such as this, is a football matter not subject to the court’s jurisdiction.

“This was what was done since 2014 when Giwa’s group sued the NFF. Unfortunately, this motion is still pending before the court in the lamentable circumstances recounted here previously.”

Keyamo stated that his client was not bothered by the threat of contempt proceedings by Chris Giwa and his team, describing it as ’empty’.

  • FIFA to suspend Nigeria if Giwa remains in NFF offices

The Bureau of the FIFA Council will next Monday August 20 suspend Nigeria from engaging in football activities if the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) offices are not handed back to the legitimate NFF executive committee under President Amaju Melvin Pinnick, who was duly elected on 30 September 2014,

Nigerian football politics took a new dimension last Monday, when Chris Giwa resumed at the offices of the Nigeria Football Federation in Abuja, as the president of the football body.

Giwa has been locked in a leadership tussle with the Amaju Pinnick-led NFF board, after an order from a Jos High Court stopped the election which brought Pinnick to office on September 30, 2014 in Warri, Delta State.

According to a media statement on the official website of FIFA on Tuesday, the NFF will be suspended with immediate effect for contravening art. 14 par. 1 i) and art. 19, as well as art. 14 par. 1 a) of the FIFA Statutes.

The statement also stated that the suspension would be lifted only once the NFF, under President Amaju Melvin Pinnick and General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, confirms that it has been given back effective control of the NFF and its offices.

Furthermore, the Bureau also decided that if the suspension of the NFF takes effect, the Nigerian team, the Falconets currently competing in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup France 2018 will still be allowed to continue to participate in the tournament on an exceptional basis given that the tournament is underway.

  • Pinnick vs Giwa: Gov. Okowa hails Buhari for saving Nigerian football

The Executive Governor of Delta State, Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Authur Okowa on Wednesday heaped praises on His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) for saving Nigeria huge embarrassment with his good –natured intervention in the unseemly leadership crisis that was foisted on the Nigeria Football Federation.

“President Buhari’s intervention was in the very best interest of Nigeria, and those of us who appreciate the power and essence of sport will continue to commend him. He saved Nigeria’s image and saved our country from untoward consequences.

“I insist that Nigeria as a country and those in important positions, as individuals, must make it a duty to constantly promote, project and encourage our own shining stars, our best materials. The President of NFF, Mr. Amaju Melvin Pinnick is a shining star of this country who has attained a position (1st Vice Presidency of CAF) that no other Nigerian before him has attained. We have a responsibility to project and promote him to reach even higher heights.

“I am saying this not just because Pinnick is a worthy son of Delta State; I am saying this because he is now a global citizen deserving of our encouragement and love. As a nation, we should project our best in every field so that they can reach the zenith of their careers. I am looking forward to Pinnick becoming the President of CAF in a few years.”

The number one citizen of Delta State spoke on Wednesday morning when Members of the NFF Executive Committee paid him a courtesy call at the Government House, Asaba, to appreciate him for his support for Nigerian Football and the positive investment in hosting the African Senior Athletics Championship, starting in Asaba the same day.

Governor Okowa affirmed that sport serves the purposes of keeping healthy, winning laurels and making money, and that a sport –passionate nation like Nigeria deserves a rich assemblage of visionary and dedicated football administrators as can be seen in the present NFF Executive Committee led by Pinnick.

Speaking earlier, NFF 1st Vice President Barr. Seyi Akinwunmi, and afterwards Pinnick, commended Governor Okowa for his support and encouragement of sport in Delta State. Akinwunmi, also a Member of the CAF Youth Competitions Committee, said other States should emulate Delta State in support of sport programmes as sport encouragement amounts to youth empowerment. Pinnick, a former Delta FA Chairman and one –time Executive Chairman of Delta State Sports Commission, praised Governor Okowa’s vision in the construction of the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, while heaping encomiums on other Governors who have continued to encourage, support and promote football, nay sports in their different States across the Federation.

Also present at the occasion were Members of the Delta State Executive Council, as well as NFF Executive Committee members Ibrahim Musa Gusau, Sharif Inuwa, Babagana Kalli, Yusuf Ahmed ‘Fresh,’ Suleiman Yahaya-Kwande, Felix Anyansi-Agwu, Chidi Ofo Okenwa, Aisha Falode, Musa Duhu and Mohammed Alkali. There were also Acting Chairman, Delta State Football Association, Edema Fuludu and the secretary, Azuka Ogosi. NFF 2nd Vice President Shehu Dikko and General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi arrived at the end of the meeting as their flight from Abuja was delayed.

  • Pinnick vs Giwa: Court adjourns case till tomorrow

The suit on the lingering tussle for the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation by Amaju Pinnick and Chris Giwa received yet another adjournment on Monday by the Federal high Court in Jos.

In contrast with widespread hope that the case would eventually be dispensed with after last week’s intervention by the Presidency which led to Pinnick-led board returning to the Glass House, the Jos court adjourned hearing of the matter till Wednesday.

The court stated Monday that it would sit on August 1 for hearing of the motion to vacate its previous orders granting recognition to Giwa to lead the NFF while invalidating the process that brought in Pinnick as the soccer governing body’s president.

Pinnick’s lawyers had filed a counter-motion to dismiss the orders, and the court has now adjourned till August 1, for hearing of their plea.

While Giwa’s case was dismissed at the Court of Arbitration for Sports, and even slammed with world-wide ban from football matters by FIFA, the Jos football club proprietor is taking solace in the Jos High Court ruling that upheld his August 26 election in Abuja.

