Pochettino reportedly accepts to coach US national team

Mauricio Pochettino has agreed to become the new United States coach with the responsibility of leading the team into the 2026 World Cup.

Pochettino, 52, has been out of work since leaving Chelsea by mutual consent earlier this summer after just one season in charge at Stamford Bridge.

A source told ESPN that the former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain coach agreed to succeed Gregg Berhalter as USMNT head coach following lengthy discussions with Matt Crocker, the USSF technical director.

Crocker, who previously worked with Premier League team Southampton and the English Football Association, had been charged with recruiting a world-class coach to ensure the USMNT goes into the 2026 World Cup — the U.S. are joint hosts with Canada and Mexico — as a competitive nation, capable of running into the latter stages of the competition.

Efforts to recruit Jürgen Klopp following his summer exit from Liverpool failed to get off the ground, but Pochettino agreeing to take on the role is a major coup for the USSF.

A separate source told ESPN that Pochettino’s situation with Chelsea remains unresolved. He is owed money by the Premier League club and until a resolution is found he cannot sign a contract to take over the USMNT.

Pochettino is expected to be installed in time to take charge of the USMNT game against Canada in Kansas City, Kansas, on Sept. 7.

Pochettino would be able to keep a European base and not move to the U.S. full time, a source told ESPN, as he could watch bulk of the national team players in major European leagues.

Sources told ESPN that Pochettino had been under consideration as a possible candidate to replace Gareth Southgate as England manager.

I’m open to listen to offers – Pochettino

Sacked Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino says he’s ready for an instant return.

Pochettino took part in Sunday’s Soccer Aid charity game at Stamford Bridge.

Afterwards, he told talkSPORT: “I have full energy and I think we finished really well.

“Now we just wait and see what happens. In football you never know, things can happen – today, nothing, but tomorrow can appear and any opportunity, we are open to listen.”

It has been claimed Pochettino spoke with Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe last week.

Why I loved Jackson’s goal celebration – Pochettino

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino is delighted with the form of Nicolas Jackson.

The striker has nine goals in the past 18 games for the Blues.

Pochettino said: “I think Nico has the potential to be a very, very good striker, a fantastic striker. It is only about patience and time.

“He got criticism from the beginning because he was always compared with Didier Drogba after he had been here a few years. And when I talk about the history of the club, it is the same… we are in the process of building a team to match the history of Chelsea.

“To judge and be so radical with your opinions, be careful because it is about seeing what is going on and what we are doing here.

“With Nico, through confidence and through working really hard, he is changing opinions.

“I accept, if you are seeing things that you do not like then you can describe it but because football is so dynamic and can change, I am so happy that people are now seeing Nico in the way we saw him [earlier in the season].”

Pochettino was happy seeing Jackson celebrate with the away fans in victory at Nottingham Forest.

He said: “I am so happy about that [celebration] because I enjoy it when the fans enjoy it with the players. For me, it is more [important] than the relationship with the coach.

“We need to create things where the fans really love the players because they are the principal actors.

“With Nico, we backed him and we gave everything to be calm and work hard because we knew the capacity and quality he has and because he has the time to show it.

“We are so happy and so proud this happened.”

Chelsea prepared to axe Mauricio Pochettino

Premier League cllub Chelsea are thinking about making a managerial change in the off-season.

The Blues are likely to finish outside of the European places this term.

While they did reach a Carabao Cup final and FA Cup semi final, their season has been a failure.

Per The Mail, the Blues will seriously consider sacking Mauricio Pochettino and hiring a new manager in the summer.

Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim is a candidate, while a return for Thomas Tuchel is possible.

Many fans and pundits do believe that Pochettino should get more time to implement his ideas on a very young squad.

Cole Palmer very grateful to Man City – Pochettino

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino believes there is much more to come from Cole Palmer.

The attacking midfielder is having an outstanding season since joining the club from Manchester City.

Palmer is top of the goalscoring and assists charts for the club this term.

Pochettino stated in a press conference on how he can improve further: “To absorb the pressure of playing in the Premier League consistently. We were talking to the coaching staff, it’s about the demand in his private life.

“Maybe he needs to pay attention in different things than before he didn’t pay attention. We need to be careful. We have experience of course to manage this kind of thing with a young kid to become a bigger star.”

As they prepare to face Manchester City in the FA Cup semi final, Pochettino added: “He already played twice [vs Man City]. He is very grateful with Man City, with Pep Guardiola, he always talks very highly about them. He’s not this type of player to have something inside.

“He understood perfectly that maybe for different reasons he wanted to prove himself at another club. Thank you to Manchester City for giving the opportunity for him to move to another club.”

On Palmer’s quality, he finished: “That is a consequence of his shots and his teammates who pass him the ball in the right moment.

