God didn’t want me to join Chelsea – Omorodion

Porto striker Samu Omorodion admits that he could have joined Chelsea in the summer.

The young forward signed for Porto from Atletico Madrid for a modest fee close to deadline day.

However, the Bleus had agreed a £34M transfer that included Conor Gallagher going to Atleti.

Instead, they backed out of the deal and signed Joao Felix to allow Gallagher to make the move.

“I had a very difficult summer,” he told Spanish outlet RTVE.

“We had a really bad time because in the end everyone knows that I was close to signing, but it’s true that if it didn’t happen, it was for a reason, because God didn’t want it.

“I’m also very grateful to Porto for giving me the opportunity when things looked at their worst, and I’m very happy with where I am now. I’ve left the past behind and now I’m focused on what’s coming to me.”

  • Europa: Ten Hag explains halftime Rashford change

Europa: Ten Hag explains halftime Rashford change

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has explained why Marcus Rashford was substituted this week.

The forward came off at half-time of United’s Europa League game against FC Porto.

Many fans thought Rashford may have been injured, but Ten Hag confirmed it was rotation.

“He is okay,” the Dutchman told MUTV, warding off any worries of an injury issue. “But also Alejandro Garnacho, he is, in the season, our attacking threat in this moment, and we brought him from the bench.

“We need fresh players also for Sunday so, yes, it was all in the plan.”

He added to TNT Sports: “We have to rotate. Garnacho, we didn’t start him. He had a great game, not only on Sunday, but I think in the whole season. We sub them because on Sunday we have another hard game, a good game, so we need players to be available and be fit and be fresh.

“It’s a quick turnaround to Villa. They have a day longer (to recover) and we have an away game, so we want fresh players on the pitch.”

UCL: Injury boost for Arsenal ahead Porto clash on Wednesday night

Arsenal football club received major  injury boost ahead of their Champions League round of 16 first-leg tie with Porto on Wednesday night.

According to reports from the Emirat Camp, midfielders Thomas Partey and Fabio Vieira returned to first-team training ahead of the Porto clash.

Partey has missed 23 Arsenal games due to a thigh problem

The Ghana international also missed his country’s 2023 AFCON games in Ivory Coast.

He last featured for the Gunners as a substitute in their 1-0 victory over Premier League champions Manchester City last October

According to Football London, Vieira, who has been working his way back from a groin problem, was also in attendance at the open training session at London Colney.

Vieira has been out with the injury since last November.

UCL: Teremi set to miss tie against Arsenal

Porto striker, Mehdi Taremi is set to miss Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League clash against Arsenal at the Emirate.

The Portuguese club revealed that taremi is struggling with an injury to the abductor in his right thigh.

The 31-year-old has scored 86 goals in 172 appearances in all competitions since he joined from Rio Ave.

However, Taremi has found goals hard to come by this season, with only three in the Primeira Liga and three more in other competitions.

The Iran international played in Porto’s last two fixtures and will hope to face the Gunners, but the club has said he suffered the muscle injury in training on Sunday and is undergoing treatment.

Gonçalo Ribeiro, Marcano, Zaidu are also all doubts ahead of the encounter.

  • Porto star lined up as Newcastle owners’ first signing

Porto star lined up as Newcastle owners’ first signing

Newcastle’s new owners are lining up Porto sensation Luis Diaz as their first signing.

Sport TV in Portugal reports the Magpies are prepared to meet the €80m (£67.5m) release clause in the Colombia international’s contract in the January transfer window.

The 24-year-old Diaz has scored 11 goals in 20 games so far this season for both club and country in all competitions and Newcastle could now turn to him to ignite their campaign.

Diaz featured against Liverpool in the Champions League for Porto in September but it was a night to forget for all concerned with the Portuguese club as Jurgen Klopp’s side ran out 5-1 winners.

At present, Newcastle are managerless after sacking Steve Bruce in the week and sit 19th in the Premier League table.

