Police spokesman, Adejobi nabs officers extorting motorists on highway

The spokesman of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) Muyiwa Adejobi has narrated how he drove into police officers extorting motorists along the Lagos-Ibadan Road.

He shared the update on his X account while replying to a tweet about the Forces’ efforts to rid the agency of corruption.

I personally caught some policemen yesterday while driving along the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway. The DPO has been asked to bring them to Abuja. Then we know what to do. It’s disheartening to see some of our men extorting Nigerians. I feel sad, and I don’t like it because it’s a sort of oppression,” he wrote on Monday night.

“The IGP has made it clear that supervisory officers would henceforth be held responsible. The IGP has also directed senior officers to rebuke and confront any of our men who misbehave irrespective of his jurisdiction.

Every officer has the right and power to punish any erring personnel anywhere in Nigeria. We can not continue to overlook their misdeeds. This is the sacrifice and the bold step we must take.”

Adejobi on Twitter said: “I have forwarded to the CP FCT to act, please. But if it’s true, the pastor will have a case to answer. AK47?? It falls under prohibited Firearms in Nigeria, and no one bears it except an officer of the law, and not all of them have the right, selected sec operatives, but no individual has the right to bear it. The FCT police command will investigate it, I trust the new CP FCT, CP Sadiq… it’s shocking.”

Insecurity: 20,000 new officers joining police before end of 2022 – IGP

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, says Nigeria’s security agencies are making headway in the fight against banditry.

He made the comment on Wednesday when he visited the Kwara Police Command in Ilorin.

“The police is not fighting alone,” the police chief explained. “All other security agencies, in synergy, are fighting the bandits, including the military, which is leading the war and we’re winning.”

According to the IGP, President Muhammadu Buhari has given approval for the recruitment of more police officers to boost the fight against crime in the country.

“The president has given approval for us to employ 10,000 [police personnel] every year for six years. We have started but we have not done so for 2020. So, we are doing [recruiting] for 2020 and 2021 between now and 2021 [year end]. Their training is for six months.

“So, we are expecting to increase our strength by 20,000, latest by the end of 2022,” he added.

While assuring the police operatives that their welfare will be taken care of, the IGP called on them to be dedicated to duty and show professionalism.

“I am here to tell you that there is no problem about the Nigerian police that I don’t know about. But there is hope at the end of the tunnel,” he said.

“Is it our welfare that we are not working on? We are working on our welfare. Is it the logistics to do the work? We are working on it. Is it our place of abode, accommodation? We are working on it!”

  • Nigeria deserves a trustworthy Police Force – Gbajabiamila

Nigeria deserves a trustworthy Police Force – Gbajabiamila

    By Emman Ovuakporie

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila on Thursday said Nigerians deserve a police force that they can trust.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports that the speaker disclosed this at an ongoing public hearing on two Police laws that had to be amended to make the Nigerian police more functional, organized by the Police Affairs Committee, chaired by Hon Usman Kumo.

Gbajabiamila said the bills are timely as they will go a long way in reforming the Nigerian police Force.

He said “a Bill for an Act to Repeal the Police Service Commission Act and Enact the Police Service Commission Bill, 2020 to strengthen the Commission to be more Functional in its Operations, and for Related Matters (HB. 1112); and A Bill for an Act to Provide for Establishment of the National Institute for Police Studies, to Provide for Administration and Management of the Institute and Determining the Standard of Knowledge and Skills to be Acquired by the Personnel of the Institute, and for Related Matters (HB.1048).

“Reforming the Nigerian security architecture, with specific emphasis on our policing system and law enforcement, is one of the cardinal commitments of the 9th House of Representatives. “It is a commitment against which our tenure in office will be measured. When the time for assessment and judgment comes, we must not be found wanting. The Nigerian people deserve a Police Force that they can trust. They deserve a Police Force that acts within the limits of the law and respects the rule of law. We will do everything in our power to meet these expectations.

“During this public hearing, these Bills that we will review are good faith efforts at addressing the statutory deficits that have hindered the effective operation of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) over the years. Beyond statutory reform, there is a need for concerted efforts to address recruitment and training, funding and operational priorities. These issues are the responsibility of the Police Force administration and the executive. Nonetheless, the 9th House of Representatives will be part of those conversations around effecting changes in this regard, and we will do our utmost to ensure that everything that ought to be done is done and done right.

“The Police Service Commission (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2020 is the first attempt to institute an independent system for holding erring Police Officers to account for abuses of power and related misconduct in office. There are, let me quickly say, a zillion or gazillion good policemen, in fact, a good majority of our policemen are gentlemen and officers, upstanding professionals but we all know the popular saying that a rotten egg can spoil the whole basket. We must attempt to weed out the few rotten eggs that seem to give the police force, men and women who lay their lives and put their lives out there on a daily for you and I and that is why we are taking this bill seriously. The Bill proposes changes to the composition of the Police Service Commission (PSC). It further proposes reorganising the Commission to be public-facing and able to receive and investigate complaints against Police Officers. This Bill will increase the minimum requirement for recruitment into the constabulary and allow for the recruitment of more qualified candidates into the Nigerian Police Force (NPF). These objectives are sacrosanct. The only question before us at this public hearing is how best to achieve them. Achieving them is non-negotiable, it is a roadmap on how to get there, that we are looking to address at this public hearing.

“I encourage all of you who have gathered here today to recognise that we are undertaking this assignment at a fraught time in our national history. We have a joint obligation to act in the public interest to restore faith in our security institutions and assure the Nigerian people that the government is still capable of meeting its first and highest obligation – to secure

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that Shogunle was a former head of the Police Public Complaint Unit while Badmos a former spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command and later the Zone Two Command.

A list purportedly submitted by the Presidential Panel on Police Reforms was Saturday afternoon posted online, including names and service numbers of 37 officers alleged to have been recommended for dismissal, demotion, or warning.

Spokesman for the PSC, Ikechukwu Ani, said the news of their dismissal could not be true since the Commission had not met.

“The Commission did not sit yesterday and I am not aware of any dismissal. The Commission meets officially before any decision is taken and it has not met,” he said.

In no time the list went viral online with people celebrating the alleged dismissal of Shogunle and Badmus who are active social media users and have in the past ran into conflicts with young people.

It was gathered their names might have entered the list because they were reprimanded at one point or the other.

A senior police officer said the report was fake wondering what the duo of Shogunle and Badmos might have done to warrant dismissal.

“Neither of them were in SARS. So, if they are talking about the dismissal of former SARS officers, they should not be among.

“It can’t be true. Maybe they were queried before and some type of punishments was allocated to them. Some punishments can be a very minor eg warning letter. Social media lies are too much. I am sure it isn’t dismissal for all the names on the list,” he said.
