Chelsea co-owner reveals why Thomas Tuchel was sacked

Chelsea co-owner Jonathan Goldstein has explained the sacking of former manager Thomas Tuchel last month.

Tuchel’s sacking came as a surprise given his success during his time at Stamford Bridge, winning the Champions League, a Super Cup, a Club World Cup, and reaching back-to-back FA Cup finals and a League Cup final.

Goldstein, who is co-founder and CEO of Cain International, believes swapping Tuchel for new manager Graham Potter was the right decision and that the former Brighton boss can lead Chelsea to new heights.

“It’s a decision we made as a group that we felt was in the best long-term interests of the club,” Goldstein told Bloomberg. “Ultimately, you need to ensure there’s complete harmony between management & the ownership group. We felt that wasn’t right.

“And we are thrilled Graham Potter is now leading. He had a great win in the Champions League just the other night. And we are sure he will take the club onto greater heights.”

  • I can teach people how not to concede 6 goals – Conte mocks Ten Hag

I can teach people how not to concede 6 goals – Conte mocks Ten Hag

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte defended his tactics after Saturday’s defeat at Arsenal.

Stung by criticism of Tottenham’s supine defeat over the garden fence in north London, Conte levelled an indirect dig at Manchester United’s Erik ten Hag shipping six in their own derby with a reminder his teams have never been so porous.

Conte declared at his Champions League presser: “If we were able to exploit the situation, especially last passes, we would have been able to score many goals against Arsenal. Instead we made really bad mistakes for the last passes because we had the opportunity to go one-to-one, but every team has to think and understand the way to play different games.

“Last season we won 3-0 (against Arsenal) and, when you win, the opponent has to explain, but for me it’s important to have a plan, to put my players in the best possible situation to exploit their characteristics.

“Otherwise it can happen that you can concede six, seven or eight goals – in England that happens a lot of times. In my career never, never happened because I don’t like to play open, concede a lot of space and concede six, seven or eight goals. I won in England, I won in my past and I think I can teach football to many people.”

Granit Xhaka discusses new relationship with Arsenal fans

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka admits he’s thrilled to have repaired his relationship with the Gunners fans.

Xhaka infamously fell out with Arsenal fans back in October 2019, leading to him being stripped of the captaincy, but he has now rebuilt that connection.

“I’ve had much more good times than bad times at Arsenal,” Xhaka told Arsenal’s match-day programme. “The only real down moments I’ve had were the stuff with the fans three years ago, but everything else for me has been very positive, very happy, and there’s been a lot of respect between everyone.

“It was funny because I was joking with Alex Zinchenko in the warm-up [before the Bournemouth game in August]. They were singing his name after just three weeks at Arsenal. I told him: ‘Alex, I’ve been here for six years and I don’t have a song and you have just got here and you do!’

“So I was joking with him on the pitch beforehand, and then at the end of the game I could hear our supporters singing my name. Maybe they heard me chatting to Alex!

“But seriously, it was an absolutely amazing, amazing feeling for me, because everybody knows what I went through with the fans. That’s in the past now.

“To turn it round and be able to show them the Granit that I always wanted to show them, to feel connected and feel their love gave me much, much, much more self-belief, and also more desire to give them something back.

“So hopefully we can stay with this connection now, not just with me, but with all the players, because it’s very important for us to feel the love from the fans.

“I was a bit surprised when I heard it, I didn’t know what to do, but I want to say how much it meant to me and how much I appreciate it.”

There was no belief from beginning – Fernandes reacts to City loss

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes says they must learn from Sunday’s collapse at Manchester City.

United were beaten 6-3 in the local derby, and conceded four goals by half-time.

“The belief in the beginning was not the best and I think that caused us many problems and made us concede early goals,” said Fernandes.

“I think the second half was much better. We kept control more, we controlled the game whenever we had the ball. We were down on the result, so we had to take some risks. And obviously, when we took that risk, we scored straight away. We tried to [go forward] a little bit more but then we conceded more goals. You can’t give that much space to City.

“Obviously, we are really disappointed. But now it is time to focus on the next game and we have to get back the performances we did before [the international break], and the belief and togetherness, and understand this cannot get us down. We need to improve for the future.”

United’s next game will take place this Thursday in the Europa League against Omonia Nicosia in Cyprus, and then the Reds will travel to Goodison Park on the following Sunday to face Everton.

