Benue Assembly suspends 4 lawmakers over attempt to impeach Speaker

The Benue State House of Assembly has suspended the lawmaker representing Makurdi North, Alfred Berger; his Kian state constituency counterpart, Terna Shimawua; Cyril Ekong of Obi state constituency, and James Umoru, representing Apa state constituency for six months.

This, according to the House, followed an attempt to impeach the Speaker, Aondona Dajoh, on Thursday night.

The Majority Leader, Saater Tiseer, in a motion of urgent importance, moved for the suspension of the four lawmakers for attempting to unsettle the state assembly with what he said was a needless crisis.

Following the motion, the Speaker directed the Sergeant at Arms to lead the suspended lawmakers out of the chambers.

Dajoh also appointed Audu Elias as the new spokesperson of the House, following the suspension of Berger, who had held the position.

Why many politicians are joining APC – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has explained that the growing influx of politicians into the All Progressives Congress (APC) is a direct result of the party’s achievements in less than two years in office. He reassured Nigerians that this trend would not lead to a one-party state.

Speaking at the APC Renewed Hope Agenda Summit, held at the State House Conference Centre on Thursday, Tinubu addressed key figures including the party leadership, members of the National Working Committee, National Assembly leaders, and the Progressive Governors’ Forum, which includes 22 governors. During the event, all attendees reportedly backed his re-election bid, according to a statement by his spokesperson, Mr. Bayo Onanuga.

“A one-party state doesn’t align with democratic principles. We’re currently the party in power, delivering on the people’s expectations. Naturally, people are abandoning failing parties for one that offers solutions,” Tinubu said. “I’m pleased with our progress and confident that more will join us—that’s how politics works.”

He emphasized that Nigerians have the constitutional freedom to choose their political affiliations. “I appreciate everyone’s efforts. We’re only halfway into this journey that began 24 months ago,” Tinubu stated.

The President commended members of his cabinet for bravely pushing the vision of a better Nigeria and expressed gratitude to the National Assembly and APC leadership for their consistent support.

“We made a collective promise to tackle Nigeria’s challenges head-on—restoring trust, fostering prosperity, and reviving our economy. I’m proud to say our economic policies are beginning to yield results. Meaningful change is rarely easy, and tough choices are sometimes necessary for future gains.”

Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, the administration committed to addressing economic instability, enhancing national security, combating corruption, reforming governance, and alleviating poverty.

He criticized the previous foreign exchange system, calling it the root of corruption. “Take, for instance, the EFCC’s recovery of over 750 properties from a single individual. That speaks volumes,” he said.

Tinubu acknowledged the initial difficulties encountered since taking office in May 2023 but maintained that significant strides have been made through critical reforms.

“We’ve dismantled the arbitrage-prone multiple exchange rate regime and are introducing comprehensive tax reforms. These efforts are already drawing foreign direct investments, which will create jobs and improve living standards for our citizens,” he added.

The summit was convened to assess the administration’s progress over two years in key sectors of the economy. Tinubu noted that both domestic and international observers have commended the reforms focused on long-term national development.

  • Do children of politicians in power make sense? – Azu Ishiekwene

Do children of politicians in power make sense? – Azu Ishiekwene

It’s understandable if you have not paid attention. I can’t help noticing because minding other people’s business is a part of my job description. On Tuesday, the newspapers reported a spat between the children of two leading politicians, Mohammed Abubakar and Shamsudeen Bala Mohammed.

Mohammed and Shamsudeen are the children of Atiku and Bala. Atiku was Nigeria’s vice president, and Bala is the Bauchi State governor and chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum.

Both are ranking members of the main opposition, PDP, a party making as much effort to find its way as it is desperate to lose it. The tweetstorm between the children of these leaders has only piled on the party’s misery, and what lies ahead doesn’t look pretty, especially after the PDP governors’ meeting in Ibadan.

    Back story

The fight between both sons is the political equivalent in the music industry of the bitter sibling rivalry between Peter and Jude Okoye, siblings now dragging themselves publicly over royalty from their once famous band, P-Square. If PDP had any royalty left, it squandered it on the insatiable appetite of its leaders, who have eaten the present and future of the party.

Atiku’s son is accusing Governor Mohammed of stabbing his father in the back when he ran for the presidency in 2023. The governor’s son responded that nobody plays as dirty as Atiku, whom he accused of undermining his father’s bid for a second term in Bauchi.

