Sanusi opens Champions League goal account in Porto win

Zaidu Sanusi opened the scoring for Porto with his first Uefa Champions League goal in their 2-0 victory over Marseille on Wednesday.

The Nigeria left-back broke the deadlock in the 39th minute after pouncing on a rebound which came from a corner-kick, Goal reports.

Sanusi was in action for 90 minutes and he produced a man-of-the-match display as Porto sent Marseille packing from the Champions League.

Porto hand Marseille 12th straight Champions League defeat

FC Porto beat Olympique de Marseille 3-0 in Group C on Tuesday, inflicting a record 12th consecutive defeat in the UEFA Champions League on the French club.

The defeat left Andre Villas-Boas’s team on the brink of elimination.

Moussa Marega, Sergio Oliveira with a penalty kick and Luis Diaz found the back of the net, while Dimitri Payet missed an early penalty kick for Marseille.

The result meant FC Porto stay second on six points, three behind Manchester City who maintained their perfect record with a 3-0 win over Olympiakos.

OM, the 1993 champions, have now matched Belgian side Anderlecht’s infamous record in the Champions League from 2003 to 2005.

They have also not scored a goal since Souleymane Diawara did in 2013 in a 2-1 defeat against Borussia Dortmund.

Marseille’s last win in Europe’s premium club competition came in 2012, when they beat Inter Milan 1-0 in the first leg of their last 16 tie.

UCL: Man City stage comeback win over Porto

Manchester City came from behind to make a winning start in the UEFA Champions League Group C on Wednesday with a 3-1 victory over FC Porto at the Etihad Stadium.

FC Porto grabbed a 14th minute lead when Manchester City’s Ruben Dias, a recent signing from Benfica, gave away the ball.

Colombian winger Luis Diaz cut in from the left, burst diagonally across the Manchester City defence and shot into the far bottom corner of Ederson’s goal.

Pep Guardiola’s side were soon back on level terms though.

After Ilkay Gundogan had struck the post, FC Porto defender Pepe bundled over Raheem Sterling in the resulting scramble and Sergio Aguero converted the ensuing penalty kick.

Manchester City were far from their flowing best but went in front in the 65th minute.

A perfect, curling free-kick from Gundogan rose over the wall and beyond the reach of FC Porto goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin.

Substitutes Ferran Torres and Phil Foden then combined to make it 3-1.

The Spaniard collected a return pass from the England midfielder before gliding into space and driving a right foot shot into the far corner.

  • Porto push Man Utd to offer more money for left-back

Porto push Man Utd to offer more money for left-back

Manchester United are locked in talks with Porto for the signing of left-back Alex Telles.

The Brazilian is out of contract next summer and the Portuguese club want to sell to raise funds.

United are close to getting a deal done for the 27-year-old, having agreed personal terms

But according to Correio de Manha, Porto have raised their transfer demands due to several pre-agree clauses.

They owe Galatasaray a sell-on clause of 10 per cent as well as fees to super agents Jorge Mendes and Pini Zahavi.

To cover the costs, the Portuguese have raised their asking price from €20m (£18m) to €27m (£24.7m).

Telles will reportedly sign a five year deal and earn £3.6 million per year if he signs with United.

  • Man Utd agree contract terms with Porto fullback

Manchester United are on the brink of signing Porto fullback Alex Telles.

Telles has a release clause of £36.7million in his current contract at the Portuguese giants.

But Porto are thought to be willing to accept over £10m less in a bid to cash-in while they can – with the 27-year-old out of contract this season, says Correio da Manha.

Telles – who has also attracted interest from Juventus – will therefore be able to negotiate pre-contract terms with European sides from January 1 ahead of a free transfer in July.

Porto are desperate to recoup as much money from the deal as possible.

That is because Telles’ former side Galatasaray will be owed ten per cent of any future transfer.

The one-cap Brazil international’s agents Pini Zahavi and Jorge Mendes also stand to make 15 per cent of the cut as well.

Telles is thought to have already agreed a five-year deal worth around £70,000-a-week with United.

  • Iker Casillas given Porto coaching role

Iker Casillas given Porto coaching role

Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas has been given a role on the club’s coaching staff as he continues his recovery from a heart attack suffered two months ago.

