Ex-Man Utd defender reveals Pogba’s biggest problem

Former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre believes Paul Pogba’s biggest problem is consistency.

The Frenchman is enjoying a fine Euro 2020 with Les Bleus.

But questions persist about why he can’t produce similar performances on a consistent basis for United, and Silvestre is echoing those calls.

“The problem with Paul Pogba is the consistency – or lack of,” Silvestre told Ladbrokes.

“When he’s at the top of this game, his level is something else, but he finds it difficult to repeat that game after game.

“I look at it this way; he’s a world-class player, he’s got world-class attributes for sure. The question is, can he repeat it every three days? I’m not sure he can.

“He hasn’t done it for Man United, I’m not sure he can do it for France either.”

Silvestre added: “I’m always happy to see him on the pitch for club or country, because he’s been unlucky with injuries. The frustrating part is that we haven’t seen him reach his levels week-in, week-out.

“I don’t know whether it’s a psychological thing or a physical thing. I’m a Man United supporter and a France supporter, so I’m always hoping that whoever he represents, we see the best of him, because we saw against Germany just how much he can give to the team.”

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba says his time with Juventus were the most positive of his career.

The France international says he learned more while with Juve than at anytime in his career.

He told L’Equipe: “Where did I learn the football profession the most? At Juve. I went there very young. At 18 years old. And there you come to the men. You come, you train, it’s tactics, discipline. Especially discipline. You have to be disciplined because tactically, they are very sharp. When it hits, it hits, everyone really needs to be together.

“During the video sessions, they tell you: ‘Look, when you make this movement, it shifts here, when you make that call, it creates such a space’. They teach you the football profession.

“I learned defensively but also offensively. At Juve, I arrived as a defensive midfielder, central and they made me evolve as a more attacking midfielder.”

The two players battled it out as France defeated Germany 1-0 in their opening group game of Euro 2020.

An own goal from Mats Hummels settled the game.

During the clash, video footage showed an incident where Rudiger appeared to try and bite Pogba in the back during a physical altercation.

“With Tony, we are friends,” said Pogba post-game.

“This was nothing big. I think you saw the TV pictures, this is all over, this belongs to the past, I’m not crying for yellow or red cards for such actions.

“He nibbled, I think, a little bit on me, but we’ve known each other for a long time.

“He hasn’t received any card, I think it’s better like this. I don’t want him to be suspended because of such a situation. At the end of the match we hugged each other and that’s it.”

Pogba hasn’t improved Man Utd – Roy Keane

Manchester United great Roy Keane says he’s frustrated with Paul Pogba because he feels the Frenchman can do more.

Since United spent £89m on him they have failed to mount a title charge and picked up just three trophies in five seasons.

Keane told Sky Sports: “I like Paul as a player, simple as that. From what I hear, he’s a pretty decent human being, a good character.

“Slightly different in the way he leads his life, but he’s a talent boy.

“Again the one thing I’m disappointed with is, I don’t think he’s made Man Utd that much better or the players around him better.”

With just a year before he will be able to leave on a free, the United boss is fully aware his situation will need to be resolved and has hinted the club already know his Pogba stance.

“We want the best players here, and the club knows what I want,” Solskjaer told TV2.

“I do not know how the dialogue goes, but if we are to fight for the best trophies, we must have the best players.”

Pogba and Kante won the World Cup together with France in 2018.

Asked who has been his toughest opponent on the pitch in a Man Utd Q&A, Pogba said: “It’s tough against N’Golo Kante.

  • Grealish better option than Pogba – Roy Keane

Grealish better option than Pogba – Roy Keane

Manchester United legend Roy Keane wants to see Aston Villa ace Jack Grealish at Old Trafford.

Keane would swap Paul Pogba for Grealish at Manchester United ‘tomorrow’ if he could.

The Irishman told Sky Sports: “I’d swap Grealish for Pogba tomorrow, absolutely. Of course (they can all play together). Why not?

“We look at the stats for Manchester United over the last few years, whether it’s getting to semi-finals or ten league games where they’ve drawn, seven or eight of them have been 0-0.

“They’ve not had the quality in the crunch times. You can talk about Pogba, but they’ve not done it when they’ve had to do it.

“If Grealish comes in, get rid of one or two of them, get rid of Pogba, move him on.

“They’re talking about a contract, I think they’re worried because he’s into the last year, if they’re going to cash in on him, then do it this summer.

“You can’t have enough quality players at a club like Manchester United.”

We’re facing in-form Pogba with Man Utd – Klopp

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp heaped praise on Manchester United ace Paul Pogba for his display in their rout of Roma.

Pogba grabbed a goal as United thrashed the Serie A side 6-2 on Thursday night to put on foot in the Europa League final.

“Is (Marcus) Rashford on the wing or is it Pogba? Obviously Pogba played again a really good game last night,” said the Reds boss.

“Who we will face is pretty clear. They cannot make massive changes and probably will not make if they had no injuries last night. I think that’s clear.”

Klopp also highlighted United’s strength and depth in other attacking and midfield areas, adding: “I don’t think anyway United wanted to change a lot.

“I think 75 per cent of the team is the same team playing most of the games. Last line, midfield pretty much, Fred, (Scott) McTominay, maybe (Nemanja) Matic comes in.

“Then the four up front. (Bruno) Fernandes is playing pretty much all games and the other three he can change from time to time.”

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has launched a furious attack on Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho.

The midfielder has opened up on the turbulent spell under Mourinho at Old Trafford and pointed out what has changed under new boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

“What I have now with Ole is different, he wouldn’t go against the players,” Pogba told Sky Sports. “He wouldn’t go against the players.

“Maybe Ole wouldn’t pick them, but it’s not like he puts them on the side like they don’t exist anymore. That’s the difference between Mourinho and Ole.

“Once I had a great relationship with Mourinho, everybody saw that, and the next day you don’t know what happened. That’s the strange thing I had with Mourinho and I cannot explain to you because even I don’t know. So, yeah.”

He had the last laugh when they met Mourinho’s Tottenham at the weekend, with Pogba taking the opportunity to have another swipe.

“We won the game, he lost the game and he doesn’t want to speak about the game, he wants to speak about the dad of someone, that’s what he does,” Pogba added. “Everybody knows him, it’s very Mourinho.”

Pogba made his first start since early February in the loss to Leicester City on Sunday.

Speaking ahead of the match, Shearer said: “We’ve said it so many times that the ability is there but we probably haven’t seen it enough.

“We know what he can do, he did it in the week when he came on and scored and has been injured for the last six or seven weeks.

“So, it depends what he wants, but I expect the decision has been made already on whether he’s staying or going.”
