Plateau crises: Over 1,801 lives lost in seven years — Report

No fewer than 1,801 persons were killed in various crises between 2010 and 2018 in Plateau State, the state Internally Displaced Persons Resettlement Committee has reported.

The committee in the report also said about 50,212 persons were displaced by the crises.

The report was presented to Governor Simon Lalong on Monday at the Government House, Jos by the chairman of the committee, Bala Danbaba, a retired air vice marshal of the Nigerian Air Force.

It identified 115 communities affected by the crises in Jos North, Jos South, Bassa, Riyom, Barkin Ladi and Bokkos local government areas.

According to Danbaba, the committee received 55 memoranda and visited 27 IDPs camps in the two months of its work.

At the end of the visits, the committee identified a total of 115 affected communities in the affected LGAs. It also ascertained a total of 59,008 persons in five LGAs of which out of this, a total of 1,801 persons were said to have lost their lives,” he said.

The only IDPs camp we did not visit was the one at Lere, in the Dorowa area of Barkin Ladi Local Government. We could not go there because of security reasons.”

The committee also visited all the affected communities for an on-the-spot assessment,” he added.

The multiethnic and multi-religious state in Nigeria’s North-central geopolitical zone has been wracked by violent conflicts for over a decade.

  • Buhari’s man drags Plateau APC to court, wants state congress nullified

Buhari’s man drags Plateau APC to court, wants state congress nullified

Mr Johnson Podar, National Director (Mobilisation), of the Buhari Campaign Organisation (BCO), has dragged the Plateau chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to court over alleged injustice during the party’s state congress.

In the case filed at the State High Court, Bukuru, Podar is seeking the nullification of the state congress that brought the current state executive council into office on the grounds that the said congress was not conducted according to APC’s stipulated guidelines.

Podar, from Fier Ward in Pankshin Local Government, claimed that he had signified interest in contesting for the state chairmanship seat, and paid the N100,000 fee for the nomination form.

According to him, after submitting the nomination form, he embarked on campaigns for the election, but was not allowed to contest for the seat.

“When we convened at the congress venue on May 19, 2018, the chairman of the state congress said that two persons were contesting for the post of state chairman, but that the person contesting against the incumbent chairman, Mr Dabang Letep, had been disqualified because his name is not in the APC register.

“Summarily, he proceeded to call Letep to stand before the congress as the sole contestant.

“I repeatedly raised my hand to observe a point of order but was not given audience to be heard on the matter,’’ he claimed in the affidavit.

Podar further claimed that he stood up and publicly protested his disqualification, while waving his APC membership card with registration number 11249, to confirm that he was a registered member of the party.

The plaintiff, who claimed that his protest fell on deaf ears, declared that there was no ground for his disqualification since his nomination form was endorsed by APC officials in his Fier Ward.

He said that he was forced to leave the congress venue when it became clear that the officials had made up their minds to sideline him.

Podar, therefore, urged the court to nullify the said election and declare the existence of the state working committee a nullity.

“If the court finds that the congress was not done rightly, it means that any action undertaken by the benefiting executive members since they were sworn in, including the primary elections they conducted, should be declared a nullity,’’ he averred.

When the case came up for hearing on Friday, Podar’s Counsel, Mr Samuel Abba, restated that his client was wrongfully disenfranchised.

Abba, however, explained that he had been served with a counter affidavit and a notice of preliminary objection challenging the jurisdiction of the court to hear the matter.

He quoted the defendants as saying, in the preliminary objection, that the matter was a “domestic affair’’ and the court had no right to delve into the affairs of a political party.

In his reaction to such claims, Abba said that if the court could pronounce on issues of husband and wife, which was more domestic, there was no reason to stop it from making pronouncement on political party issues that were even more public.

He said that he had filed a response to the objections, and that the defendant had sought for more time to respond to it, and had been obliged by the court.

In his argument, Counsel to the defendants, Mr Chindak Dakas, reaffirmed the position that the court had no jurisdiction to entertain the matter on the basis that it was purely an internal affair of the political party.

He also pointed out that INEC, which was a necessary party on all electoral matters, was not joined in the case.

Dakas said that the party needed time to respond to the plaintiff’s reaction to the preliminary objection.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Justice Ishaku Kunda, after listening to both sides, adjourned the case to Feb, 7, 2019, for further hearing.

  • Buhari condemns fresh violence in Plateau

President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the latest violence in Jos which led to the imposition of a curfew in the Plateau State capital.

In his reaction to the flare up, President Buhari said, “I am deeply worried about the seeming indifference to the sanctity of life by criminals whose hearts are hardened by evil.”

The president recalled that through the last three and a half years of the present administration in the state, the government had worked very hard with various communities and clearly demonstrated that a lasting peace can be achieved.

I know it is not an easy thing. It is a very difficult thing. But the resultant peace achieved by the people of Plateau State should not be squandered. Every citizen deserves stability and development. Peace has no alternative. It is my appeal to all the communities in the state capital, and the entire state as a whole to embrace peace. Where there are differences, dialogue should be used to bring about understanding. There is also the due process of the law. Differences cannot be resolved by abuses or by bullets.”

The president once again lamented that some politicians are promoting ethnic and religious prejudices for cheap popularity, despite the knowledge that such incitement could play into the hands of hate mongers.

He said his administration would continue to engage with stakeholders to address the root causes of this repeated violence in Plateau State and other parts of the country. He however warned that no responsible government would allow anarchy to replace law and order.