“Honestly, always we never judged the players when we signed the players but it is true he is performing in a very good way. His first consistent season playing, also we need to be careful because he is young and he is growing and level up in different areas, his game.”

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino confirmed that Cole Palmer is fit and healthy.

The attacking midfielder was subbed off when they were 2-1 up against Sheffield United in the Premier League on Sunday.

However, the Blues ended up conceding a late goal and drew 2-2 against the bottom team in the league.

Asked about subbing Palmer due to injury, Pochettino responded: “No, no, no. I think he was tired.

“My feeling was he was tired. 2-1 for us, Carney is another No.10 who can play there and do the job.

“Yes, I think we are happy with him. We need to protect him. He got a knock against Manchester United and was a little bit more tired than normal, but we wanted to protect him after scoring the second goal.

“Trying to avoid a problem for the future.”

  • Connection with Chelsea fans will improve – Pochettino

Connection with Chelsea fans will improve – Pochettino

Chelsea’s incredible win over Manchester United may help their manager connect with supporters.

That is the view of the man himself, Mauricio Pochettino, as he spoke in the aftermath of the dramatic contest.

The Blues were 3-2 down to United in added time, but won 4-3 after two late Cole Palmer goals.

“The fans are so important in football,” Pochettino said to reporters.

“I am so happy, not only for the three points or because our performance was better than Manchester United, but because this was my first time here at Stamford Bridge that I started to feel a connection with the fans.

“That will be really helpful for us until the end of the season. That, for me, should be what’s really important.”

  • Pochettino on Newcastle win: This is a different Chelsea

Pochettino on Newcastle win: This is a different Chelsea

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino admits his team were under pressure on Monday night.

The Blues came away with a battling 3-2 win against Newcastle United in the Premier League.

While the result still keeps them in 11th place, Pochettino knows they can use it as a springboard to move up the table before the season concludes.

Post-game, he stated: “I think we need to understand we are in Chelsea and of course when you are in a project that is completely different, some people can be confused. When people don’t want to listen, it is difficult, but we are trying to explain that we are in a different Chelsea, building something different and of course it is going to be tough.

“It’s about believing, even when it is in a tough situation, a tough circumstance, like when we were playing in the final for 120 minutes, after three days we play in the FA Cup and then against Brentford. In six days we play three very tough games and with all of the circumstances, nearly with the same team and the players were really tired.

“If that means we are a disaster, okay, but the most important thing is that it is not affecting us, it is not affecting the team. The team knew what they needed to do and we kept believing. I think win the game today, it is important for us and our fans to be a little bit more calm. If we don’t win next game then it is going to be again a problem, but that is Chelsea and the most important thing is to try and translate the reality.

“I don’t want again to explain the situation but some problems don’t exist. The problem is that the team needs to be more mature, the team needs to be more together. Today the defensive line played together for the first time – Malo Gusto, Axel Disasi, Trevoh Chalobah and Marc Cucurella. They were good, yes, but we made some mistakes because of this situation that they didn’t play together before.

“But that is not an excuse. That is a fact, that is a reality. The most important thing is to keep moving because we are not going to give up, be strong, and we all agree the fans are right to complain, of course, but we have no right to give up and say we don’t believe. No, no, no, it’s to show the character and to live with this type of situation and keep moving.

“Today was great to show the players fighting, performing, okay not maybe great, but yes of course caring about the team and in the end beating a team that last season was fighting for the Premier League, the top four and fighting in the Champions League. And this season have good players, it’s not easy, Newcastle are a very good team. Good credit to the team and to everyone.”

  • Boo me, not Chelsea players – Pochettino tells fans

Boo me, not Chelsea players – Pochettino tells fans

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has told fans if they must boo, then boo him and not the players.

Chelsea were again barracked by the away support during Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Brentford.

Asked about a message for frustrated fans, Pochettino said: “Yes, and if they want to listen, perfect. If not, what can I do? They’ll keep booing. I’m giving my best to this team.

“But we cannot blame the fans. My message is: Okay, they need to show their frustration – through who? I prefer to me rather than to the team. I prefer that, I am strong. I am sure that in time we will change the perception.

“I don’t want the fans trying to blame the players. Players need to feel backed by the fans and, to be honest, I prefer that I get the blame and let the players be free on the pitch. I don’t care. I am strong, I am 52 now.

“The players deserve credit and support from our fans. If someone needs to get the blame, that is no problem. That is why I am the coach.”

He added: “I think we need to put it in context. Even if sometimes people do not listen, it is our third game in six days, with Leeds and Brentford always having the advantage of a few days more to prepare for the game against us. When you are a little bit short in the squad like we are with some players recovering, it’s always difficult.

“We are going to fight for our place and for our position.”

Chelsea are ready to move on from their head coach in the coming weeks or months.
