The governorship candidate of Action Alliance (AA) in Plateau, Mr Amos Adamu, and his supporters, have defected to All Progressives Congress (APC).

Similarly, some members of working committee of the African Democratic Congress (ADP) and officials of New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) with their supporters have also joined force with the APC ahead of Saturday elections.

Adamu, who spoke at a brief ceremony in Jos on Wednesday, said that the decision to rejoin the APC with his supporters was to work for the victory of APC governorship candidate, Mr Nentawe Yilwatda.

Adamu said that Yilwatda “has the potential to pilot the affairs of the people of Plateau at all levels.

“It is on that note and for the interest of the good people of Plateau that I am stepping down my ambition to support somebody that I believe can do better than me at this moment in time.

“I will go back to my unit, ward and the entire 17 local governments and mobilise our supporters to work assiduously to ensure that Yilwatda emerge as the next governor of Plateau”.

Also speaking, ADP State Chairman, retired Capt. Fire Venmap, said that he also defected with the party executive members to join Yilwatda in actualising the victory of APC in the state.

Venmap said that he was returning home (APC) because he was one of the people that formed the APC in the state.

“I want to proudly tell you that we are giving 100 per cent of our support for the victory of Yilwatda/Botmang on Saturday,” he said.

The state NNPP Treasurer, Mr Luka Abok, said that they were in APC because it remained the party to beat in Plateau.

Abok described Yilwatda as a competent hand that could transformed the fortunes of Plateau and they needed to team up with him.

APC State Chairman Chief Rufus Bature who welcomed the defectors, said they were home in APC and would enjoy all privileges with other members.

Bature assured them that the party would not take their return to the APC for granted, pointing out that “every single person is important to the party.

“I assure you that we will work together so that Plateau will be better at the end of the day because of the quality material we have as governorship candidate.

“I am sure that you have seen those qualities that is why you have collapsed your structures to joined forces with the APC,’’ he added.

Lalong’s loss of senatorial contest, Plateau’s loss – APC’s spokesman

Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau, Mr Sylvanus Namang, says the defeat of Gov. Simon Lalong at the Feb. 25 National Assembly election is a huge loss to the state.

Namang told NAN on Saturday in Jos that defeat was not a personal loss of the governor.

He said if Lalong had been elected, he would have been a ranking member in the Senate having served as Speaker of the Plateau House Assembly for seven years.

“Those who did this to the governor will regret it because he has nothing to lose. With the emergence of Sen. Bola Tinubu as president, Lalong would have been considered first in considerations for Plateau.

“They have allowed certain sentiments to overwhelm them and that is not good for us as a state.

“Lalong was to go the National Assembly as ranking member and as ranking member could have been Senate president or Senate leader, but we have lost everything to sentiments.

“As far as we are concerned Gov. Lalong’s loss was not a personal loss, but a loss to the entire state,’’ Namang stressed.

He urged Plateau people to learn to move with the times in order to feature prominently in national politics where there are more gains.

He urged Plateau people to work for the progress of the state rather than picking on individuals.

He argued that it would take four years for a greenhorn to understand the workings of the National Assembly.

The Plateau governor contested for the Plateau South senatorial seat, but was defeated by retired AVM Napoleon Bali of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Bali scored 148,844 votes to Lalong’s 91,674 votes. Lalong is the first two-term governor of Plateau to fail to make it to the Senate.

  • Floods: Spike in snakebites, village head’s wife killed in Plateau

Floods: Spike in snakebites, village head’s wife killed in Plateau

More cases of snakebites have been reported across the country as humans and reptiles clash in dry lands while scurrying away from devastating floods.

Correspondents of NAN who visited areas prone to snakebites and the treatment centres, found a sharp rise in the cases with more deaths recorded as the floods had equally blocked access to treatment centres.

Among those killed is the wife of the village head of Magama in Langtang South Local Government of Plateau.

“Yes, I can confirm that there is a huge rise in snakebite cases; one of the victims is the wife of the village head of Magama.

“It is a scary situation. Snakes and humans are all running away from the floods and would usually clash in the dry lands in the struggle for space,” said Dr Nandul Durfa.

Durfa, Managing Director, Echitap Group, producers of Anti-Snake Venom (ASV), regretted that many lives were being lost to the menace.

The former Chief Medical Director of University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, also decried the shortage of ASV in the treatment centres.

Dr Abubakar Saidu Balla, Research Officer, Snakebite Research Hospital, Kaltungo in Gombe State, who also spoke with NAN, described the situation further.

“Because of the devastating floods, farmlands are wet and the snakes go to higher grounds where they mix with people.

“The situation is worse in Riverine areas around Borno, Adamawa, Kogi, Gombe and Bauchi.

“The floods force snakes to migrate or carry them along and deposit at the forests, homes or over river banks.

“The situation is worsened by the fact that victims cannot go to medical centres to get attention because the roads and bridges are either washed away or flooded.

“In the rural areas, the motorcycles usually help, but they cannot ride through the water now. Very often, victims reach treatment centres dead.”

Balla said that it had become dangerous to go to the farms, especially in Gombe.

“It is time to harvest groundnuts and maize, but going to the farm is very dangerous now because the snakebites are rampant.

“Farmers cannot leave their crops in the bush, so contact with the snakes is often inevitable,” he said.

Meanwhile, statistics from the hospital indicate that 1,900 victims of snake bites had been admitted since January.

According to Dr Suleiman Mohammed, its Chief Medical Officer, 34 of the victims died.

He said that most of the victims were herders and farmers that were mostly in the bush and usually at risk.

“When the rains get to the peak, we tend to have more patients because most of the snakes are dislodged from their holes and hiding places by the waters.

“So, when there is flood, it is linked to incidents of snakebites because the flood tends to move the snakes away from their usual habitat and they often go to areas where humans live.”

He said that six deaths had been recorded in October with the rest spread across January to September.

Reports from Lokoja in Kogi also indicated that snake attacks had become common with people living in fear.

“We live in fear of snakes, but we thank God that we have not recorded an incident of snakebite,” Usman Agbaje, a resident said.

He said that travellers plying the Ganaja-Lokoja flooded road had often encountered big snakes while in the boats.

Another resident, Joseph Benjamin, said that snakes had been sighted at the Army Barracks.

“A big one was seen in a room recently; we were lucky that it was killed before it could harm anyone.

“Not long ago, a little girl sighted a snake under a chair and quickly notified her parents who later killed it,” he said.
