  • Xavi opens up on Premier League ambitions

Xavi opens up on Premier League ambitions

Barcelona legend Xavi has revealed he would “love to work in the Premier League” after nearly a year without a job.

It’s been nearly 12 months since the 45-year-old was dismissed by Barcelona, the club he spent 17-years at as a first-team player.

His replacement, Hansi Flick, has gone on to turn the Catalan giants into one of the most exciting sides in Europe.

Xavi has been linked with several big jobs, including Man United, since his dismissal, but he is yet to nail down a new position.

In an interview with The Athletic, Xavi couldn’t hide his admiration for the Premier League and admitted he would love to manage in the English top tier.

“Of course? Where, I don’t know,” the Spaniard said when quizzed about his future. “There’s no hurry for me, but I’d like a good project. Like, ‘You have four years to work and make a project’.

“I’d love to work in the Premier League because I love the passion there. In Spain, it’s too much about the result.”

  • Burnley, Leeds United promoted to Premier League

Burnley, Leeds United promoted to Premier League

Burnley beat Sheffield United 2-1 to seal automatic promotion to the Premier League on Saturday with the result also sending Championship leaders Leeds United up alongside them.

Leeds had earlier thrashed Stoke City 6-0 to go top of the Championship on 94 points with two matches remaining and needed Burnley to then not lose to third-placed Sheffield United to make sure they would finish in the top two.

Burnley duly obliged with Josh Brownhill scoring twice at Turf Moor either side of Tom Cannon’s equaliser.

Scott Parker’s side, who were relegated last season, joined Leeds on 94 points to leave Sheffield United on 86 and now facing the prospect of trying to join them via the playoffs.

Joel Piroe scored a hat-trick in the opening 20 minutes for Leeds at a raucous Elland Road and added another before halftime as the hosts stormed 5-0 ahead by the interval.

Leeds are heading back to the top flight after being relegated in 2023 after three seasons in the Premier League.

Fourth-placed Sunderland are guaranteed a playoff place despite a 1-0 home defeat by Blackburn Rovers who kept alive their slim hopes of a top-six finish.

Fifth-placed Bristol City went down 3-1 at relegation battlers Luton Town, but remained above Coventry City who also lost 3-1 to bottom club Plymouth Argyle.

Seventh-placed Middlesbrough will be kicking themselves as they failed to capitalise on the defeats for Bristol and Coventry as they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday despite taking an early lead.

With two games remaining Bristol City have 67 points, Coventry have 66 and Middlesbrough have 63.

Millwall and Blackburn, with 63 and 62 points respectively, are also still involved in the playoff picture.

  • Leicester City relegated from Premier League

Leicester City relegated from Premier League

Leicester City have officially been relegated from the Premier League following their 1-0 defeat to champions-elect Liverpool on Sunday.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side have finally been put out of their misery, falling back down to the Championship just one season after earning promotion as champions.

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold dealt the blow that sent them down, scoring in the 76th minute to put his side just one win away from Premier League glory.

Leicester still have five games to make their points tally a little more respectable having picked up just 18 from their 33 so far.

Ipswich Town are also expected to go down barring what would be the greatest escape in Premier League history, marking the second consecutive season all three promoted sides have gone straight back down.

  • Top three players to watch this weekend in EPL

Top three players to watch this weekend in EPL

The Premier League is back for another weekend of action as the title race draws to a close and relegation sides fight to stay up, here are three players to keep an eye on.

    Virgil van Dijk

Van Dijk has joined forward Mohamed Salah, who signed a two-year extension last week, in committing his future to the club. The 33-year-old has made 314 appearances for the Reds and will make one more this weekend against relegation candidates Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

A loss for the Foxes would see them relegated after just 2 wins since the start of the year and collecting just 18 points from 32 games this season. The Dutchman will be at the heart of the Liverpool defense, defending not only a clean sheet but the club’s chances of sealing the title early as long as Arsenal slip up against Ipswich Town. A win is imperative and Van Dijk alongside Salah should be two stars to watch closely this weekend.

    Alexander Isak

The 25-year-old has scored 59 goals in 103 games for the Magpies this season and in the final stretch of the campaign, he is a no-brainer when selecting three players to highlight this weekend. Isak is objectively one of the best strikers in the world at the moment as he continues to attract attention from Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and several other top sides ahead of the summer transfer window.

However, Newcastle remain determined to keep hold of their star striker and as they push towards Champions League qualification, he may want to stay and work under manager Eddie Howe. Saturday afternoon sees Howe’s side face Aston Villa, another side chasing European qualification but after six wins in a row Newcastle are favourites by some distance. Isak is in the form of his life and he should help find the back of the net again this week.

    Mikel Merino

After Arsenal had lost Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz to injuries many wrote the manager Mikel Arteta’s side off and claimed both their European run and title race were over. He admitted earlier this season that he had never played as a striker before but the former Real Sociedad ace looks right at home and has been exceptional since operating as a makeshift striker for the North London side.

