Hollande welcomes Macron to Elysee Palace

Macron, a 39-year-old centrist, arrived at the Elysee Palace in central Paris in a motorcade and walked down the red carpet under light rain to be greeted by Hollande for his inauguration.

The new president’s wife Brigitte, a 64-year-old who was his high school drama teacher, arrived separately for the ceremony wearing a light blue Louis Vuitton outfit.

A week after his victory over far-right leader Marine Le Pen in a tumultuous election, Macron will have a private meeting with Hollande at which he will be given the codes to launch France’s nuclear weapons.

He will then attend a ceremony in front of hundreds of politicians and invited guests at which the official election results will be read out.

At the end of the formalities, a 21-gun salute is to ring out from the Invalides military hospital on the other side of the River Seine.

Macron will then be driven to the Arc de Triomphe to lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier.

Security was tight with around 1,500 police officers deployed near the presidential palace and the nearby Champs Elysees avenue and surrounding roads were blocked off.

After a formal lunch, Macron will visit Paris’s town hall, a traditional stop for any new French president in his “host” city.

Macron’s first week will be busy. On Monday, he is expected to reveal the closely-guarded name of his prime minister, before flying to Berlin to meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

It is virtually a rite of passage for French leaders to make their first European trip to meet the leader of the other half of the so-called “motor” of the EU.

In his inaugural address, Macron pledged to work to overcome divisions in society which had been shown by the presidential election campaign and seek to build a strong France that was sure of itself in the world.

“The division and fractures in our society must be overcome,” said the 39-year-old centrist who was elected on May 7 after beating the far right leader Marine Le Pen following a bitter campaign that was dominated by France’s role in Europe and which blew apart the traditional party structure in France.

“The world and Europe need more than ever France, and a strong France, which speaks out loudly for freedom and solidarity,” Macron declared.

He said under his administration the labor market would be made more flexible, business-friendly conditions would be created to help companies function and “innovation” would be at the heart of his action as president.

Youngest president ever, Macron moves to Elysee Palace today

Emmanuel Macron will be inaugurated as France’s youngest ever president today, succeeding President Francois Hollande, the Socialist whose five years in power was plagued by stubborn unemployment and bloody terror attacks.

The ceremony will take place at 0800 GMT.

Macron, a 39-year-old centrist, will face daunting challenges to rejuvenate the economy and breathe new life into the beleaguered EU.

After ascending the red carpet at the Elysee Palace in central Paris, Macron and Hollande will have a private meeting in the president’s office where Macron will be given the codes to launch France’s nuclear weapons.

Hollande is clearly delighted at the election of the former investment banker, who scored a clear victory over far-right candidate Marine Le Pen on May 7.

The current president launched Macron’s political career, plucking him from the world of investment banking to be an advisor and then his economy minister.

“I am not handing over power to a political opponent, it’s far simpler,” Hollande said on Thursday.

Security will be tight with around 1,500 police officers deployed near the presidential palace and the nearby Champs Elysees avenue and surrounding roads will be blocked off.

At the end of the ceremony, a 21-gun salute will ring out from the Invalides military hospital on the other side of the River Seine.

After a formal lunch, Macron will visit Paris’s town hall, a traditional stop for any new French president in his “host” city.

He will be accompanied by his wife Brigitte, his 64-year-old former drama teacher whose romance with the new president, and their 25-year age gap, has already generated media interest around the world.

On Monday, Macron is expected to reveal the closely-guarded name of his prime minister, before flying to Berlin to meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

It is virtually a rite of passage for French leaders to make their first European trip to meet the leader of the other half of the so-called “motor” of the EU.

Pro-EU Macron wants to push for closer cooperation to help the bloc overcome the imminent departure of Britain, another of its most powerful members.

He intends to press for the creation of a parliament and budget for the eurozone.

Merkel welcomed Macron’s decisive 32-point victory over Le Pen, saying he carried “the hopes of millions of French people and also many in Germany and across Europe”.

In June, Macron faces what the French media are calling a “third round of the presidential election” when the country elects a new parliament in a two-round vote.

The new president needs an outright majority to be able to enact his ambitious reform agenda.

