Saka signs new long-term Arsenal contract

Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka has signed a new long-term contract.

The 21-year-old England international has scored 14 goals in all competitions this season as well as providing 11 assists.

Saka told the club website: “I’m just really happy. There’s been a lot of talking and it’s been a while, but I’m here now.

“I think this is the right club, the right place to make the next step. It’s a beautiful club —– look where we are.

“I think I have everything I need to become the best player I can be, and that’s why I’m happy to stay here and be here for the future, because I really believe that we can achieve big things.”

Saka made his Gunners debut in November 2018 and has made 178 appearances in red and white.

He added: “I have seen a lot of change. I’ve seen this team and the club grow, and one thing that everyone around us can be excited about is that we are going in the right direction.

“It’s been too long since this club has had UEFA Champions League football.

“I’m really looking forward to Tuesday and Wednesday nights in this stadium, the atmosphere is going to be special.”

Saka joins goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale in signing a new deal in the last few days.

Club manager Mikel Arteta said: “It’s great for the club that Bukayo has extended his contract.

“Retaining our best young talents is key to our continued progress and Bukayo represents such an important part of our squad now and for the future.

“As well as being a fantastic talent, Bukayo is a special person, he’s loved by us all and he is a credit to himself and his family for the hard work and commitment they have all made to get to this level today.”

  • How EPL defences can stop Haaland – O’Shea

How EPL defences can stop Haaland – O’Shea

Former Manchester United defender John O’Shea insists there are ways to stop Manchester City striker Erling Haaland.

The Irishman insists Premier League defences haven’t done enough this season against the Norwegian.

He told the Sunday World: “Haaland is unusual in as much as he is a tall, powerful striker and he also has real pace. It’s a combination that is tough to stop.

“You often have a big strong striker or a small quick one, but in every attribute, he is matching you or getting one over on you.

“Normally when you can cope with someone physically, you might be a bit quicker than him, but not with Haaland.

“All I would say about Haaland is a lot of teams have not really tried to come up with a plan to stop him.

“I’m not saying it will work, but I looked at the Real Madrid approach in the first leg of their match against City and they managed to keep him relatively quiet.

“They dropped off, cut down the space he needs to run in behind them and were as aggressive as they possibly and legally could be against him.

“That’s the only way to stop him. He is so strong and quick that you have to cut off what he wants and that’s space in behind a defence.

“It gives you the best chance of dealing with him and while he will come out on top at times because he is so good, you have to try and be inventive against a player like that.”

EPL: Arsenal tipped to win the premier League next season

After making frantic efforts to lift the Premier League for the first time in 20 years but lost it few games to the end of the season, Arsenal Football Club has been tipped to also be relevant come next season.

Former Arsenal star, Nigel Winterburn has predicted the club to go all the way and win the Premier League next season.

Manchester City won the title on Saturday night as the declaration came immediately Arsenal lost away to Forest 1-0.

Not many Premier League followers gave Mikel Arteta’s side the chance to become challengers in the title race at the start of the season.

“They’ve proved that they can do it this season, so why shouldn’t they be able to go again and do it next season?” Winterburn told The Daily Star.

“I don’t see any reason Arsenal would not be in the title race. Arsenal have the quality to beat them which they’ve proved.

“It’s only Manchester City out of the top teams who have looked stronger than Arsenal, so absolutely they should be looking into being in a similar position next season.”

De Gea’s closest rival Liverpool’s Allison conceded a goal in the 1-1 draw against Aston Villa at Anfield to set up the Spaniard up as the clear favourite.

Newcastle’s Nick Pope and Arsenal star Aaron Ramsdale, both have 13 clean sheets and have two matches left.

It is just the second time De Gea has won the Golden Glove, which he last claimed in 2017/2018.

EPL: Manchester City thrash Everton 3-0, inch closer to Premier League title

Manchester City’s dream of winning a treble this season came alive after the Citizens defeated Everton by 3-0 away at Goodison Park.

The Goodison Park crowd was in fine voice from the start, looking to build on the momentum from last weekend’s stunning 5-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion. The hosts started well and were able to frustrate City until two quick-fire goals took the game away from them.

Ilkay Gundogan o[ened scoring for the visitors with a delightful piece of skill in the Everton box inside 37th minute two minutes after Erling Haaland  jumped very high in the box to head home the second goal for City,

Upon resumption of the second half, Gundogan again curled home a perfect free kick from the edge of the Everton box to secure the victory for his team.

It was a  perfect afternoon for Pep Guardiola’s side, who managed to rest the likes of Jack Grealish, Kevin de Bruyne and Bernardo Silva ahead of Wednesday crucial Champions League clash with Real Madrid at the Etihad.

The result meant Everton are still rooted in the relegation dug fight with just  slightly placed on 16th position of the English Premier League.

Already relegated Southampton are lying on the 20th position, while Leicester City, Leeds occupy the 19th and 18th position respectively.