The Spaniard has registered six goals and three assists for the London giants in all competitions including two assists against Real Madrid in midweek. The Gunners face Ipswich on Sunday in another crucial game in their title race which still isn’t over. Arsenal will be hoping he can continue his sparkling form and contribute more to Arteta’s side who look deadlier than ever despite the lack of a true striker.

  • Arsenal’s make-shift striker proves matchwinner against Chelsea

Arsenal’s make-shift striker proves matchwinner against Chelsea

Arsenal ended a three-match winless Premier League (PL) run with a narrow 1-0 victory over London rivals Chelsea, extending the Blues’ worrying away league run to seven matches without a win (D2, L5).

Early sighters from Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli set the tone for a first half in which Chelsea largely struggled to impose themselves.

The Blues were on the back foot for much of the period, with Arsenal having plenty of joy down the right flank as Jurriën Timber’s cutback from the byline caused a moment of panic for the visitors.

Unsurprisingly, the breakthrough eventually came from the right, where a corner was conceded, allowing Martin Ødegaard to whip in a ball that was looped over a nervy Robert Sánchez via the head of makeshift striker Mikel Merino.

At the other end, Chelsea’s stand-in centre forward Pedro Neto was often finding himself isolated, but his side improved as the half wore on, coming close to an equaliser when Marc Cucurella’s volley slipped through David Raya’s hands, trickling agonisngly past the far post.

Nevertheless, Arsenal kept the Blues at bay until the break, adding a 10th HT lead at the Emirates to their tally – a league high.

Attempting to cope in the absence of an injured Cole Palmer, Chelsea made a quiet start to the second half, failing to continue their previously growing momentum following the interval.

With an hour played, Sánchez was called into action to prevent Merino from doubling Arsenal’s advantage, making a fine save to stop a well-taken volley from crossing the line. A rather tame effort from Ødegaard soon followed before a low-key period lacking in notable action.

Still searching for a response, Enzo Maresca’s men pushed for a late equaliser, but ultimately to no avail as the well-organised hosts held firm.

Closing a 12-point gap to league leaders Liverpool looks to be beyond Mikel Arteta’s side at this late stage of the campaign, but victory here does give Arsenal breathing room in their bid to secure UEFA Champions League (UCL) qualification, now 10 points clear of fifth-placed Manchester City.

One point and one place above last season’s champions, Chelsea remain in the last certain UCL spot, although a seventh PL H2H (D2, L5) without victory will have done little to boost their confidence ahead of the run-in.

  • Man City held by Brighton in EPL clash

Man City held by Brighton in EPL clash

Manchester City stumbled again in the battle to secure a return to the Champions League as they were pegged back twice by fellow top-five challengers Brighton in an entertaining encounter at Etihad Stadium.

Erling Haaland became the first player to reach 100 Premier League goal involvements in fewer than 100 games when he marked his 94th appearance in the competition with his 84th goal by sending Brighton keeper Bart Verbruggen the wrong way with his 11th-minute penalty.

In a game of superb goals, Pervis Estupinan levelled with a curling free-kick that bounced in off a post, although City keeper Stefan Ortega, in for injured first-choice Ederson, did not cover himself in glory as he initially moved to his right before changing direction and eventually watching the ball go in with a shocked look on his first.

Omar Marmoush levelled with a superb 20-yard strike into the bottom corner, only for City’s brittle defence to let them down again three minutes after the restart as Abdukodir Khusanov diverted Jack Hinshelwood’s effort into his own net.

In a frenzied finish, City manager Pep Guardiola grew increasingly irritated at referee Simon Hooper following challenges on Josko Gvardiol and Bernardo Silva, who had to be replaced 18 minutes after coming on as a substitute.

Nico Gonzalez hit a post as the hosts pressed but it was Brighton, who have never won an away game against City, who should have claimed victory, only for Carlos Baleba to balloon a shot over the bar when he had arrived with a perfectly timed run to meet Joao Pedro’s cross unmarked in a central position 12 yards out.

  • Mitoma breaks Premier League Japanese record

Mitoma breaks Premier League Japanese record

Brighton attacker Kaoru Mitoma has become the most successful Japanese player in Premier League history.

With his strike in victory at Manchester United on Sunday, it marked Mitoma’s 15th goal in the Premier League.

As such, Mitoma is now the highest Japanese goalscorer in the English top-flight, surpassing the 14 goals struck by Leicester City’s Premier League title winner Shinji Okazaki.

Mitoma has also recorded 12 assists in the EPL, double the number of any Japanese player.

The 27 year-old’s current Brighton deal runs to 2027.

  • Premier League referee fired for insulting Liverpool

Premier League referee fired for insulting Liverpool

The Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) has sacked Premier League referee, David Coote after a video of Coote emerged last month appearing to show him insult Liverpool and their former manager, Jurgen Klopp.

The footage, which was posted to social media in November, appears to have been filmed in the wake of Liverpool’s’ 7-2 thrashing at Aston Villa in October 2020.

