  • Four dead, five injured in Russia military plane crash

A Russian military cargo plane has  crashed in the city of Ryazan in the Southern part of the Moscow.

An Ilyushin Il-76 military cargo plane crashed and caught fire while landing near Russia’s western city of Ryazan on Friday, killing four of the nine people on board.

Four crew members died instantly whilst five others sustained injuries and have been hospitalized.

The incident happened during a training flight the defense ministry said in a statement quoted by local news agencies.

The plane was on a training flight without cargo when the crew decided to land because of an engine malfunction but it was partially destroyed when it hit the ground.

“According to preliminary information, four people died as a result of a plane crash in the area of the Mikhailovsky highway in the city of Ryazan,” the regional government’s crisis unit said in a statement, as quoted by the TASS state news agency.

The defence ministry also said that the injured crew members were taken to hospital.

The plane was an Il-76 military transport aircraft, which was first manufactured in the Soviet Union in the late 1960s.

The aircraft crashed into a field close to residential buildings near a highway, causing a fire that has since been extinguished.

No details were given about where the aircraft was headed when it crashed in Ryazan, around 200 kilometres southeast of the Russian capital.

Meanwhile, several military planes have crashed this month near Russia’s border with Ukraine, where Moscow has been engaged in ferocious fighting since invading in late February.

  • FAAN speaks on Tuesday’s reported plane crash

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, has released a statement about Tuesday evening’s reported Lagos plane crash.

It would be recalled that on Tuesday evening, an unidentified private jet caused major gridlock at the Ikeja-along bus stop, Lagos State.

Many on social media believed the plane had crash-landed on the area, while others claimed it was damaged and was being towed to a nearby Federal Airport Authority (FAAN) facility when it became stranded on the road.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the plane with one missing wing had stopped at the always-bustling roadway, causing panic among road users.

However, in a swift response, FAAN addressed the issue in a statement on Tuesday evening adding that the news of a plane crash was untrue.

The statement reads: “The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria would like to inform the general public to disregard the news making the rounds on social media about an alleged crash at Ikeja Airport.

“The aircraft was sold by the owner to a buyer, who was taking it to its final destination.
    Thank You.”

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Emergency Agency, while debunking reports of the plane crash, said “nothing of such happened”.

Highlighting plane crash into buildings at the Ikeja area of Lagos, TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) recalls the Dana Air Flight 0992, a scheduled Nigerian domestic passenger flight from Abuja to Lagos, Nigeria. On 3 June 2012, the McDonnell Douglas MD-83 aircraft serving the route suffered a dual-engine failure during its approach to Lagos.

It failed to reach its intended destination and crashed onto buildings, killing all 153 people on board and six on the ground.

Nigerian Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) concluded that both aircraft’s engines had lost power during the approach to Lagos.  Incorrect assembly had severed the engines’ fuel line, causing fuel not be delivered to both engines.

During the initial sequence of the engine failure, the pilots opted not to declare an emergency until the second engine lost power during the flight’s final approach.

Lack of situational awareness and poor decision-making by the pilots eventually caused the aircraft to crash into buildings.

  • Crash: What President Buhari said about death of 2 NAF pilots

Crash: What President Buhari said about death of 2 NAF pilots

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed sadness over the death of two Nigerian Air Force (NAF) pilots in a plane crash on Tuesday in Kaduna.

The President’s media aide, Malam Garba Shehu, in a statement on Wednesday night in Abuja, said the president made his feelings known while reacting to the death of the two pilots, Abubakar Alkali and Elijah Haruna Karatu.

“I am shocked beyond words by the demise of these two promising young men who risked their lives in the service of the country.

“There is no reward big enough to pay for the services of these young and dedicated professional airmen in the service of their country,” the president said.

While extending his sympathies to the Chief of Air Staff and the families of the deceased, Buhari called for “more safety measures to forestall tragic incidents of this kind.”

The president, who welcomed the decision of the NAF authorities to investigate the cause of the crash, called for the publication and implementation of the recommendations of reports of past investigations into air crashes.

He said the publication and implementation of the reports would help to prevent future tragedies and also assist families and friends of the deceased to put a closure to the tragic incidents, he added.

A U.S. military aircraft that was said to have four service members aboard crashed during a NATO exercise in Norway, officials said Friday.

The Marine MV-22 Osprey went missing during an extreme weather exercise called Cold Response but has since been located. It was not clear what condition it was in, a U.S. military official said.

Weather prevented a helicopter from landing at the crash site, and the condition of those aboard was not clear, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre North Norway said.

“We’ve discovered an aircraft that has crashed. We’ve seen no sign of life,” Nordland police chief of staff Bent Eilertsen told Reuters.

Emergency services were working to send a rescue team, the coordination center said.

The Osprey, which is a tilt-rotor aircraft, was taking part in a cold weather exercise and there was bad weather at the time of the incident, the U.S. official said.

The II Marine Expeditionary Force said in a statement it was aware of the incident, which is being assessed.

“Norwegian civil authorities are leading the search and rescue efforts at this time,” it said. “We are grateful for their efforts and will assist them … in all manners possible.”

The plane was on a training exercise and had been due to land at around 1800 CET (1700 GMT). Weather was bad in the area, with conditions worsening.