The year-old political movement “Republique en Marche” (Republic on the Move, REM) that he formed to launch his presidential bid intends to field candidates in virtually every constituency in the country.

It unveiled 428 of its 577 candidates this week, saying it wants to bring fresh faces into the National Assembly lower house of parliament.

Half of them have never held elected office, including a retired female bullfighter and a star mathematician, and half of them are women.

Macron met many of the candidates gathered at a Paris museum on Saturday and told them they had an “immense responsibility”.

“You are the new faces of French politics,” some of those present quoted him as saying.

Macron won one of the most unpredictable French elections in modern history marked by scandal, repeated surprises and a last-minute hacking attack on his campaign.

Just as campaigning ended, hundreds of thousands of emails and documents stolen from his campaign were dumped online, leading Macron to call it an attempt at “democratic destabilisation”.

US authorities have said they believe Russian hackers were behind the attack.

The election saw voters reject France’s two traditional political forces of left and right. Their candidates were eliminated in the first round.

Unpopular Hollande was the first to bow to the rebellious mood in December as he became the first sitting president not to seek re-election in the French fifth republic, founded in 1958.

  • Asiwaju Tinubu: Between Poli-tricks and Power

Asiwaju Tinubu: Between Poli-tricks and Power

    By Idoko Ainoko

Asiwaju Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu is really the odious, typical Nigerian politician. All is fair, if it is fair with him and his clan of Western sycophants and elsewhere.

Everything must be rubbish and messy, anytime he misses his political steps. Nigeria should go into convulsion because one individual by the identity of Tinubu has headache last night over a political meeting that never ended in his favour. The lust for power is crazily pursued.

To say the obvious, Nigerian politicians can spring surprises anytime they deem fit like now that President Muhammedu Buhari is recuperating from an ailment. Homes have stopped functioning; offices have closed in Nigeria; farms have stopped churning out food; markets have closed in Nigeria.

What else? Schools too should have closed; Law chambers and courts have also gone on sabbatical leave. And of course, roads in Nigeria, linking diverse regions and communities have closed in the thinking of the Tinubus. And they are very few; but equally very loud and clandestinely pushy.

All calculations are geared towards who controls the strings of power at the center; not necessarily to offer service to Nigerian masses, but to nourish their family fiefdoms.

Generally, Nigerian politicians never lack jobs all season. They are always busy 24/7, scheming and plotting in empty fields. But the sane ones among them have stopped campaigning for 2019. Yet, there are also those who run riot about politics anytime, anywhere. They are the wise ones.

They claim God Almighty has endowed them with enough political wisdom. They want to govern Nigeria or remote-control the leadership of this potentially great black nation, to the extent the Great ancient Greek philosophers would grovel before them. They are present in all political dispensations as the back and the dark shadows.

But since President Buhari etched his sound leadership footprints on Nigeria, these politicians now only giggle their ambitions in the bedroom, with wives and children. They don’t speak about it in public anymore, lest they be haunted by known and unknown foes.

If they must speak publically, the words are carefully selected, rehearsed and measured, lest they derail shamefully. It usually comes in the colour of press statements. But in it, they bite poisonously and blow the air at the same time like the proverbial African rat, which steals the comfort of your night.

But behind the scenes, they act so venomously, like hungry lions. They prod, prop and instigate acolytes to go ahead and rock the boat. They have just found a new fish in the soup. President Buhari is sick; he is being treated and in his usual frankness has pleaded with Nigerians to allow him enough time to recover sufficiently to serve them better.

This simple and inevitable plea from an innocent, sick leader has sparked deadly emotions; intrigues and permutations. Lethal missiles have been hurled at him.

Some leaders spoke instantly; others procrastinated, like Asiwaju Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, until yesterday. But while hiding in his cocoon, he unleashed his attack dogs after a detailed briefing about the civilian coup, he intends to execute in unseating President Buhari.

He watched his minions navigate and exploit a human being’s health condition for selfish reasons or lust for power. Please, forget that it concerns Nigeria’s leader, President Buhari. It could have been any other person; Tinubu inclusive.

So, Tinubu waited and when he discovered his antics anchored through cronies failed to create the expected impact, he now painfully issued a belated press statement feverishly denouncing everything that has taken place. It included the grand plot to influence the National Assembly (NASS) to unlawfully unseat President Buhari.