Another video was also released in which Coote appeared to snort white powder in footage allegedly filmed during Euro 2024, where he officiated.

An eight-second film allegedly showing him with a rolled-up banknote was said to have been taken 24 hours after he provided VAR assistance for France’s quarter-final win over Portugal, played in Hamburg on July 5.

The first video, reportedly shared via WhatsApp by Coote, shows white powder on a bedside table alongside prescription drugs, a credit card and the Terry Hayes novel The Year of the Locust.

The footage was believed to have been taken in a Uefa-funded hotel room. A separate photo sent from Frankfurt on July 1 allegedly shows Coote’s credit cards on a saucer either side of six lines of powder.

The English Football Association (FA) also in November launched an investigation into allegations that Mr Coote discussed giving a yellow card ahead of a match. Mr Coote insisted nothing improper took place.

However, PGMOL in a statement on Monday disclosed thorough investigations into David Coote’s conduct have been concluded and that his actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment

The statement reads: “Following the conclusion of a thorough investigation into David Coote’s conduct, his employment with PGMOL has been terminated today with immediate effect.

“David Coote’s actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract, with his position deemed untenable.

“Supporting David Coote continues to be important to us and we remain committed to his welfare. David Coote has a right to appeal the decision to terminate his employment”.

  • EPL: Jadon Sancho warns Chelsea teammates

EPL: Jadon Sancho warns Chelsea teammates

Jadon Sancho is delighted to be off the mark for Chelsea.

Sancho came off the bench to score in the midweek 5-1 win against Southampton.

“I’m delighted,” said Sancho. “I finally shot! So I’m just over the moon that I got my goal.

“I’m grateful whether I start or come on the pitch from the bench.

“As long as I get some minutes and can play in front of the fans I’m delighted, but today topped it off with my goal. Obviously, the most important thing is the three points.

“We love the travelling fans, we love the fans home and away. We appreciate them and we try to give them a performance like this so they can go home happy. So we’re just delighted with the three points.”

Sancho also told the club’s website: “It was a good performance.

“I feel like we started a bit slow but then when we got the first goal we started to get into our rhythm and luckily we came away with five goals.

“We can’t get carried away. It’s nice to be in this position, but we’re going to take it game by game because we still have a long season ahead of us.”

  • EPL: Top 5 talking points this weekend

EPL: Top 5 talking points this weekend

The Premier League returns this week after a week long international break, here are 5 talking points as club football returns once again.

RUBEN AMORIM’S FIRST GAME IN CHARGE

The Amorim era begins at Manchester United as the Portuguese manager prepares for his first game at the helm after the brutal sacking of Erik ten Hag. Amorim is the sixth person to fill the hole left by Sir Alex Ferguson 11 years ago as he aims to bring a breath of fresh air to a stagnating club.

Many are optimistic as United travel to Portman Road to face Ipswich Town especially after Amorim whipped their biggest rivals 4-1 in his last game in charge of Sporting Lisbon. Will he bring success? Only time will tell.

THREE MANAGERS WITH JOBS IN DOUBT

Gary O’Neil of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Oliver Glasner of Crystal Palace and Russell Martin of Southampton are all under threat this week as they attempt to escape the relegation zone.

The trio of failing sides have been underwhelming this season to say the least and now with Ten Hag gone all three head coaches will be desperate for a win this week to save their jobs or at least further scrutiny from impatient fans who have had enough.

Dr TOTTENHAM COULD HEAL MAN CITY

City lost 4 games in a row for the first time since 2006 before the international break and now manager Pep Guardiola will be looking to turn his club around as they attempt to chase a title that is slowly slipping away to Liverpool.

Dr Tottenham is the idea that teams lacking in confidence, form and points will suddenly be healed with a positive result against Spurs and with Guardiola desperate for a win the North London side may be exactly what he needs to bounce back.

CHRIS WOOD COULD END ARSENAL TITLE CHANCES

The New Zealand striker scored 5 goals in two games over the international break against Samoa and Vanuatu to add to what has been his best ever start to a season. Wood sits just 4 goals behind Erling Haaland in the Premier League scoring charts and has an unbelievable 8 goals in 11 games for a Nottingham Forest side who are in top shape.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side travel to the Emirates Stadium this weekend as Arsenal look to break their poor form which has seen them winless in the league since the start of October. Manager Mikel Arteta will be hoping to lockdown Wood on Saturday with the 32-year-old being the most likely to kill the Gunners title hopes.

    LEADERS LIVERPOOL FACE BOTTOM SOUTHAMPTON

Arne Slot’s side went into the international break holding a five-point lead over Man City and will travel to St. Mary’s this weekend in hopes of maintaining that gap before facing the champions the week afterwards.

Despite the league standings, Russell Martin’s side grabbed their first win of the season before the break and will be full of confidence in front of the home crowd. Add this on to the fact that the Reds injury woes could be worsened with the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk possibly absent it could be a recipe for a shock Saints result.
