Qatar 2022: FIFA picks European referee for Argentina vs France final

Sunday’s World Cup final between European side France and South American football house Argentina will be officiated by a European referee from Poland Szymon Marciniak.

Reports say that referees chairman, Pierluigi Collina picked the polish referee ahead of others for the final game.

That is after the 41-year-old’s strong performances refereeing both finalists in the World Cup’s earlier stages.

The Polish ref  was in charge when France defeated  Denmark in the group stage encounter.

Marciniak also called Argentina’s 2-1 victory against Australia in the Last 16.

His experience refereeing both competitors means he has convinced he has what it takes to manage the final.

Michael Oliver and Spanish counterparts Antonio Mateu Lahoz have been sent back to their various countries over some irregularities..

World Cup: Mbappe strikes twice as France advance into quarter-finals

Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe scores a brace as World Cup holders France coasted past Poland 3-1 to reach the quarter-finals at the ongoing World Cup in Qatar.

AC Milan striker Olivier Giroud also scored to mark his 52nd goal for France to claim the country’s outright record, surpassing the great Thierry Henry.

The historic goal came on the stroke of half-time after Giroud controlled Kylian Mbappe’s pass before converting low into the net beyond the reach of Wojciech Szczesny.

But having provided the assist for the first goal, the brilliant Mbappe turned on the style by scoring two fabulous strikes in the second half.

He hit a powerful drive into the roof of the net from 16 yards for his first and curled home a wonderful second in injury time to take the lead in the Golden Boot race with five goals.

Didier Deschamps’ side had been left frustrated up until the opener and could well have fallen behind.

Poland’s best opening in the first half came when the ball dropped for Piotr Zielinski in the centre of the penalty area, but his strike was straight at Hugo Lloris.

Robert Lewandowski did manage a consolation for the Poles, rolling in a penalty with the last kick of the game.

England and Senegal meet on Sunday for the right to play France in next Saturday’s quarter-final.

Qatar 2022: Argentina defeat Poland 2-0 to progress to round of 16

Argentina booked a passage  to the round of 16 following their 2-0 over European nation Poland.

Argentina began their campaign with a shock 2-1 defeat by the Saudis, before bouncing back with a 2-0 victory over Mexico – with captain Lionel Messi scoring once in each fixture – to put them on three points.

The encounter seemed like it would end in a draw  after first half ended goalless.

However, upon resumption, Brighton midfielder, Molina got to the byline and cut the ball back where Mac Allister was waiting – the 23-year-old didn’t make a clean connection as he swept it with his right foot, but the direction was perfect and just kissed the far post after passing Szczesny.

Again, in the 67th minute, Enzo Fernandez drives at the defence and finds Alvaraz, who takes a touch, swivels and blasts a rocket into the top corner form a cool finish for the Argentina’s second goal.

Argentina go through as Group C winners, while Poland sneak through in second place due to having a better goal difference than Mexico.

They are through and will face Australia in the round of  16.

Meanwhile, in the other group game, Mexico defeated Saudi Arabia by 2-1 but failed to secure qualification based on goal difference.

The Mexicans needed a two goal difference to progress to the next round but could only secure a 2-1 win.

The Qatar 2022 World Cup has witnessed its fist goaless draw of the tournament after group C members Mexico and Poland settled for a 0-0 scoreline.

Robert Lewandowsky will be feeling very sad after missing a begging opportunity in the encounter.

The Polish forward missed  a penalty he was awarded after Hector Moreno grabbed a fistful of his shirt and dragged him to the ground.

Guillermo Ochoa guessed right and  dives to save the spot kick.

Saudi Arabia are the surprise leaders of Group C after the first round of games, their victory over Argentina having sent shockwaves around the football world.

Today’s group C result meant that Mexico and Poland are behind Saudi Arabia on the group standing after sharing the spoils.

Football power house, Argentina are rooted in the bottom of the table after first round of games.

Poland Explosion: Ex-Russian president, Medvedev says strikes provocation by west

Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, on Wednesday, said this week’s deadly rocket explosion in Poland was a provocation by the West, warning of a potential third world war.

“The story with the Ukrainian ‘rocket strikes’ on a Polish farm, proves only one thing: The West is increasing with its hybrid war against Russia the probability of starting a third world war,” the 57-year-old Putin’s ally tweeted.

The Russian Ministry of Defence had also initially described the rocket strike as a “provocation”.

Russian military bloggers shared images of the rocket debris, suggesting the rockets were part of an S-300 anti-aircraft defence system fired by Ukraine.

Dmitry Polyansky, the deputy head of Russia’s UN delegation, also denied that Moscow was responsible for the deadly incident in Poland.

Polyansky went on to suggest that an upcoming UN Security Council session, scheduled last week by Western nations, was evidence of a conspiracy.

“And now, suddenly, on the evening (before the UN Security Council session) there is a ‘rocket attack’ on Poland,” the Russian diplomat said.

However, in the wake of the rocket strike in Poland, Ukraine’s defence minister said that a no-fly zone needed to be set up over the war-torn country, as fears about the fallout from the Russian invasion have escalated.