  • UCL: Chelsea owner Abramovich expected in Porto tonight

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is expected to be in Porto for the Champions League Final against Manchester City – and a first meeting with Thomas Tuchel.

Chelsea’s Russian owner is hoping to see his club crowned kings of Europe for the second time under his rule when they face Manchester City at the Estadio do Dragao on Saturday night.

And the billionaire has been urged by captain Cesar Azpilicueta to continue his support for the club as they bid to end Pep Guardiola’s domestic dominance.

“He always showed that desire to make the club a winner and to always try to get the best for the club,” said Azpilicueta. “But I don’t want him to stop there because he and everybody in the club do an amazing job off the pitch and I think it is remarkable.

“We are very grateful to have him with us.

“Chelsea always fights for everything and we have to go step by step. It is true that in the Premier League we finished fourth and that is not where we want to be and we always seek to improve every season. Obviously that’s our challenge next season.

  • UEFA Champions League final moved to Porto from Istanbul

UEFA Champions League final moved to Porto from Istanbul

The 2020/2021 UEFA Champions League final match between Manchester City and Chelsea on May 29 has been moved from Istanbul to Porto, European football ruling body UEFA confirmed on Thursday.

UEFA said the development was as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

It is the second consecutive year Istanbul has been unable to host the showpiece as planned due to the global health crisis with Portugal stepping in.

Last season Lisbon held a mini-tournament culminating in a closed door final, when Bayern Munich defeated Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

But this year, Porto’s Dragao Stadium will welcome 6,000 fans from each team.

The switch was prompted by the UK Government putting Turkey on its “red list” for travel due to coronavirus numbers in the the country.

Those visiting from the UK face a mandatory 10-day hotel quarantine period on their return.

Portugal is on the UK’s “green list” for travel, meaning there is no quarantine period for those returning from the country.

“Fans have had to suffer more than 12 months without the ability to see their teams live and reaching a Champions League final is the pinnacle of club football,” said UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin.

“To deprive those supporters of the chance to see the match in person was not an option and I am delighted that this compromise has been found.”

London’s Wembley was reportedly another option and UEFA confirmed it “discussed moving the match to England.

“But, in spite of exhaustive efforts on the part of the Football Association and the authorities, it was not possible to achieve the necessary exemptions from UK quarantine arrangements.”

Ceferin said UEFA accepted the decision to place Turkey on the UK’s red list for travel “was taken in good faith …

“But it also presented us with a major challenge in staging a final featuring two English teams.”

UEFA has already allocated the 2022 final to St Petersburg, 2023 to Munich and 2024 to London and did not say if, like last year, there would be another reshuffle.

Ceferin did say though that he hopes “to be in Istanbul and Turkey for a Champions League final and many other events in the near future.”

On Thursday UEFA also said Spanish match official Antonio Miguel Mateu Lahoz will referee the contest.

Lahoz, 44, has refereed internationally since 2011 and previously served as fourth official at another all-English final when Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur to win the 2019 Champions League.

Three days earlier Villarreal meet Manchester United in the Europa League final Gdansk, Poland, with 38-year-old Frenchman Clement Turpin as referee.

  • Chelsea forward breaks Messi Champions League record

Chelsea forward breaks Messi Champions League record

Christian Pulisic broke Lionel Messi’s record for how many times he was fouled during Chelsea’s Champions League quarter-final tie against FC Porto.

Thomas Tuchel’s side fell to a 1-0 defeat in Seville on Tuesday night but moved into the semi-finals with a 2-1 aggregate win.

Porto couldn’t find a goal until stoppage time, and instead of targeting a goal during the game, they looked at Pulisic and constantly hacked away at the 22-year-old.

He was fouled 11 times, and as per ESPN, that is the most in a single Champions League match since Messi back in 2011 against Real Madrid.

