REVEALED: Liverpool players in agreement over Klopp successor

Liverpool’s players are keen to see Pep Lijnders succeed Jurgen Klopp as manager.

The No2 will follow Klopp out of the club at the end of the season.

But pundit Alan Brazil told talkSPORT: “I am told the players wouldn’t mind the number two, Pep taking over.”

Former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders added: “I heard that as well. At least Lijnders knows what’s going on there.

“It’s difficult, who do you give the job to? That club is that big.”

Lijnders has been with the Reds since 2014, though had a year away in charge of NEC Nijemegen.

  • Nigerian players should consider playing in Saudi over Europe – Amunike

Nigerian players should consider playing in Saudi over Europe – Amunike

Nigeria assistant head coach Emmanuel Amunike has advised Nigerian players to consider the Saudi league over European clubs.

The Saudi league has already become a thorn in Europe’s top divisions as clubs like Al Nassr, Al Hilal, and Al Ittihad managed to convince some of the world’s best players to leave for astronomical money last summer.

And Amunike doesn’t agree with all the criticism and scrutiny towards the Saudi Pro League in Europe.

Speaking about the growth of the Saudi league, former Barcelona attacker Amunike told Tribal Football: “Saudi football has changed a lot and I think the Saudi people deserve to be respected and they have the right to change the narrative of football over there.

“I disagree with the idea that Saudi’s can come to Europe and buy European clubs, but they can’t invest in their country to change the narrative of their football.”

Nobody has benefited more from Saudi’s money than Newcastle United who were brought by Saudi’s sovereign wealth fund the PIF in 2021. There is a point to be made that the Premier League sanctioned that takeover so they can’t complain about Saudi clubs coming in for their stars to help grow their own league.

Amunike continues to emphasise his support for the Saudi league by admitting that he wouldn’t discourage players in Nigeria considering playing in Saudi over Europe.

He said: “If a player comes to me to ask me about going there {Saudi Arabia} I would say to them ‘why not if it is the right project for you’”.

There is every chance Saudi’s unlimited wealth will come knocking on Europe’s door again this January transfer window, but it is also possible that before long they will start looking to convince talents from around the world to join their ever growing league.

The striker was called out by skipper Giovanni di Lorenzo on Monday after his strop during their 0-0 draw with Bologna after he was substituted by coach Rudi Garcia.

And as they assembled at the team hotel for tonight’s game, Osimhen was filmed making his entrance.

Osimhen introduced himself and was welcomed by the team manager Giuseppe Santoro, with whom there was a handshake, and by some teammates. But some were ‘snubbed’ by the Nigerian, who immediately went inside the lobby and did not say hello specifically to Diego Demme, who had raised his hand asking for a high five.

Narrow escape as plane conveying Arsenal players burst into flames on runway

It was a narrow escape as plane carrying the Arsenal women’s team back to London after a Champions League match, burst into flames as it was about to take off, forcing the players and staff to remain in Germany.

Photos show flames shooting from an engine on the Boeing 737 on the runway at Braunschweig Wolfsburg Airport in Germany.

The 7.30pm Sunday, April 23 flight was due to take off just a few hours after Arsenal secured a 2-2 draw against VfL Wolfsburg in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final.

The plane made a loud bang just before it was about to take off on April 23, according to reports.

Horrified pilots saw the blaze and quickly pulled the plane up on the tarmac to evacuate all the passengers.

An airport spokesman told German newspaper BILD a bird strike on the engine had caused the fire.

The airport official added that nobody was hurt during the incident.

The team and Arsenal staff were put up in a nearby hotel. They were then flown back to London on Monday on another plane.

  • EPL to allow players to break fast mid-game during Ramadan

EPL to allow players to break fast mid-game during Ramadan

Refereeing bodies in England have told Premier League and English Football League match officials to pause play so that players can break their fast during the holy period of Ramadan.

Match officials have been issued guidance so players can break their fast by taking on liquids, energy gels or supplements on the touchline during a pause in play.

Ramadan begins on Wednesday and lasts a month.

Referees have also been encouraged to identify players who are fasting prior to kick-off and agree an estimated time for the pause in play.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah, Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante and Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez are among players who are expected to abstain from eating and drinking during daylight hours.

In 2021, a match between Leicester City and Crystal Palace was halted by referee Graham Scott after half an hour so Wesley Fofana and Cheikhou Kouyate could break their fast after sunset.