The Portuguese side say Casillas’ role is to “ensure the connection between the players, the coach and management”.
The Spain World Cup winner, 38, suffered “an acute myocardial infarction” during training in May.
“I will try to do my best to help my team-mates,” Casillas, who was able to report for pre-season on 1 July, said.
“The manager talked to me last season when my situation happened and he told me that he wanted me to stay with them, close to the players, near the younger players, because there would be a lot of changes.”
Casillas spent five days in hospital after the heart attack and said at the time he did “not know what the future will be”.
The goalkeeper, who moved to Portugal from Real Madrid in 2015, made 31 league appearances last season as Porto finished second in the league.
He made 725 appearances for Real during a 16-year career at Bernabeu Stadium, helping them win three Champions Leagues and five La Liga titles.
He also captained the Spain team who won the World Cup in 2010, as well as successive European Championships, in 2008 and 2012.

  • Casillas extends contract, wants to retire at FC Porto

Casillas extends contract, wants to retire at FC Porto

Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas says his desire to retire at FC Porto led to his extending his contract with the Portuguese club on Wednesday.

The 37-year-old Casillas has made 149 appearances for Porto since his move from Real Madrid in 2015 and he also won the Primeira Liga title last season.

Porto did not, however, reveal the length of his new contract.

“Today is a very special day. I feel at home in this club,” the 2010 FIFA World Cup winner for Spain told reporters. “I want to stay here until I finish my career as a footballer.

“When they gave me the chance to renew I didn’t have any doubts. My head is solely in FC Porto, in finishing my career here and representing the values of the club and the values of the Porto fans.

“After that, frankly, I don’t know, but I hope I’m always tied to football.”

Porto president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa said Casillas, who has made over 870 club appearances in his career, was among the best goalkeepers the club had.

“Iker Casillas is among the extraordinary goalkeepers that FC Porto always had,” Da Costa said. “And we’re sure that we will always continue with excellent goalkeepers.”

Porto are currently second in the league standings, tied with Benfica on 63 points.

They are also in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals where they will take on last year’s runners-up Liverpool in April.

  • Real Madrid sign €50m defender from Porto

Real Madrid sign €50m defender from Porto

Real Madrid have completed the €50 million (£43m/$57m) signing of Eder Militao from Porto, with the defender set to link up with them on a six-year contract.

Militao, 21, becomes the first signing at Real since Zinedine Zidane returned as head coach on Monday, replacing the sacked Santiago Solari.

The Brazil international, who joined Porto from Sao Paulo in the summer, will join up with his new team-mates at the start of next season.

A statement on the club’s website said: “Real Madrid CF and FC Porto have agreed the transfer of the player Eder Militao, who will be linked to the club during the next six seasons, until June 30, 2025.

“He comes from Porto, where in his first season he has become one of the main protagonists of the Portuguese League. He has been named the best defence of the championship for five consecutive month

“Multi-purpose player, Militao plays central, although he has also occupied the right-back position. It stands out for its speed, placement and ability to anticipate.

“In addition, it has a good aerial game. Qualities that he has worn since his arrival last summer at Oporto, where he has shown a rapid adaptation to European football.”

  • Ex-Madrid defender Pepe returns to Porto

Veteran Portugal defender Pepe has returned to Porto after signing a two-and-a-half year deal, the Portuguese champions said on Tuesday.

Pepe, 35, spent three seasons at Porto from 2004-07, winning two league titles before a 30 million-euros (£27 million) move to Real Madrid.

However, he spent the next decade, winning three La Liga crowns and lifting the Champions League trophy three times.

The rugged defender will be reunited at Porto with former Real Madrid team mate Iker Casillas.

He joined Besiktas in 2017 but rescinded his contract with the Turkish club last month.

Porto are six points clear at the top of the Portuguese top flight.

  • UCL: Liverpool draw Porto to reach quarter-finals since 2009

Liverpool are through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2009 after a 0-0 second-leg draw at Anfield gave them a 5-0 aggregate win over Porto in their last-16 tie.

Sadio Mane acrobatically fired an effort over the bar and hit the post in a generally tame first half that also saw Dejan Lovren head narrowly wide.

Majeed Waris’ strike in the second half was Porto’s only shot on target.

The Reds took a 5-0 lead into the game.

It was always likely this might be a quiet affair with Liverpool having already done the damage in Portugal on Valentines Day.

Jurgen Klopp used the opportunity to rest players for Liverpool’s Premier League match against Manchester United on Saturday, making five changes to the starting line-up.

Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah were named among the substitutes but the Egyptian did have a cameo in the second half as Mane was given a breather.

There was also a chance for Joe Gomez and Adam Lallana to gain further fitness following returns from injury – while Danny Ings enjoyed some rare game-time as a second-half substitute.

Liverpool will discover their quarter-final opponents when the draw is made on 16 March. The ties will be played in the first and second weeks of April.
