Solskjaer explains benching Pogba in Champions League loss

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says rotation was the reason for Paul Pogba’s benching in the loss to Istanbul Basaksehir on Wednesday.

The Frenchman was brought on in the second-half but was unable to turn around the 2-1 scoreline.

“It’s just man or game management [having Paul Pogba on the bench]. We’ve got loads of games, and we’ve just rotated a few names,” Solskjaer told BT Sport.

“We want to go and win the game. We’ve had a great start in the group, and if we can go and win tonight that’s a good response from the disappointment at the weekend.”

Fernandes reveals how Pogba reacts when benched

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has hailed the attitude of teammate Paul Pogba.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has benched Pogba for three of the last four matches and Fernandes hopes that will serve to motivate the midfielder.

He said: “Paul wants to play, he wants to be in the first XI, that is no different to any player – they all want to be in the first XI.

“Of course Paul is an amazing player who has done a lot of great things in the past few years. The way he came in against Paris Saint-Germain, against Newcastle, was perfect for the team.

“A lot of people may think Paul is angry on the bench and that he will do nothing when he comes on because he is angry, but he comes in with the right motivation, as we saw with his assist in Paris.

“He was there, he was fighting, holding the ball in the corner for us, he did a really good job.

“Maybe some people think he was angry because he wanted to play and that he wants to leave the club. Everyone knows the qualities Paul has, he is doing very well.

“Being on the bench is a problem for everyone, but this problem is motivation for Paul.

“He uses this as motivation and he is helping the team a lot when he comes in and plays, like he did in the last game in the Champions League.”

Man Utd trigger Pogba contract extension

Manchester United have triggered the 12 month option in Paul Pogba’s contract.

Pogba’s £290,000-a-week deal was due to run out at the end of the season but United made the decision to trigger the clause several weeks ago, says the Daily Mail.

It means Pogba cannot leave as a free agent next summer or talk to foreign clubs in January, having once again described the prospect of playing for Real Madrid as “a dream” last week.

The comment raised more questions over his future at Old Trafford, but at least United have the reassurance of knowing their investment in the 27-year-old midfielder is protected.

“Paul’s our player,” said manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. “He’s going to be here for another two years and I’m sure he’s focused on doing his best for us.

“We want to see the best of Paul and I’m sure in the next couple of years we’ll get the best out of him.”

Manchester United are putting plans in place to sign a long-term replacement for Paul Pogba.

In a recent interview on international duty, Pogba admitted that it would be his “dream” to join Real Madrid in future.

AS says United are already devising a plan to replace Pogba next summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have taken Pogba’s departure for granted, with club bosses now looking towards his compatriot Eduardo Camavinga.

The Rennes midfielder is one of the most highly-sought after youngsters in world football after breaking through for the Ligue 1 side last year.

Camavinga also made his international debut earlier this week, opening his account for France during the 7-1 win in Ukraine.

Pogba had hoped to stage a big comeback to Didier Deschamps squad, after a year’s absence.

His position has now been taken by by the 17 year-old Rennes player Eduardo Camavinga.

Tanguy Ndombele will also not be called up for the national side too.

The France’s squad is scheduled to meet Sweden on 5 September and Croatia on 8 September in the Nations League.

    Police Seize Pogba’s Rolls-Royce

Paul Pogba‘s Rolls-Royce has been seized by police after he was pulled over for driving with a French number plate, according to reports.

The Sun report that the Manchester United star was seen driving on the M56 and was stopped by officers as he exited near Manchester Airport.

Greater Manchester Police reportedly took the special edition car on the A4538 near Hale, Cheshire, while the midfielder was loaded into the back of the patrol car.

Laws state that foreign cars that have been in Britain for more than six months in a year must be registered with the DVLA and fitted with UK plates.

But owners residing in the UK must register their cars within two weeks of importing it.

A witness told The Sun: ‘We noticed the car going past us on the motorway because it really stands out, but we had no idea who was in it.

‘It was already indicating off when the police pulled in behind it and then put the blue lights on after they were safely off the motorway.

‘We couldn’t believe it when we saw the driver was Paul Pogba. It looked like he did everything that was asked.

‘We wondered what it was all about, he didn’t look like he was speeding or anything.’

The 27-year-old is due to make his long-awaited return to the pitch as United travel to Tottenham on Friday night.

The Frenchman has spent the majority of the season on the sidelines through injury and has been linked with several moves away from Old Trafford.

Pogba will have a week to get the car back and will also have to pay £150 as well as £20 for every day it’s held.

Greater Manchester Police said: ‘At around 12.55pm, police on a routine patrol in the Trafford area stopped a vehicle on Hale Road.

‘The vehicle was seized under section 165 of the Road Traffic Act.

‘A 27-year-old man has been reported for driving otherwise in accordance with a UK driving licence.’

  • EPL: Solskjaer speaks on Pogba leaving in January

EPL: Solskjaer speaks on Pogba leaving in January

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has maintained that Paul Pogba will not be sold in the January transfer window.

Pogba was touted for a move away from Old Trafford in the summer, having expressed a desire to undertake a new challenge at the end of last season.

The France international was heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid, but Solskjaer ultimately convinced the playmaker to stay in Manchester for the start of the 2019-20 campaign.

Unfortunately, Pogba has been unable to make a significant contribution to United’s cause since then, having struggled with a persistent ankle injury.

Solskjaer does not expect the 26-year-old to return to action for another month, with another bout of surgery on the cards as he continues his recovery.

Pogba sat out United’s 0-0 draw against Wolves in their third-round FA Cup tie at Molineux on Saturday evening, and Solskjaer was forced to field questions over his future once again post-match.

When asked if there was any chance the World Cup winner could leave Old Trafford in the winter market, the United manager responded defiantly: “You won’t see Paul [Pogba] go in January.”

  • Pogba penalties save points for Man Utd

Manchester United beat West Ham 2-1 in the Premier League on Saturday to go above Arsenal into fifth, with Paul Pogba scoring two penalties.

The first half was defined by contentious refereeing decisions, with Felipe Anderson’s 10th-minute goal incorrectly ruled out for offside before Man Utd were awarded a questionable penalty not long after, which Pogba converted in the 17th minute.

Anderson deservedly got West Ham back on level terms four minutes after the break, before Ryan Fredericks brought down Anthony Martial in the 79th minute for United’s second penalty of the game, which Pogba also powered home.

The win sees Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side go above Arsenal into fifth spot, with the Gunners playing Watford on Monday night, while West Ham have lost their third successive Premier League game and remain in 11th.

Manchester United pair Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial have withdrawn from the France squad for games against the Netherlands and Uruguay, BBC reports.

On Monday, both reported to France’s Clairefontaine base but forward Martial was ruled out with a hip injury.

Arsenal forward Alexandre Lacazette and Tottenham midfielder Moussa Sissoko have been called up as replacements.

Martial, who won his last cap for France in March, was recalled by Didier Deschamps last week after being left out of the World Cup squad.

Les Bleus have a Nations League game against the Netherlands in Rotterdam on 16 November before playing Uruguay in a friendly at the Stade de France on 20 November.
