Poland’s new right-wing president takes oath of office

Poland’s new right-wing president Karol Nawrocki took the oath of office on Wednesday and immediately came out with an anti-migration and anti-euro statement.

“I will be the voice of the citizens who want sovereignty and security,” Nawrocki said in his inaugural speech. No to illegal migration, yes to the zloty, no to the euro.”

Poland does not currently have the European Union’s common currency and the conservative nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) opposition party, which backed Nawrocki, opposes adopting it.

Nawrocki’s PiS supporters chanted his name and new title after he was sworn in.

The 42-year-old historian, who ran as an independent, won the run-off election in early June by a small margin over Warsaw’s liberal Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski.

The victory marked a significant political defeat for the pro-European government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

Apart from being an eurosceptic, Nawrocki is also a supporter of U.S. President Donald Trump.

The new Polish president is expected to attempt to bring about a political shift in Poland.

Nawrocki succeeds Andrzej Duda, who had to step down after two terms in office.

Traditionally, the president in Poland takes the oath of office before the National Assembly, which consists of both chambers of parliament.

This decision is dedicated to the younger generation, with the aim of bringing the prestigious event to Poland for the first time. While President Andrzej Duda had previously expressed interest in hosting the Olympics in 2036, Tusk’s announcement sets a more realistic target of 2040 or 2044, considering the International Olympic Committee’s decisions and commitments.

Poland has experience in co-hosting major international events, such as the European football Championship in 2012 with Ukraine and the European Games in 2023, but this would be its first time hosting the Olympics.

Protests: Poland appeals to Nigeria to release seven nationals arrested for waiving Russian flag

The government of Poland has appealed to Nigeria for the release of the seven Polish who were arrested in Kano for allegedly  raising the Russian flag during the recent hunger protest in that city.

Jakub Wisniewski, the deputy foreign minister met with Nigeria´s charge d´affaires in Warsaw where he made a case for the release of the arrested persons – a lecturer and six students.

They had come from Warsaw University to take part in a Hausa language programme.

“During the meeting, I conveyed that I was convinced that the students´ behavior could have resulted from their ignorance of local customs, culture and laws.

“I appealed for the possibility of their return to Poland, to their homes, where their families are waiting for them,” Wisniewski said.

But Wisniewski refused to believe that the students carried Russian flags apparently because of rare pro-Russian sentiment in his country.

The Central European country has bad memories of suffering under Russian rule in the past and the citizens are deeply critical of what they see as Russian aggression in Ukraine.

According to Wisniewski  the seven Poles were taken to Abuja and are safe.

Poland´s consul was scheduled to meet with them yesterday afternoon.

However, the Department of State Services (DSS) announced on Wednesday that the seven polish arrested were undergoing interrogation.

The Federal Government warned against foreign interference in the protests, saying “appropriate action” would be meted out to any “foreign entity residing in Nigeria” that directly or indirectly played a role in the demonstrations.

Six Spaniards were also arrested for their alleged involvement in the protests.

Spokesman for the DSS, Dr. Peter Afunanya, said of the arrested Poles and others: “For the persons we have picked up from Kano because of where they were found during the protest and display of the foreign flag, that was two days ago.

“As a responsible security organisation, we owe it an obligation to do some verification and ascertain basic reasons and circumstances for some cases.

“They were picked as a result of security enforcement because of where they were when the incident happened.

It is not a targeted operation on behalf of the DSS and Nigeria.

“But we have a plea. In the cause of the discharge of our duty, we will also see that some Nigerians definitely would want to use foreign lands as a launch pad to attack domestic peace and stability.

“We plead that you do not offer your country to some persons who may be deviant or have a terrorist inclination.

“Nigeria is a country with a large population and I believe that the support other countries will give will help us.”

He said that the arrests were not a targeted attempt on Polish nationals.

Afunanya warned that the government would not spare anyone found guilty of funding the protests.

Also speaking during a diplomatic corps briefing, Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar stressed the value the government placed on the “cordial relationships it has with many foreign nations,” but said Nigeria would not fold its hands and watch foreign entities meddle in its internal affairs.

He said: “The government would take appropriate action against any foreign entity residing in Nigeria that is found to have directly or indirectly supported the protesters by whatever means or seeks to interfere in the internal affairs of the country.

We are always ready for further protests, say Police.

The Police said yesterday that they were ready to forestall any breakdown of law and order following reports that the organisers of the cost of living protests were mobilising for the ‘grand finale’ today.

Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the police would not be taken unaware, adding that the conduct of the protesters would be handled professionally nationwide.

Adejobi said: “We are always ready for any eventuality. We are not taking anything for granted. The situation will be handled professionally.”

On those arrested during the protests, Adejobi said they would  be charged to court.

Dutch forward, Wout Weghorst clinched the winner two minutes after coming on as  the Netherlands began their Euro 2024 campaign on a winning note  with victory against Poland at Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion.

Poland were without their all-time top scorer Robert Lewandowski  due to  thigh injury but his replacement, Adam Buksa headed home the opener.

  • Poland opposes Germany on permanent UN Security Council seat

Poland opposes Germany on permanent UN Security Council seat

Poland has opposed Germany gaining a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said on Thursday.