FIFA however is backing Pinnick and has been consistent in warning that any attempt to impose Giwa on Nigerian football will face backlash of ban for the country.

Meanwhile, the Pinnick-led board of the NFF has slated an Emergency Congress for August 2 at Asaba, Delta state.

The Congress is coming as a prelude to the NFF General Elections fixed for Katsina State on September 30.

Interestingly, Giwa had proposed a similar Congress on July 27 but shelve due to the setting up of Football Stakeholders Committee by the Minister for Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung.

Other issue on the agenda, according to our source, is that of the Federal High Court case between the Pinnick faction and that of Giwa.

The Pinnick board is also expected to use the opportunity to fine-tune strategies ahead of the September elections with interested candidates, at the Congress meeting, expected to commence their campaign for various positions in the federation.

The gathering is also expected to review Super Eagle’s outing at the last World Cup in Russia and discuss the qualifications matches for the next African Nations Cup finals holding Cameroon in June next year.

Mention will also be made about the impending FIFA ban of Nigeria from international football.

Similarly, the Stakeholders Committee that was set up by Dalung, is expected to mediate into the crisis and come out with a peaceful resolution in order to avoid FIFA axe.

A five member of Committee is billed to visit FIFA headquarters in Zurich to explain the Federal government stand on the crisis and appeal to the world soccer body that the crisis would be resolved.

  • NFF crisis: Pinnick resumes office as DSS evicts Giwa

The Amaju Pinnick-led Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation is back to the federation’s secretariat to direct affairs in earnest, NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi said on Monday.

Sanusi who also said he had returned to his duties in the federation’s secretariat at Wuse in Abuja told the News Agency of Nigeriathe situation was now under control.

NAN reports that the atmosphere at the secretariat’s Wuse Zone 7 offices was calm as staff went about their duties.

A number of Department of State Services officials, who were reported to have taken over the premises some minutes earlier, were also seen on duty.

“I am back to my office, and the Pinnick-led board is back,’’ Sanusi told NAN.

“When the DSS officials came in, they refused to allow anyone to enter the premises. But I came in and spoke with the staff and urged them to be law-abiding.

“I told them to bear in mind that they are civil servants and should not get involved in the politics. Thereafter, I ushered all into their offices and everyone is going about their duties,’’ he added.

NAN reports that earlier this month, the Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung, had urged the NFF to comply with a Supreme Court order on Chris Giwa’s 2014 election.

The minister had insisted that the directive was a reaction to a written notification by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice asking the Sports Ministry to ensure compliance.

The development has since prompted FIFA president Gianni Infantino to warn that Nigeria risked being made to face the sanctions the world governing body may apply.

Asked if he could see if there was a contradiction in federal government’s actions on the matter, Sanusi said: “I don’t think that there is any contradiction in government’s actions in this matter.

“If government had given directives (earlier), we would not have been where we are’’.

He however assured that the situation was not going to affect the development and organisation of football in the country.

“By the grace of God, we are going to do everything humanly possible to move the game forward, and I have always said that honesty is the best policy.

“Whatever you are doing, you have to stand by the truth because posterity will judge you’’.

FIFA only recognises Pinnick as NFF president – Infantino

FIFA President, Gianni Infantino says the world football ruling body recognises only Amaju Pinnick as president of Nigeria Football Federation, and will not accept any outside interference in NFF’s affairs.

Infantino, while responding to questions at a press conference in Moscow on Friday, said Pinnick was duly elected and in accordance with FIFA rules.

“The situation is very clear. Pinnick was duly elected some years ago, and FIFA is aware of all this.

“It is also clear to all within the family that there can be no interference in the running of the national federations by any party, especially those outside the football family.

“So, Pinnick is the President of NFF for FIFA, because he is the one elected,’’ he said.

The FIFA president added that Nigeria as a member-association of FIFA, would then be at the risk of facing the world body’s sanctions if the situation continued as it is now.

The NFF has Chris Giwa as its president currently, owing to a compliance with a court order.

Giwa had obtained a Jos court order to take over the running of affairs at the NFF in compliance with a Supreme Court order.

The apex court had directed all parties involved in the matter to return to the lower courts for another look at the case against NFF’s Sept. 30, 2014 elections in Warri.

Giwa had insisted that his earlier election on July 24, 2014 in Abuja should stand, while Pinnick’s election in Warri took place contrary to laid-down regulations.

…as FIFA names Pinnick match commissioner

Sequel to the sack of the Amaju Pinnick led executive of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) by the Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Barr. Solomon Dalung on Monday, the President of the world football governing body (FIFA), Gianni Infantino on Tuesday met with Pinnick in Russia over the crisis.

The FIFA boss met with Pinnick before the commencement of the ongoing round 16 match between Sweden and Switzerland.

A copy of the match start list sent exclusively to TheNewsGuru.com also showed that the embattled NFF boss was the match commissioner.

Recall that the minister on Monday ordered the Amaju Pinnick-led NFF executive committee to give way to that led by Chris Giwa in compliance with a Supreme Court ruling.

In a statement signed by the minister’s special adviser on media, Nneka Anibeze, the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports development directed the Nigeria Football Federation, a parastatal under it, to comply with the judgment of the Supreme Court delivered on April 27, 2018, which restored the orders of the Federal High Court, setting aside the purported election into the Executive Committee of the NFF held on September 30, 2014.

It is expected that the meeting between the two football governing body heads will spare Nigeria from the impending ban by FIFA over the minister’s pronouncement of the Chris Giwa led NFF faction as authentic.
