Ganduje reacts over Anyim’s defection to APC

Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has described the defection of Sen Pius Anyim to the APC, as “a huge blessing”.

Ganduje’s excitement was captured in a statement by Mr Edwin Olofu, his Chief Press Secretary.

The statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, quoted Ganduje as saying that Anyim’s wealth of experience would be beneficial to the APC.

Ganduje had earlier received Anyim, who defected from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), into the APC at a ceremony in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi capital.

“I’m elated to receive such an important personality into our party.

“I want to assure you, on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, that you are welcome to the largest political party in Africa.

“Be assured that we will give you equal opportunity like old members of our party so that you can come to the table with your huge experience and followership,” Ganduje had said.

The APC leader said that the South-East geo-political region could not continue to be in the opposition, urging the region to join mainstream politics.

APC begins moves to de-marginalise Igbos – Ganduje

Meanwhile, the National  Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Abdulahi Ganduje, has said the party has initiated moves to de-marginalise Igbos to place them in the limelight of national politics.

Ganduje made the assertion on Sunday during the APC South East zonal meeting in Abakaliki, noting that Igbos had shown massive support to the party and the President Bola Tinubu led administration presently.

The APC national chairman said that though a line must be drawn between marginalisation and low performance of the south east in the APC, the party had decided to break the vicious cycle of marginalisation.

“The present appointments offered the zone by President Bola Tinubu’s administration is heartwarming and with more involvement in the party’s affairs, more would be achieved.

“We must break this cycle of marginalisation with determination, unity and total support to the party and President Bola Tinubu led administration, he said.

He noted that Ebonyi had followed Imo’s trail in massively promoting the party’s activities and thanked Gov. Francis Nwifuru for sustaining the party’s ideals in the state.

“The challenge before us presently is how to claim Anambra, Enugu and Abia and must get all stakeholders together to achieve this goal.

Gov. Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi thanked the party’s leaders for honouring the meeting in the state noting that the party is presently rooted in the state and south east.

Nwifuru noted that Ebonyi had a policy of inclusiveness which had made all stakeholders in the state to be presently under the APC roof.

“The massive defection of opposition stakeholders to APC on July 13  attests to the fact that persuasion works more than bickering and fighting,” he said.

Gov. Hope Uzodimma of Imo in his remark, said it is an ugly coincidence that the APC is ruling Nigeria in these hard times  occasioned by the world economic meltdown.

The Chairman of the South East Governors Forum said that many citizens of the country experience excruciating hardship with some going into penury.

“People have to know that there is global economic meltdown with some currencies exchanging 15,000 and 20,000 to one dollar.

“I however, have hope that if the tested policies of President Bola Tinubu administration, are well implemented, Nigerians would receive the much needed succour., he said.

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu in his remarks, urged people of the south east zone to identify with the federal government’s efforts to de-marginalise the zone.

“President Bola Tinubu has given Ndigbo more than the vote cast for him during the elections.

“It is presently left for us to repay him for his good works because when ones shows appreciation, he gets more,” he said.

He noted that the president offered Igbos lucrative positions in his government as high- ranking ministers, deputy speaker of the house of representatives among others.

“The process for the south east development commission bill which would solve the numerous challenges confronting  Igbos, has been finalised and awaiting the president’s accent , he said.

Ebonyi: Former Senate President, Anyim, others dump PDP

Former Senate President, Pius Anyim, alongside former gubernatorial candidates of opposition parties in Ebonyi on Saturday defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Anyim, formerly of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), defected to the APC with some of his supporters during the grand finale of the APC campaign for the Local Government Area (LGA) elections in Abakaliki.

Anyim, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), defected alongside a former Senator and PDP Gubernatorial Candidate in the 2023 general elections, Sen. Obinna Ogba and that of the Labour Party, Chief Edward Nkwegu.

Also some former members of the National and State Assemblies as well as former  Local Government Area Chairmen among others, all from the opposition also defected to the APC.

Anyim, in his remarks, said that Ebonyi had always been a one political family and the massive defection of opposition members to the party, attested to such fact.

The former Senate President said his intention  to join the APC had been hatched for long as remarked by former Gov David Umahi.

“The time I wanted this to happen, Umahi was not ready and the time, he wanted it, it didn’t turn out the way we wanted.

“We however, thank God that it has worked smoothly as we all are presently under the same roof,” he said.

The former SGF said that the defection was not just about him but Ebonyi people as consultations were widely made before a final resolution was taken.

“We wanted to appreciate Gov. Francis Nwifuru’s great works and reconciling various political divides of the state, making them stay under one roof.

“We are aware of the enormous economic and socio cultural challenges confronting the country and the need to patriotically support President Bola Tinubu to surmount the challenges.