The tweet rage has sparked discussions about how far the children of politicians in power should go to fight publicly for or against their parents’ political interests and whether or not such brawls hinder or help their parents’ political fortunes.

In another life, it would have been considered poor breeding for teenagers or young adults to insert themselves in a fight between adults.

For example, despite the fight-to-the-finish between MKO Abiola and military president General Ibrahim Babangida, who cancelled the 1993 presidential election won by Abiola, their children stayed mainly out of the fray. The equivalence of social media has changed all that.

    Born to rage

The pervasiveness of social media and its popularity, especially among teenagers and young adults, has increased the sense of agency among these groups and amplified their voices, however strident and deeply worrying they may get sometimes.

From the blogger and daughter of the famous Ibadan politician Kemi Olunloyo, who recently declared on her blog that she would have nothing to do with her family again after her father died, to Bashir, an unabashedly vile tweep and the son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, there is an emerging activism among the children of politicians. It’s a cross between rebellion and the search for identity or the process of becoming.

    The more you look

Does it make sense? Is it always an indication of parental values or a measure of the family’s stand on political issues? Neither Atiku Abubakar nor Bala Mohammed has weighed in yet. Even though their children’s public fight feels like a scene from “Sons of the Caliphate”, nothing they said was false. Perhaps, it was how and the speed of the venom that raised eyebrows.

Before the 2023 elections, when Atiku’s protégé and prominent traditional titleholder in Bauchi, Bello Kirfi, fell out with Bala, the latter (with former Speaker Yakubu Dogara) openly worked against Bala’s reelection. During the presidential primaries in Abuja, Bala ran against Atiku.

The proxy war between Atiku’s man, Kirfi, and Bala almost cost the governor his reelection, an offence the governor will not forgive. He was saved by the skin of his teeth and the support of former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and the G5, after which Mohammed stripped Kirfi of his traditional title.

    Rise of social media

Older adults who are used to nuanced, conservative methods of airing their grievances may be embarrassed, even offended, by the tweet brawl between Mohammed and Shamsudeen. Still, in the last two decades, we have seen that social media, the playground for teenagers and young adults, has also become a legitimate sphere of politics – and in the current Trumpoverse, it’s even a tool of diplomacy, thanks to US President Donald Trump.

But should blog posts, often typically lacking in depth and context, become the measure of what is truly important and enduring? Do they represent more than what they are – random outbursts of fleeting thoughts from entitled or angry tribes? Or do they teach us something we need to pay attention to?

    Price of feuds

Some years ago, Bobby Goodlatte took a stand on Twitter against his father, Bob, a Republican, whom he accused of “political grandstanding” that led to the sacking of an FBI agent Bobby described as “a patriot.” For that reason, he sided with a Democrat running against his father and used social media to mobilise votes for him.

We don’t even need to go far. In 2017, Moremi, daughter of Babafemi Ojudu, the former Special Adviser (Political Matters) to President Muhammadu Buhari, attacked the government, her father’s employer. Although she later apologised to her father, her action raised questions about who she was speaking for. Yet everyone knows it’s a generation that wears its emotions on its sleeve.

    Who pays?

Seyi, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who uses the handle @STinubu, last tweeted in May 2023. But his activities offline, which invariably become rich social media harvests, have generated no less interest than that of the more social-media active children of other politicians. Do these children’s actions, especially online, carry any significant political risk for their parents?

The answer is, sometimes. A 2020 media psychology study said, “When people believe they are not alone in their cause, it encourages them to take action. For the children of well-known or newsworthy parents in the contentious political arena, their actions also become newsworthy by virtue of proximity to their parents and the unceasing demand for news content that will attract audience attention.”

The potential impact of such feuds could range from damage to political image to loss of credibility arising from a perception of lack of parental authority and a house divided against itself.

High-profile family disputes or squabbles amongst the children of political heavyweights can amplify the controversy and undermine the politician’s agenda. An example is the spectacular case of Bukola and Gbemisola in the Saraki dynasty. In cases where such children are viewed as potential successors, it could haunt them and fracture support.

    “Sins” of the children

Even when children are old enough to answer their own names, in largely conservative societies, the “sins” of the children may weigh heavily on how their parents are perceived.

The tweet by Bashir El-Rufai, for example, that the killings in Southern Kaduna would continue until the attacks on Fulani herdsmen ceased was considered inflammatory and insensitive. It was also deemed a reflection of his father’s politics as governor for eight years.

