  • I don’t deserve to win Ballon d’Or – Pogba

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba says he would love a Frenchman to win the Ballon d’Or, but does not believe it should be him.
Pogba was named on the 30-man shortlist for the award for the best player of the year, with the winner to be announced in Paris on December 3.
There were seven Frenchmen named on the list after helping Les Bleus win their second World Cup in Russia this summer.
Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante and Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris are in contention, along with Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe, Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann and Real Madrid’s Champions League-winning duo Raphael Varane and Karim Benzema.
“Whether it’s Grizou (Griezmann), Kylian (Mbappe) or Raph’ (Varane), they deserve it much more than me,” Pogba told AFP.
“I can not designate one. But I hope with all my heart that this is one of the three.
“One of the four also because there is NG (Kante). That’s all I hope for anyway, because there are many who deserve it. I do not put myself in.”
Every Ballon d’Or since 2008 has been won by either Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi and the pair are both among the favourites again this year.

  • Mourinho reveals why he changed Paul Pogba’s role

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, has explained that he changed midfielder, Paul Pogba’s role in the second half against Newcastle United because he wanted a better distribution of the ball from the back.
The Portuguese moved Pogba into a deeper position in the second half after taking off midfielder, Scott McTominay at half-time, with Nemanja Matic filling in at centre-back alongside, Chris Smalling.
Mourinho’s tactical switch helped the Red Devils turn a 2-0 deficit, with midfielder, Juan Mata, forwards, Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez getting on the scoresheet.
“Pogba didn’t play centre-back,” Mourinho said after the match.
“He was playing with Matic in front of [Chris] Smalling because we need some technical quality to bring the ball from the back and the way to have some technical quality to bring the ball from the back was to play Paul and Matic there.”
Mourinho also commended Manchester United fans after chanting his name throughout the evening.
“I’m amazed by that,” Mourinho added. “I’m amazed by that, I don’t want that, if I could tell them please don’t do it I would say that I think this is not about me is about the football club, the club they love, and about the club we represent with all the honour and dignity.”

  • EPL: Mourinho finally speaks on Pogba’s performance at World Cup 2018

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho has finally spoken on his midfielder, Paul Pogba’s World Cup performance with France.

The Portuguese gaffer also said he was confident that the euphoria of lifting the World Cup will provide a boost to Pogba’s club career at Manchester United.

The 25-year-old Frenchman was instrumental in France’s triumph in Russia.

Mourinho expects to be without Pogba for the start of the season in August and Mourinho said the midfielder will inevitably be in an exuberant mood when he does report back for club duty.

“To win the World Cup can only be a positive thing. It’s difficult to say that to win the World Cup is not good for a player’s career. It’s amazing, fantastic,” said Mourinho in Los Angeles, at the start of United’ s US pre-season tour.

“So many good players have never had the chance to be world champions or their country is not strong enough.

“For Paul, I think it’s the first World Cup that he has gone to and to be a world champion can only be fantastic.

“It’s a young team, apart from ( Hugo ) Lloris , they have more Euros and World Cups together . So I think the future for him in the French national team can only be brilliant.

“I hope that he understands why he was so good .
That’s the point about his performance level and his contribution to a winning team.

“It’s important for him to understand why he was so good in the second part of the competition. In the final, he was absolutely brilliant.”

  • We need to get back winning mentality, Manchester United’s Pogba says

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba on Saturday said it was high time the club got back its winning mentality, adding that the team’s recent poor run of form was unacceptable.

TheNewsGuru reports that Manchester United’s dismal run of results in December had continued on Saturday with a third consecutive league draw.

They were held 0-0 at home to Southampton on Saturday.

The result meant the Red Devils dropped to third in the English Premier League standings below Chelsea who earlier thrashed an abject Stoke City 5-0.

“We wanted to win today, but we could only get the draw. We need to get back in the winning mentality, because it will be better for all of us.

“We didn’t have the final pass today, and we had a penalty kick that wasn’t given, and if we had that, and scored, it would’ve changed the game.

“The pressure is coming from behind, but we have to forget about everyone else, and focus on ourselves.”