  • Why Man Utd blocked Ten Hag from signing Arnautovic

Why Man Utd blocked Ten Hag from signing Arnautovic

Manchester United board and manager Erik ten Hag worked together over the summer to transform the club’s culture.

The Telegraph says United introduced a “no d***heads” rule in the transfer market under Ten Hag.

United brought in the likes of Lisandro Martínez, Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia in the summer window.

But incoming boss Ten Hag was instructed to sign “no d*** heads”.

That was at risk when they registered an interest in ex-Stoke forward Marko Arnautovic, known for his stroppy attitude.

It is said Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire as well as goalkeepers David de Gea and Tom Heaton have all acted as leaders at United.

And also the WiFi was switched off in a bid to force players to interact with each other.

Diego Costa returns to Premier League

Wolverhampton returns 33-year-old Diego Costa to the Premier League. The forward comes as a free agent.

Insider Fabrizio Romano reports that the Brazilian Spaniard has signed a contract for just one season. The Athletic writes that at first the club doubted that Diego was ready to play in England, but the player’s desire convinced them. For the sake of the Premier League, Costa refused Rayo’s offer.

    Transfer almost was canceled

At the end of the summer, Wolverhampton invested in 25-year-old Stuttgart striker Sasha Kalajdzic – the team needed a striker due to Raul Jimenez’s severe recession. Bayern watched the two-meter Austrian for a long time – they considered him a good option to replace Robert Lewandowski. A little later, English top clubs joined.

Kalajdzic chose the Wolves but tore his ACL in the first game. The British urgently entered the market, but before the end of the summer they did not have time to sign anyone. Then we decided to sort out free agents and stumbled upon the option with Diego.

The transfer could still fail. The fact is that the Football Association of England, after the UK left the EU, tightened the criteria for issuing a permit. The player must score a total of 15 points in several categories: the level of the last club, the games for the national team and the number of minutes spent on the field in recent times. Costa has been without a club since January, so he just didn’t have enough points.

The Wolves sadly filed an appeal against the FA’s decision – and it was unexpectedly accepted.

    Everyone remembers him

In the summer of 2014, he appeared in London and immediately began to break the records of Chelsea and the Premier League – he scored 7 goals in 4 matches. Everything was so good that at Stamford Bridge, Diego was called the boss and fell in love with an obnoxious character that rivals hated.

Costa scored 20 goals, but a year after moving to Chelsea, he fully opened up. It happened in that terrible season when Mourinho looked as helpless as possible and won only 4 matches until mid-December. Costa became the rudest on the team, arrived at the start of the season overweight and went to concerts in Spain between failed matches. Many fans felt that Diego did it out of spite of Jose.

At the very first training session of the new season, Antonio Conte suddenly found out that Costa, after missing out on the Spanish bid for Euro 2016, wanted to leave. Diego scored and received concessions from the coach, but in the winter they came for him with a huge offer from China. The offered 30 million pounds a year struck at the very heart – Costa invented an injury for himself in order to quickly infuriate the club and leave.

The conflict was hushed up, and Diego became Chelsea’s top scorer in the league season. But all the same, he did not enter into Conte’s plans for the next one: the Italian bought Morata and abandoned Costa. He told him about it via whatsapp. Costa was very offended: «Such things should be said in person, and not through text messages. Conte wrote to me when I was in the national team, and the guys in the team did not believe me that this was even possible.»

Costa returned to Atlético Madrid and crossed paths with Chelsea in the Champions League a couple of times. Now they will meet in the Premier League.

  • EPL: Rashford emerges PL Player of the Month for September

EPL: Rashford emerges PL Player of the Month for September

Marcus Rashford has been named Premier League Player of the Month for September.

Rashford was only called for duty in two games in the month of September as fixtures were postponed due to the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, he played against Leicester City on 1 September and Arsenal three days later but his exploits in those games were immeasurable.

Manchester United were highly impressive in the two games securing maximum points with Rashford proving key in both encounters.

The Manchester United forward scored two goals and assisted Antony’s opener in the 3-1 victory over Arsenal, having played in Jadon Sancho to score United’s winner at Leicester at the start of the month.

His four goal involvements in September – no PL player managed more during the month – were enough for Rashford to see off competition from the likes of Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

It is the second time Rashford has received the accolade. The first time he received it was in January 2019.

Manchester City”s Erling Haaland won it for the month of August while, Rashford on the other  end of Manchester won for September.

Both Haaland and Rashford go head to head in Sunday’s Manchester derby at the Etihad.