Seyi Tinubu’s offline comment that his father is the greatest president in Nigeria’s history raised a firestorm on social media. Whatever the cost of his comment, he is unlikely to be deterred, and his actions will continue to enrich social media content in the days ahead.

As we move closer to 2027, the actions of the children of newsworthy politicians will be a valuable lens by which we try to view and understand the political space. We’ll wait to see how much this currency will shape the future.

Banditry: Desperate politicians envious of Tinubu, aiding banditry in North West -Group

Some supporters of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the north, have said the incessant banditry attacks in the north west region could be traced to some “desperate politicians” who are bent on frustrating the administration of the President.

Coming under the aegis of Asiwaju Social Network (ASoN), North West Zone, the group warned those it described as “some highly placed northern leaders who mean no well or those who want to blackmail Asiwaju’s administration” to desist forwith, for the sake of the lives of the people who are on the line.

The statement signed by Hon. Lukman Hamza and Comrade Aliyu Zuberu, President and Secretary, respectively, the group also tasked the security agencies, especially the secret police, to do due diligence to unmask those elements who are formenting troubles to win cheap political points.

“We must sound this warning and make it abundantly clear, that, those who are formenting troubles just to win cheap political points must desist forthwith. Some highly placed northern leaders who mean no well or those who want to blackmail Asiwaju’s administration must take note that it’s people’s lives they are playing with.

“Elections have come and gone and those whom God has placed in positions of authority, we must support them to succeed. And if God placed in position of authority and you are using it to cause troubles and make people lose their lives, all because you want to prove a point or win cheap political points against about public office holder, Almighty Allah is watching you and it will soon be the turn of your family members and relatives, if you don’t stop playing politics with people’s lives.

“Nobody stays in political office forever, everything has an expiry date and the people shall he here to remind those who think they’re powerful today, about all their atrocities while fighting cold war with their opponents. Even if you’re currently enjoying immunity now, it will expire and you must account for every evil done under your watch.

“We at Asiwaju Social Network, North West Zone, invite the security agencies, especially the DSS and other intelligent gathering formations, to keep tabs about the happenings in the State and neighbouring states, and let those who think they are powerful, those brains behind the insurgency and banditry, be exposed”, the group submitted.

The call is coming on the heels of incessant banditry attacks, especially the kidnap of over 50 women and girls in Zamfara State by bandits during the weekend.

The bandits conducted a house-to-house search and abducted mostly women and children in the Kakin-Dawa in the Gidan Goga district of Maradun Local Government Area of the state.

It was said that, the gunmen invaded the community on motorcycles at about 1:30 a.m. and picked residents from house to house, most of whom are married women and girls to unknown destination, despite the presence of local security guards.

A similar attack occurred in September, where the bandits abducted over 40 persons at Janboka, a community in the same Maradun LGA.

Maradun is the hometown of the Minister of State for Defence, Mr. Bello Matawalle, who is the immediate past governor of the state.

New breed politicians set to take over Anambra PDP

The self rediscovery efforts of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP in Anambra State will be taken up one more notch this weekend as the members gather in Awka to choose new leadership for the party.

Political observers have predicted a clean sweep by a set of brand new untainted hands, a clear departure from yesterday’s pattern where discredited top.brass stakeholders handpick and foist their surrogate on the party.

So two main bloc appear to have clearly emerged. While no one appeared keen on naming members or actual power bases of the blocs, our ear-to-the-ground investigation named young breed, Barristers Amechi Onowu and Ikechukwu Adilieje as leading the favorite group.

Onowu, described as a quiet smooth operator is contesting for the State chairmanship position which was reportedly zoned to Anambra Central zone.

Adilieje, who is said to be a very discreet mobilizer, organizer, and unifier is said to be leading and reaching out to the key critical stakeholders of the party to birth a set of new faces, hands and minds to return the once powerful PDP to winning ways.

So far, they have all been working vehemently behind the scenes to carry the day and to ensure that those associated with the lethargic past did not return or be allowed to keep the party on its knees as witnessed all these years.

When spoken to on the phone last night Adilieje admitted he’s interested in seeing Onowu, himself and other equally progressive minds step in “to rekindle the ever present fire in bones and soul of the PDP members in the state.”

According to him, everything is set to return the party to top reckoning in the state as the ruling party.

He urged the members, especially the delegates to this weekend’s State Congress to start the journey to next year’s governorship success with th9se they elect to take charge of the helm of affairs of the party for the next four years now.

