Anambra govt. bursts “baby factory”, rescue 6 pregnant teenagers

The Anambra State Government in collaboration with security operatives on Wednesday rescued six pregnant teenagers from ‘a baby-making factory’ at Umunya in Oyi Local Government Area of the state.

Dr. Afam Obidike, the state Commissioner for Health, told journalists after the raid that the baby factory where babies were being sold had the name “Mother and Child Hospital and Maternity”.

The baby factory is located at No 1, school road, Tansian University in Umunya.

Obidike said that the state’s Health Facility, Accreditation and Monitoring Unit arrived the facility for its routine inspection when it burst the operation.

He said that the nurses they saw locked up the facility and ran away after they requested to see the doctor on duty to find out why the facility was not registered with the state government.

According to him, security operatives including OCHA-Brigade, Civil Defence Corps, and the Police later assisted the monitoring team in gaining access into the facility.

“When we gained access into the facility, what we saw was shocking. We discovered six underaged pregnant girls, within ages 14, 15,16, 17, and 21 years, allegedly camped against their wish.

“We interviewed these girls and they told us that they were being camped by one self-acclaimed doctor, who they identified as Mr Odili Ossai from Delta State, now at large.

“They said when they deliver the babies, Ossai, who owns the facility, will sell the babies.

“Five persons have been arrested in connection with the `factory’ and the police will carry out further investigation,” he said.

Obidike reaffirmed the commitment of Gov. Charles Soludo’s administration in stamping out fake and quack hospitals across the state.

“Under the state’s Health Facility Accreditation and Monitoring Unit, we have equally established the state’s Illegal and Anti-Quackery Taskforce Team.

“The primary objective of the taskforce team is to eliminate illegal and unethical sharp practices within health facilities and enhance the quality of healthcare services in the state.

“The state government is determined to eliminate all illegal health facilities and quackery.

“It is also worthy to note that the state ministry of health has successfully built a database and website, where people can easily have access to approved and registered health facilities in the state,” he said.

The commissioner urged residents to report any illegal activities, malpractices or concerns related to healthcare services in the state.

Also speaking, Dr Ugochukwu Chukwulobelu, Director, Medical Services, cautioned other fake and quack doctors operating in the state to shut down immediately.

According to him, if caught, they will face the full wrath of the law.

  • Crocodile found to have made herself pregnant

Crocodile found to have made herself pregnant

A crocodile in Costa Rica has made herself pregnant, the first recorded instance of a “virgin birth” in the reptile species.

The crocodile was kept in captivity in a zoo and had no contact with males but a fully formed foetus was discovered inside one of her eggs.

The foetus was 99.9% genetically identical to the mother, confirming it had no father.

Virgin births, or parthenogenesis, have been documented in birds, lizards, snakes and fish, but never before in crocodiles.

According to sky news, the crocodile in question was 18 when she laid a clutch of eggs in 2018.

Seven of the eggs appeared to be viable and were incubated but when none hatched after three months they were opened. One contained a stillborn crocodile foetus.

Researchers from Virginia Tech who specialise in parthenogenesis analysed the foetus and their findings were published in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters.

They said the discovery suggests virgin births could be happening in crocodiles without anyone realising.

“It is not uncommon for captive reptiles to lay clutches of eggs, given the period of isolation from mates, these would normally be considered non-viable and discarded.

“These findings therefore suggest that eggs should be assessed for potential viability when males are absent.

“Furthermore, given that (virgin births) can occur in the presence of potential mates, instances of this may be missed when reproduction occurs in females co-habited with males.”

The scientists said the discovery offers “tantalising insights” into the possible reproductive capabilities of extinct relatives of crocodiles, particularly dinosaurs.

My mother in-law told me to get her daughter pregnant before marriage, man tells court

A divorce-seeking man, Basiru Sodiq, on Wednesday told a Mapo Grade ‘A’ Customary Court in Ibadan that his mother in-law begged him to get her daughter, Amdalat pregnant before marriage.

Sodiq, made this known in his counter argument against his wife’s allegation of lack of care and gross irresponsibility leveled against him.

”I acted according to the wishes of my mother in-law, She later did a 90 degrees and denied me in the presence of the entire household.

“I don’t actually know what went wrong. Her parents simply told me that they will never allow their daughter to be with me.

“She also denied me access to the child,” Sodiq said.

Amdalat, a fashion designer, had earlier informed the court that her estranged lover was not responsible, hence, not caring for her and the three-year-old child.

“My lord, since I gave birth, Sodiq only gave me N1,500 twice and a baby dress, he kept dodging his responsibilities.

Delivering judgment, the court’s President, Mrs S.M. Akintayo held that there was nothing to dissolve between Sodiq and Amdalat because there was no marriage in the first place.

Akintayo said that there was no evidence before the court that bride price and other important things necessary for a marriage to be described as a customary one were presented by the respondent.

She however, granted the order awarding custody of the child to the petitioner.

Akintayo also directed Sodiq to pay a monthly feeding allowance of N10,000 for the child’s upkeep.

The court’s president directed the duo to be jointly responsible for the child’s education and other welfare.
