Super Eagles to play Portugal in international friendly match

The super Eagles of Nigeria and the A Seleção of Portugal will square up against each other in an international friendly billed to hold in September, 2022.

The Nigeria Football Federation Secretary General, Muhammad Sanusi disclosed this to newsmen in Lagos.

The three-time African champions were initially scheduled to play Guinea Bissau in a double-header Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in the FIFA international break.

But with the qualifiers postponed until March 2023 by the Confederation of African Football last month, the NFF is busy arranging a grade A friendly for the Eagles.

According to Sanusi, a discussion with the Portuguese FA for the friendly game between Nigeria and Portugal is in top gear.

“We are working on arranging a grade A friendly game with Portugal ahead of the next FIFA window,” Sanusi said.

“Following the postponement of the AFCON a friendly game is necessary for the Eagles.

“Arrangements are in full gear and we are close to finalizing the details. Once that is done a statement will be released by the Nigeria Football Federation.”

It will be the first time that Nigeria and Portugal will meet at the senior level even though both countries played against each other three times at the U-20 World Cup with Portugal winning all three meetings (twice in 1989 and 2013).

The September international friendly will serve as a warm-up game for the Europeans who are in the same group as the Black Stars of Ghana who booted Nigeria out of the World Cup race.

The chapter noted that the conferment of the highest National Honour, Collar of the Order of Prince Henry, on the president in Lisbon on June 30, exemplifies him “as a man of integrity and widely respected.”

“The Award which is reserved for Portuguese Heads of State, and some distinguished foreign recipients, is a testament of the quality leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari and his laudable achievements in critical sectors in the last seven years.

“Today, President Muhammadu Buhari is the first Nigerian Head Of Government to be so honoured.

“It is in the light of these achievements that the APC Diaspora Chapter in South Africa led by Engr. Bola Babarinde is celebrating our President for flying the flag higher and making Nigerians home and abroad proud of our country,” it said.

According to it, the positive implication of the visit for the country is the renewed diplomatic and economic ties between Nigeria and Portugal.

The group noted that the visit would further cement bilateral relations on trade and investment between the two countries.

The chapter added that the visit would also attract foreign direct investments to Nigeria; making Nigeria the investment destination of choice and making Nigerians proud of their country amongst the comity of Nations.

The group said that the president’s engagement with members of the Nigerian community in Portugal on matters affecting them and developments at their homeland had proven this.

“The Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Honourable Minister of Youths and Sports, Sunday Dare with his Portuguese counterpart will also assist Nigeria in the engagement of our youths, create employment and increase economic activities in that sector.

“The first MoU will see Nigeria and Portugal engage in fruitful exchange programmes and facilitate expertise transfer for sports development amongst other areas, while the second is on youth capacity building and development with the European nation,” it said.

Buhari, rather urged them to always promote Nigeria’s unity.

The president made the call at a Seminar between Nigeria and Portugal businesses during the State Visit to Portugal.

President Buhari also pledged Nigeria’s commitment to reducing marine plastic pollution from land-based sources and activities.

The president gave the assurance in a speech delivered on his behalf by the Minister of State for Environment, Sharon Ikeazor, at the 2022 UN Ocean Conference, in Lisbon, Portugal, on Friday.

While highlighting Nigeria’s effort at ensuring the health and sustainability of oceans, seas and marine resources, Buhari said that a national policy on plastic pollution and the road map on tackling solid and plastic waste management had been formulated and established.

Buhari, who lauded the UN for leading the process of effective ocean governance, said that Nigeria had mainstreamed ocean management into the economy, constituting a Presidential Committee on Sustainable Blue Economy.

He also announced that Nigeria had embarked on creation of two marine protected areas.

Also, the Permanent Secretary, State House, Abuja, Tijjani Umar, on July 1 revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari would inaugurate new Presidential Wing of the State House Clinic in December.

Umar, who made this known at the State House SERVICOM Unit Awards for the Year 2021 in Abuja, revealed that the construction work on the befitting health facility had already reached 75 per cent stage of completion.

According to him, the multi-billion naira medical facility will be one of the legacies the Buhari administration will leave behind for incoming administrations in the country.

Before departing for Lisbon on Tuesday, the president had held official engagements  including the swearing in of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) on June 27.

The swearing of Ariwoola, the next most senior in the hierarchy of the Supreme Court, as the new CJN followed the resignation of Justice Tanko Muhammed on health ground.

The president also on the same day met with Gov. Hope Uzodinma of Imo, who updated him on security and socio-economic developments in the state.

  • Buhari thanks Portugal for support in ensuring peace in Africa

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday night expressed appreciation to Portugal for the deployment of weapons and training of military personnel in ensuring peace in Africa.

The President’s spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu, in a statement on Friday, said Buhari gave the commendation at a State Dinner held in the National Palace Ajuda, Lisbon, the Portuguese capital.

Buhari lauded President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa for deploying troops for peacekeeping in the Central African Republic, monitoring political developments and providing assistance to some countries in Africa, including Equatorial Guinea, Cape Verde and Mozambique.

The president said at  the dinner attended by the President of the Portuguese National Assembly, Augusto Santos Silva, and Prime Minister Antonio Costa that the Nigerian Government has made it a priority to tackle the issue of insecurity in Nigeria, the ECOWAS, and the Sahel.

He added that this would not have been successful without the regional as well as global partners.

‘‘The Boko Haram insurgency in the North-eastern part of Nigeria is being tackled through the efforts of government, as well as the Multinational Joint Task Force (MJTF) of member countries,’’ he said.

Buhari expressed optimism that his State Visit would further strengthen the goodwill and collaboration between the two countries.

