Carabao Cup: Chelsea players must feel pain – Pochettino

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino says his players “must feel the pain” of their Carabao Cup final defeat.

Chelsea had enough chances to win, but fell 1-0 to Liverpool in extra-time.

Pochettino said: “We created four, five, six big chances and we didn’t score. In a game like today and in a final to score first, it is a big advantage.

“We didn’t score and that is a bit of a problem. We conceded in the last minute and it is difficult to react.

“They [the players] are professional, they need to feel the pain. We played for a trophy we didn’t get. They need to feel the pain like us.

“The players feel the disappointment because we were so close to winning the game after 90 minutes.

“We need to take positive things, need to push, use this type of game to learn and be better.

“I think we really competed if you don’t score with chances we had it’s difficult to win the final.

“That is why, we lost final we need to be clinical in front of goal and we congratulate Liverpool and keep going.

“The way you lose is so painful but now we need to keep going keep moving. They scored and we didn’t score.”

We’re still worrying about Nkunku – Pochettino

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino admitted to having concerns about Christopher Nkunku.

The French attacking midfielder is working to rebuild his fitness after many months out with injury.

Nkunku was not able to train this week after suffering an injury in a 3-2 win against Luton Town recently.

“We are still worrying about the situation of Nkunku,” Pochettino admitted on Friday in his latest press conference.

“Now I think we are 10 days he cannot train. We are assessing. A little bit worried as we want him back as soon as possible.

“I remember my first conference after he suffered a small issue. Now I think it’s nearly 10 days he has not trained – in between eight and 10. After six months, we were waiting for him.

“He was so close to again feel(ing) comfortable. I am of course disappointed with that. We want him as soon as possible to be involved again.”

Chelsea board make fresh Pochettino decision

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino does not need to fear the sack at present.

The Stamford Bridge club are languishing in midtable in the Premier League this term.

A 1-0 Carabao Cup semi-final first leg loss to Middlesbrough has increased talk about Pochettino’s future.

However, The Telegraph states that Pochettino is not currently at risk of losing his job.

Chelsea want him to see out the season, and they believe improvements can arrive.

If the club can qualify for any European competition, even through a domestic cup, the season will be considered a success.

Where I see Nkunku playing for Chelsea – Pochettino

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino is pondering whether to start Christopher Nkunku today against Crystal Palace.

Nkunku played and scored in defeat at Newcastle United on the weekend. He’s now banked an hour in two appearances.

Pochettino said: “At the moment he is coming back from injury his best position is more like a 10 or a 9, more than the left or right side like a winger. To cope with the demands of the Premier League and what the team needs, it’s better in these positions.

“He is now starting to understand the Premier League, that teams are very aggressive and the football is very different to other countries.

“It’s good for him, more minutes. He will adapt little by little, but scoring will help him adapt quicker.”

  • Why I substituted Fernandez against Newcastle – Pochettino explains

Why I substituted Fernandez against Newcastle – Pochettino explains

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino explained his substitution of midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

The Blues experienced a nervy game on Tuesday against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup.

Before the dramatic closing stages of the game, Chelsea had taken off mega signing Fernandez, which was due to a stomach problem.

Pochettino stated post-game: “He asked to go out because he was a little bit sick before the game.

“He suffered some problems in his stomach. He tried, he wanted to play and see if it went well. It didn’t go so well so that is why he had to come off.”

He then added on subbing Levi Colwill: “My perception was Levi was a little bit tired and we wanted to put some more offensive players like Malo on and provide more energy in the side.”

Pochettino slams Chelsea players after Newcastle defeat

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino slammed his players’ mentality after defeat at Newcastle.

The Blues lost 4-1 on the day with captain Reece James being sent off.

Pochettino said: “We were not prepared in the best way to compete today. That is my concern. We thought we were ready to compete today but we didn’t in the way the competition demanded.

“Even if Newcastle wasn’t great, it was an easy win. To come here, Chelsea, and show it would be difficult for them to play to win the game and beat us. It was so easy the way that we conceded. the way we were soft in every single challenge, we did not show we were playing for something important.

“That is why it made me angry and disappointed. Even if we talk about being a young team, we need to learn. These type of games make me very, very, very, very, very angry because it is about showing more personality and character. Okay we are young but we can not miss this type of opportunity to show our best.

