Nigeria needs prayers to overcome challenges – Omo-Agege

The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has said Nigeria needs prayers to overcome her current challenges.

Speaking on Sunday at the First Session of the Fifth Synod of the Diocese of Sapele (Anglican Communion), Okpe Archdeaconry, Senator Omo-Agege called on Nigerians not to despair over the challenges confronting the nation.

The event which held at St. John’s Anglican Church, Orerokpe, Delta state, was graced by the governor of Delta State, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa; the lawmaker representing Ughelli North/Ughelli South/Udu Federal Constituency, Rev. Speaking on the theme, “The Lord is my Strength and Stronghold”, the Deputy President of the Senate urged the church to continue to pray for the country.

“We need the intervention of the church, we need prayers for this country. We are nothing without God. No matter what we do, if we don’t have the blessings and anointing of God, it is to no avail.

“I want to urge the church to continue to pray for Nigeria. There is a lot more that we need to do to protect our citizens,” he said.

In his homily, the Anglican Bishop, Diocese of Lagos, Rt. Rev. Humphrey Olumakaiye, enjoined Nigerians not to lose hope but to have faith in God for solutions to their problems.

Quoting from the Bible’s Books of Psalm 46:1-7; 27:1; 21:6; 16:11; Isaiah 26:3 and John 16:33, the guest preacher assured that Jesus Christ has not changed from caring and loving his followers.

According to him, the Church has become the last hope of the hopeless. He enjoined the church to preach hope to their followers to bring them back to the society.

God’s presence, according to the cleric, brings joy, spiritual growth, healing, divine protection and it helps to fulfill our destiny.

On his part, the chief host and Bishop of Sapele Diocese (Anglican Communion), Rt. Rev. Blessing Erifeta, noted that as long as there are challenges and problems facing the people, churches would continue to proliferate in order to give hope to the people.

Eid-El-Fitri: Saraki greets Muslims, urges continuous prayer for Nigeria

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and across the world on the successful completion of this year’s Ramadan fasting and the consequent Eid-El-Fitri festival.

Saraki in a statement signed by Yusuph Olaniyonu, his Special Adviser and head of his Media Office, also advised Nigerians to continue with their closeness to Almighty Allah and their prayers for His intervention in the affairs of the country, even after the obligatory fasting period.

He noted that Ramadan did not just symbolize having a positive attitude during the fasting period but represents a total change towards becoming good citizens who comply with the law and demonstrate patriotism at all times.

“We should refrain from returning to our old habits and become responsible citizens who pray for the country at all times and play our roles in the quest to entrench the fear of God, discipline, unity, development, equity, justice and inclusiveness in the polity.

“The current situation in our country requires sincere change of mindset by all Nigerians. We should use this post-Ramadan period and the lessons we learnt from the fasting period to steer clear of any action which does not bode well for our country. This is a period when we all need to pray to Allah to once again pull the country back from the precipice.

“ With the level of insecurity and economic crisis which have combined to worsen the rate of poverty in Nigeria, all Nigerians must unite and demonstrate patriotism that will help our country overcome the present challenges.

“Once again, I commend our security agencies at the frontline and pray that Almighty God will protect and give them victory over the insurgents and other non-state actors inflicting violence on our country. May Allah heal our land of any form of affliction”, Saraki added.

Inter- Faith group declares spiritual victory over Covid-19, Boko Haram

The National Inter-Faith and Religious Organization for Peace (NIFROP) has declared spiritual victory over COVID-19 and Boko Haram insurgency in the country.

National Coordinator, Bishop Sunday Garuba, made this declaration on Saturday during the grand finale of the 30-day fast and prayer for divine intervention on coronavirus and the end of Boko Haram/ capture of Abubakar Shekau.

The rampaging COVID-19 has taken a grip on the entire universe with over five million persons infected and almost 350,000 dead according to John Hopkins University.

In Nigeria alone, more than 7,000 persons have tested positive while above 200 persons succumbed to the contagion.

