  • Tinubu dodged a poisonous knife – Shehu Sani mocks El-Rufai over chief of staff, SGF slots

Tinubu dodged a poisonous knife – Shehu Sani mocks El-Rufai over chief of staff, SGF slots

A former senator who represented Kaduna Central at the 8th Senate, Shehu Sani, has  mocked the immediate past governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai for missing out in the recent appointments made by President Bola Tinubu.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Tinubu appointed a former Governor of Benue State, George Akume as Secretary to the Government of the Federation while the outgoing Speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila was appointed as Chief of Staff.

Before Akume and Gbajabiamila were appointed, there were rumours in various quarters that the former Kaduna State governor would get one of the positions considering his closeness to the President during electioneering.

Reacting to the development, Sani, who was apparently referring to comments credited to El-Rufai on Islamisation agenda, said Tinubu had “dodged a poisonous knife” by scheming the former governor out of the two positions he described as “critical”.

“If Tinubu had appointed ‘Mr Over Sabi’ as SGF or Chief of Staff, he would have sown the seed of discord between the President and the Vice President, speak and move around as more important than the two. Tinubu has dodged a poisonous knife,” Sani said in a tweet on Wednesday afternoon.

El-Rufai was alleged in a trending video on social media to have said that the Muslim-Muslim ticket in the Kaduna governorship election would be sustained beyond 20 years in the state.

  • Looted COVID-19 palliatives poisonous, Ekiti warns residents

Looted COVID-19 palliatives poisonous, Ekiti warns residents

Ekiti State government raised an alarm on Saturday that huge quantities of poisonous items, mistaken for food yet to be distributed as Covid-19 palliatives, were looted in warehouses in Ado-Ekiti on Friday.

Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mr Akin Omole, said in a statement in Ado Ekiti that raising the alarm became expedient to forestall any harm that could befall anyone who consumed the items.

Also reportedly looted was the office of the Agricultural Development Programme (ADP) in Ado Ekiti.

“Information at our disposal revealed that the Federal Government’s silos, the ADP warehouse and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) stores, all in Ado- Ekiti, were attacked by hoodlums under the guise of seeking Covid-19 palliatives.

“We insist that Ekiti state currently has no Covid-19 palliative warehouse as all the palliatives had been distributed.

“Unfortunately, the items carted away were Single Super Phosphate and NPK fertilisers, which they erroneously thought was “Gaari’’, cassava grains.

“The SEMA store too has only emergency supplies for disaster response.

“Some people even made away with pre-fermented corns preserved for planting. All these items are poisonous and not fit for consumption.

“We, therefore, appeal to our people not to consume these items because they can kill,’’ Omole warned.

In a similar statement, Dr Olabode Adetoyi, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, confirmed the looting, warning that most of the items carted away contained chemically-treated seeds meant for planting.

“They are not suitable for consumption,’’ he declared.

According to reports, the looters actually defied a heavy downpour in Ado-Ekiti on Friday night to storm the warehouses.

Many travelled long distances either in their private vehicles or in taxis or on motorcycles to get to the warehouses to loot.

Soldiers drafted to the warehouses were late as most of them were almost empty before they arrived. They deployed minimal force in their attempt to send the looters away, but in spite of this, some of them sustained injuries.

Some residents are of the opinion that the looters were encouraged by similar incidents earlier reported in Lagos and Osun states, where looted many bags of rice, beans, spaghetti and other consumables stored in government warehouses.

  • Lagos arrest three in sale of poisonous ‘Ponmo’

Lagos arrest three in sale of poisonous ‘Ponmo’

Lagos State government said it has arrested three persons connected with the sale of toxic cow-skin popularly known as ‘Ponmo’ in Ojo and Iba Local Government and Local Council Development Areas of the State and confiscated large amount of poisonous cow-skin.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris who disclosed this at the weekend while reviewing report of preliminary investigation and enforcement carried out on the sale of the toxic ‘Ponmo’ in the areas, stated that the three persons involved had been charged to court while samples of the confiscated ‘Ponmo’ had been sent to the NAFDAC Laboratory for suitability test analysis for human consumption.

Idris, while explaining what brought about the action stated that the attention of the State Government was drawn to the activities of traders who deal in the sales of the poisonous cow-skin at odd hours in different locations in Ojo and Iba councils.

“Preliminary investigations and suspects tracing revealed that the traders were very active in the early hours between the hours 4.00am and 6.00am at various locations such as Volkswagen bus stop, iyana Iba, Afolabi Ege Markets, all within Ojo local government and Iba local council areas of the State.

“Furthermore, a company said to be located at Ijedodo area of Iba LCDA was indicted as source of supply of this toxic Ponmo and had subsequently been put under surveillance”, Idris said.

The Commissioner, however, called on the public to be vigilant and report any suspected activities and sales of unwholesome foods and food products to environmental health officer in their nearest local government or to the Ministry of Health or the Ministry of Agriculture.

He also advised the public against purchase and consumption of foods which sources were doubtful or perceived to be hazardous to human health and wellbeing.

Idris while reiterating the commitment of the State government to the protection and promotion of good health for its citizens noted that government will always do the needful to ensure that only unwholesome and healthy foods are available for consumption in the Lagos State.

  • Court insists NBC tells Nigerians taking Fanta, Sprite with Vitamin C is poisonous

Lagos State High Court in Igbosere has dismissed Nigerian Bottling Company’s application, praying to stay the execution of a judgment which mandated it to indicate on the bottles of Fanta and Sprite that the products cannot be taken along with Vitamin C.

The NBC, through its lawyer, Mr. Tunde Busari (SAN), had urged the court to stay the execution of the judgment pending the outcome of its appeal.

Busari had said it was important to protect his client’s business interest pending the outcome of the appeal.

But Justice Adedayo Oyebanji refused the application, holding that while any adverse effect suffered by the NBC to its business interest could be redressed, injury to human health could not.

The judge held, “It seems to the court evident that in the event of a refusal of the application for stay of execution, if the business interest of the Nigerian Bottling Company is consequently adversely affected, a return to status quo can be achieved if Nigerian Bottling Company’s appeal at the Court of Appeal succeeds. It is beyond argument that if the application for stay is granted and human health is consequently adversely affected, it is most unlikely that there can indeed be a return to status quo.

“It is imperative to add the resultant effect of the order sought to be stayed is the preservation of human life.”

The business interest of the Nigerian Bottling Company cannot, in my respected view, take precedent over public health. The importance of public health is clearly demonstrated and underscored by the constitutional provision in Section 45 thereof.

“For the reasons herein adumbrated, it seems to me manifest that the Nigerian Bottling Company has failed to disclose any special circumstances which would warrant the grant of this application. Accordingly, Nigeria Bottling Company’s application for stay of execution fails and it is hereby dismissed.”