“We intend to collaborate with all federal appointees from the state especially the Minister of Works, Umahi to support and step down President Tinubu’s life uplifting policies to Ebonyi people,” he said.

The APC National Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, commended Gov. Nwifuru for sustaining his predecessor’s ideals of enlarging the APC in the state and south east geo-political zone.

“The APC is presently de-marginalising the south east zone by placing it in the mainstream of national politics.

“The ministerial among other appointments given by President Tinubu to indigenes of the zone, massive infrastructural development in the zone among others,, attests to this fact,” he said.

Gov. Francis Nwifuru commended the decampees for their bold decision to join the APC and assured that they would be adequately accommodated in the party.

“I thank my predecessor and father, Sen. David Umahi, for laying this strong foundation for the party’s growth in Ebonyi and President Bola Tinubu for his fatherly support to us in all ramifications.

“Ebonyi will develop more rapidly when its leaders and people stay under one roof, to actualise the people’s charter of needs mantra of the administration,”.

The Minister of Works, Sen. David Umahi thanked President Tinubu for ensuring the growth of the party in the state and urged Nigerians to support him in making the country great.

Goodwill messages were delivered on the occasion by Gov. Hope Uzodimma of Imo, national officers of the APC, among others.

Former Senate President, Pius Anyim replies Wike over comment on Peter Obi

Former Senate president and Secretary of the Government of the federation (SGF) to ex-president, Goodluck Jonathan, Pius Anyim  has reacted to accusations from Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike that he supported Obi’s vice president candidacy in 2019 against the wish of Anyim and some other politicians in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Anyim explained that he was not at the convention that produced Obi as Atiku’s running mate in 2019 and as such was not a party to it.

The former Senate president, made this known via a press statement made available to journalists on Thursday.

Anyim added that he needs to refresh Wike’s memory in order not to mislead or confuse the public about his supportership of any candidate in 2019.

His statement partly reads”  I want to state categorically for governor Wike’s recollection, that i did not and never share any view with him on any candidate in 2019; neither his own candidate who then was Gov Tambuwal nor H/E Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

”Governor Wike may need to confirm from Gov. Peter that from the beginning to the end of 2019 elections, he enjoyed my encouragement and goodwill”

”The purpose of this clarification is to keep the records straight and to reconfirm to Gov. Wike that he is mistaken if the Pius Anyim he referred to is my humble self”

PDP endorses Pius Anyim for 2023 presidency

Executives of the FCT Chapter of the PDP have thrown their weight behind the presidential ambition of a former Senate President, Chief Anyim Pius Anyim.

The endorsement was announced late on Thursday in Abuja when the party chieftains met with Anyim as part of his ongoing nationwide consultations on his political aspiration.

Anyim, who is from Ebonyi in the South East, is one of over a dozen aspirants, wanting to become the president of Nigeria in the next political dispensation.

Receiving the executives, Anyim said he was fully aware of the socio-political and developmental needs of the FCT.

Anyim said that his understanding of the FCT had positioned him as the presidential aspirant with the best ideas to tackle the problems of the city.

He said that he had lived all his working life in the FCT, dating back to 1989, noting that he had been part of the growth and development of the FCT.

Anyim said that he had clear ideas of how to tackle the challenges that had been plaguing the FCT, following the rapid growth witnessed in the city.

“I am one of you. FCT is the landlord of Nigeria and I am one of you. When I completed my NYSC in Sokoto State in 1989, I moved down to Abuja and I have remained here till date.

“I, therefore, have the confidence as one of your own to ask for your support. Entrust me with the critical assignment to rebuild our dear country. I promise you that I will not fail you.

“With your votes for me at the presidential primaries, you will be making a worthy and invaluable investment in building the Nigeria we and our children will be proud of.

“Together, let us go for a greater Nigeria, where security, peace, unity, inclusiveness and prosperity will be our collective heritage,” NAN quotes him as saying.

Anyim said that he had a clear understanding of the problems facing Nigeria as a country and that he had solutions to the problems.

In his remarks, the leader of the group, Mr Zakka Sunday, who is also the FCT Chapter Chairman of the PDP, assured Anyim of their unalloyed support.

He expressed his delight that the former secretary to the government of the federation understood the problems facing the FCT.

Sunday assured Anyim that they would support him to become the president of Nigeria in 2023.

  • 2023: CSOs, northern youths back Anyim for President

2023: CSOs, northern youths back Anyim for President

No fewer than 30 youth groups and Civil Society Organisations in the Northern part of the country have likened the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, and Northern Elders Forum, NEF, to armies without combatants, ahead of the race to the Aso Rock Villa come 2023.

