TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports update on the situation as the lack of water and massive power outage enters day three in the Federal Capital Territory , FCT.

One of such residents, Mr Fatai Abdulkareem told TNG that”if Government can’t provide us basic necessities such as light and water they should just tell us they have failed.

“Already there’s too much hunger in the land and the number one citizen is on medical tourism abroad.

“How long will this suffering continue when Government has maintained deaf ears to our plight.

He further stressed that” the last time we had water shortage they promised to fix the trunk line and now we are back to the terrible situation that we have to buy a Jerry can of water for N250.

Another resident in Kubwa spoke in a similar vein condemnng the FG with unprintable graffiti.

He said” do we have a government that listens please stop bothering me with questions that will not generate any tangible answer from a non-existent Government.

Just in: Blackout as Nigeria’s national grid collapses again

The nation’s power grid has collapsed again, plunging parts of the country into a total blackout for hours on Sunday.

Two of the power distribution companies in the country, Kaduna Electric and Eko Electricity Distribution Company, announced the national grid collapse on Sunday afternoon.

Kaduna Electric, in a message to its customers via its Twitter handle, said, “We regret to inform you that the loss of power supply in our franchise – Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states – is as a result of the collapse of the national grid. The collapse occurred at about 11:26 am this morning.

“Supply shall be restored as soon as the grid is back up. We regret all inconveniences,” the Disco added.

EKEDC, in a text message sent to its customers, said, “Dear customer, there is a system collapse on the national grid. Supply will be restored as soon as the issue is resolved. Apologies for the inconvenience.”

The grid, which is being managed by government-owned Transmission Company of Nigeria, has continued to suffer system collapse over the years amid a lack of spinning reserve that is meant to forestall such occurrences.

Spinning reserve is the generation capacity that is online but unloaded and that can respond within 10 minutes to compensate for generation or transmission outages.

According to IE, the outage will affect customers resident in Odogunyan, Agbede, Mega Steel and ChikiChiki, Agodo, Industrial, Centex, Itaoluwo and Cantonment communities.

  • Looting, arson, as major power outage hits New York

A major power outage on Saturday evening hit parts of New York, the commercial capital of the United States.

The blackout, which occurred in Midtown Manhattan, the city’s economic and administrative centre, disrupted traffic light, elevator and subway services.

This resulted in heavy traffic gridlock in affected streets and avenues, leaving many commuters stranded.

Local media reports say the outage occurred just before 7 p.m. (midnight Nigerian time) following a fire outbreak at a power substation on West 49th Street.

Con Edison, the city’s leading electricity service provider, said no fewer than 45,000 customers were without power in the affected area.

In a tweet, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) said various underground stations were affected.

It added that trains were bypassing stations affected by the power failure, and that service into Manhattan from areas such as Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, would be limited.

The Mayor of New York, Mr Bill de Blasio, said the city’s emergency management agency was working with the police and fire service to respond to affected areas.

Coincidentally, Saturday marked the 42nd anniversary of a major blackout in 1977 which affected much of the city for 48 hours.

Reports say that incident resulted in widespread looting, arson and other criminal activities.

As at the time of filing this report at 8.30 p.m. (1.30 a.m. in Nigeria) power had not been restored, but Con Edison said it was working hard to remedy the situation as soon as possible.

The Governor of New York, Mr Andrew Cuomo, issued a statement saying he was hopeful power would be restored by midnight (5 a.m. Nigerian time).

Later in a live television interview, Cuomo said he had ordered the deployment of more police officers and paratroopers to help in traffic control and tighten security in the city.
He said the spread of the outage from the substation where it started showed that the power company failed to install circuit breaker.

The incident triggered social media reports of ordinary citizens directing traffic at some intersections.

The New York Fire Department said it received reports of people stuck in elevators on the Upper West Side and subway passengers stuck on trains.

Several events, including an ongoing concert by American pop star, Jennifer Lopez, at Madison Square Garden, one of the affected places, were cancelled.

  • We are not responsible for persistent power outage – TCN

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on Friday announced that the upgrading of its transmission lines in Kaduna State was not the cause of persistent power outages in the city.

TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Mrs Ndidi Mbah made this known in a statement.

She said TCN was not carrying out maintenance work as alleged in some quarters but was upgrading its Mando–Kakuri transmission lines from 80MW to 240MW.

The general manager said the upgrade was to significantly improve power supply to Kaduna and its environs.

According to her, the transmission lines upgrade is carried out only on weekends, the TCN is not responsible for any outage beyond the period.

Mbah said the TCN’s decision to undertake upgrade of the transmission lines on weekends was to reduce inconvenience to electricity customers.

She said the upgrade could cause power supply interruption to only electricity customers in Kaduna South during the weekends for nine hours.

She said doubling of the transformer capacity of Kaduna town transmission station from 120MVA to 240MVA, in line with its grid expansion plan resulted in the upgrade of the lines.

On completion, there would be increased electricity supply to Kaduna State through the Mando-Kakuri transmission line,’’ she said.

Mbah said the upgrade of the transmission line was the only way the impact of the two additional new 60MVA power transformers could be felt by electricity consumers in Kaduna.

According to her, TCN is committed to the execution of its grid expansion plan, in line with Federal Government’s policy on incremental power.

The Mando-Kakuri transmission lines upgrade in Kaduna is an integral part of this process and when completed, it will boost power transmission capacity to distribution load centres supplying power to Kaduna South.’’

Flood: Eko Disco announces power outage in Ikoyi, Victoria Island

Following the incessant rainfall that left some areas in Lagos state flooded yesterday, the management of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) on Sunday announced that there would be a power outage in Ikoyi, Victoria Island and its environs as the company’s injection substations and equipment submerged in the flood.

Mr Godwin Idemudia, General Manager, Corporate Communications, EKEDC, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the company was having challenges in almost all its injection substations as a result of the flood from heavy rains on Saturday.

According to Idemudia, some of EKEDC transformers in the areas have been submerged.

The general manager said that the management of the company had directed that transmission be ‘deloaded’ in the affected areas for safety.

He said that the injection substations affected by the flood included Lekki Transmission Station, Agungi, Lekki, Ademola and Anifowoshe.

“Victoria Garden City, Water Front, Maroko and Oniru Injection Stations are completely out.

“We need to look at the extent of the effect of the flood on our equipment.

“However, we are presently working round the clock to restore supply to our esteemed customers,” he said.

Idemudia appealed to the customers to show understanding over the inconvenience the outage had caused.

TheNewsGuru.com had earlier published photos and videos of several areas of Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Lekki and Victoria Garden City, VGC, areas of Lagos state submerged by the flood, due to the heavy rainfall experienced in the state.

EKEDC spokesman, Godwin Idemudia, said in a statement that the outage would affect Ikoyi, Victoria Island and parts of Lagos Island from Wednesday to Sunday.
