NCC warns against apps by Mobile Apps Group in Google Play Store

Following the constant introduction of malicious apps into Google Play Store, the Nigerian Communications Commission’s Computer Security Incident Response Team (NCC-CSIRT) has advised against the installation of apps from the offending publisher, the ‘Mobile Apps Group’, whose products were discovered to contain Trojans and adware that are harmful to users and their privacy.

NCC-CSIRT’s advisory on the incident disclosed that “The Nigeria Computer Emergency Response Team (ngCERT) has continued to observe and monitor the constant introduction of malicious mobile applications into Google Play Store.

“Mobile apps Group has a history of distributing malware-infected apps through the Google Play store, and the current batch of apps has already been downloaded over a million times” it said.

It listed this group’s malicious apps as the Bluetooth Auto Connect; Bluetooth App Sender; Driver: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB; and Mobile transfer: smart switch.

According to the advisory, “The apps will delay the display of ads for up to three days after installation to avoid detection. However, once this period has passed, the user is bombarded with advertisements and is directed to malicious phishing websites in the Chrome browser. While the device is idle, the malicious app can open Chrome tabs in the background. Some of the sites it opens may appear to be harmless, but they are pay-per-click pages that generate revenue for the developers when clicked on.”

Consequences of installing the malicious apps include the user being bombarded with advertisements, which will degrade the user experience; theft of sensitive user data; clicking on the ads resulting in the stealth download or installation of additional malware, as well as the user privacy and data being jeopardized.

These unpleasant consequences are avoidable when users refrain from downloading apps developed by Mobile apps Group and ensure to read app reviews before installing any app. Other proffered solutions are for users that may have installed any of the identified malicious apps to immediately uninstall them and to install up-to-date anti-malware solution to detect and remove malware.

NCC-CSIRT rated the malicious activities of the offending apps as high in probability and potential to do damage.

The CSIRT is the telecom sector’s cyber security incidence centre set up by the NCC to focus on incidents in the telecom sector and as they may affect telecom consumers and citizens at large.

The CSIRT also works collaboratively with ngCERT, established by the Federal Government to reduce the volume of future computer risk incidents by preparing, protecting, and securing Nigerian cyberspace to forestall attacks, and problems or related events.

BREAKING: eNaira app ‘disappears’ from Google Play Store

The eNaira app recently launched by President Muhammadu Buhari has ‘disappeared’ from the Google Play Store, checks have shown.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the eNaira app was probably removed from the Play Store by Google due to the numerous complaints and poor performance ratings the app has received since launch.

Users had earlier rated the application low and made several complaints on the eNaira app on the Google Play Store.

The central bank digital currency, called eNaira, was launched on Monday and 36 hours after the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) published on the Play Store, it has been unpublished.

To access the eNaira, users have to download the ‘speed wallet’, which allows users to make quick and easy transactions. It is the digital storage that holds the eNaira and is held and managed on a distributed ledger.

However, at the time of filing this report, the eNaira Merchant App, which has considerable positive comments is still available for download.

Twenty-four hours after the eNaira App was published over 100, 000 users had downloaded it.

Users who had downloaded the application said that they have not been asked to update the 8.76 megabytes application.

The eNaira speed wallet had a rating of 2.0 of the obtainable 5.0 from 2,150 reviews on Play Store as of 5:45pm on Monday as users complained of glitches.

It is unclear if the App was unpublished by Google because of the poor rating and negative reviews or the CBN. No words from the CBN on the matter yet.

Google deletes Nigerian social media app from Play Store

Internet giants, Google has deleted from its Play Store Nigerian social media app known as Crowwe.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the Crowwe social media app, which imitates Twitter, is owned by Nigeria’s Adamu Garba.

The app had received horrible reviews from Nigerians after Garba supported the suspension of Twitter use in Nigeria.

Garba had, following the suspension, encouraged Nigerians to support his indigenous social media app by downloading it from the Play Store.

Not only did the app receive horrible reviews, Nigerians also reported that Crowwe’s terms and conditions were plagiarised word for word from another app, Spotify.

The discovery was also verified by Dubawa, a fact-checking platform, to be true.

“Check the Crowwe app’s terms and conditions. It’s the SAME thing as Spotify. They didn’t even bother editing. Like if you click on the hyperlink it redirects you to Spotify theft. What sort of pangolo app is that?” a Twitter user wrote, tagging Spotify.

Right now, Garba’s Crowwe app, which has been described as an instant messaging and financial transaction app that comes with a digital wallet that helps to transfer and receive money while chatting, is no longer available on the Google Play Store.

Google removes from the Play Store applications that are perceived to have violated its policy.

“Once your app is removed, the published version of your app won’t be available on Google Play until a compliant update is submitted.

“Until a policy violation has been fixed, don’t republish a removed app,” Google Play Store policy reads.

Internet search giant, Google has said the coast is now clear for all its users to start enjoying it’s services at 100% again.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports millions of users who rely on Google for efficiency suffered apprehension on Monday as a number of Google’s apps suffered a rare outage.

The apps were knocked offline worldwide and the reason for the outage was yet to be ascertained but Google has said the coast is now clear.

“We’re all clear folks! Thanks for staying with us,” @GoogleWorkspace tweeted some hours after the outage.

The brief outage had a significant impact on Google’s millions of users, many of whom rely on Google services for efficiency.

Gmail, YouTube, Play Store, Analytics, and Google Docs were all affected. Other Google’s products such as Drive, Google Ads, Google Search Console, merchant ads were also affected, according to users’ experience across the globe.

At the time of filing this report, TNG can confirm Google apps affected are showing signs of response, indicating they are gradually coming back online.

Outages like this are very rare with Google. Although, a similar issue occurred in June 2019 but affected only Google users in the United States.

In that instance, the reason for the outage was a change to server settings that was supposed to be applied to a few machines in a specific region – but was accidentally applied to many more.

Why you must delete these apps from your phone right now

Google between July and September removed a number of apps that were infected with dangerous malware from the Play Store.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the dangerous malware is known as the Joker malware that has been infecting apps on the Play Store for the past several months.

The malware is not a new one, but recently many app developers have also given information about it, and Google removed information about these apps from the Play Store.

The Joker malware is a malicious bot that has been categorized as fleeceware. The main function of this malware is to make the user click and subscribe to paid premium services via SMS.

Without any knowledge, users subscribe to this service and fall prey to fraud. The Joker does its job with very little coding and leaves very few marks behind, which makes it difficult to identify.

Joker-infected 11 apps were first removed from the Play Store in July. After this, 6 more apps were removed in early September. Recently 17 more apps were infected with this malware and now they have been removed from the App Store.

The apps infected by the malware on Google Play Store are:
