2023: Why we met Wike in Port Harcourt – PDP governorship candidates

The 17 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  governorship candidates who visited Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike in Port Harcourt on Tuesday have stated reasons for the visit.

They said that the meeting was part of effort to reconcile the warring parties within the party and end the rift among aggrieved members.

According to them, the meeting also served as an opportunity to deliberate on a winning strategy in next year’s general elections coming up  in the country.

However, it was gathered that the meeting was held behind closed doors in Wike’s country home in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area and it spanned into late night

According to report, Wike had insisted that they were not in any position to resolve the crisis and therefore referred them back to the National Working Committee of the party.

But the PDP governorship candidate in Kaduna State, Isa Muhammed, who spoke on behalf of other candidates, said they decided to visit Wike, having previously heard from the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Muhammed described the meeting as fruitful but said that the details will be presented before the MWC  for further deliberations.

“The talks were fruitful, open discussions with sincerity and we are home and dry. We discuss issues that border on the situation within the party and internal matter is not something you should look for details.

“We have discussed with the presidential candidate and we are here with our brother and friend and issues that border on what is happening have been sorted out.

“The issues have been resolved as far as I am concerned because we have heard from both sides. And we are going to meet with the National Working Committee to take a decision,” the Kaduna PDP governorship candidate said.

The PDP is trying to settle its internal rift before the September 28th start date for presidential election campaign  in the country.

The road to destruction is straight – By Owei Lakemfa

The  Kings Assembly Pentecostal Church, in Port Harcourt announced that it would be handing out food packs to the needy from 9am on Saturday, May 28, 2022. Envisaging a large turn-out in Nigeria’s oil-rich city, the church wisely picked a mini-stadium as venue. What, however, it did not envisage, was a mammoth crowd which  began gathering the day before the programme.

In the morning of the annual “Shop for Free” programme, a side gate was opened, perhaps to organise the crowd for an orderly entry. What resulted was a stampede. The hungry in the ‘Giant of Africa’ could not remain still or orderly. Subsequently, 31 people died.  A forensic analysis was not required to determine that many of the victims are children and women; the photographs of the footwear at the scene already confirmed this truth.

I have read in some media that this was “a shocking development at a programme that aimed to offer hope to the needy”. But this is not correct. This type of tragedy has been witnessed a number of times. For instance, in Ilorin, Kwara State, I have records that show that in contemporary times, this type of stampede for food and mass deaths have occurred at least three times.  As I write this, I have staring at me the headline of the News Express of October 18, 2013 with the screaming headline: “3 pregnant women, 17 others die over free Sallah food in Ilorin”.

The Port Harcourt tragedy points to the fact that there is increasing hunger in the land, it was avoidable, and that in sane climes, it is enough reason for the government throw in the towel. But the best we can hope for from the Buhari government is a meaningless press statement saying how sorrowful the President felt. Meanwhile, the dead would be    buried and life, if it can be so described, continues, while the country awaits the next avoidable tragedy and heart-felt condolences of    His Excellency and Commander-in-Chief.

As we all know, this is a man-made tragedy arising from  unfathomable incompetence in governance, and not the destiny of the victims. The statistics even by government agencies tell us over 90 million Nigerians are hungry and desperately poor.

Two days before the Port Harcourt tragedy, the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS,    released a    new report titled: “Selected Food Price Watch for the month of April 2022”    in which it revealed    that selected food prices recorded an increase of 42 per cent in just one year!

The report showed that in the last 12 months, basic food like beans which is needed for simple nutrition, and yam, rose by over 42 per cent, while    the average price of palm oil (1 bottle) increased by 45.59 per cent, from N578.86 in April 2021 to N842.75 in April 2022.

I recall that when Buhari assumed office seven years ago, the National Minimum Wage of N18,000 could buy two and a half bags of stone-free rice. But today, the Minimum Wage of N30,000 cannot buy one bag.