“We can not come from Tottenham, Man City, [where] around the world people praised Chelsea and then… ‘Okay, I stop one step before, I don’t do the effort in the right moment. Ok no problem it is going to fix my teammate in behind’. That is a problem. We need to be more solid in this area.

“Mental of course and attitude, it is not attitude, it is about showing more strength in our mental game and be ready to compete. This is not the same that play football. I can play football, you can play football but to compete? I want to be ready to compete but today we didn’t.”

  • Mauricio Pochettino reacts to Newcastle heavy defeat

Mauricio Pochettino reacts to Newcastle heavy defeat

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino says defeat at Newcastle United was their worst for the season.

Chelsea were thumped 4-1, with skipper Reece James sent off. Alexander Isak had Newcastle ahead before Raheem Sterling equalised. But then Jamaal Lascelles, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon all struck.

Pochettino said: “It was our worst game of the season. It was tough to be in the stands. We cannot complain about the result, we did not read the game from the beginning. We did not play how we should play, we showed a lack of intensity and energy. Even after we scored, at 1-1, it was a chance for us to force them to play deep, but it was so easy for Newcastle. That is why I am so upset with the performance.

“It is a young team, they need this type of situation to realise. We will go to the hotel, then train early tomorrow, no time off. We cannot blame the players, it is the team together. We need to understand the level we need to compete, and learn about this situation.

“There are many details, many things that build confidence and strength. We already know what is going on, and we will try to change the dynamic.”

EPL: Why we drew 2-2 with Arsenal – Pochettino

Chelsea boss, Mauricio Pochettino, has lamented his side inability to defeat Arsenal after going two goal up in the encounter on Saturday.

Chelsea surrendered a two goal lead 13 minutes to the end of the thrilling encounter.

Cole Palmer and Mykhailo Mudryk gave Pochettino’s men the lead, but goals from Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard ensured Mikel Arteta’s men earned a point.

Pochettino, speaking to MOTD, said: “I think we lost two points. We are disappointed but you can not change the analysis and the judgement of the game. We were very competitive against a very good team fighting for the Premier League last season.

“We are a young team and I think the way we competed is a lot to be proud but we’re disappointed because after 77 minutes when we conceded the first goal I think we were better. The game was under control and we were playing well and dominating the game.

“But when you concede there is a risk. Yes, we’re disappointed but we have to take positive things. I wan to see my players sad because they lost two points. We are in a good direction. It’s important we show the people we can compete at this level.”

Pochettino admits knee setback for EPL record signing

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino spoke about the fitness of several of his star players.

The Argentine was asked about players who were absent from their game against Bournemouth, but had not previously been declared injured.

After the 0-0 draw on Sunday, during which the Blues missed countless chances to score, Pochettino stated to reporters:

“Marc Cucurella had a fever yesterday so was at home and not training, and today it continued.

“Noni Madueke came back from his national team with a muscle problem.

“Moises Caicedo came back with a knock to his knee.

“We need to assess them tomorrow, but that is why they was not available, along with another 10 or 11 players who were missing.”

  • I will help Sterling end hometown boos – Pochettino

I will help Sterling end hometown boos – Pochettino

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino insists he can get Raheem Sterling back to his best.

Sterling has been barracked by his own Chelsea fans this season.

But Pochettino said: “Maybe Sunday can change these boos to claps.

“Chelsea always have massive expectations. When you arrive at Chelsea as a player or coaching staff, what do people expect?

“To win and win trophies and to perform and to score.

“Now we have a squad that is young and some players who are a big investment for the club.

“It’s not fair to assess, OK, one game, two games, three games they’re not performing and we paid money and they need to perform like this.

“Always I use the same example. Real Madrid paid a huge fee, I don’t know what, for one player.

“The name was Zinedine Zidane, an amazing player. After six months you can ask the fans of Bernabeu, Real Madrid and people there — ‘What have we bought?’

“And he started to perform after seven, eight months. Zidane was 26, 27 and when you bring a player of 18, 19, 20, 21, be careful, they’re not machines.”

Pochettino admits his young team needs an experienced Sterling back to his best.

He said: “We’re happy because he is a player with experience that can help the young guys to evolve. If we can help the player to improve and be better and score goals and make assists, it’s much, much better for him and for the team.

“I am so happy about his performances and about the way he behaved the last two weeks. He worked really, really hard.

“Now I want to enjoy him. But we were suffering in previous seasons! You can feel that he’s fit, ready to compete, to get to his level and improving. And the last two weeks were important for him also moving forwards.”