United manager Jose Mourinho blamed the referee for the result, adding that even though United missed a lot of scoring chances, the referee also denied the team a clear penalty kick.

“I think it is also a disappointing afternoon for Craig [Pawson, the referee] because he’s a fantastic referee, one of the best in Europe.

“We missed easy chances, but I’m really unhappy with the penalty kick, not with Pawson’s performance -, Today, I think Craig had a good performance. It was a big decision to make from Craig.

“I’m happy with the players’ attitude, the players’ desires and I’m very happy with my place,” Mourinho said.

Meanwhile, Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino has said his players gave a good account of themselves, saying that his team would build on their performance in their next game.

“I think we were solid and we had our moments in the game. I think United had moments where they were uncomfortable on the pitch and we played really well.

“I think we can use this performance as an example for the next game. Today I think our positioning was good and we did very well.

“It’s not just the point that is important, it is important the way we played today and we have the possibility of bouncing back from difficult moments.

“This month was really difficult. We had injuries and troubles. So, I’m happy we bounced back from that. This is good news for us,” Pellegrino said.

  • Man Utd beat Arsenal in thriller but Pogba sent off

Man Utd beat Arsenal in thriller but Pogba sent off

Manchester United ruthlessly punished defensive errors to become the first side to win a league game at Arsenal since January in one of the games of the season so far.

Jose Mourinho’s side were reduced to 10-men late on when Paul Pogba was sent off for a dangerous tackle and they were aided by a stunning goalkeeping display by David De Gea throughout.

But they did telling damage early on when Antonio Valencia pounced on a loose Laurent Koscielny pass to drill the opener, before Jesse Lingard side-footed a second after robbing Shokdran Mustafi to link smartly with Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial.

The strikes meant United had scored as many goals in 11 minutes as they had in eight away fixtures against the Premier League’s so-called ‘big six’ clubs.

But an end-to-end first-half, which delivered 20 shots on goal, saw Arsenal hit the woodwork through Alexandre Lacazette and Granit Xhaka during a frenetic goalmouth scramble, before De Gea denied Hector Bellerin, Sead Koasinac, and spectacularly prevented a Lukaku own goal.

The Spaniard could do nothing about Lacazette’s simple finish on 48 minutes but after Lingard had hit the post in a breathless start to the second half, De Gea produced an unbelievable double save from Lacazette and Alexis Sanchez.

His heroics maintained the advantage during an opening 15 minutes to the second half which saw United have just 26% of possession, but Lingard was on hand to tap in a third on 63 minutes after good work by Pogba.

Pogba’s dismissal arrived when he mistimed a tackle to effectively stamp on the back of Bellerin’s leg, and the Frenchman will now miss the Manchester derby next Sunday.

But his moment of woe felt merely a footnote in a riveting encounter which moved second-placed United to within five points of their city rivals.

Mourinho opens up in a thriller

Mourinho has garnered a reputation for defensive set-ups on trips to the league’s traditional big clubs but his side went after their hosts early on, hounding possession high up the pitch to great effect.

Their opening two goals owed much to slack use of possession by the home side but needed clinical finishes, notably when Martial cleverly flicked into the path of Lingard for the second.

The reward for their adventure secured a first win for Mourinho in his last 12 away fixtures against the so-called ‘big six’.

He could be forgiven for not enjoying seeing Arsenal fire 33 shots at goal in a fixture which lived up to its billing in every way.

But while the shot-counter and De Gea’s brilliance point to United riding their luck at times, they were impressive in offering a balance between defence and attack.

Nemanja Matic was consistently well placed, never more so than when blocking a goalbound Aaron Ramsey shot with the score at 2-0.

And the presence of the defensive midfielder once again freed Pogba, who in bursting into the box to lay on Lingard’s second now has five assists this season, surpassing his four in the previous campaign.

Whether Mourinho will choose to live so dangerously against City next week remains to be seen, but those watching from a neutral stance would be fortunate to see a game as good as this one again.

Errors leave a mountain to climb

Arsene Wenger will be familiar with this feeling.

Only twice in 18 meetings with Mourinho has he got the upper hand and the charitable way in which his side gave away goals will not sit well.