He noted that the establishment of a Joint Commission, which is one of the main priorities of the visit, would further promote the full realisation of the objectives of bilateral relations.

He added that this would slso achieve concrete, specific and viable projects and programmes for the benefit of citizens of the two countries.

‘‘Today, Portugal imports about 60 percent of its gas from Nigeria which makes it our second-largest market in Europe.

‘‘There is still more that can be achieved between the two countries, especially with the current Russia-Ukraine war which has disrupted steady gas supplies to Europe.

‘‘Furthermore, Nigeria wants to see trade diversified to non-oil products such as agriculture, power projects, renewable energy and pharmaceuticals where a lot could be achieved,’’ he said.

The president emphasised the need to revive the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) and finalize all pending bilateral agreements so as to boost economic activities and movement of people between the two countries.

He further described Nigeria as one of the most attractive destinations for investment in Africa, adding that his Government is prioritizing building a business-friendly environment.

‘‘Nigeria is part of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA) – the largest free trade area in the world.

”With a population of over 200 million mainly young men and women, Nigeria is a natural and attractive hub for foreign investment and one-stop market access to over 50 countries,’’ he said.

The Nigerian leader welcomed the Business Forum organized during the visit and the signing of many Memoranda of Understanding between the two countries’ investment promotion agencies and chambers of commerce.

He described the signing of the agreements ‘‘as excellent foundations for increased bilateral trade.’’

Buhari also commended his Portuguese counterpart for extending his country’s engagement with Africa and African issues beyond Lusophone countries.

‘‘In that context, I wish to remind us that in addition to giving our former capital, Lagos, its name, the Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive in what later became Nigeria, even before the British.

‘‘During that time, the Benin Kingdom had diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of Portugal. The bodyguards of the Oba of Benin were sent from Portugal.

‘‘Today, there are streets in some states in Nigeria that still bear Portuguese names. This shows a strong bond that has endured a long time between our two countries,’’ he said.

Italy miss another World Cup as Portugal, Wales, Sweden advance

European champions Italy will miss a second straight FIFA World Cup after being shocked 1-0 in stoppage time by North Macedonia in a play-off on Thursday.

Four-time world champions Italy dominated the entire game in Palermo and recorded 32-4 attempts at goal but only a few were on target.

Aleksandar Trajkovski did better on the other end when he found the net with a low shot from 25 metres into the left corner two minutes into added-on time.

“It is difficult to explain. There is a great disappointment, even today (Thursday) we played a good game but we couldn’t score,” Italy’s veteran defender Giorgio Chiellini, who came on late, said.

“From September to today we have made mistakes and we have paid for them. I am proud of a team that has given everything.

“But it is clear that we are destroyed and crushed, a great void will remain within us.”

While Italy and their coach Roberto Mancini will be licking their wounds some eight months after winning the Euro title, North Macedonia face a deciding match against Portugal on Tuesday.

They will be looking for a place at their first World Cup finals, set to start Nov. 21 in Qatar.

“The way that July of last year was the most beautiful achievement of my professional life, I think this is also the greatest disappointment,” Mancini said after the match, leaving questions about his future with the national team pending.

“We’ll see, at the moment the disappointment is too great, for everyone, to talk about the future,” Mancini said.

Also through to the play-off finals to join Portugal and North Macedonia are Wales and Sweden.

Portugal beat Turkey 3-1 in Porto, after Turkey veteran Burak Yilmaz missed a penalty kick for a 2-2 equaliser with six minutes left.

The hosts got a 15th-minute lead when Otavio slotted home from a tight right angle in his home stadium off Bernardo Silva’s shot against the post.

Liverpool’s Diogo Jota doubled the lead in the 42nd minute.

Turkey were back in the game in the 64th minute from Yilmaz’ low shot off Cengiz Ünder’s through ball.

But Yilmaz then fired an 84th-minute penalty kick over the bar after Enes Ünal was adjudged upon video review to have been hit by José Fonte.

Matheus Nunes then wrapped up matters on the other end.

Gareth Bale hardly sees any playing time at Real Madrid but he scored a brace in a 2-1 win over Austria to keep alive Wales’ dream of playing at a first World Cup in 64 years.

Bale curled a free-kick into the top right corner in the 25th minute in Cardiff and smashed the second into the same place with a diagonal drive six minutes after the restart.

But they had to sweat it out after Marcel Sabitzer’s shot was deflected by Ben Davis over the diving goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey.

Wales will play for a spot in Qatar in June, with their opponents either Scotland or Ukraine whose game was postponed after the Russian invasion.

Sweden beat the Czech Republic 1-0 in extra time from Robin Quaison to set up a Tuesday date with Poland who advanced by walkover after the suspension of their opponents Russia.

Luxembourg claimed a second win in World Cup qualifying for the first time in their history in the day’s other match, beating the Azeris 2-1.

Ronaldo should go for imposter Felix – Roy Keane

Manchester United great Roy Keane slammed Atletico Madrid attacker Joao Felix after Portugal’s Euros defeat to Belgium.

Thorgan Hazard’s 42nd minute goal was enough to send Belgium through to the quarter finals, despite Portugal creating several good chances throughout the game.

One of those chances fell to substitute Felix who scuffed his shot wide in stoppage time after Cristiano Ronaldo neatly laid the ball off for him.

Talking about Portugal’s misses, Keane said on ITV: “I get really annoyed when they’re quality players.

“There’s no excuse to be leaning back and just missing the target, just test the goalkeeper because these are top players there’s no getting around it.

“Felix when he came on, that guy is an imposter. He comes on and the country needs you, just hit the target, he’s what, £100million?

“If I was Ronaldo you’d certainly be going for him in the dressing room.”
