Lalong, APC stakeholders beg Tinubu to fill Plateau ministerial slot

Sen. Simon Lalong (APC/Plateau South) and All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders in Plateau have urged President Bola Tinubu to fill the state vacant ministerial slot.

The stakeholders made the appeal during the APC critical stakeholders meeting in Jos on Monday.

Lalong, who is the APC leader in the state, said that since he resigned and moved to the Senate over seven months ago, Plateau has no representation in the Federal Executive Council.

The former governor said that they were all concerned that they have been without a minister for such a long time.

“It is not fair that Plateau has been without a minister for the past seven months.

“Whatever is the stumbling block, we want it removed so that we will have a minister because we are entitled to it constitutionally.

“I know the President is a democrat, and he listens to his people. I am sure, by the time he returns from his trip abroad, he will do something so that we will have a minister,” he said.

Lalong described the Plateau House of Assembly Speaker’s prolonged failure to inaugurate the remaining six APC members, who won their cases at Appeal Court as unconstitutional and unfortunate.

The senator, who was a two-term speaker of the assembly, said that he had never seen such an aberration in any state assembly across the country.

He urged the APC members to push for the inauguration of their colleagues.

According to him, anyone who refuses to do what is right, tomorrow what is right will not come to him or her.

Sen. Diket Plang (APC/Plateau Central) assured the stakeholders that National Assembly members on the platform of the party would be very productive.

Plang said that by so doing, they woo more members for the party.

He urged the party stakeholders and supporters to unite and win the forthcoming local government elections.

The Deputy Speaker, Plateau House of Assembly, Madaki Ajiji (APC/Jos East) solicited the support of members to enable the lawmakers succeed.

Ajiji promised that the APC lawmakers would continue to work for the interest of the state and the party.

NSCDC arrests 15 suspected illegal miners in Plateau

The Plateau Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested 15 suspected  illegal miners including minors.

ASC Ruth Rimvyok, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the command disclosed this to newsmen on Wednesday in Jos.

She explained that the suspects were arrested in Bukuru, Jos South Local Government Area (LGA) of the state

”NSCDC has the mandate to protect critical national assets and as part of the Executive Order 001 issued by the Plateau Government, we have noticed a rise in illegal mining being done around critical national assets.

”More disheartening is the fact that minors are being  used to carry out these illegal mining activities in the state.

”We have arrested 15 suspects with 13 of them who are minors.

”We want to warn those using these minors for this illegal act to desist henceforth or face the full wrath of the law,”she warned

Rimvyok called on parents to discourage their wards from engaging in the illegal activity, insisting that anyone caught would not be spared.

Speaking, Mr Ahmed Mohammed, the Federal Mines Officer in charge of the North-Central Zone, said that the arrest was in collaboration with his office.

Mohammed, who decried the spate of illegal mining in homes, said that mining operations were regulated by the Federal Government.

”We now have an unfortunate trend in Jos; people are mining inside their buildings, in some cases, even in their bedrooms.

”People should know that mining is a regulated business under the Nigeria’s Minerals and Mining Act 2007.

”Nobody has the right to conduct mining anywhere without a licence; so people should obtain the right licenses to mine in areas that are allowed.

”We will not condone illegal mining in any part of the state and so we urge communities to embrace the opening provided by the government and do mining in a legal way,”he warned.

The officer said that owners of the properties who allowed illegal mining operations on their facilities would be arrested.

The government on Sunday, imposed the 24-hour curfew on the Jos-Bukuru axis, following looting of public and private assets by some hoodlums in Jos North Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

  • Gov Muftwang forges alliance with NIPC to enhance agricultural entrepreneurs in Plateau

Gov Muftwang forges alliance with NIPC to enhance agricultural entrepreneurs in Plateau

During his election campaigns Governor Caleb Mutfwang had promised to among other things ensure a creative, resourceful, and sustainable approach to agriculture, tourism, solid minerals development in Plateau State.

Since his advent and despite security challenges the governor has steadfastly been moving towards actualising his promise with the aim of restoring the state’s leading position as a state overflowing with agricultural entrepreneurs.

Apart from the conventional African foods, the State is also the home of exotic fruits and flowers which if properly harnessed, will create jobs and wealth, improving the revenue.