Two years ago in Abuja, you walked into a mall and picked a loaf of bread at between    N250 and N300, before the war in Ukraine, it had risen to N600. A packet of noddles was N30 in 2016, it is now N150. A crate of eggs was N700 three years ago, it is now N1,900. Five years ago, N10,000 worth of electricity units I purchased lasted three to four months, now it is three weeks. Yet my electrical gadgets have neither increased nor does the electricity distribution company supply as regular electricity as was the case in the past.

One thing    that has    become far cheaper in the country are lives, while the tendency of the Buhari government to tell barefaced lies has, like inflation,    continued to record double    figure increases.    For instance, while the cost of electricity continues to increase, the National Electricity Regulatory Agency says consumers are lying and calls them out for debate. This is despite the admission of the Minister of Finance, Budgets and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, that the Federal Government had quietly removed all so-called subsidies in the power sector.    When I was young, there    was a claim    that there were people who could tell so much lies that the dead would be forced to wake up, at least to deny some of the lies. But the Buhari government has surpassed such people.

Although an expert in presenting ‘alternative facts’, it can do nothing significant to alter facts available in the public space.

These include the fact that 7.9 million Nigerians went    hungry in 2020 and that according to the Hunger Index of that year,    Nigeria was    ranked 98th out of    107 countries.

Meanwhile, government and its allies are busy    with party ‘primaries’ where delegates are openly bribed both in Naira and foreign currency, with the main opposition doing no better. I am wondering whether with the off-loading of so much dollars into the political arena, the Naira which was about N200 to the dollar when Buhari came to power, but today, stands at N610,    would not appreciate. Or would it take a further dive to the river bed?

A main tragedy  is that the Nigerian political space has been hijacked    and what is needed is to free it without paying ransom.  I have heard some otherwise brilliant    Nigerian politicians promising to continue the ruinous policies of the Buhari administration, and I ask myself,    is there anything I am missing? Do we live in different countries or the same endangered entity called Nigeria?

My conclusion is that such people may want to continue  the Buhari misrule for their personal gains and plans, or may be humouring the old maximum ruler. I recall in the days of the 1993 Interim National Government, ING, a group of us, including Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti and Dr.  Frederick Fasehun, and the conscientious lawyers, Olisa Agbakoba and Femi Falana, used to meet Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, winner of the annulled presidential election.

The whole world new the ING was a contraption waiting to be pulled down. We planned a national protest like the Peoples’ Power in the Philippines that made the Marcos regime history. But MKO rejected all our plans. He reasoned that Ernest Shonekan, the Head of the ING was like a lunatic holding a knife and rather than try to snatch it with the possibility of cutting ourselves, it was better to persuade him to hand over the knife.

The strategy did not work and we ended experiencing    the Abacha nightmare. In all these, how much more    must a people suffer? How many more tragedies must they go through? If we continue this way, the road to the country’s destruction will be a straight one.

  • Buhari expresses sadness over deaths in Port Harcourt stampede

President Muhammadu Buhari says he is extremely saddened by the reported deaths of scores of worshippers during a stampede at a religious event in Port Harcourt, Rivers.

Reacting to the incident in a statement issued by his media aide, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Saturday, the president admonished organisers of religious, political and other big events to plan well and carry them out in a disciplined manner to avert similar calamitous deaths and injuries.

The president directed that “all efforts should be made to provide relief to those injured in the unfortunate incident”.

He added that disaster and relief agencies of the Federal Government should maintain constant contact with the Rivers Government to ensure that good care is taken of the relief efforts.

Buhari expressed his condolences and that of the nation to the bereaved families and to the government and people of Rivers, and prayed to the Almighty to repose the souls of the deceased.

  • Port Harcourt stampede: Rivers CP directs discrete investigations into incident

The Commissioner of Police (CP) in Rivers, CP Friday Eboka, has given a directive for the conduct of discrete investigations into the Saturday stampede in Port Harcourt in which 31 persons died.