He denied all. He profusely denied that Nigeria is administered by a cabal, as voiced by his undercover loyalists. He praised everything about President Buhari’s administration, fooling himself that it would placate Nigerian masses. He sought to distance himself from the plot and at the same time, covertly resurrect the deep-seated hatred and animosities against President Buhari.

But President Buhari has defeated Asiwaju Tinubu before now and he will continue to defeat him alive or dead. It’s needless to chronicle it. But remember the Ondo state APC governorship primary election saga and the eventual victory of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, who dimmed the bad outing of Tinubu’s altar ego, Chief Olusola Oke who eventually contested the guber polls in AD, but lost.

No doubt, Asiwaju Tinubu knows the history of President Buhari’s ascension to the Presidency. What he has forgotten in a hurry is to intimate his kinsmen, brothers, loyalists and political associates that Sai Baba, as President Buhari is fondly called by admirers is a leader of destiny. Like the Holy Scriptures have admonished in Isaiah 54:17; “No weapon that is formed against thee ,shall prosper. And every tongue that shall rise against you in judgment… shall be condemned.”

    So, Tinubu’s press statement was so despicable and further supported the evil concealed in him against President Buhari. If not, why would Tinubu swallow his pride by uttering this phrase about President Buhari;

“His policies have begun to bear fruit. We are moving out of recession and toward the long-term reshaping of the national economy. Given the complex menu of problems he has faced, President Buhari has done well in a tough situation.”

    While the echoes resonate, he regains consciousness and slams back at a leader he conceals hatred by subtle instigation of the “masses” he has persuaded and seemingly empowered to exploit the President’s health condition, Thus;

“Some have done so for their own selfish reasons. These people shall be found out in time. There are many who have done so out of sincere concern for the President. These people should not be condemned for their heartfelt concern.”

It’s an irritating inconsistency. It is political mudslinging yet to be decoded by Nigeria’s political wise men. It is the worse assault on the spirit and soul of humanity. President Buhari may not necessarily be at the receiving end, but this doublespeak from a close political ally reminds one of a similar political episode in Burkina Faso between military Head of State, Captain Thomas Sankera and his closest friend, Blaise Campaore.

The sweet moments they shared as friends in the army; the gists in social circles and the power play and the gangs led by Campaore who toppled Sankera’s ruling military junta. Then, suddenly, sunshine turned into darkness and some mystic words as gory as “ouster”, “topple” and “assassination.” Campaore led a gang in the military that assassinated Captain Thomas Sankera, one of Africa’s finest dictators and seized power. If this is Asiwaju Tinubu’s plans, it is pretty funny and it would never work. It’s not Buhari’s fate. President Buhari has jetted out for medical attention again, largely due to the pressures the likes of Tinubu mounted on him, by refusing to allow him time to rest and recover.

So, for Tinubu to have stimulated his gang against President Buhari and waited to see how it plays out, only to comment belatedly, singing the praises like a pupil whipped to recite nursery rhymes is no remedy and very funny.

One Lawyer Ebun-olu Adegboruwa writing from Lagos in a press statement titled, “Let Us Paralyse The System,” called on Nigerians to totally shut down Nigeria until President Buhari resigns. The canvassed mass action from Nigerians against President Buhari is nothing more than his plea for time to recuperate from ill-health. It was a lonely dance of the insane; something very comical and humorous. Nigerians ignored him. He was the last forerunner in the game and his epitaph to Nigerians sounded too empty and he has ceased to speak further till this moment.

Before him, the likes of human rights lawyer, Femi Falana had rocked the boat. They threatened fire and brimstone if President Buhari fails to relinquish power. Falana’s fraternity with Tinubu is not in doubt. And they feel the best way to ascend to power is through the backdoor. Buhari must be pushed out. It’s like a script is being acted and planned in stages. Soon, Nigerians would demand from the canvassers for President Buhari’s illegal exit from office what they have done to the President of the masses. And it’s going to be very soon.

