EPL: Ten Hag makes sale decision for Harry Maguire

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is prepared to sell Harry Maguire at the end of the season.

The Guardian says United will consider offers for their skipper to help fund a continuing overhaul of Ten Hag’s squad, but may have to accept a big loss on the £80million fee they paid for Maguire in August 2019.

The centre-back has only started one game for Ten Hag since being in the line-up for the 2-1 loss to Brighton on the opening weekend of the season, and United’s humiliating 4-0 defeat to Brentford in August.

The Dutchman is said to admire the professionalism of Maguire, but isn’t impressed by his lack of pace and is looking for more competition in that position at the club.

He has fallen behind new signing Lisandro Martinez as well as Raphael Varane, while Victor Lindelof was preferred to Maguire in United’s 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa last weekend. Effectively making the England man the club’s fourth choice pick at centre-back.

  • Thomas Tuchel warns Potter about Chelsea job

Thomas Tuchel warns Potter about Chelsea job

Former Chelsea manager, Thomas Tuchel has warned his successor Graham Potter over his position at Stamford Bridge.

Potter has come in for increased scrutiny and criticism already, just months into the job, with defeat to Arsenal in the league followed up by a Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Manchester City.

For Tuchel, angst at Chelsea cannot extend beyond a ‘short period’ or Potter will find little buy-in to his methods.

“My experience in Chelsea, Paris, Dortmund, and Mainz, it is about the results,” Tuchel told the Ayurvedic Healing & Beyond Podcast.

“You can overcome one loss, a short period… but it cannot be too long otherwise nobody trusts the process no more.”

The German, currently out of work since being sacked earlier this season by new co-owner Todd Boehly, spoke openly about his approach to managing the egos in Chelsea’s dressing room and why he needed to set the standard each day.

“To worship the process on a daily process this is the most important,” he added.

“I try to be really strict and disciplined with the players, be on time, be friendly, be respectful, be ready, give your very best.”

Nobody had heart attack on Chelsea sale – Klopp

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has denied the club is up for sale.

Klopp was speaking after winning their Carabao Cup tie against Derby County on penalties.

The German was asked about reports of owners FSG wanting to sell.

He stated, “Chelsea got sold. We are looking for investors. It is completely different.

“As far as I know [FSG] are looking for investors and that makes sense. Whatever happens I am committed to the club.

“Nobody had a heart attack when they heard the news.”

  • Ronaldo and Man Utd reach transfer agreement

Ronaldo and Man Utd reach transfer agreement

Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to leave Manchester United in January when the transfer window opens.

Ronaldo has a difficult relationship with United coach Erik ten Hag at present.

He is not first choice when every player is fit, while he does not fit into ten Hag’s ideal play style.

Despite recently getting back into the team, according to Florian Plettenberg, Ronaldo and United are ready to part ways in January.

The club want to facilitate an exit for the Portuguese legend, with the Sky Sport Germany journalist claiming that Bayern attacker Erik Choupo-Moting could be his replacement.

United will be hoping to receive offers for Ronaldo on the back of the World Cup.

There is even the possibility of the forward returning to Sporting CP.

Chelsea players believe in Potter methods – Azpilicueta

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta says the players are behind manager Graham Potter after defeat to Arsenal.

Potter is still fine-tuning his system after joining Chelsea as head coach in September, with this result meaning he has suffered consecutive defeats in the league, having not lost in any competition prior to last week’s loss at Brighton.

However, Azpilicueta refuses to accept that, believing the team need to come together as a collective to improve performances and results as quickly as possible.

“They have been working together for longer, that’s true, but at Chelsea the demand is always high,” explained the Blues skipper. “We have to go in every single game for everything.

“It is true that we were not going into the game in the best moment in terms of performances, in terms of position in the table. They were in a better moment, but once you step out onto the pitch it’s a London derby, everything has to stay there.

“I think we need to look at ourselves because we are not in the position where we want to be, in terms of everything I think – goals scored, goals conceded, the way we play, the performances. This is a collective issue that we have to address.”

EPL: Southampton sack manager Ralph Hasenhuttl

Premier League side Southampton have announced the sacking of manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Hasenhuttl is axed after Sunday’s 4-1 home defeat to Newcastle United.

Saints announced this morning: “Southampton Football Club can confirm it has parted company with Men’s First Team Manager Ralph Hasenhüttl.

