Poll: Who should be 2023 presidential flagbearer of APC?

With the 2023 General Elections drawing ever closer, political parties in the country and their aspirants have started playing real politics.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) observes that the party that has drawn major attention so far is the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), especially for the cost of the party’s nomination and expression of interest forms.

However bogus the cost of the nomination and expression of interest forms of the APC are, aspirants have continued to purchase the forms in droves. Even cronies and allies of top politicians have purchased the forms for their own to contest the presidential election.

Ahead of the APC primaries, with this poll, TNG hopes to test the popularity of the aspirants that have purchased the nomination and expression of interest forms of the APC so far, not forgetting that more aspirants are still lurking around the APC national secretariat like a beehive for the presidential forms.

  • Delta 2023: Edevbie, Augoye lead in TNG online poll

Delta 2023: Edevbie, Augoye lead in TNG online poll

Most Nigerians, especially Deltans feel either Olorogun David Edevbie or Chief James Augoye is the best hand to succeed Governor Ifeanyi Okowa come 2023, according to an independent poll recently conducted by TheNewsGuru.com (TNG).

TNG conducted the poll between Friday 15th October 2021 and Saturday 16th October 2021 to sample the opinion of Deltans on who they think is the best hand to succeed Governor Okowa come 2023.

A total of 1,398 respondents took part in the poll, and after cleaning up the voting results, TNG reports both Olorogun Edevbie, the former Chief of Staff of the State and Chief Augoye, the immediate past Commissioner for Works of the State raked up over 70% of total votes.

This, therefore, means the battle of popularity for who replaces Governor Okowa come 2023 is between Edevbie and Augoye. However, bear in mind that political parties are yet to conduct primaries, and that a poll is not a prediction of how the election will ultimately turn out. The actual poll to decide the winner of the election will take place in 2023. The poll, instead, is a snapshot of the race as it currently stands.

According to the poll that was keenly contested, 36.67% respondents voted Edevbie as the best hand to replace Governor Okowa come 2023, and 34.65% of respondents say Chief Augoye is the one, while a scant 2.50% of respondents voted for Sheriff Oborevwori, the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, who just indicated interest recently to contest the guber election.

The poll featured, in addition to Edevbie, Augoye and Oborevwori, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, Olorogun Fred Majemite, Senator James Manager, Kingsley Burutu Otuaro, Festus Ovie Agas, Chief Abel Esievo, Olorogun Kenneth Gbagi, Olorogun Kenneth Okpara, Barrister Ejaife Omizu Odebala and Olorogun Jaro Egbo.

While Senator Omo-Agege polled 8.48% of total votes, Olorogun Majemite polled 7.19%, Senator Manager polled 3.31%, Otuaro polled 2.91%, Agas polled 1.70%, Chief Esievo polled 1.21%, Olorogun Gbagi polled 0.97%, Olorogun Okpara polled 0.24%, Barrister Odebala polled 0.08% and Olorogun Egbo polled 0.08% of total votes.

Outcome of poll on who becomes next Governor of Delta State after Governor Okowa

TNG reports the poll received votes from 27 countries, including the United States of America, Nigeria, United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Canada, Cyprus, Ghana, France, Italy and Netherlands.

Others are the Republic of South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Ireland, Sweden, Turkey, Bulgaria, Burundi, Benin, Spain, Luxembourg, Morocco, Namibia, Philippines, Romania, Saudi Arabia and Zambia.

Countries where votes were received from

No doubt, Delta State politics is in a state of high flux. While the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is calculating it’s options on how to retain the State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is painfully searching for a balance to wrest the State from the PDP.

This poll is the latest survey showing the popularity of aspirants in the build up to Delta State 2023 Governorship Election. Subsequent polls would be conducted by TNG as events unfold in the State.

The incidents occurred 24 hours to the council election, scheduled to hold on Saturday, August 22.

The police spokesperson, Tee Leo-Ikoro, who confirmed the incident on Friday, said, “so many people were injured.”

  • UK Labour leader Corbyn quits after crushing defeat in poll

UK Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said on Friday he would quit as his party faced its worst electoral defeat in 84 years.

However, he did not set a date for his departure and added he would remain in charge during a period of reflection.

An exit poll and early results showed Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party were set for a resounding victory in Britain’s election, allowing him to deliver Brexit on Jan. 31.

Critics blamed a collapse in support in traditional Labour strongholds on Corbyn’s equivocation over Brexit, and said many voters had cited their dislike for him on doorsteps across the country.

That leaves Labour, a 100-year-old party born out of the trade union movement, wrestling with what went wrong and what to do about it.

“I will not lead the party in any future general election campaign,” Corbyn said in his north London constituency, where he comfortably held on to his seat. The 70-year-old described the election results as “very disappointing.

“I will discuss with our party and ensure there is now a process of reflection on this result and the policies that the party will take going forward.”

Asked whether she thought she would retain her seat in the northern city of Stoke-on-Trent, a Labour bastion, the party’s candidate Ruth Smeeth bluntly replied: “I’ve definitely lost.”

She placed the blame firmly on Corbyn’s shoulders.