To appease Northerners who his hatchet men have insulted, unduly pressurized and offended by overblowing the trumpet over President Buhari’s health condition, Asiwaju Tinubu who has numerous chieftaincy titles in his native Yoruba descent signed the press statement, supporting it with a Northern chieftaincy title, the Jagaban Borgu from Borgu Emirate in Niger state. But Tinubu and his soul mates should understand in clear terms that Nigerians know these tricks, no matter how veiled.

‘I cannot be a politician’- Sound Sultan declares

Popular Nigerian singer and actor , Sound Sultan has stated that he can never go into politics despite the fact that his music takes a look at political issues.

The Jagbanjantis singer told NAN that he desires to help youths facilitate their goals through the tool of his music.

“I want to help the youth facilitate their goals with my music, I want them to draw inspiration from me for them to achieve their dreams and not mislead them with my songs. I want to bring my wealth of experience to youths by reaching out to them,” the musician said.

“Music is a powerful tool and we need to use the tool to educate and not destroy and if we use it wrongly, it becomes a weapon, so why not use it wisely.

“Musicians should impact the lives of their listeners and not get their mood corrupted. So, we have to be careful about what we dish out.

“My music is passing a message not just the social aspect of it, it is meant to talk about politics, society and sometimes self-confidence.

“Music is powerful in transforming the society and though I talk a lot about politics, I can’t be a politician.

“My newly released album which is `Out of the Box’ will take me to schools to sensitise students about thinking outside the box and teaching them life choices.

“Out of the Box is my seventh album and I will use it to advise against wrong choices” he said.

My father didn’t support me joining politics initially – Folajimi Mohammed

A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Folajimi Mohammed (representing APC Ikeja 1 constituency), says he did not ride on his father’s shoulders into politics.

The legislator, who is the son of Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, spoke to an audience at the “Unstuck Conference 2017“on Sunday in Lagos.

The lawmaker was one of the young panelists who shared their success stories at the motivational conference with the theme, “From Stress to Success“.

He attributed his political sojourn to his strong will, determination and bravery, with only a very little of his father`s influence.

Mohammed said that his father, initially, was not favourably disposed to his decision and so he had to find other ways of accomplishing his mission.

“I told myself I had to find other ways to achieve my goal even if my father won`t support me.

“So, I was going to meet people and telling them of my intention to contest as a lawmaker in the state. Gradually, I was getting support and I even raised money from my supporters to fund the project.

“There was a time I was even told to step down from contesting because they said it wasn`t my time. I encountered these problems and more. But these problems were not enough to stop me.

“By the time I put everything in place, it was too late for my father to stop me. Those who say I became a lawmaker in Ikeja because of my father`s name do not know the story.

“It was a story of stress, struggles, determination, and focus, but I thank God for where I am today; I thank the people for believing in me, and my father for his late support,” he said.

Mohammed urged young people to set goals for themselves and pursue them passionately until they brought them into fruition.

The lawmaker told the audience that the road to success was always strewn with stones and pebbles, but advised youths to brave the odds to achieve their life dreams.

  • I’m an authority in politics, whatever I say must come to pass – Fayose

I’m an authority in politics, whatever I say must come to pass – Fayose

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has said he remains an authority in Nigerian political landscape and this attests to why his ‘prophecies’ has never failed to pass.

Fayose said he is not afraid of anyone and will continue to speak his mind without fear of intimidation of harrassement.

Speaking with The Punch, Fayose said: “Many have been silent now for the fear of the unknown. I’m the longest serving governor; I served under former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo; Goodluck Jonathan and Buhari. So I’m an experienced governor. This is why when I say things, they happen like that. Most of the things I say happen.

“Some people in the APC are praising me for saying the truth always. They can’t talk. Courage is a virtue from God. Fearlessness is a virtue from God. If you don’t want to die, why are you a governor? People only want the benefits of the office, not the pains of office. I have nothing personal against anybody: I speak my mind and let the devil be ashamed.

“I’m not their mate when it comes to politics: I’m a professor of politics. I’m an authority.”

When asked for his opinion on Senator Buruji Kashamu’s comments on his emergence as chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors forum, Fayose chose to show “maturity”.

“I will restrain myself from saying things that would further cause troubles within the party. I want to show maturity.

“If Senator Buruji Kashamu has anything against that, he should go to court. He knows how to go to court.”