“First Team Assistant Coach Richard Kitzbichler has also today left the club.

“Hasenhüttl, who was appointed in December 2018, departs having made a significant contribution to the club, overseeing some memorable results and also playing a key role in the development of our club infrastructure, identity, Ralph Hasenhuttl and playing squad.

“However, we now believe it is an appropriate time to make a change.

“Everyone involved with the club would like to express their sincere thanks to Ralph for all of his efforts, as well as the unwavering commitment he has shown throughout his time as manager.

“First Team Lead Coach Rubén Sellés will take charge of the side on an interim basis for our game on Wednesday night. The club will be announcing a permanent replacement in due course.”

  • 5 lessons from weekend Premier League fixtures

5 lessons from weekend Premier League fixtures

Graham Potter’s system was exposed by Arsenal. Manchester United were blown away by Unai Emery’s counter-pressing style. And Willy Gnonto inspired Leeds United’s fight-back. Here’s five lessons we learned from the Premier League weekend…

    1) Gabriel-Saliba pairing reveals Chelsea weaknesses

Gabriel Magalhaes’ winner capped a brilliant individual performance from him alongside William Saliba in what was the clearest example yet that Arsenal have the defensive partnership required of champions. The calmness of their actions, their physical dominance, and the telepathy of their connection are giving the Gunners the confident platform they need to keep on winning.

Assisted by Thomas Partey, who was immaculate in picking up second balls and redistributing possession, Arsenal were able to completely dominate the game at Stamford Bridge. It is too early to criticise Graham Potter (he needs a lot of time and patience for his ideas to take hold, especially with such a lopsided squad) but Chelsea were very poor, deciding to play in a defensively conservative system but without the necessary counter-attacking elements.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had just eight touches of the ball and Kai Havertz was nowhere to be seen. It was clearly a mistake to use a 4-2-3-1 formation without Matteo Kovacic in midfield as Jorginho and Ruben Loftus-Cheek were predictably overrun by the swarm of bodies in this area, while the plan to use Raheem Sterling, Havertz, and Aubameyang as a three-pronged attack never got going.

    2) Spurs’ 5-3-2 leaves Robertson free to give Liverpool advantage

As usual, Tottenham Hotspur started slowly before trying to win the game only in the last half an hour of the match, and Antonio Conte is surely to blame for the negativity that his players are displaying before those desperate final throes.

They were outplayed in all areas on Sunday prior to Dejan Kulusevski’s introduction from the bench, and although injuries partly excuse them – Kulusevski, Lucas Moura, and Richarlison being unfit meant there was no pace up front for the counters – the formation was all wrong, too.

Conte’s 5-3-2 was never going to be the right way to play against a Liverpool front four. The Tottenham wing-backs were pinned right back, which left a three-man midfield needing to cover the entire width of the pitch, and their failure to do so allowed Liverpool to easily discover the out-ball to Andrew Robertson again and again. This led directly to the opening goal and to numerous other first-half chances.

    3) Elliott positioning only just covers Liverpool defensive problems

Liverpool’s new formation surely can’t last long term. It is effectively a corrupted 4-3-3 in which Roberto Firmino is flanked by Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez (who flit between being wide and central) and Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara hold together in midfield as Harvey Elliott floats freely in the right half-space. Most people are calling it a diamond 4-4-2, and indeed Jurgen Klopp’s system doesn’t quite fit into any of our traditional labels.

That is one reason why opponents are struggling to work out how to defend it. On Sunday, the way Elliott could interact with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Salah on that right flank drew the play over to their side of the pitch, in turn creating the space on the other side for the switch pass to Robertson. It was effective, for a while, but ultimately as Spurs built back into the game the immobility of the Fabinho-Thiago axis was again exposed. Liverpool nearly dropped two points as Klopp began to panic, dropping his team deeper and deeper before switching to a back five for the final few minutes, inviting pressure.

There is no way this weird 4-2-4/lopsided 4-3-3/diamond 4-4-2 can last. But it might just paper over the cracks until Klopp can finally replace Georginio Wijnaldum. Liverpool need to pay whatever it takes to land Jude Bellingham.