The exit poll showed voters had gone with Johnson’s “Get Brexit Done” promise and pro-market philosophy and rejected left-wing veteran Corbyn, who had promised a second Brexit referendum and a radical expansion of the state.

Corbyn, an avowed socialist who took control of the party after a bruising 2015 election defeat, has shifted Labour sharply away from the centre ground that underpinned three Labour majority governments led by Tony Blair.

During four years in charge, he has built an ultra-loyal support base, pushing centrist members to the fringes and creating an ideological schism that critics say has alienated many of its traditional working-class voters.

An ardent pro-Palestinian activist, he has also been accused of failing to address accusations of anti-Semitism among his supporters.

“Corbyn was a disaster on the doorstep … everyone knew he couldn’t lead the working class out of a paper bag,” said Alan Johnson, who served as a senior minister under Blair.

But early results showed that Labour’s heartlands in former industrial areas of central and northern England – areas that typically voted for Brexit – had swung towards Johnson’s Conservatives.

Labour lost seats it has held for decades like Blyth Valley in northern England, which had been Labour since it was formed in 1950 and Wrexham, the Welsh seat that had voted Labour each election since 1935.

Corbyn did not address the exit polls as he arrived to hear the results in his own north London electoral seat, but weary Labour candidates taking in the scale of their defeat made it clear that he would have to face eventually.

“I am devastated, I don’t know how you could have any other reaction other than being utterly heartbroken,” Labour’s Jess Phillips said. “This is not a time for easy answers as much as I wish it was.”

  • Clinton calls Buhari, wishes Nigeria a successful poll

…to speak with Atiku later in the week

President Muhammadu Buhari has commended former President of the United States, Mr. Bill Clinton, for his continuous support for Nigeria and the growth of her democracy.

The President, who took a telephone call from President Clinton Wednesday night, described him as a friend of the country.

He commended Clinton’s constant support for the peace, stability and progress of Nigeria under a democratic dispensation.

President Buhari also assured Clinton of his commitment to free, fair and credible elections in the weeks ahead.

President Clinton, who regretted his inability to visit the country to witness the signing of the final peace accord before the general elections, wished Nigeria well as her citizens go to the polls.

Clinton had cancelled his scheduled visit to Nigeria, and promised to speak with the contenders in the Feb. 16 presidential election.

Angel Ureña, spokesperson to Clinton, said that the former president would, however, speak with President Muhammadu Buhari, the Presidential candidate of ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), later in the week.

He would also speak with Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Ureña said the trip was called off because it could be “politicized.”

Clinton was scheduled to visit Abuja this week alongside Baroness Patricia Scotland, the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.

The planned trip was facilitated by the Kofi Annan Foundation and the National Peace Committee (NPC).

Over the course of the last several days, and after various conversations with the different stakeholders, it’s become apparent that President Clinton’s visit to Nigeria has the potential to be politicized in a way that is not in line with the goals of the Committee.

Therefore, he will not be travelling to Abuja,” Clinton’s spokesman Angel Ureña said in a statement.

Clinton would continue to support the NPC ‘s work toward peaceful and fair elections in Nigeria, Ureha said.

He was billed to deliver a keynote at a ceremony for the signing of a peace accord by presidential candidates.

2019: Boko Haram poses major threats to credible polls – CAN

The resurgent activities of Boko Haram terrorists may pose a threat to the forthcoming 2019 general elections, the Christian Association of Nigeria ( CAN ) warned on Thursday.

The CAN leadership urged the federal government to tackle the attacks before the polls.

This was part of the resolutions at the first quarterly meeting of CAN in Abuja.

The Christian body also pointed out efforts of the government in providing security is “not yielding the needed results as wanton killings have continued, especially in some States in the northern part of the country.”

CAN urged Nigerians to pray for the peaceful conduct of the 2019 general elections.

A statement by Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, Special Assistant (Media & Communications) to the CAN President, Rev. Samson Ayokunle said: “Boko Haram appeared to have resurrected again, decimating communities in Borno and Yobe States in particular, not sparing soldiers.

This resurgence of insecurity in the Northeast portends danger for the forthcoming general elections if efforts at curtailing it are not increased. Many voters might be disenfranchised from voting.

The Association commends President Muhammadu Buhari for the continuous reassurance that all will be done by the government to make the forthcoming general elections free, fair and credible.

We at the same time implore Mr. President to make sure that all these promises are transformed into reality through concrete efforts that would prevent violence and other electoral malpractices.

The Association calls on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Police and other security agents not to make themselves available to be used for rigging or any form of electoral malpractice by the politicians.

No voter or election observer must be intimidated or harassed throughout the period of the election.

We equally urge politicians to run away from vote buying while the electorates should not allow anybody to buy their votes. If you sell your vote, you sell your future.”

The body added: “We reaffirm our support for all efforts of government geared towards stamping out corruption from our country.

We, however, caution that efforts geared towards stamping out corruption from Nigeria must follow due process of the law while the independence of each arm of government for peace and harmony in the society must be well maintained.

Wisdom and caution should be applied by those in government and other Nigerians in all that we do so that our actions and speeches might not set our nation on fire at this crucial period of election.