“I don’t want to go to the senate, so when they are talking in the Senate, Buruji Kashamu should pay attention to it and not issues of governors. It is in the wisdom of governors,” Fayose said.

  • I’ll play politics till I die, James Ibori declares

Former Delta State Governor, James Onanefe Ibori has declared his intention to stage a comeback on the Nigerian political scene.

Ibori declared this on Tuesday in an interview with Reuters after his court hearing in London.

Ibori who was governor of Delta State from 1999 to 2007 said his involvement in politics was for the good of his people, adding that he was ready to lay down his life.

In Ibori’s words: “What happens in African politics – you are in it until you die.

“I am a politician; I will always be a politician. I play the politics in my party and in my country for the good of my people.”

TheNewsGuru.com recalls that Ibori was released from Her Majesty’s Huntercombe Prison near Nuffield in Oxfordshire, England in December 2016 after serving a 13 year jail term.

The former governor had earlier disclosed that he would be returning to the country in a “matter of days.”

Ibori’s media aide, Tony Eluemunor, made the disclosure in a statement on Tuesday.

The statement which reads in part says, “After all the speculations over when Chief James Onanefe Ibori will return to Nigeria, Ibori himself has now confirmed that he would be homeward bound very soon.

“As soon as possible, may be in a matter of days.

“Dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s in briefing his lawyers may be the only thing standing between Ibori now and his journey to Nigeria.

“For instance, there will be mention of the Ibori London case this week Friday at the Southwark London court for the judge to be fully informed on what is happening with the disclosure process and to ascertain if everybody convicted in the Ibori and related cases will be appealing.”

  • Southern Kaduna Crisis: Buhari, El-Rufai playing politics with peoples’ lives – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has said the wanton killing of Christians by herdsmen in Southern Kaduna has continued unabated as a result of the shabby response and attention President Muhammadu Buhari and the Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai accorded the cries of the hapless victims.

The party was reacting to a recent statement credited to the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity (SSA), Garba Shehu, on a television programme where he was quoted as saying that the killings in Southern Kaduna ‎was partly the fault of the PDP because it was the only Senatorial District in the North West with PDP Senator.

Recall that TheNewsGuru.com had reported the Kaduna State Governor as saying that all those behind the killings will be properly tried and punished according to law.

In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye and obtained by TheNewsGuru.com on Monday, the party said: “We are baffled that such a callous, irresponsible and insensitive statement could come from a person who speaks for the President of Nigeria.

“This shows the extent to which every issue in the Country today is viewed from the APC’s and the Presidency’s extremely narrow and jaundiced partisan political prism.

“Is Garba Shehu inferring that the hapless people of southern Kaduna were singled out for genocide because they elected a PDP senator? Or that the People invited such mindless violence upon themselves by choosing to be different in a sea of APC domination?”

“It is high time those in authority learned that we cannot reduce everything to partisan politics. You do not play politics with the lives of millions of people. That’s exactly what APC Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir el Rufai and President Buhari have been doing with the lives of the people of Southern Kaduna.

“Beyond politics, we are all accountable to God almighty. We once again call for an international inquiry into the Southern Kaduna massacre. We have little faith that those at the helm of affairs at the State and National levels will do justice in the matter.”

Recall also that the TheNewsGuru.com had reported that the governor had begged the Methodist prelate Dr. Samuel Chukwuemeka Kanu Uche on Thursday not to relocate the church over the wanton killings saying his government would provide another land for the church and also improve the security of lives and properties in the state.

  • Urhobo of Niger Delta in political wilderness again – Etakibuebu

Urhobo of Niger Delta in political wilderness again – Etakibuebu

    By Godwin Etakibuebu

Opening this discuss with the word “again” means that similar situation happened before in the lives of the great people of the Urhobo Nation of the Niger Delta – talking of derailing from the road they should have passed and finding themselves in a turbulent “political wilderness”.

The last time it happened, they remained like flocks without shepherd for almost twenty five years while only the creator of mankind can say with sure precision how long it will take them [in the wilderness] this time around before coming out of the woods.

Let us look at records of events that led to the present self-imposed predicament. The Urhobo Progress Union [UPU]; a socio-cultural organisation, has been an umbrella-mother for the Urhobo nation for close to one hundred years.