Unfortunately, though, the pandemic comes at a time the Nigerian military is making giant strides in its final clearance operation against Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists in the northeast.

However, Bishop Garuba believes both would soon come to an end in the country as revealed to him and his group during their 30 days intensive prayer and fast.

According to the cleric, “ Nigeria is indeed victorious and we shall suffer no affliction for God is our refuge and strength”.

He added that due to NIFROP’s composition of both Christians and Muslims, their strong faith in one supreme God would see the country overcome coronavirus and Boko Haram.

While affirming that COVID-19 shall fade away in a matter of time, the clergyman, however, urged Nigerians not to be afraid rather remain steadfast and resolute.

  • COVID-19: No Ramadan lectures, congregational prayers this year, Sultan tells Muslims

The Jama’tul Nasril Islam (JNI) has said that there would not be the annual Tafsir or congregational prayers in mosques during this year’s Ramadan due to coronavirus pandemic.

The Secretary-General, JNI, Dr Khalid Aliyu, made the announcement in a statement issued on Monday in Kaduna.

Aliyu advised Islamic faithful to pray with their families at home and stay safe.

“This is a Ramadan with a difference as most people will be under lockdown,’’ he said.

The JNI scribe said that in spite of the challenges arising from physical and social distancing, Tafsir and other religious teachings would be held using various information technology (IT) platforms.

He mentioned such platforms as Facebook, Skype, YouTube, Zoom, etc., to live stream preaching sessions.

“Reliable Information and Communication Technology (ICT) professionals will be consulted for proper guidance,” he said.

According to him, JNI under the leadership of His Eminence, Alhaji Mohammad Abubakar, felicitates in advance with the Muslim Ummah on the forthcoming month of Ramadan.

“Unequivocally, Ramadan is the month of the Qur’an, the month of supplication and Allah’s remembrance, the month of Zakah and giving the poor dues and charity and the month of standing in the night for prayers

“Hence, they (the poor) will certainly be in dire need of assistance, because of the economic realities and the attendant suffocating inflationary trends.

“Our spirit of generosity should be fully activated in higher proportion so as to ameliorate the sufferings of the poor in our midst by providing them with food and other necessities.

“In this regard, the JNI calls upon those who have since planned for this year’s lesser pilgrimage to channel those resources to charity as the Umrah cannot be possible in the current global pandemic reality.

“Expectedly, as role models, we should be seen to be doing exactly like Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), bearing in mind that the month of Ramadan is fast approaching,’’ the JNI Secretary-General said.

Aliyu called on governments at all levels to assist in making life bearable for the downtrodden.

“Due to the overwhelming eruption of the novel COVID-19 pandemic the Ummah’s enthusiasm needs to be reinvigorated as against what obtains of palpable fear over the pandemic outbreak.

“Nevertheless, JNI wishes to re-awaken the collective resolution of the Muslims to fully prepare so as to reap the benefits therein in the blessed month,” he said

According to him, one of the significant aspects of this period is the issue of moon-sighting that has over the years recorded significant improvement and should be sustained.

“Therefore, Muslims are called upon to watch out for the crescent and communicate same to the nearest Muslim authority close by – if sighted, for onward transmission to His Eminence for final announcement after the necessary confirmation.

“Muslims should resolve and make proper plan to intensify efforts in the Tilawah (recitation) of the glorious Qur’an, especially as we observe the stay at home policy,’’ he said.

The JNI also commended philanthropists, captains of industry, and corporate bodies who donated money and relief items to support the federal and some state governments at this critical economic period.

Aliyu said that gesture remained very indelible to the JNI “and we pray that they be compensated accordingly by Allah.’’

He urged Muslims to fervently pray for an end to the myriad challenges bedeviling the world and Nigeria in particular, and to also seek Allah’s interventions for better well-being and prosperity.

“We also pray for our leaders to be well-guided and foresighted, they should equally fear Allah and remember that they will one day account for their respective stewardship.

