JUST IN: Man City lose major premier league vote

The Premier League have approved changes to Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules after a crunch summit.

On Friday morning, top-flight sides gathered in London before voting in a ballot over the Premier League rules.

The competition had been forced to act after an independent panel found sections of the existing rules on associated party transactions (APTs) – deals between clubs and parties linked to their owners – to be unlawful after a legal challenge from City.

However, the champions called on clubs to vote against the amendments, accused the Premier League of rushing its consultation and raised the prospect of further legal action should they be enforced.

Yet the Premier League champions were dealt a blow after the English top-flight voted to approve the changes to ATP rules.

  • Liverpool open five-point gap in Premier League

Liverpool open five-point gap in Premier League

Liverpool opened a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League as breakaway goals by Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah sealed a 2-0 win at home to Aston Villa on Saturday.

Manchester City’s earlier defeat was the perfect pre-match tonic for Liverpool and Nunez’s 20th minute strike following a lightning counter-attack set the tone at Anfield.

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher made some vital saves to preserve his side’s lead but Salah raced clear in the 84th minute to wrap up the points and maintain their sensational start to the season under new manager Arne Slot.

They have won 15 out of 17 games in all competitions since the Dutchman replaced Juergen Klopp in the close season.

Liverpool will head into the international break with 28 points from 11 games with reigning champions City on 23.

Villa’s third league defeat of the season leaves them down in eighth place with 18 points.

Slot saluted the ecstatic Anfield crowd at the fulltime whistle and they roared their approval as the post-Klopp era continues to defy even the most optimistic forecasts.

After a relatively comfortable run of fixtures at the start of the season, Liverpool have now drawn away at Arsenal, beaten a dangerous Brighton and Hove Albion and thrashed Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.

“We have players who are so fast on the counter-attack so it was good to see we scored two from them,” Slot said.

“We are really happy that after such a difficult period most of our players stayed fit. We’ve had some tough tests for sure, but after the break again they are tough.

“Margins are small, we have a bit of a margin but there are many challenges to come.”

Liverpool were made to work hard by a patient Villa side but combined a measured approach in defence with lethal counter-attacking that could have delivered more than the two goals.

Nunez’s opening goal stemmed from a Villa corner. As the ball was cleared, Virgil van Dijk’s pass sent Salah steaming into the Villa half and although he was bundled over by Leon Bailey the ball ran to Nunez who rounded Emiliano Martinez and slammed home a right-footed shot from a narrow angle.

Uruguayan Nunez should have made it 2-0 from an almost carbon copy situation shortly afterwards.

Again Liverpool burst out of defence in scintillating fashion and Nunez raced clear but with the goal at his mercy he lifted his shot over the crossbar.

Villa responded well and Kelleher, who has been so impressive in the absence of first-choice Alisson, tipped away a glancing header by Amadou Onana.

Kelleher then made a superb reflex save to keep out a close-range effort by Diego Carlos.

Villa looked more than capable of equalising after the break but Liverpool defended solidly and Salah floored them with his eighth league goal of the campaign.

EPL club will explore Janaury move for Osimhen

English Premier League club Chelsea may yet get a second chance at signing Victor Osimhen this winter.

The Blues were linked to the Nigerian forward throughout the summer window.

However, a move did not materialize, with Osimhen going to Galatasaray on loan instead.

According to Corrierre dello Sport, Osimhen remains eager to go to the Premier League.

Whether a deal can be done between Chelsea and Napoli is not yet clear.

However, there is a clear will from the player to get a move to Stamford Bridge.

  • Nottingham Forest draw at Stamford Bridge in feisty encounter

Nottingham Forest draw at Stamford Bridge in feisty encounter

Chris Wood and Noni Madueke scored as Chelsea and Nottingham Forest played out a tactical and feisty draw at Stamford Bridge.

Forest went ahead when 32-year-old striker Wood slid in a finish past Robert Sanchez after a good set-piece routine involving James Ward-Prowse and Nikola Milenkovic in the 49th minute.

But Chelsea responded quickly as Madueke equalised eight minutes later after cutting in on his left foot and shooting, his fourth such effort having had the beating of left-back Alex Moreno.

Midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White came off injured in the second half – putting his chances of contributing with England this month in major doubt as he gingerly walked off the pitch, looking in pain and frustrated.

Referee Chris Kavanagh sent off Forest’s Ward-Prowse for deliberately handling the ball to stop a Nicolas Jackson counter-attack in the second half, giving him a second yellow card, having booked him earlier on for a more conventional tactical foul on star man Cole Palmer.