It is, in fact, the second longest socio-cultural organisation in Africa, next only to the Africa National Congress of South Africa.

It has a very moderate constitution, though gone through few reformations and amendments, remains the life-wire of the organisation. The Constitution, even as amended in 2005 by the Benjamin Okumagba-led Executive, provided for three years tenure [subject to maximum of two-tenures] for the President General and his Executive.

Chief Joseph Omene, incumbent President General, had earlier indicated his interest to contest for a second tenure, which did not go down well with many interest groups in Urhobo land.

Amongst the antagonising groups are some very powerful Urhobo organisations, like the Urhobo Social Club Lagos [USCL] and the Urhobo Historical Society [UHS]. These are powerful interest groups in Urhobo land, mostly the USCL which is fearfully referred to as “Principality and Power”.

In addition, the influential Ukoko r’Ivie [Urhobo Traditional Rulers’ Forum] would never want anything to do with Joe Omene’s second tenure and this is for highly political reason that cannot be accommodated in this work.

There were many other Clan Unions and some individuals that were ready to truncate Omene’s second coming “by all means”. Yes, the storm actually gathered against the man as his camp of antagonism swore proportionately until all of them were able to identify with one aspirant; the multi-Billionaire Chief Moses Taiga, whom they believed could dislodge him [Omone] with ease.

The Kings anointed and blessed Taiga for the race of becoming the President General of UPU. Ditto the USCL and UHS with score of others.

It was a grand plan of pulling the rug off the feet of the incumbent President General. A master plan, they thought it was, until some miscalculations manifested. They did not know that Omone and his Executive, with help of some Senior Advocate of Nigeria [SAN], had perfected making the second and final tenure an accomplished issue – albeit through the route of constitutionality.

The character of the person of Moses Taiga, in addition to the difficulty of authenticating some claims of his previous benevolence to the Urhobo nation/people by the Major General Orho Obada-led ad-hoc Screening Committee for the congress did not work towards enhancing smooth prosecution of the Moses-Taiga-for-President agenda, as plotted by all interested groups earlier mentioned.

Every other event that came in quick succession before the UPU Congress slated for Urhobo House in Agbarho, including a late court injunction secured [or procured?] against Omene’s candidature in the expected election and evacuation of same [just about two days to the Congress] became manipulative materials in the hands of all personae dramatis involved in the toga.

What happened thereafter, leading to an alleged blockade of the road to Urhobo House at Uvwiamuge in Agbarho on the day of the election, into relocating the venue of conducting the election from Urhobo House in Agbarho to Joseph Omene’s own compound in Mosogar, where he was “returned elected”, shall remain a bizarre reconnaissance of historical documentation for unborn generations.

Joseph Omene’s greatest weapon of winning this battle and maybe the war, at least for now, is the wicked elevation of immorality over and above legality.

To have reallocated the venue of election where he had absolute over-riding interest from the Urhobo House in Agbarho to his personal house in Mosogar would remain a murder, in absolutism, of every principle of morality. By that action, the man should be seen as morally bankrupt.

But wait a moment. Is any act of immorality at any particular time tantamount to illegality? I am afraid not. It is that maverick politician of our times; Francis Arthur Nzeribe, who once said “that what a millionaire minds is legality but not morality” when he was defining a millionaire’s route to wealth creation.

Joseph Omene might just be another crude politician, like Nzeribe’s millionaire, who got himself to this “limited top” of Urhobo politics only through the assassination of morality while minding legality. The courts have not proven his legal culpability in the whole exercise nor did the UPU constitution restrict its election to “a geographical location”, like strictly the “Urhobo House at Uvwiamuge in Agbarho”.

At this point let us pause and ask one cogent question. How did the Urhobo people come to this road of perfidy once again, having painfully gone through it before? What are the lessons that they did not learn or refused to learn?

If permitted by the Editor, l shall bring my experience of involvement in the resolution of the previous conflict to escalate this discussion further, even in this page, in attempting solutions to the present quagmire so that the Urhobo Nation may not “die”. No, the Urhobo people of the Niger Delta must not “die” politically.

Godwin Etakibuebu, a veteran journalist, wrote from Lagos.