“As such, they should as a matter of patriotism ensure that they promote equal distribution of resources and maintain peace in all their respective utterances and actions,’’ he said.

JNI, Aliyu said, was using the occasion to appeal to adherents to collectively condemn abuses of extremists in thoughts and actions on any matter, as warned by the Prophet (PBUH),” he said

JNI remains resolute to support, as well as partner relevant agencies, government and other stakeholders in mitigating the adverse effects of the novel COVID-19 in Nigeria.

“We appeal to state governments to synergise and complement each other properly in addressing the spread of the pandemic in Nigeria,’’ the scribe said.

  • Birthday Moments: How I felt when my old girlfriend came to me for prayers – Adeboye

Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye is marking his 78th birthday today. His church members who call him Daddy G.O, that is General Overseer (of the Redeemed Christian Church of God) are paying tributes to him. Politicians, captains of industry and many others who admire him are already showering praises on him like confetti.

In other words, it goes without saying that Adeboye is admired all over because of his pious disposition. He preaches against sin. However, the Pastor is humble and blunt enough to reveal that he was as lustful as every raw young man. He had girlfriends too.

This was revealed by Bisi Daniel, journalist, writer, public relations consultant and author of Stories of Pastor E.A. Adeboye, in a tribute (“Pastor Adeboye at 78: A journalist’s experience with him”).

    In Adeboye’s own words:

“Before I was born again, I was a very rotten boy. I had two things going for me that made it extremely easy to have girlfriends. I was a sportsman and I was also a photographer. I’m yet to meet a lady who can say no when you say you want to snap her; I haven’t met one, particularly if you have the right kind of language.

Things like “Ahh, whoa! What am I looking at? Where has this sun been hidden? I have never seen this sunshine before. Do you mind if I record you?

You know the elders have a saying; they say the mouth of the old woman looks like she never sucked breast. Hmm, when you see Pastor Adeboye you think he was born a saint. No, no, no, Thank God for His power to change. I had so many girl friends that at a stage I didn’t even know the number. And for each girlfriend there was a birthday. I had so many birthdays, one birthday for each girlfriend. I am just telling you this to let you know that God can pick one up from the pit of hell and make him or her His servant. Among all these girlfriends, there was one that was closest to me.

But after some time we separated: she went her way, I went my way. She got married, I got married. But in the meantime, I had become born again.

The lady had a child that was born lame, so somebody told her if she took the child to a certain pastor he would pray for the child to walk. So she came to the mission house.

I was in the living room but she saw some people on the veranda who asked for the pastor and was told I was inside. So she opened the door and saw me. Laughter, laughter, laughter.

And you know what old flames do, ‘Aaaah long time no see? Where have you been, how has life been treating you, excetra, excetra?

When we finished, she said, ‘I want to see the pastor.’

I said, ‘Yes, I am the pastor.’

    ‘You?’ She asked, surprised

    ‘Yes,’ I said

She shouted, ‘You will pray and God will answer?’

Let somebody shout Hallelujah! I prayed and she got her miracle.”

Now Adeboye sticks only to wife, Folu

    The Man, Adeboye

Adeboye was born on 2 March, 1942 in Ifewara, near Ife, Osun State, Nigeria. He went to the University of Nigeria, (UNN) in Nsukka but because of the Nigeria Civil War, he completed his first degree in the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics in 1967. That same year, according to writings by his admirers on him, he married Foluke Adenike. They have four children namely: Adeolu Adeboye, Bolu Adubi (nee Adeboye), Leke Adeboye and Dare Adeboye.

“In 1969, he obtained a master’s degree in hydrodynamics drom the University of Lagos . He joined the Redeemed Christian Church of God in 1973 and began interpreting Yoruns to English by Pastor Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi. In 1975, he obtained a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Lagos. He holds a position as Professor of Mathematics at University of Lagos.

He was ordained a pastor of Redeemed Church in 1977. He became General Overseer of the church in 1981. For three years, he filled the role part-time at University of Ilorin before giving up his university position to preach full-time.”