“We were asked to close the sky, because (the) sky has no borders. Not for uncontrolled missiles. Nor for the threat they carry for our EU & NATO neighbours,” tweeted Ukraine’s Defence Minister, Oleksii Resnikov.

“This is the reality we’ve been warning about,” Resnikov added.

NATO, US set to investigate Russian missile in Poland

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has promised to investigate the missile strike on a village in the eastern part of Poland, killing two persons.

Report say that strike appeared like a “Russian-made missile” but the investigation is meant to  unravel who fired it on a NATO ally.

NATO will be having an emergency meeting any time from now to hold an emergency meeting.

According to the  Polish foreign ministry, the weapon fell on Przewodow, about six kilometres (3-1/2 miles) from the border with Ukraine, with the country convening a meeting of its national security council.

“We do not have any conclusive evidence at the moment as to who launched this missile … it was most likely a Russian-made missile, but this is all still under investigation at the moment,” President Andrzej Duda told reporters.

Duda said it was very likely that Poland would request consultations under Article 4 at a meeting of the NATO alliance at 08:00 GMT on Wednesday. Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau summoned the Russian ambassador and “demanded immediate detailed explanations”, the foreign ministry said.

Many global leaders are attending the Group of 20 summit on the Indonesian island of Bali, and US President Joe Biden, who is in Bali, said he had already spoken on the phone with Duda.

Biden told Duda that Washington has an “ironclad commitment to NATO” and will support Poland’s investigation, the White House said after the call.

A group including Biden, the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held an early morning discussion on the situation and loss of life. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was also in attendance although Japan is not a member of NATO.

  • Why Muhammadu Buhari will back Osinbajo

Why Muhammadu Buhari will back Osinbajo

On December 2, 2018, President Muhammadu Buhari made a profound statement during a meeting with Nigerians in Poland. It was the height of conspiracy about whether or not he was cloned and Nigerians in Diaspora felt the need to clear the air on the matter, so they asked him.

Here’s how he responded: “A lot of people hoped that I was dead. Poor Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, even he had to deal with the rumours—Some people reached out to him to consider them to be his Vice President because they assumed I was dead. That embarrassed him a lot; we discussed it when he visited me while I was convalescing. I can assure you all that this is the real me. Later this month I will celebrate my 76th birthday. And I’m still going strong,” he said.

Buhari’s response reverberated from Poland to Nigeria and indeed across the world. Loyalty had reached a new height and Prof. Osinbajo is the architect. Not many knew how loyal the deputy was to his master and how much he protected his interest. Those who had approached the then Acting President to become his Vice President were thoroughly ashamed of themselves.

And this is one of many reasons why Nigerians are wondering why President Muhammadu Buhari has not endorsed his loyal, hardworking, competent and patriotic deputy, but again, the style and strategy of the President is very different.

Just as we have presidential candidates awash the APC today, we had so many twist and turns leading to the national convention. Many names were thrown up as the favourite and the acting committee was throwing all sorts of fireworks into the ring including court cases but the President knew his choice and he waited until it was the right time.

In his Channels TV interview, Buhari refrained from naming who his successor was, his response was quite cryptic. He said: “No, I wouldn’t say because he may be eliminated if I mention. I better keep it,” the President said with a wry smile.

For many Nigerians it’s a no-brainer that President Buhari picks his successor, in fact, that is a hallmark of successful leaders but in doing so, the President must have to consider a few things which are dear to many Nigerians but more importantly Nigerians need someone with capacity to execute.

Many will agree with me that President Buhari is keeping the name of his successor close to his chest but one thing that he must consider most is that Nigerians need a patriot. Someone who is not thinking about enriching himself, family, friends and associates but someone who is dedicated to enriching all Nigerians as much as he can.

Those closest to the President will be trying to sway him, they will be putting up names that best suits them and a few others. They will be putting up names of those who can help them to continue to hold Nigeria to ransom but what Nigerians want is leader that will be father to all.

A leader that can speak the global language and who has already earned global respect. A leader who is keeping up with the times and who understands the importance of technology, human capital development and leadership.

A detribalized leader who will put Nigeria first and will always act on behalf of Nigeria and Nigerians on all local and international issues. Whosoever President Buhari picks as his successor will be ultimate legacy and I think he will want to leave a lasting legacy.

For those lurking around the President and who have decided to throw all sorts of people up, to extent that they are buying Expression of Interest and Nomination forms under all sorts of groups, I hope the President is not deceived or confused by their antics.

Just like Buhari, Nigeria deserves a very popular candidate amongst the citizen. One that can go to the South South and the reception will be wild. A candidate that can visit the North East and the people will be chasing after his bus; a candidate that will go to the North Central and shake hands with the citizens; a candidate that will dress in the regalia of the South East and communicate with them and they will feel renewed hopes; a candidate that is the toast of the youths in the South West and of course a candidate that turns heads in the North West because of his intelligence, diligence and dedication.

Sentiments aside, that candidate is Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, a loyal, dependable and reliable deputy to President Muhammadu Buhari.