  • EPL: Premier league sides resume hostilities after a long break

EPL: Premier league sides resume hostilities after a long break

Defending Champions Manchester United face an uphill task against visiting Manchester United in a thrilling derby on Match day eight at the Etihad.

Both teams have been in blistering form of recent with Manchester United on the ascendancy after winning four straight games including victories over Liverpool and Arsenal.

Manchester United’s midfield has played a big part in the recent resurgence by Erik ten Hag’s side – but it is absolutely crucial he gets that area right at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Ten Hag has to decide whether he keeps both Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes in there against Manchester City, or chooses a more defensive-minded set-up and goes with two proper holding players this time.

Meanwhile. City striker, Erling Haaland who has been scoring goals for fun in his debut season at the Etihad will be having another opportunity to add to his tally.

Pep Guardiola’s side will be hoping not to lose their place on the second spot for now depending on whether Arsenal lose or win against Tottenham Hotspurs.

However, Arsenal presently occupy the  top spot  of the Premier League table after a superb start to the season, but face their trickiest test so far with the visit of Tottenham Hotspur to the Emirates this Saturday.

The Gunners only previous match against a ‘big six’ side this campaign ended in a closely fought defeat to Manchester United that has given ammo to many who have accused them of being flat track bullies.

Tottenham Hotspurs will be looking to consolidate on their position on the log as they will aim all three points at the Emirate.

Unfortunately for Tottenham ,forward Son Hueng-min is set to miss a ‘number of weeks’ of action after suffering a fractured arm during the Premier League win over Aston Villa.

The south Korean is due to undergo surgery on the injury this week, and will undergo rehabilitation in order to attempt to return to action as quickly as possible.

After almost a month of waiting, Liverpool finally take to the field in a Premier League game on Saturday.

Brighton are the visitors to Anfield in what really is a must win game for Liverpool.

The Reds injury woes have lessened with many players on the injury list fully recovered and ready to do business for the Reds.

Liverpool will be hoping to secure all three points against Brighton in order to brighten their hopes of being a serious contender in this season EPL.

However, Chelsea will be looking forward to shaking off a shaky start to the season on their match day eight encounter with Cyrstal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Having played at Selhurst Park three times as Brighton manager, Potter was unable to win any of the games, drawing all three 1-1. That itself follows a similar trend across his managerial career in which he is yet to beat the Eagles in six attempts but has only lost two of those.

Potter’s first game in charge of the Blues was a Champions League game with Salzburg of Austria and it ended in a draw.

  • I just have to prove myself to Potter – Pulisic

I just have to prove myself to Potter – Pulisic

Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic says he’s looking forward to working with new manager Graham Potter.

Pulisic, who has a contract until the summer of 2024, insists he wants to convince Potter that he deserves a regular place in the starting XI.

The USA captain has been critical of former manager Thomas Tuchel in his upcoming book.

“I will feel good when I return, quite honestly. I get a fresh start now and I’m excited to play for the new manager,” said Pulisic.

“So I’m really looking forward to it. I just have to prove myself, as everyone does, and as I have done before.”

  • Me and Veron were a disaster at Man Utd – Scholes

Me and Veron were a disaster at Man Utd – Scholes

Former England midfielder, Paul Scholes admits that playing alongside Argentina star Juan Sebastian at Manchester United Veron did not flourish.

Veron was a big money signing at United in the summer of 2001, with manager Sir Alex Ferguson switching from a 4-4-2 to 4-5-1 formation to attempt to win the Champions League at the time.

However, Scholes admit that after Veron signed from Lazio, the duo struggled to find the requisite chemistry on the field.

“It didn’t really matter to me,” Scholes told ex-team-mate Gary Neville on The Overlap.

“I played with Nicky [Butt], I played with Roy [Keane] – Michael Carrick. I loved playing with all of them.

“It wasn’t great playing with people who [were] attacking people, I needed someone who played that [defensive] position really well.”

Neville then asked: “Someone like Veron, you mean?”

Scholes replied: “Yeah, me and Veron were a disaster.

“I think me and Anderson did it once. Just, no, it’s not working, is it? Just two lads who don’t care about defending, don’t know the [defensive] position that well.

“But it worked better with a Michael or a Roy or a Nicky. They were brilliant playing that position, they knew.

“I didn’t know the position that well, I didn’t play in the position that well, as you know.

“You were always moaning about, ‘stay with your runners’ and stuff. [I’d reply] ‘You get them! He’s running to you, you can see them, can’t you?’ I had to play with someone who was disciplined.”
