Alleged fraud: Osun Govt shuts state-owned poly, as suspended rector resumes

The Osun State Government has directed staff and students of the State Polytechnic in  Iree, to proceed on a two-week break, citing the resumption of the suspended Rector, Dr Tajudeen Odetayo, as the reason for its action.

Odetayo was suspended in July by the State Government on account of alleged financial recklessness and abuse of office and was subsequently replaced with Mr Kehinde Adeyemi in an Acting capacity, while a committee was constituted to investigate allegations against him

Announcing the closure in a statement, the state Commissioner for Education, Dipo Eluwole, said, “This is to inform the general public, particularly members of staff and students of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, to proceed on two weeks break with immediate effect.

“The immediate break is a necessary action to maintain peace in the institution following the forceful return of the suspended Rector, Dr Odetayo.

“The general public should also note that school accounts have been frozen with immediate effect, and it is imperative that everyone cooperates fully and adheres to these directives.”

It was learnt that his return followed the ruling of the Lagos Division of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, which granted an interim order restraining Gov. Ademola Adeleke, and 14 others from appointing a rector for the institution.

Odetayo was led into the premises of the school by armed operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) was also accompanied to his office by some associates and staff of the polytechnic.

While addressing those who received him, Odetayo expressed surprise that he was suspended without being queried.

He said he returned to the school having secured order of court which had restrained the governor from appointing another rector.

“I was really surprised when my suspension letter came in because, prior to that, I didn’t receive any query or called for any meeting.

“I am resuming back to office because the court has given an injunction on the matter and there is a stay of execution.

“I know our governor is a listening person and I want to appreciate him for allowing the rule of law take its course.

“I am back to continue working towards moving the polytechnic forward.” Odetayo said

In reaction to the development, the acting rector, Adeyemi, in a statement called for calm, describing Odetayo’s return as “forceful invasion”.

Adeyemi said,  “Following the forceful invasion of the office of the Osun State Polytechnic Iree’s Rector, by the suspended Rector of the institution, as the Acting Rector of the Polytechnic, I appeal to members of the Polytechnic Community to remain calm.

“I urge you to remain calm and go about your normal duties without any protest.

“The government has taken steps to ensure that normalcy returns.”

Meanwhile, the state government has announced the immediate closure of the institution for two weeks.

The state government suspended Odetayo through a letter dated July 11, citing financial recklessness and abuse of office.

The  government subsequently appointed Adeyemi as acting rector, while a committee was constituted to investigate allegations against the suspended Rector

‘This polytechnic is dead’, Gov Zulum suspends Alma mata management after discovering cobwebs, rodents in laboratories during surprise visit

Governor of Borno of State Professor Babagana Zulum has suspended the entire management of the state-owned Ramat Polytechnic in Maiduguri, for a period of six months.

The suspension came after the governor, who was a student of the Polytechnic between 1986 to 1988, unexpectedly visited the Polytechnic around 9:00 am on Tuesday and found most of the laboratories out of use, with some covered in cobwebs and rodents roaming around due to neglect.

After assessing all the infrastructure and learning conditions, he directed the state’s Commissioner of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Babagana Mallumbe, to take over the affairs of the school immediately.

“As far as I am concerned, this Polytechnic is dead. Nothing is working,” he said.

“The workshops are not in existence, the mechanical workshop is not working, the agricultural workshop is not working, likewise, the entrepreneurship centre is not working. The school is facing myriads of problems, ranging from lack of funding and commitment. As a former student of this polytechnic, a former rector, I have moral stakes in this polytechnic. Insha’Allah, I will not allow this polytechnic to rot during my era as Governor of Borno State. I will do everything possible within my reach to ensure functionality of this institution Insha Allah.

“I have directed the Commissioner of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation to take over the affairs for the next six months. The ministry is to ensure that all the workshops and the laboratories are put back to use as soon as possible. The entrepreneurship centre should immediately be put back to use as well. When I was at the Polytechnic as a rector, the entrepreneurship centre was producing nothing less than 10,000 to 20,000 school desks and chairs every month. We produced hospital beddings,” Zulum said.

Thereafter, he held a closed-door meeting with the management of the Polytechnic.

He also directed the Ministry of Water Resources to drill two deep aquifers boreholes and carry out a complete water channel network within the polytechnic, which is coming after prior interventions he approved for Polytechnic in 2019, to reduce problems of water supply.

After the meeting, Governor Zulum, while addressing thousands of students at the premises of the polytechnic, assured them that payment of scholarships will commence soon.

“The verification exercise has just been completed, I want to assure you that as soon as the detailed report is forwarded to me, we will pay your scholarship immediately,” he said.

The Governor was also at the Federal Secretariat, where enrollment exercises of Batch C N-Power volunteers were being conducted.

On arrival, he addressed thousands of applicants gathered for the biometric enrollment that will enable them to get monthly stipends from the Federal Government.

He assured them of the state government’s support despite N-Power being a Federal Government programme.

Poly workers to commence two weeks warning strike Jan 4

The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnic (SSANIP) would commence a two- week warning strike from Monday, 4th January 2021, following federal government’s inability to address her demands.

Addressing journalists at the end of its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja, national president of SSANIP, Comrade Adebanjo Ogunsipe, said the union will cripple activities in the nation’s polytechnic should government fail to meet her demands.

“We want to state without any avoidance of doubt, that we have a government that barely listens or attends to issues.

“We have a government that care less, whether students are locked away from our various institutions and wasting away valuable time in their lives.

“We have a government that seems not to u understand any language even when you are pleading for what naturally you should be taken for granted as done and as we have applicable in other decent and well- ruled climes, the world over.

“Haven considered everything before us, the union resolved at the end of this meeting that at the first instance we are embarking on a 14 – day strike in the first instance, commencing from Monday 4th of January, 2021.

“We will come back and assess and if the only way and the only system and process that will ensure that things are properly done in the polytechnic system is to shutdown the whole polytechnic thereafter, we will not hesitate to do so.”

Some of the demands of the polytechnic workers include the implementation of the NEEDS assessment report and release of funds for polytechnic sector; release of scheme of service for the polytechnic; non-payment of complete salaries and arrears of minimum wage for staff of polytechnics and the reconstitution of the Governing Councils of all federal and State polytechnics.