Surprisingly, it appears no one really want to say much about the second bloc as an official met at the Udoka Housing Estate office of the party described them as “being sponsored by those who rendered the party unsevicable and decrepit”, whatever that means.

The official who refused to give out his identity pointed out also that no reasonable member of the party want to associate with those who collected so from the party, cleared the funds, carted away vehicles, funiture and left huge arrears of unpaid rent, salaries and other statutory bills.

According to him, please let’s elect officers who are in love with the state, the party and her members’ progress.

Sultan: Miyetti Allah issues strong warning to politicians

Nigerian politicians have been advised by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, to stop playing around with sultanate institutions.

The request was made in a statement on Saturday in Abuja by Alhaji Baba Othman-Ngelzarma, the National President of MACBAN.

Othman-Ngelzarma emphasised how important it is to defend and maintain the Sultanate’s institution inside the nation.

He stated that lawmakers who were meant to be focusing their energies on advancing good administration should not be playing around with the institution of the Sultanate, which has existed for more than 200 years.

The venerable Sultan, who represents Islamic authority in Nigeria, was allegedly under fear of being dehumanised, a move that Othman-Ngelzarma found unacceptable

He said, ”We believe protecting and preserving the institution of the Sultanate is a cardinal responsibility of every right thinking personality in the country.

”We call upon the Sokoto State Government, especially the legislature, to tread softly and do all that is necessary to preserve and protect the institution that represents an all important ideology that created it.

”Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, is worried by the media reports alleging that the Sokoto Government intends to whittle down the powers of his Eminence the Sultan, Alhaji Saad Abubakar III.”

He said that MACBAN was strongly in support of the Sultan and that they thought he deserved more because he had demonstrated the ability to respect justice and equity in all of his dealings.

”This is evident in his efforts in propagating religious and ethnic tolerance in Nigeria among diverse groups.

”His background as a military man, his resoluteness to speak the truth and his standing for the poor and underprivileged in spite of being an aristocrat makes him a model for leaders to emulate,” he added.

Delta tribunal verdict: Respect people’s choice, Funkekeme tells politicians

The Senior Policy Adviser to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Hon. Funkekeme Solomon, has applauded the Delta State Governorship Tribunal which today upheld the March 18, 2023 election of the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

Solomon who was the director general of the State PDP campaign organization and masterminded the emergence of Oborevwori, said the clear victory of Hon Oborevwori who won 21 of the 25 local government areas in the state has rendered any attempt by politicians to upturn the result seem like an attempt to use the courts to carry out a coup.

Solomon said the litigation arising from the Delta State gubernatorial election was a mere academic exercise.

“Governor Oborevwori won fair and square. It is only fitting and logical that the Tribunal has affirmed it. Anyone that seeks to rule the people must learn to respect the people’s choice at any time. The court is not an instrument for attempting to subvert the will of the people. I commend the judges for their decision. They have, by the judgment, reinforced our people’s confidence in the electoral process and in the judiciary as an unbiased arbiter”, Solomon, a one-time Deputy Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, said.

He called on Olorogun Ovie Omo-Agege, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election to discontinue any further litigation and let Deltans engage with the reality of Oborevwori’s administration.

Solomon assured that despite the challenges by opposition parties to his victory, Oborevwori has remained focused on governance and has already hit the ground running with remarkable infrastructural projects and will deliver more to the state.

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno has alleged that he’s been threatened by politicians in the State.

Eno said he received threats from the political class to share money or risk forfeiting his second term.

He disclosed this while addressing journalists in Uyo, the State capital on Saturday.

According to Eno: “I have received a lot of threats from the political class that I won’t do a second term.

“I am putting money in rural development because a good first term is better than a useless second term.

“I don’t want to put more money in one person’s hands to the detriment of the 7.9 million population.”

Eno called on politicians to give him time till December to put the structure of governance on the right track in the State.

    NPF denies withdrawing police aides

The Nigeria Police Force has refutes report of withdrawing police aides from certain politicians and their relatives.

Force public relations officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi says the report is fake and did not emanate from the force or any of its formations.

CSP Adejobi further emphasized that, the signal deviates from the Police telegraphic message structure and standard as the signal bears the signature of a Deputy Commissioner of Police, which is very unusual as signal of such will typically be signed by an Assistant Commissioner of Police, who heads such formations, and not a higher-ranking officer.

Meanwhile, the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun has ordered a thorough investigation, to unravel the source, while assuring that appropriate action will be taken against those responsible for drafting and disseminating the said signal.