Then, Madueke also appeared to go off injured after a melee sparked by Neco Williams, who pushed defender Marc Cucurella into Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea looked to their extensive bench to win the match, bringing on Christopher Nkunku, Joao Felix, Mykhailo Mudryk and Pedro Neto to win the game with a man advantage, but Palmer had two chances well saved by Matz Sels and Felix headed an effort wide in stoppage time.

There were two huge efforts saved in the closing minutes.

Williams curling effort for the visitors was saved by Sanchez, before – at the other end – Nkunku’s diving header was saved at close range by Sels.

It felt like a close match of two in-form clubs pitting their records against each other, with Chelsea dominant in the latter stages.

The Blues’ five-game winning run has ended but they remain unbeaten in the league since the opening match of the season, while Forest are undefeated on the road in six matches, their longest such run since 1995.

  • Chelsea spirit helped me settle quickly – Veiga

Chelsea spirit helped me settle quickly – Veiga

Renato Veiga says he’s been able to settle quickly at Chelsea thanks to the squad’s team spirit.

The defender arrived in the summer from FC Basel and is already impressing for manager Enzo Maresca.

“We have a really good group with great individuals and good values,’ Veiga said.

“We really like each other and are building a family, you could say. Everyone has integrated really well and the group is really together.

“There aren’t little groups within the squad like on other teams I’ve been on, but that happens and is normal. It’s special that here in Chelsea now, we have a big group, a big family, and everyone feels together.”

Veiga says the players have quickly responded to manager Maresca’s methods.

“That’s what the manager wants, that we can swap a player but the ideas and the timings are there,” he told the Chelsea website.

“It’s independent of the player that’s in each position. The manager wants us to be in the right place at the right time. So that’s what we try to do, to follow what he says.

“We just have to put our quality in and enjoy the game.”

  • Top 5 EPL talking points this weekend

Top 5 EPL talking points this weekend

The Premier League continues this weekend as the champions look to recover their form whilst many sides are still searching for their first victory, here are 5 talking points ahead of this week’s action.

Manchester City look to bounce back at the top of the table after double draws

Manager Pep Guardiola will be looking to bounce back this weekend after two consecutive draws against Newcastle United and Arsenal in recent weeks as they slipped to second in the table.

City face Fulham for the first time in 5 months with the last meeting ending 4-0 just before they clinched the title. The Cottagers have not beaten the Citizens in well over a decade but after a strong start to the season Marco Silva’s side are on a five-game unbeaten run.

Fulham could escape with an unexpected result especially as Guardiola’s side have conceded in each of their last five league games. Anything less than a win here would be a huge disappointment for City who have struggled to find their feet so far.

Wolverhampton Wanderers aim to climb from bottom of the league

Wolves lost 2-1 to Liverpool in their last league clash which led to midfielder Mario Lemina posting a message to fans on his social media having broke down in tears after the hard-fought game

“This group, this club, all the people around the club deserve much better than that. We are not gonna give up! 100 per cent. I know well my brothers. We are fully committed to change the future. Big challenge ahead of us.”

Gary O’Neil’s side sit bottom of the table with a –10 goal difference and a talented squad who just cannot seem to blend this season. Their position is truly unprecedented and as they prepare to welcome Brentford to the Vitality Stadium this week, they will have the idea of relegation on their minds which could well be a possibility.

Erik Ten Hag faces Aston Villa test that could decide his future at Manchester United

Ten Hag has been backed by United bosses this week after a worrying start to the season which has left many pundits scratching their heads, especially after the club’s mass spend over the summer window.

The club’s 3-0 home defeat to Tottenham felt like a breaking point for the Dutch manager who will be hoping to grab a result at Villa this weekend.

United sit 13th and despite their FA Cup win last season it is difficult to justify their position and performances which has given them just 5 goals in 6 games. Villa boss Unai Emery has the chance to make life difficult for Ten Hag and after their 7-game unbeaten run, which includes the likes of Bayern Munich, it’s very possible the Dutchman’s future is in his hands.

Crystal Palace search for first win of  season with Oliver Glasner close to sack

Selhurst Park welcomes Liverpool this weekend in another difficult game for a Palace side who are yet to win a game in their opening 6 fixtures. Everton produced a shock 2-1 comeback last time out against the Eagles, meaning they sit in the relegation zone separated by the points earnt via only draws so far.