Pulisic’s positive performance came two days after he had admitted his 2020-21 campaign has not gone exactly to plan.

The forward went several months without scoring and found himself outside of Tuchel’s lineup until gaining favour in recent weeks.

“It has not been an easy season,” Pulisic said to Chelsea’s official website in the build-up to the Porto match.

  • UCL: Chelsea progress to semis despite Taremi stunner

UCL: Chelsea progress to semis despite Taremi stunner

Chelsea hung on to reach the Champions League semi-finals with a 2-1 aggregate win, despite Mehdi Taremi’s stunning overhead kick in added time handing Porto a 1-0 victory in the quarter-final second leg on Tuesday.

The substitute had been responsible for his side’s only attempt on target as they chased a 2-0 deficit from last week’s first leg, but he provided an emphatic response in a cagey game with his acrobatic strike deep into added time.

Thomas Tuchel’s side had a healthy lead from last week’s away game in Seville and had to withstand an intense start from Porto in their home leg back at the Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium, the venue of both games due to Portugal’s coronavirus restrictions.

Porto’s Jesus Corona closed down Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy early on, but failed to make the most of the keeper’s botched pass.

The Mexican winger missed another good chance later in the half when he shuffled past Ben Chilwell in the area only to blast over the crossbar.

Chelsea’s Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic each came close to breaking the deadlock after the interval but the Londoners were more focused on keeping Porto at bay.

“We accepted what was needed, it was a tough, tough fight,” Tuchel told reporters.

“Maybe on the television it was not so nice to watch, but on the sidelines it was a very intense game, a very fast game.

“It was very hard to play against them to escape the pressure but with every minute we did it better and better.”

Taremi’s last-gasp strike prevented them from keeping a clean sheet, but Chelsea still managed to reach the semi-finals of Europe’s top competition for the first time since 2014.

They will meet either Liverpool or Real Madrid in the last four, with the Spaniards holding a 3-1 lead in the other tie ahead of Wednesday’s second leg.

“We’re buzzing, it doesn’t get better than that,” said Chelsea’s Mount.

“We could have played better but just getting through was at the forefront of our minds and we did that tonight.

“We knew as a team we had to work our socks off. We knew what the final result was if we won.”

Porto coach Sergio Conceicao said he was “extremely proud” of his side for going toe-to-toe with the richer Premier League side, who spent more than 10 times as much money as his side in last year’s transfer window.

“We did not let Chelsea’s players, who are of the highest level, create many chances,” he said.

Goal scorer Taremi added: “We played a great game, we showed that we are a great team, but unfortunately my goal wasn’t enough.”

Taremi was suspended for the first leg along with top scorer Sergio Oliveira and started the game on the bench after picking up a knock in Porto’s win at Tondela, at the weekend.

The Iranian striker was introduced midway through the second half and instantly gave his side more bite in attack, becoming their first player to test Mendy, even though his header lacked enough venom to beat the keeper.

Mendy was powerless to stop his thunderous volley, but Porto had less than two minutes of added time to find another goal to force extra-time and Chelsea clung on to their advantage.

  • Tuchel meets with Porto defender after Chelsea win

Tuchel meets with Porto defender after Chelsea win

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel sought out Porto defender Malang Sarr after Wednesday’s Champions League win.

Sarr is on-loan at Porto this season from the Blues.

The Frenchman was signed on a free transfer last summer from Nice and initially started life well at Porto.

But in recent months, the 22-year-old has been resigned to a spot on the bench while there has been a change of management at Stamford Bridge with Tuchel replacing Frank Lampard in January.

At full-time, there were hand slaps and hugs from the likes of Ben Chilwell, Tammy Abraham and N’Golo Kante but the one he seemed the most keen to meet was Tuchel.

Having never met, there was a hand shake and a short conversation in a fleeting moment, reports the Daily Express.

Sarr looks set to return to Stamford Bridge in the summer and will be hoping to break into the first-team under the German manager.