The proposal, made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, is “rather strange and a great disappointment” from Poland’s point of view,  according to Blaszczak.

Kiev seems to have forgotten that Germany did not initially come to Ukraine’s aid at the beginning of Moscow’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, he said.

Blaszczak said that Germany should first take responsibility in its relationship with Poland for the destruction caused during the World War II.

“The demand for war reparations that we made to Germany is still valid,” Blaszczak said.

Zelensky spoke out in favour of a permanent seat on the UN Security Council for Germany on Wednesday.

    There are 193 UN member-states.

Five countries – the U.S., China, Russia, Britain and France – have permanent seats on the security council and can veto all decisions.

There are then 10 non-permanent members elected to two-year terms.

In October 2022, Poland’s national conservative PiS Government demanded Berlin to pay 1.3 trillion euros (1.38 trillion U.S. dollars) in World War II reparations in a diplomatic note.

However, Germany rejects any demands for reparations.

It considers the case closed due to the 1990 Two Plus Four Treaty, which regulated the foreign policy aspects of German unity.

  • Copenhagen hosts opponents from Poland: who will win?

Copenhagen hosts opponents from Poland: who will win?

    Copenhagen before the game

In the previous qualifying round, Copenhagen, despite the support of their fans, could not translate their advantage into success over Sparta Prague (0:0) as were predicted at https://dailysports.net/  before. The Danes delivered three times more shots on goal than the opponent, but the implementation failed. In the previous qualifying round, the team defeated the Icelandic Breidablik without any problems (8:3 on aggregate). Having won the last two national championships, the white and blue hope to lift the trophy over their heads for the third time this season. Not resting on what they have achieved in the first four rounds of the championship, they are currently showing an excellent form: last Friday, Copenhagen beat Odense at home with a score of 2:1.

The Danish team has already managed to pass one stage of the tournament qualification by this moment. At the last stage of qualifying, thecopsdid not notice the resistance of the Icelandic Breidablik, defeating them in two games with a total score of 8:3. In the new season of the national championship, the team was able to start superbly, gaining 12 points in four games played. By this time, the guests were stronger than Lyngby (2:1), Vejle (3:2), Randers (4:0) and Odense (2:1). In the home standings, Copenhagen is confidently in first place.

    Rakow preparation

The Polish club has been in the Champions League qualification since the very start. Only the preliminary round was passed. At the same time, the team played 3 matches in parallel in Ekstraklasa. Rakow has played a lot of matches in recent weeks in connection with participation in the qualification of European cups. Numerous flights and accumulated fatigue, plus lack of motivation after European competition should play into the hands of the guests. One way or another, the hosts, to one degree or another, will have to resort to rotation, which will inevitably affect the quality of the game. And the fact that the defense of Rakuva acted under constant pressure can be seen in the results of the team, which both scored and conceded in almost all matches, not only in European competitions, but also in the matches of the Polish championship that fell between games in European competitions.

    Match prediction

The guests of the field compared to the past season began to demonstrate much more open football. Therefore, it is not surprising that in the last five matches with the participation of Rakow both teams scored goals. Probably in this meeting, theredbluewill allow a lot of chances at their gates. In this regard, it is logical to offer both to score a bet on this game. “Redblue” in the current championship so far only in search of their best playing form.

  • My goal as the new coach of Poland – ex-Portugal manager, Santos

My goal as the new coach of Poland – ex-Portugal manager, Santos

Fernando Santos led Portugal to victory at Euro 2016 and the 2019 Nations League but quit after their exit in the World Cup quarter-finals at the hands of African giant, Morocco.

According to Sanchez, working in Poland is a big honour for him, saying that his first goal will be to make it to the 2024 European Championships.

He said “It is an honour to continue my work as a trainer here,” the 68-year-old said.

Cezary Kulesza, head of the Polish Football Federation, said “we have chosen the best” and “the choice was difficult”, as he tasked Santos with qualifying for the 2024 European Championship in Germany.

Santos previously managed Greece from 2010-2014 and led them to the Euros and World Cup, where they exited at the quarter-finals and round of 16 respectively.

“For me it’s very important in Poland to do what I did in the past – I want to leave a legacy here, something for the future. The world of soccer is changing, so I want to lay the foundation for a new future for the national team,” stated the new coach.

He also mentioned that he has no plans for a revolution, but to work hard and improve everything that has been there so far.

“It’s important to have a co-worker who is Polish. In the initial phase it’s very important – he knows the mentality, the personality better, and can convey my ideas better,” he stressed.

The Portuguese said that he has already spoken with Łukasz Piszczek and Tomasz Kaczmarek, who are candidates for his assistants, in Poland.

When asked about his goals Santos replied that he “wants to win everything”.

“I know that this is not always possible, because we have opponents on the other side. That’s why it’s very important to work out these rivals. I have a man on my staff for this task,” he added.

The Portuguese stated that he will not try to carry out a generational replacement in the team at any cost.

“Those who know my career know that I have introduced many young players to my teams, but it is not age that is most important to me. Quality is the basis. Technique, tactics, mentality,” he stressed.

Santos’ contract will run for three and half years, spanning two major tournaments, Euro 2024 and World Cup 2026.

Poland will begin the Euro 2024 qualifiers in March, facing the Czech Republic away and Albania at home.