The commissioner’s directive is contained in a statement issued by DSP Grace Iringe-Koko, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state on Saturday in Port Harcourt.

Recall that 31 persons died in the stampede which occurred during an outreach programme organised by a new generation church, Kings Church Assembly, early Saturday.

Eboka, while condemning the incident, directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigations Department of the command to carry out the investigations into the incident discretely.

He further called on religious and charity organisations to ensure they worked with the police for security and crowd control management when organising their programmes in the future.

The CP commiserates with the bereaved families and prayed God to comfort and grant them the fortitude to bear the loss.

“Preliminary investigations conducted by the command have however revealed that the unfortunate incident occurred when the management of Kings Church Assembly organised a crusade which attracted mammoth crowd.

“It further revealed that there were plans by the church management to give away food and gift items to the less privileged.

“Unfortunately, the crowd became tumultuous and uncontrollable and all efforts made by the organisers to bring sanity proved abortive hence, the stampede,” he said.

The Police Command in Rivers State has confirmed the death of 31 persons in a stampede during an outreach programme organised by a new generation church, Kings Assembly, on Saturday in Port Harcourt.

The acting Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident, saying the church, located in GRA in the Rivers State capital, had invited members of the public to an event where it would share some gift items to its members, including food stuffs.

She said that the event was held at the Port Harcourt Polo Club, a bigger facility to accommodate the anticipated crowd, including the underprivileged.

The PPRO stated that though the programme was billed to start by 9 a.m., some of the participants arrived there before time.

The command’s spokesman said that the church leadership was distributing the palliatives to the participants before the time at the venue which led to the stampede.

She said the stampede must have occurred when the people who had gathered struggled to have items, resulting in the death of the 31 persons.

  • Contradictions that do not contradict [1] – By Femi Aribisala

Contradictions that do not contradict [1] – By Femi Aribisala

    By Femi Aribisala

“God has written some scriptures into our lives”.

I told God in Lagos that I needed a car. He told someone in Porth Harcourt to send me his car. The Lord told him: “Femi Aribisala needs your car in Lagos. I want you to send it to him.”

That is how I became the owner of a Toyota Rav 4.

Nevertheless, when someone asked me, I maintained that a car is not a blessing of God. That is not a contradiction. That is wisdom.

Solomon says: “The blessing of the Lord makes one rich, and He adds no sorrow with it.” (Proverbs 10:22). A car can add sorrow. It can be stolen. It can have an accident. It can kill you.

I asked God to give someone a car. He did so within a week. Nevertheless, I say a car is an abomination to God. That is not a contradiction. It is wisdom from God.

Jesus says: “What is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.” (Luke 16:15). A car is highly esteemed among men.

God says: “Sing, O barren, you who have not borne! Break forth into singing, and cry aloud, you who have not labored with child!” (Isaiah 54:1).

Nevertheless, when a barren woman comes to see me, I pray for her to bear a child. That is not a contradiction, that is wisdom from God.

The same bible says: “No one shall suffer miscarriage or be barren in your land.” (Exodus 23:26). “Even the barren has borne seven,” says barren Hannah. (1 Samuel 2:5).

God asked me to pray for someone going into politics. He said she should choose a post and I should pray for her to get it. Nevertheless, when a Christian brother asked me if a believer should engage in politics, I said “No!”

“No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.” (2 Timothy 2:4).

That is not a contradiction. That is wisdom.

I prayed that God would make a man very wealthy. I prayed that He would put N1 billion naira in another’s bank account. Then I conducted a fellowship where I insisted that God is the God of the poor and not of the rich. The gospel of the kingdom of God is for the poor.

That is not a contradiction. That is wisdom from God.

The people rejected the contradictions of Jesus and left His church when He told them to eat His flesh and drink His blood. He did not persuade them to stay and even invited His disciples to leave as well.