It was in part towards that direction that Governor Mutfwang whose administration is creating a conducive environment for lawful businesses to thrive, recently met with the Chief Executive Officer, CEO of Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission, NIPC, Aisha Rimi to discuss issues that would unlock the economic potential of the State.

He ensured that the strategic engagement with the NIPC focused on the State’s rich potential in agriculture, mining, ecotourism, energy, and other sectors, which offer abundant opportunities across the value chain.

Governor Mutfwang expressed the State’s readiness to build relationships with reputable global organizations and foster an enabling environment for robust Public-Private Partnerships to drive sustainable development.

He pointed out the importance of good road networks to economic development and called for the urgent rehabilitation of roads to enhance business interconnectivity among States.

The Governor also hinted that good roads would impact the tourism potential of the State saying that Plateau is home to Africa’s second-largest urban wildlife park, and his administration is working to significantly boost the State’s tourism potential to serve as a key driver of economic growth and development.

However, Ms Rimi, seeing the Governor’s zeal to reposition the State, gave the NIPC’s commitment to working with the Plateau State Government to unlock opportunities crucial for driving and sustaining economic growth in the State and beyond.

Reacting to the said engagement, the Plateau State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Musa Ashoms added, “Plateau State is open for businesses, you must give them a template and atmosphere that is friendly.

“This governor has proven to have that mindset and has tuned Plateau State on that pedestrian. That is why investors from everywhere come into the State to explore business opportunities.

“Recently, the team from the African Development Bank inspected the special agricultural processing zone. We’ve had the US Acting Ambassador come to Plateau State. We’ve had the Minister of Trade from Germany come. We’ve had investors from all over the world. And even those at home, come to explore the business opportunities on the Plateau.

“The meeting with NIPC is a vista that has been opened for others to know there are business opportunities on the Plateau. Not long ago, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority was in Jos to see the Yakubu Gowon Airport, to see how to take it to the international standard or in the interim, make it a cargo airport where goods can leave Jos in the morning and they are in different parts of the country.”

Ashoms maintained, “The State Ministry of Transport is looking at opening a new route from Jos to Port Harcourt. Let it not just be the Abuja, and Lagos routes only. We’re also looking at opening one route to the northwest and another to the northeast. That is Jos-Kano, Jos-Maiduguri so that we explore new business opportunities.

“The atmosphere that we have right now is conducive for investments and we’re open to the Build, Operate and Transfer, BOT basis. We can also engage people in PPP public-private partnerships so that the State will grow.

“We are a pro-people government. Once these investments come to Plateau State, our people will be employed, the private sector will grow tremendously. So as the government these are the things we’re doing to make sure that we opened we open up Plateau State to new businesses, to new investments, to new ideas.”

  • Plateau govt. shuts down Saints Academy School after collapse

Plateau govt. shuts down Saints Academy School after collapse

Gov. Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau has shut down The Saints Academy School, Jos, whose block of classrooms collapsed on Friday, killing scores and leaving many others injured.

A visibly angry Mutfwang cited crass negligence by its owners as reason for the shut-down order.

NAN reports that 22 persons were confirmed dead with about 145 injured when the one-storey building collapsed on the students who were writing their examinations.

Mutfwang, who inspected the cite where the incident occurred, and visited some  casualties on Saturday, said the disaster would have been avoided if the school owners had complied with building laws.

“It’s unfortunate that this has happened but, of course, we cannot allow the school to function. The school is hereby closed down immediately; we cannot take any further chances.

“We need to send this message, particularly to owners of private schools, that the drive for profit must not overshadow the safety of lives.

“We are going to carry out a technical audit of all the schools, including public schools; we are going to test structural integrity to ensure that human beings can inhabit buildings there.

“We are going to set up a very high-powered committee to investigate this incident. We are going to bring in building professionals to investigate this and anyone found culpable will certainly face the wrath of the law,” he said

While reiterating the recently established Executive Order 003, Mutfwang emphasised the need to conform to building laws so as to restore sanity and order to buildings and constructions within the metropolis.

“We cannot afford this situation any longer, that is why we signed the Executive Order 003; the goal is to be able to bring order and sanity into the building sector.

