FG unveils portal to engage senior citizens

The Federal Government has unveiled a web portal to engage older citizens across the country.

The Director-General, National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC) Dr Emem Omokaro, who made this known in Abuja said the portal is known as the Continuing Engagement Bureau (CEB).

Omokaro said the platform was created to collect data on retired civil servants, and professionals among others in other to link them with agencies of government or organizations that may need their wealth of experience.

“It is specially to sensitise and motivate both the senior citizens, private sector and the public to embrace the opportunities this initiative offers for job creation partnerships and labour market access,’’ Omokaro said.

She said the programme essentially targets senior citizens, who are retired professionals.

”This will also include experts and practitioners in diverse fields, who still carry the torch and passion for their skills, competencies and net worth to serve their communities.

“It also has provisions for older farmers and artisans both rural and urban, who would be encouraged to register on the portal cooperatives and be connected with opportunities for productive activities and markets,’’ she said.

According to the director-general, the NSCC is particularly excited because the CEB programme is designed to enable senior citizens with diverse intrinsic capacities to continue to participate in what they have reason to value.

She said the programme would not only strengthen senior citizens access to labour market but would also provide platform for interactions, life-long learning opportunities, especially in ICT, while supplementing income and reducing poverty, redundancy and loneliness among senior citizens.

A consultant with NSCC, Dr Emeka Okengwu, who described the event as one of the flagship programmes of the centre, said it was primed towards creating a platform that would be used in capturing, aggregating, engaging and utilising the skills, talents and resources of retirees.

Okengwu said the platform would also be used to connect them to opportunities to utilise their experience and skills for their continued valuable and meaningful contributions to society through volunteering or paid employment.

  • #OndoDecides2020: 70% results uploaded on INEC portal – Official

#OndoDecides2020: 70% results uploaded on INEC portal – Official

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Saturday said 70 per cent of results in the just concluded Ondo governorship election have been uploaded on its portal.

The electoral commissioner said “hopefully” all the results will trickle in by Sunday afternoon and the winner subsequently declared.

INEC Senior National Commissioner, Prof Anthonia Simbine, made this known during a television programme in Akure, the state capital, on Saturday evening.

Simbine said about 70 per cent of the results from all polling units in the state have been uploaded on INEC results viewing portal.

She, however, pointed out that the Commission was mindful of the fact that the state was riverine in nature and so, therefore, results from some areas in the state would come in late.

When asked when a winner would be announced, the INEC official said, “I don’t think we can say for definite now. We all know that Ondo State is quite large with varying types of terrains including going over the seas.

“All the results have to come in before we can really say.

“Right now, polling units’ results have been uploaded. We have about 70 per cent of those units’ results uploaded on the INEC results viewing portal.

“But nothing can happen. These have to pass through the RA collation as well as local government collation centres.

“We are aware particularly in the case of Ilaje that they have not concluded their RA collation and they will be doing that at Igbokoda hopefully tonight.

“It is doubtful that they will be able to come at all. But hopefully, probably, by mid-day tomorrow (Sunday), everything should be in, plus or minus.”

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that though 17 political candidates fielded candidates for the election, the race is tightly around candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and incumbent governor, Rotimi Akeredolu; Eyitayo Jegede of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Deputy Governor Agboola Ajayi of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

Pantami said it was part of government’s key initiatives aimed at empowering innovators and entrepreneurs with the requisite skills to thrive in an emerging digital economy.

He explained that the Digital Nigeria programme was a key component of the Digital Literacy and Skills Pillar of the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS) for a Digital Nigeria which was being championed by himself.

Pantami said the ministry was partnering with global institutions including the African Development Bank (AFDB) and Microsoft to enable Nigerians acquire cutting edge digital skills within the comfort of their homes.

The Minister, however, reiterated government’s resolve to promote skills over paper qualifications.

“We are championing a paradigm shift that lays emphasis on skills, in preference to merely having degrees without skills.

“Degrees are only meant to validate skills, this is a growing trend across the globe.

“The digital literacy and skills pillar recognises the fact that citizens are the greatest assets in any economy, including the digital economy.

“It will support the development of a large pool of digitally literate and digitally skilled citizens. The “Digital Nigeria” mobile app is available on playstore and apple store, enabling Nigerians to enrol in ICT courses within the comfort of their homes,” he said.

Pantami said that much of the content was provided through AfDB’s partnership with Microsoft, adding that students can download certificates after completing the courses.

According to him, across the globe, there is a growing focus on the need for developing skills, rather than merely acquiring degrees.

“To this end, Nigerians are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity by enroling today at https://digitalnigeria.gov.ng; or https://academy.nitda.gov.ng/ accordingly.

“The portals will give details on how to register and how to download the relevant Mobile Apps.

“The Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy is committed to developing the capacity of Nigerians to use technology to solve problems.

“We will keep updating the course offerings to reflect global trends. The Digital Nigeria Programme will provide a platform to empower Nigerians to develop relevant skills and build innovative solutions to address challenges within,” Pantami said.

Some of those present at the launch included Prof. Umar Danbatta, Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and Prof. Mohammed Abubakar, Managing Director of the Galaxy Backbone (GBB).