    4) Bailey and Ramsey hint at Emery-ball future

Unai Emery has always had a very particular tactical philosophy but it came as a big surprise to see Aston Villa enact certain aspects of it after just three training sessions with their new manager. Emery coaches meticulously designed counter-attacks from a low block, with dangerous short-passing encouraged to draw the opposition press before suddenly switching gears to gallop behind the onrushing players.

Villa’s first and third goals were the result of this kind of move. Emiliano Buendia was the skilful passer under pressure to release the pace of the forwards, with Leon Bailey and Jacob Ramsey predictably coming to the fore; both are excellent dribblers and both are keen on a lung-busting late run into the penalty area, as we saw for their respective goals.

Emery had deployed a very narrow 4-3-3, with both Bailey and Buendia expected to come infield in order to be close to Ollie Watkins and Ramsey for those high-energy, fast-interchanging breakaways. We will see a lot more of these over the coming months.

    5) Gnonto and formation change inspire Leeds comeback

Leeds United’s 19-year-old forward Wilfried Gnonto changed the game after coming off the bench at half-time. Bournemouth had been in total control of the match until that point, when his energy and intelligence in the final third inspired a comeback that was also partly the result of Jesse Marsch’s switch from 4-2-3-1 to 4-3-3.

Marsch is a very active manager, hence the various comebacks we have already seen since he took charge at Elland Road, and this was another perfect example of his ability to tactically read a game. An extra body in deeper central midfield wrested control from the Bournemouth players and forced them back, creating extra space for the likes of Gnonto in the final third. It was his excellent run and through ball that assisted the winner.

EPL: Arsenal defeat Chelsea in London derby

Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League table as Gabriel’s close-range finish gave them victory away to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Gabriel pounced to steer the ball over the line in the 63rd minute, after the hosts failed to deal with Bukayo Sako’s corner from the right wing, to give the Gunners a deserved lead.

Chelsea, with ex-Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang failing to make an impact against his former side, struggled to create clear-cut chances and are now without a win in four Premier League matches.

Arsenal lost top spot on Saturday when 10-man Manchester City beat Fulham 2-1 thanks to Erling Haaland’s winning penalty in the fifth minute of injury time, but this win takes them two points clear of Pep Guardiola’s side after 13 matches.

  • Arsenal captain Odegaard speaks ahead of Chelsea clash

Arsenal captain Odegaard speaks ahead of Chelsea clash

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard says their clash at Chelsea is a test of their title credentials.

The Gunners go to Stamford Bridge having lost the Premier League leadership to Manchester City courtesy of their late win against Fulham.

Odegaard said: “These things are important for the confidence and for the feeling that we can beat these top teams away from home as well.

“The Manchester United game was frustrating for us. We controlled the game and played good football but we suddenly just gave away some easy goals and we lost the game.

“This is a game where we have to show a different side compared to the United game. We have to be ready to win these games, that’s important for us now.”

Arsenal have won their last two matches at Stamford Bridge but Odegaard was keen to play down that having any significance on Sunday’s fixture. He added: “I don’t think it’s too important but it gives you a good feeling, you have good memories.

“It brings maybe that little extra confidence into the game. It’s not too important but it’s good to have that feeling and we have to try to do that again. This will be a tough game. It’s a different Chelsea team with a new manager.

“But we played Brighton a lot with this manager and it’s always tough to play his teams. They have been almost playing man-to-man all over [under Potter].

“They made it really difficult for us and I’m sure it will be some of the same things, but I guess Chelsea has to do thing a bit differently. He’s a very technically strong manager and it’s going to be a big battle.”

Chelsea v Arsenal: What I think about facing former teammates – Aubameyang

Chelsea striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang says he’ll be very excited to face his former teammates at Arsenal.

Aubameyang left the Emirates back in January after being frozen out of the first-team. The club’s hierarchy elected to terminate his contract after Mikel Arteta reprimanded the player for a disciplinary issue. That allowed Aubameyang to move to Barcelona before returning in the summer to link up with Chelsea.

He told BT Sport: “Yes, definitely a very exciting game and also because they are doing well at the moment. Yeah, before I was on the other side and of course I have some memories of a few games I played against Chelsea now it’s going to be so much different.

“But hopefully we can win this game and we play at home so I think it’s going to be really exciting and yeah, I’m looking forward to it. It’s a big week coming and we will try to give everything to make the most of it. The first game is at home against Arsenal I think it’s going to be fun for sure.”