“When we insisted that some buildings be demolished, it wasn’t because we are wicked. We are concerned about the safety of lives.

“When we see buildings on water lines, or in marshy places, we have no option than to bring them down.

“People think that we are wicked, but we are going to go the extra mile now and make sure that violators are also prosecuted.

“We will not just bring down the buildings at government costs, we will make sure that violators pay the cost of such demolitions.

“It is time we told ourselves the truth; everybody must be responsible for human lives. We cannot afford this kind of mishap again,” he said.

Mr Hart Bankat, General Manager of the Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB), while speaking on the possible reasons for the collapse, said he suspected poor building materials.

“Although investigations are ongoing, poor building materials were among reasons for the collapse.

“We are going to investigate this thoroughly, but even before then, it is obvious from the rubbles on ground that very very poor materials were used here.

“Insufficient cement mix, no gravels, you can see that the spacing from the rods and the slabs are falling down, all these show that the building wasnt properly done.

“Those are things that will be properly investigated, but we are calling on members of the public to report such things so that such losses can be averted,” he said.

Earlier, Mr Daramola Akindele, Principal of the school, who responded to the governor’s enquiries, said he did not see any sign that the building could collapse.

“I inspect the school compound daily. The owner of the school is late, but it is being managed by her husband, Mr Marius Onigwe, who is indisposed now.

“Being the administrative head of the school, I carry out a general inspection of the compound everyday. It was actually built before I came. But I didn’t imagine that something like this could happen. There was no sign whatsoever.”

NAN reports that the governor also visited some of the hospitals into which victims of the collapsed structure were admitted.

He also paid condolence visits to parents of the deceased students.

  • How Gov Mutfwang is pursuing green revolution in Plateau to curb hunger

How Gov Mutfwang is pursuing green revolution in Plateau to curb hunger

Beyond the signature white and green colours associated with the State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, the State is aggressively pursuing peace and agriculture to drive its economy.

The Governor has consistently stressed the urgent need to secure the land and the people saying, “The Time is Now to secure the future of the people and to make a deliberate effort to develop the land for the people, by the people, and with the people.”

To make good his promises, the Governor in collaboration with other critical stakeholders is working to maintain relative peace in the State. He has directed a large-scale mechanized cultivation of thousands of hectares of land to boost food security, empower the people, and secure the land.

Recall that many communities in the State have been deserted due to senseless attacks by armed men and last year, the Governor directed that 900 hectares of land be cultivated to ensure the land doesn’t lay fallow.

This year, apart from designating the State into three crop zones for the cultivation of crops of comparative advantage on 4,000 hectares of land in each zone, the State-owned Agriculture Services Training Centre and Marketing Limited, ASTC has commenced the cultivation of 6,000 hectares of land in the displaced communities to ensure their source of livelihood is restored.

Speaking on his efforts to drive the State’s economy, the Governor said, “We have been tackling the security challenges but after security, we have to survive. In addressing the challenges of poverty, we looked at building the Plateau economy that is sustainable beyond oil revenue using some critical economic drivers like agriculture which is natural to us.

“Food production in the State has dropped because of the challenges, we had earlier mobilized resources and got the ASTC to cultivate 900 hectares of land for the displaced communities but it was late, they could not plant much, only soybeans.

“This year, we have divided the State into three agricultural zones, the Southern belt will focus on the local governments that have the advantage in rice, palm oil, and yam production. We are working at achieving international standards in food production.

“In the Central belt, there is a strategic advantage in Irish potatoes and maize production. We will aggressively promote the marketing of acha (fonio).

“The Northern zone primarily produces fruits and vegetables, coffee, flowers, and wheat, at least 4,000 hectares of land will be cultivated in each zone to boost food production. We must not lose our contribution to the nation’s food basket.

“We are also looking at reducing post-harvest losses that is why we set up the Plateau Commodities Market company to improve the marketing opportunities available to farmers.”
6,000 Hectares cultivated in Displaced Communities

To assist the displaced persons in earning a living, the Governor directed an extensive mechanized farming intervention for 6,000 hectares of land across the communities using the ASTC.

Flagging off the exercise on Monday in the Mangu Local Government, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Samson Bugama, reiterated the Governor’s concern about the displaced persons and efforts being intensified to return them home.