Glasner’s side will take confidence from Palace’s last clash against Liverpool, however, as an Eberechi Eze goal separated the two sides in their 1-0 victory.

Much like Ten Hag, Glasner could face the sack if he does not earn at least another point against the Reds this Saturday.

Can Villa continue their unbeaten streak?

The opening five games of the season have pointed strongly to the fact that last season’s Champions League qualifying campaign was not a fluke and that in fact this Villa side under Unai Emery is aiming for even more.

Villa sit third and after beating Bayern Munich this week and ending their historic 41 game Champions League run, they seem unstoppable.

Emery’s side face Manchester United this weekend with all signs pointing towards yet another victory for the Villans, who have had an almost perfect start to the season.

  • Chelsea’s Madueke hits hat-trick in Wolves win

Chelsea’s Madueke hits hat-trick in Wolves win

Noni Madueke’s hat-trick gave Chelsea their first Premier League victory of the season as they beat Wolves in a pulsating and chaotic encounter.

Chelsea took the lead after 98 seconds when Cole Palmer’s inswinging corner was inadvertently flicked on by Matheus Cunha and an unmarked Nicholas Jackson nodded in at the back post.

Jackson stoked an already feisty Molineux crowd with his celebrations – and Wolves rallied on the field.

Rayan Ait-Nouri’s dazzling run set up Cunha and the livewire Brazilian equalised with a crisp low finish from inside the box, before appearing to goad Chelsea’s players.

Palmer then restored Chelsea’s lead with a deft cushioned lob from 30 yards when he spotted Jose Sa off his line.

Wolves got themselves back level for a second time shortly before the break when Jorgen Strand Larsen poked home from the edge of the six-yard box after a free-kick was squared back across goal.

However, England Under-21 forward Madueke’s treble in 14 second-half minutes settled the game as a contest.

The three goals were nearly identical as the winger scored with low angled shots from inside the area, assisted by Palmer on each occasion.

Joao Felix put the gloss on the result late on when he side-footed the ball high into the net from near the penalty spot after being picked out by fellow substitute – and former Wolves winger – Pedro Neto.

  • EPL: Premier League introduces new set of rules ahead next season

EPL: Premier League introduces new set of rules ahead next season

The English Premier League has introduced new rules for the upcoming 2024/25 football season. The season kicks off on Friday, August 16, 2024, with Manchester United facing Fulham in the opening match.

According to a statement on the EPL website, significant changes will be implemented in how match officials apply the rules. Key updates include:

-Substitutes and Warm-up: Teams are allowed five substitutes per match, a continuation from the previous season. However, only three substitute players from each team may warm up at the same time.

All Retrieval: When the match ball goes out of play and is not quickly retrievable, players must collect a replacement ball from the nearest cone. Ball assistants are not permitted to return the ball directly to players but must place it on a vacant cone. An exception allows ball assistants behind the goals to return the ball to the goalkeeper for a restart.

    – Technical Area Conduct,,Referees will send off technical area staff who deliberately delay the restart of play by holding or kicking the ball away. Players in the technical area who do this will receive a yellow card.

-Added Time Calculation Match officials will only start adding time to the end of the match when the delay between a goal and the subsequent kick-off exceeds 30 seconds. This aims to reduce stoppage time, considering there was an average of 3.28 goals per match last season.

These changes aim to streamline the flow of the game and ensure fair play throughout the season.

  • I’m doing some unpopular things at Man Utd – Ratcliffe

I’m doing some unpopular things at Man Utd – Ratcliffe

Manchester United investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe has admitted that he is unpopular among the club’s staff.

The billionaire INEOS owner has admitted that he has to take unpopular steps to bring United back to the top.

Since acquiring a 27.7 percent stake in the Red Devils, his INEOS group are conducting reviews of all departments at the club.

“Well, I think he… I mean, I think he’s a very sensible man. And he’s an intelligent man. I don’t know,” he said to Bloomberg when asked about Labour leader Kier Starmer, regarding the upcoming UK elections in July.

“I think you probably have to do some unpopular things to get those types of issues dealt with. It’s like at Manchester United, I’m having to do some things which are unpopular.

He added: “I mean, I think at the end-of-the day doing difficult things, and you know, a degree of unpopularity, in a funny sort of way, might make you more popular.

“Because somebody’s seeing that you’re standing up and making some difficult decisions rather than just sort of blowing with the wind a bit.”