    Love of God

Jesus appeared to me in a dream as the Lion of the Tribe of Judah. The lion stood in front of me and played with me. He held out His claw and it extended as if by hidden hydraulics. He then used His claw to stroke my eyeball.

The message was clear to me. Like Abraham, God wanted me to know that He is my friend. Although He is a lion, this lion has a contradiction. This lion will not hurt me. Indeed, this lion turns out to be my friend; a naturally unlikely proposition.

Before then, the Lord spoke to me through my own lips. He said, “Femi, Femi, Femi, I have loved you from the foundation of the world.” I compared this with what Jesus told God the Father. He said: “You loved Me before the foundation of the world.” (John 17:24).

So, God loved Jesus BEFORE the foundation of the world. But He loved me FROM the foundation of the world.

He then gave me a scripture that is about Jesus. When I protested that this is about Jesus, God said: “Femi, it is also talking about you.”

“Listen, O coastlands, to Me, and take heed, you peoples from afar! The Lord has called Me from the womb; from the matrix of My mother He has made mention of My name. And He has made My mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of His hand He has hidden Me, and made Me a polished shaft; in His quiver He has hidden Me.” “And He said to me, ‘You are My servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified.’” (Isaiah 49:1-3).

If you have read any of my books, you will find this scripture at the beginning of every one of them. If you have been to my YouTube Channel, you will find that I quote it in my Introductory Video.

What conclusion can I draw from all this?

    Assurance of salvation

Whatever happens, I will end up in heaven. Whatever happens, I will spend eternity with God. Since God says He has loved me from the foundation of the world, I know He cannot stop loving me. For He says: “I am the Lord, I do not change; therefore, you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.” (Malachi 3:6).

Even if I backslide, God will save me. Even if I deny Him like Peter, Jesus will pray for me that my faith should not fail. He even assured me of this by giving me another scripture:

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10).

If you ever get to Isaiah 41:10 in the bible, you must not read it. That scripture is now my exclusive property. When the Lord gave it to me, I told Him I would never need any other reassurance from Him. Whatever happens, I know He will uphold me with His righteous right hand.

Nevertheless, when I read Romans 8:38-39, I could not receive it.

Paul says: “I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

This scripture obviously agrees with the assurances God has given me. Nevertheless, I disagreed with it. I said: “No! Sin can separate me from the love of God.”

Is that not a big contradiction? No, it is not. It is wisdom from God.

    Revelation

God has written some scriptures into our lives. We do not need to read them in the bible, they are already in our hearts.

I asked Martins Hile: “Are there things you discovered you know even though you never learnt them?” Martins was very excited because he knew exactly what I was talking about.

The Holy Spirit cleanses us from all sin by writing scriptures in our hearts. He knew us even when we did not know Him. He has been working in us from the foundation of the world.

“Even Gentiles, who do not have God’s written law, show that they know His law when they instinctively obey it, even without having heard it. They demonstrate that God’s law is written in their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right.” (Romans 2:14-16).

What I told God to stop 50 Cent from performing in Port Harcourt – Pastor Ibiyeomie

Pastor David Ibiyeomie of the Salvation Ministries has given credit to God for stopping American rapper 50 Cent from appearing at a concert on 4 December 2004 in Port Harcourt.

The Nigerian preacher said the concert date clashed with a crusade planned by the church. To his dismay, many church members had also bought the tickets to the 50 Cent concert.

The crusade, a night affair, stood to be poorly attended.

Jittery about a possible poor attendance at the church’s event, Pastor Ibiyeomie said he asked for Jesus intercession.

“I came up a night to his coming…on the rostrum. I said listen if 50 Cent comes tomorrow, I am not called by God.. 50 Cent will not come”, he declared.

And 50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis James Jackson, did not come as he left for U.S. earlier than planned.

Thousands of fans in Port Harcourt were left disappointed when the rapper did not show up.