Koscielny’s cross-field pass and Mustafi’s indecision ultimately left a mountain to climb if Arsenal were to record a 12th straight home win in the league.

The ease with which Pogba sauntered into the area to create a third just as Arsenal were seeking to build on Lacazette’s goal also smacked of weakness.

Arsenal can justifiably feel aggrieved by a penalty shout that was turned down late on when Danny Welbeck was caught by Matteo Darmian but by that point, the 10-men of United had finally managed to calm a frantic affair.

Wenger’s side drop out of the Champions League qualification places into fifth. They may well scratch their heads as to how they only found the net once but, not for the first time, it was at the other end where their shortcomings showed up.

  • ‘I have no idea when Pogba will be fit’ says Mourinho

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said he has “no idea’’ when record signing Paul Pogba will be fit again after the French midfielder suffered a hamstring injury.

The France player had sustained the injury in a UEFA Champions League tie against Basel early in September.

The 24-year-old, who cost 89 million pounds last year —- a world record at the time —- played only a handful of games this season before being sidelined.

“Paul is not here, I don’t know when he comes back, when he’s available, I’ve no idea,” Mourinho told a news conference ahead of his team’s Saturday’s visit to Huddersfield Town.

He hopes Zlatan Ibrahimovic will return by the end of the year, however.

The Portuguese also has better news of Marcus Rashford, who is fit in spite of coming off during the midweek Champions League win over Benfica with a knee injury.

United will be looking to make history by keeping an eighth clean sheet in the opening nine league games of the season.

No other team has achieved that in the top division of English football.

Mourinho was criticised for a defensive approach in last weekend’s dull goalless draw at Liverpool.

Stoke City are the only side to score, in a 2-2 draw, against Mourinho’s team in eight Premier League games.

Earlier in the season, United appeared to be recapturing the adventurous style historically associated with the club.

They won 4-0 four times against lowly opposition but have since been outscored by neighbours Manchester City, who now lead them by two points at the top of the table.

The game at Huddersfield is the first meeting between the clubs since 1972 and the Yorkshire side have not won one since 20 years before that, in March 1952.

After a good start, Huddersfield have not won a Premier League game for two months, but Mourinho insisted that his team will know what to expect from a newly promoted club.

“We are silly if we don’t know what is waiting for us,” he said.

“Everybody knows the Premier League and knows what it means to play against newly promoted teams.

“Every team in the Premier League is good and thinks they can win every match against every opponent.

“The players will be buzzing and the supporters will be happy to have a big club playing in their stadium.”

  • Manchester United win UEFA Europa Cup

Paul Pogba propelled Manchester United towards a 2-0 victory over Ajax on Wednesday in a Europa League final rendered heavy with emotion by this week’s terror attack in Manchester, AFP reports.

A night that began with a moment of silence, then applause, in memory of the 22 people who died at Manchester Arena on Monday ended with United completing their trophy collection through goals from Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Reminders of the attack were everywhere at Stockholm’s Friends Arena, from United’s black armbands to the chants of “Manchester!” from their fans, while Pogba, too, was grieving, following the recent death of his father.

Victory enabled United manager Jose Mourinho, who said prior to the game that he and his players were struggling not to think about the tragedy, to bring his maiden Old Trafford season to a successful conclusion.

He had already guided United to glory in the League Cup and despite a sixth-place finish in the Premier League, success in the Europa League means his side will return to the Champions League next season.

United became only the fifth club – after Juventus, Ajax, Bayern Munich and Chelsea – to have won the Champions League, the Europa League and the now defunct European Cup Winners’ Cup.

  • Mourinho hails Pogba, says he is best midfielder in the world

Mourinho hails Pogba, says he is best midfielder in the world

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, has hailed Paul Pogba as the best midfielder in the world.

The Portuguese was speaking after their 3-1 win over Sunderland at Old Trafford on Monday.

Daley Blind, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored for United, as they romped to a Boxing Day win.

Pogba nearly provided United with the lead in the 27th minute following a one-two with Jesse Lingard, but his effort went wide.

His overall contribution was enough to earn praise from his manager afterwards.

“He is the best midfielder in the world,” Mourinho simply said.