  • Brazilian singer, Mendonca, dies in plane crash

Brazilian singer, Mendonca, dies in plane crash

Marilia Mendonca, one of the hottest young stars of Brazil’s answer to country music, died in a plane crash on Friday, officials said.

The 26-year-old mega-popular “sertanejo” singer was killed when the small plane she was travelling in crashed in Minas Gerais state, firefighters said.

The crash also killed the Latin Grammy-winner’s producer and one of her uncles — who worked with the singer — as well as the two pilots.

Authorities have launched an investigation, said local police chief Ivan Lopes.

“We still cannot say what caused the plane to crash, but there is damage that suggests that the plane collided with a (power) antenna before falling,” Lopes said at a press conference.

Local TV showed footage of firefighters working to remove the bodies from the plane, which crashed in a rocky area next to a waterfall.

The accident took place in a rural area near the city of Caratinga, where the artist was scheduled to give a concert later Friday.

Mendonca, who won a 2019 Latin Grammy for best sertanejo album, was wildly popular in her native Brazil and beyond, with 22 million followers on YouTube and more than eight million monthly listeners on Spotify.

  • Plane bursts into flames after hitting mango tree, all on board killed

Plane bursts into flames after hitting mango tree, all on board killed

Five people were killed on Tuesday when a cargo plane carrying fuel for the UN’s World Food Programme crashed near South Sudan’s capital Juba, airport officials said.

The aircraft — a Soviet-era Antonov An-26 transport plane — crashed shortly after taking off from Juba’s international airport, killing everyone onboard.

“One is a South Sudanese, two are Sudanese and two are Ukrainians,” David Subek, head of the South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority said.

The cargo plane belonging to a local operator was reportedly carrying 28 barrels of fuel for the WFP to Maban, a district housing more than 100,000 refugees.

According to the airport’s director general Kur Kuol, it hit a mango tree and caught fire.

“The people on board were burnt. They are in bad shape,” said Kuol.

South Sudan Red Cross said emergency workers had collected five bodies that were “burned beyond recognition”.

South Sudan, a young nation that achieved independence in 2011 and has been in the throes of a chronic economic and political crisis, lacks a reliable transport infrastructure, with plane crashes often blamed on overloading and poor weather.

President Salva Kiir on March 3 ordered the suspension of an airline after one of its planes crashed in the country’s east, killing all 10 people aboard including the two pilots.

The aircraft belonging to South Sudan Supreme Airlines crashed in Jonglei state shortly after taking off from Pieri.

Another plane owned by local company South West Aviation crashed in August last year killing four passengers and three crew.

The cargo plane had been carrying cash to the Wau region in the country’s northwest for Juba-based Opportunity Bank.

Overloading of planes is common in South Sudan, and was believed to have contributed to the 2015 crash of an Antonov plane in Juba that left 36 people dead.

In 2017, 37 people had a miraculous escape after their plane hit a fire truck on a runway in Wau before bursting into flames.

  • Billionaire, wife, son, five others die as plane crashes minutes after taking off

Billionaire, wife, son, five others die as plane crashes minutes after taking off

A small plane crashed into an empty building in the outskirts of Milan on Sunday, and its six passengers and two crew members all died, the Italian authorities said.

Police authorities said that on board were three Romanian, two French, one Canadian and two Italian citizens, but declined to reveal their identities. The pilot was from Romania, where the aircraft was registered, Milan’s public prosecutor said.

The Italian news media reported that the pilot was a Romanian billionaire on vacation with his family and friends, and that several of those killed had dual citizenship. One passenger was reportedly a little boy.

Italy’s air traffic controller, ENAV, said it lost radio and radar contact with the plane a few minutes after it took off. The plane didn’t send out any alarm, the public prosecutor, Tiziana Siciliano, told reporters at the scene. She said the flight recorder had been retrieved, according to The Associated Press.

The plane was heading to the Italian island of Sardinia when it went down early Sunday afternoon just south of Milan, minutes after taking off from Milan Linate Airport. The impact set ablaze a number of cars parked nearby, but the street was deserted at the time, and no one was killed on the ground.

Residents of the area told Italian television that they heard the engines of the plane stop and saw fire, before seeing the plane dive into a two-story building that was undergoing restoration.

“I saw something flying in the air, and then a loud noise; it was very scary,” Andrea Speciale, 19, a student, told the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera in a televised interview. “It was already flying low when it dove and crashed.”

Another witness, the owner of a pizza restaurant in San Donato Milanese, the town where the plane crashed, told the news agency Adnkronos that he heard a loud bang and walked out of his shop, then saw the bodies of a young boy and an adult on the ground.

Police footage from the scene showed cars still on fire and a long pipe of smoke coming from the devastated building, a warehouse with some office space belonging to Milan’s public transportation company.

Firefighters were retrieving the scattered components of the small plane in a large area that had been cordoned off by the authorities. The neighborhood contains an urban mix of residential buildings, large office spaces and warehouses next to a subway terminal.

The authorities were still trying to establish what happened but said that the plane’s trajectory seemed to suggest that the pilot had tried to veer and return to the airport shortly after flying over the local seaplane base and the densely inhabited areas southeast of Milan.

The Italian news agency ANSA quoted the national air safety agency, ANSV, as saying the aircraft was a PC-12, a single-engine, executive-type plane.