His words: “Today marks the beginning of a comprehensive engagement in the field. The strategy is to provide mechanization services to displaced communities and help them return to their livelihoods.

“The governor has commissioned the mechanization service intervention. We are targeting 6,000 hectares as resources are available and would do the minimum of 3,000 hectares. We will provide seeds to bring a bumper harvest and provide food.

“The intervention focuses primarily on displaced communities. However, the scope may extend to other areas as resources allow. Our major goal is to resettle displaced communities back into their farming activities.

“Governor Mutfwang is deeply concerned about the hunger problem, and this intervention is a deliberate effort to boost food production and reduce prices.”
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of ASTC Susan Bentu explained that the four-week cultivation period would cover areas in the three Zones of the State, with a focus on maize, potatoes, and rice, depending on the zone.

She noted, “ASTC is a household name, we are dedicated to assisting farmers, whether in rain-fed or dry seasons. This intervention programme which starts from crop cultivation to harvest is free, the State government covers all the costs.
“The cultivation will last for about four weeks, the communities in the Northern Zone are Jol, Wereng, Kwi, Rim, Bachit, Sho, Vom-Chol, some parts of Jos East, and the BARC Farms.
“The Central Zone will cover; Tam, Aloghom, Vodni Pushit, Changal, Kombili, Washna, Larkas, Longkat Irrigation, Chip, Mabel, Butura, Manguna, and Mbar communities. The Southern Zone will include Wase River, Shendam Dam, Jenta Yelwa, Shimangkar, Pandam, Sabon Gida, Namu, and Gidan Adamu.
“Our vision is to raise self-sufficient farmers, financially stable and empowered, contributing to the State’s food security and economic stability.”
She stressed, “The intervention in mechanized farming for farmers, is principally in displaced areas as well as for those in large clusters.
“There is a youth empowerment programme that has also been approved and we will be cultivating for the youths at BARC farms. We will go to the three Senatorial zones on different days.
“It is an intensive programme and we are set to change the narrative where agriculture is a concern in the State. For each zone, we will concentrate on their areas of strength, the zones have been designated into crop zones.
“The outcome of the intervention last year was awesome, the communities are calling for more, in the first phase, we had 900 hectares, this time, we have more than tripled the scope of operation.
“The ASTC has a fleet of 300 tractors with a big capacity, 165 horsepower, the personnel are motivated, ready and willing to deliver.”
Meanwhile, to ensure the safety of the crops, local self-help and the service of the Agro-Rangers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC have been mobilized for early warning signals as Bugama assured that the government would not allow “the wastage of government investment in the communities.”

  • Why I moved for creation of additional state constituencies – Plateau lawmaker

Why I moved for creation of additional state constituencies – Plateau lawmaker

Mr Nanbol Daniel (LP-Langtang North Central), Member, Plateau State House of Assembly, has explained why he moved the motion for creation of additional state constituencies in the assembly.

Daniel said on Sunday in Jos, that the people of the state would have better representation if more constituencies were created out of the current 24.

The lawmaker said that the creation would further help in meeting the current legislative demands of Plateau.

He said the constituencies should be reviewed from 24 to 40 members, to reflect equity in the number of federal constituencies in Plateau.

Daniel stated that since the inception of the current democratic dispensation in 1999, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), had not reviewed the number of constituencies in the state.

According to him, it is a constitutional duty of INEC to do a periodic review of constituencies, noting that Plateau has been long overdue in view of its growing population.

The lawmaker stated that Section 91 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) provided that a State House of Assembly shall consist of three or four times the number of seats that it has in the House of Representatives.

“It is provided that a House of Assembly of a state shall consist of not less than 24 and not more than 40 members.

“Section 112 of the Nigerian Constitution also provides that the INEC shall divide every state of the federation into such number of state constituencies as is equal to three or four times the number of federal constituencies within that state.

“More so, Section 114 provides that INEC shall review the division of every state into constituencies at intervals of not less than ten years.

“And may alter such constituencies in accordance with the provisions of Section 114 to such extent as it may consider desirable in the light of the review,” he explained.

Daniel therefore, urged the state’s lawmakers, National Assembly members, and Plateau Government, to start and sustain the processes for the upward review and creation of additional state constituencies.