  • Granit Xhaka closer to Arsenal exit

Granit Xhaka closer to Arsenal exit

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka is ready to leave the Premier League club.

That’s according to BILD’s football chief Christian Falk.

He told The Sun: “Xhaka’s contract runs out in 2024. Leverkusen have already had concrete talks with the Arsenal player last summer but, at that time, the club asked for £26m, which was too much for Leverkusen.

“Now, they’ve heard about a price tag is £13m and this would be doable for Leverkusen.”

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta talked up the prospect of Xhaka staying next season.

  • We deserved more than Newcastle draw – Allardyce

We deserved more than Newcastle draw – Allardyce

Leeds boss Sam Allardyce felt they deserved more from their 2-2 draw with Newcastle.

Patrick Bamford missed a penalty, while Junior Firpo was sent off for Leeds in an amazing game which also saw a home fan invade the pitch and shove Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.

Allardyce said: “The score line should have been a victory for us today. I believe with the spirit we showed, the commitment we showed if we’re going 2-0 up I think would have, the way we defended the game apart from silly penalties, of course, we would have won the game. The fact that we allowed ourselves to get knocked back a couple of times by missing the penalty and then conceding the penalty within two minutes and the way we stayed in the game was very really good.

“Of course, going 2-1 down again to another penalty and then coming back from that scoring, and then again the player sent off. So we shot ourselves in the foot quite often but also, we showed us enough today to say we if we cut out those mistakes we can get three points perhaps. We are playing the third in the league and nearly or should have won in my opinion, of course. But that’s down to our fault today, giving two penalties away and missing one, and even when we got a player sent off we defended exceptionally well to make sure we did get a point, because we could have easily lost again.”

On Bamford’s penalty, Allardyce also said: “Well, I left it how it used to be like before I got here. I mean, I haven’t seen them take many penalties. It is what it is, they have been what they’re doing then we cannot say ‘why didn’t somebody else take it?’.

“I would have thought if Rodrigo really wanted it he have gone and snatched it off Patrick and said ‘I’m taking this’. We see that quite a bit and then of course that puts you under even more pressure to score. So you miss it, it can happen to anybody. It happened to us today, but at the worst possible time. And that’s very unfortunate for us.”

  • Man Utd beat Wolves to strengthen top-four spot

Man Utd beat Wolves to strengthen top-four spot

Manchester United bounced back from consecutive Premier League defeats by beating Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford to strengthen their bid for a top-four finish.

Erik ten Hag’s side had lost to Brighton and West Ham to give Liverpool – who were one point behind in fourth at the start of the day – hope of snatching a Champions League spot at their expense.

But Anthony Martial opened the scoring in the first half before Alejandro Garnacho added a second in stoppage time to secure a win that moved Manchester United four points clear of the Reds with three games remaining.

With Marcus Rashford out through injury, it looked like being a difficult day in front of goal for the hosts as they missed a number of decent chances, particularly through Antony.

The winger curled an effort just wide after racing into space before sending a header over from close range when unmarked.

But Antony provided the assist for the first-half breakthrough when he was played in by Bruno Fernandes and he unselfishly squared to Martial for the tap-in.

Antony had another opportunity to get on the scoresheet in the second half but he drove a shot just wide of the post after being set up by a Fernandes backheel.

However, substitute Garnacho finally got Manchester United’s second when he raced through in the fifth minute of stoppage time before firing past Dan Bentley in the Wolves goal.

The visitors rarely threatened as they finished the game without a shot on target.

Manchester United remain fourth but are level on 66 points with Newcastle in third. Wolves, meanwhile, are 13th.

  • Southampton relegated from Premier League

    Southampton relegated from Premier League

Southampton’s 11-year stay in the Premier League ended in tame fashion as their relegation was confirmed with defeat at home by Fulham.

Aleksandar Mitrovic, making his return from an eight-game ban for pushing referee Chris Kavanagh, sealed Saints’ fate with a stooping header after Carlos Vinicius’ opener.

The hosts could have few complaints about the outcome after producing a muted performance despite knowing they had to win to have any chance of pulling off an unlikely survival mission.

They did have a Carlos Alcaraz strike disallowed for a marginal offside just before Vinicius broke the deadlock but the confident Cottagers were comfortably the better side.

Willian’s first-half volley was cleared off the line by fellow Brazilian Lyanco, who had earlier been fortunate to escape a video assistant referee’s penalty check for handball.

But Vinicius tucked home after Lyanco’s clearance ricocheted to him kindly off Harrison Reed and Mitrovic nodded in his 12th league goal of the season from Harry Wilson’s cross.

Southampton, lethargic throughout, had no response after falling behind and will be playing Championship football next season for the first time since 2012.b

However, Klopp insists overall he’s happy with it’s makeup.

He explained, “Yes, we will change slightly, but the basis is absolutely great.