The groups which met under the aegis of Arewa Concerned Civil Society Organisations of Nigeria, ACCSON, however declared support for the 2023 presidential ambition of former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim.

They argued that only two regions out of the six geo political regions have not occupied either the President or Vice-President seat since 1999 till date, which was unfair and against democracy tenets.

At a briefing in Kaduna yesterday, spokesperson of ACCSON Abdulsalam Kazeem, said Anyim, a symbol of national Unity has responded to their request to contest the 2023 presidency.

“To set the record straight, on 23rd of March 2021, over 30 Civil Society Organizations of Northern Extraction met at Mallam Aminu Kano Center for Democratic Research Mambayya House Kano State on way forward and the Unity of our nation.

“The Civil Society Organisations include: Arewa Youth Assembly for sustainable growth, Arewa Youth and Students Forum; Concerned Northern Forum;North East Peace Movement; Arewa Youth Council of Nigeria; Northern Youth Assembly for Tranquility; Northern Women Initiative Forum; North East Development Council; North Central Grassroots Foundation; Arewa Female Youth Ambassadors Peace Initiative; Initiative of Youth Advocate on Humanitarian Affairs;Arewa Youth Movement of Nigeria, Tiv Youth Initiative for Peace, Unity and Development, Middle Belt Vanguard; Northern Youth Network For Good Governance; etc.

“We x-rayed the current happenings; which includes unity in diversity, rotational presidency, insecurity, youth unemployment and inclusiveness in governance, among others. The leadership of various organizations at that sitting supported a one Nigeria project. We realize that only two regions out of the six geo-political regions have not occupied either President or vice-President seat since 1999 till date, which is unfair and against any democratic standard.

“For instance; between 1999 and 2007, it was South West and North East, and between 2007 to 2015 it was between North West, South South and North West while between 2015 till date it is between North West and South West! The South East for instance, are part and parcel of the Nigerian project from day one till date; and they should be treated fairly just like other zones of the country.”

”They too deserve to get what others have gotten, because they have paid their dues in terms of contributions and consolidation of Nigeria.”

“The region is being captured in all other sectors of the Nigerian economy based on federal character from 1999 till date, but are denied either of the two positions mentioned earlier.”

  • I’ll contest presidency, zoning or not – Pius Anyim

I’ll contest presidency, zoning or not – Pius Anyim

Former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim says he will contest for presidency in 2023 whether the Peoples Democratic Party will zone it to the southeast or not.

Anyim made the disclosure on Saturday in an interview with newsmen.

He said that the party was being repositioned.

The former Secretary to the Government of the Federation noted that the party’s national convention would signal the commencement of its political activities.

“Posters of my presidential bid and agitations by groups for me to contest flooded the social media in 2020 and I disassociated myself from such calls.

“I felt that it was too early for such a declaration, to enable the present administration to concentrate on governance.

“Such calls resurfaced in the early part of 2021 and I chose to be quiet over the issue.

“We currently have less than 18 months to the next elections, and I feel the time is ripe to indicate my interest,” Anyim said.

He said that the zoning committee instituted by the party was only saddled with zoning party positions and not other positions.

“Zoning of such positions was deferred but nothing stops anyone from South-East Zone from contesting the presidency even if it is not zoned to it.

“The most important thing is that the party’s national convention is a sort of rebirth for a group of people who have recovered from a setback.

“The party members are focused and determined,” he added.

Anyim said that in spite of the party’s seeming conflict with its former Chairman, Chief Uche Secondus, he remained a friend to many members.

“He is particularly my friend and we do not have any problem with him.”

“The issue is that the party needed to move but be assured that he is not going into wilderness,” Anyim said.

News of Gulak’s death put me in distress-Pius Anyim

A former President of the Senate, Pius Anyim, has said the murder of Ahmed Gulak put him in distress.

Recall that the political adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan, Ahmed Gulak, was shot dead in Owerri, Imo State.

In a statement made available to TheNewsGuru, Anyim noted that Gulak was a man of conviction and courage.

The statement read in part: “30th of May, 2021, is no doubt the darkest Sunday of my life. The news of the gruesome murder of my friend and colleague, Hon. Ahmed Gulak knocked me down into distress, and it took me till this morning of 31st May, 2021, to regain my senses from the shock.

Hon. Ahmed Gulak was my colleague in President Goodluck’s Administration. He was a man of conviction and courage. He was endowed with great intellectual prowess that enabled him to have unusual clarity of thought and expression: a dedicated nationalist and a faithful friend.

Losing Gulak, like other innocent, Nigerians to unknown assailants is the darkest point in the senseless and mindless violence growing in the country and South East. This death is one too many. The security agencies owe humanity the duty to unravel and bring to book those behind this dastardly act. My heart goes to the family of Hon. Gulak”.
