Anambra lawmakers, workers test positive for COVID-19, Assembly shut

The Anambra House of Assembly on Wednesday shut the assembly complex for three weeks after some lawmakers and members of staff tested positive for COVID-19.

The assembly invited the state COVID-19 team on January 19 to conduct compulsory test on members and workers.

The measure followed the reported spike in the number of cases of the pandemic in the state.

The Speaker, Mr Uche Okafor, adjourned the house after a resolution for a break was reached during an emergency plenary.
Okafor said: “The COVID-19 team in the Ministry of Health came last Thursday to take samples of lawmakers and staff members.
“Unfortunately, when the results came out, some were negative but many were positive.

“As an institution, we need to lead by example, hence we have decided that the assembly complex be shut for three weeks.

“This is to allow the ministry to do contact tracing of those found to be positive for the virus.”

The speaker said that it was expected that the complex, including the offices and surrounding, along with the houses of those who tested positive, would be fumigated.

“There will be no plenary or committee work and we appeal that those who need to go on isolation should please do so,” he said.
Also at plenary, the house screened and confirmed 21 persons nominated by Gov. Willie Obiano for appointment as Local Government Transition Committee Chairmen.

The house approved a three-month tenure for the committee, subject to renewal or fresh appointments by the governor.

Tinubu not positive for COVID-19, currently on vacation in UK – Son, Seyi

Seyi Tinubu, son of APC National leader, Bola Tinubu, has denied reports that his father has tested positive for COVID19 and is receiving treatment in France.

There have been reports making the rounds on social media that the former Lagos State governor is currently receiving treatment for COVID19 in France after testing positive for the virus.

Reacting, Seyi in a post via his Instastory on Sunday quoted his father’s spokesperson, Tunde Rahman, as saying Bola Tinubu has done the COVID-19 test 15 times and all the tests have returned negative.

According to him, his father is currently in the UK taking a vaccine instead.

“According to Tunde Rahman, spokesperson for Bola Tinubu, Asiwaju is not in Paris and he doesn’t have Coronavirus.

“That’s a lie from the pit of hell because my father is very ok neither does he have the virus.

“If you must know he has done the COVID-19 rest 15 times, each time he travels and mingles with many people though he always wore a face mask.

“He is currently in London taking a vacation and there’s no iota of truth in the false information being shared,” he wrote.

U.S. nurse tests positive for COVID-19 after receiving vaccine

An ICU nurse in San Diego, who had received Pfizer Inc. vaccine’s shot against COVID-19 on December 18, has tested positive for the virus.

Matthew W, a 45-year-old nurse in San Diego, told ABC News San Diego affiliate KGTV that after receiving the vaccine he had only experienced arm soreness as a side-effect of the vaccine.

However, six days later after working a shift in the COVID-19 unit, he said he had chills, muscle pain and fatigue.

A coronavirus test confirmed him positive for COVID-19, he said.

Following this incident, Dr Christian Ramers, an infectious disease specialist with the Family Health Centre of San Diego, told KGTV that this was not unexpected.

“We know from the vaccine clinical trials that it is going to take about 10 to 14 days for you to start to develop protection from the vaccine.

“That first dose we think gives you somewhere around 50 per cent and you need that second dose to get up to 95 per cent,” Ramers further explained.

There is another possibility that the nurse likely contracted COVID-19 before the vaccination but did not rule out the opposite, the expert added.
