Irish FA follows suit, postpones matches over Queen’s death

All football fixtures in Northern Ireland have been postponed this weekend following the death of Queen Elizabeth, the Irish Football Association (FA) said in a statement on Friday.

“As a mark of respect following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, this weekend’s fixtures across all affiliated football in Northern Ireland, and all other organised football activity, at all levels, have been postponed,” an Irish FA statement read.

The Queen, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, died peacefully on Thursday at her home in Scotland aged 96.

The British government officially declared the start of a period of national mourning for Queen Elizabeth on Friday, publishing “national mourning guidance”.

The document carried guidance on flying flags, information on travel, and other business and public services.

It stated that the mourning would continue until the end of the day of the state funeral.

The government said there was no obligation to cancel or postpone events and sports fixtures, or close entertainment venues during this time.

It added that this it was at the discretion of individual organisations.

All sports events scheduled for Friday have already been postponed, including the third cricket test between England and South Africa in London and the BMW PGA Championship golf tournament at Wentworth.

The British Horseracing Authority also suspended all events for two days.

England and Scotland postpone football fixtures to honour late Queen

Similarly, the Premier League, lower football leagues (EFL) in England and the Scottish league have postponed this weekend’s fixtures following the death of Queen Elizabeth on Thursday.

Sports event organisers from across the UK were involved in a call with Government on Friday to discuss the staging of fixtures in the wake of The Queen’s death.

Official Government guidance on the period of mourning appeared to give them the go-ahead to stage events as planned this weekend.

But it also advised against putting on anything that would clash with Her Majesty’s funeral.

However, both the Premier League and EFL confirmed the decision had been taken to postpone the next round of fixtures, including Leeds United against Nottingham Forest on Monday.

“At a meeting this morning, Premier League clubs paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

“To honour her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation, and as a mark of respect, this weekend’s Premier League match round will be postponed, including Monday evening’s game,” a statement from the Premier League said.

“Further updates regarding Premier League fixtures during the period of mourning will be provided in due course.”

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters added: “We and our clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty’s long and unwavering service to our country.

“As our longest-serving monarch, she has been an inspiration and leaves behind an incredible legacy following a life of dedication.

“This is a tremendously sad time for not just the nation but also for the millions of people around the world who admired her, and we join together with all those in mourning her passing.”

The EFL had already postponed two matches scheduled for Friday —- Burnley versus Norwich in the Championship and Tranmere v Stockport in League Two.

No date has yet been fixed for the Queen’s funeral.

In a statement, the FA said: “Her Majesty the Queen was a long-standing Patron of The Football Association and has left a lasting and indelible legacy on our national game.

“As a mark of respect, following the passing of Her Majesty the Queen, English football has united to postpone all football fixtures between Sept. 9 and Sept. 11.

The second day of the Test match between England and South Africa on Friday was cancelled on Thursday evening by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Equally, organisers of the PGA Championship golf also suspended Friday’s play.

The British Horseracing Authority confirmed all racing would be cancelled on Saturday.

Fixtures and events are set to return on Sunday, with an additional day at Doncaster scheduled for the St Leger to take place.

The Great North Run, the world’s largest half-marathon, will also go ahead as planned on Sunday.

Man Utd should avoid favouring English players – Eric Bailly

Olympique Marseille defender Eric Bailly has taken a fresh swipe at Manchester United captain Harry Maguire.

Bailly has accused his parent club of “favouring English players” rather than choosing teams on merit.

“The club should avoid favouring English players and give everyone a chance,” Bailly said at his Marseille presentation.

“[The club should] encourage competition in the dressing room, not just look out for some. I’ve always had the feeling that the national player was prioritised.

“That doesn’t happen at Chelsea or other big Premier League clubs. Some people take it for granted that they are going to start, and that weakens the team.

“Luckily [Erik] Ten Hag has a lot of character and I hope he can change that dynamic.”

Bailly revealed he held talks with ten Hag at the end of the 2021-22 campaign, and decided to leave despite the 52-year-old’s desire to keep him because he wanted more regular playing time.

“I met Erik Ten Hag in the dressing room at the end of last season when he went to sign his contract,” Bailly added.

“I was packing my things because my intention was to leave, but he told me he wanted me to stay because he was going to give minutes to everyone.

“I agreed to do the summer tour with United, and he kept his word, but I don’t want to play every now and then. I want to do it every week and feel important. I want to get my confidence back.”

Anthony scores on debut as Man Utd end Arsenal perfect start

Manchester United earned a thrilling victory as Antony scored on his debut and ended Arsenal’s winning run this season with an intense game at Old Trafford.

The Gunners had won all five of their games so far and United have now won their last four on the spin.

Arsenal were on top for long periods, pegging United back in their own half with Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli a persistent threat.

But United’s £82m signing from Brazil was clinical when his opportunity came, curling his shot around goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale against the run of play.

Arsenal got back on level terms when Jesus lost control of the ball in the box and it fell to Bukayo Saka, who comfortably turned it home before Bruno Fernandes picked out Marcus Rashford with a sublime pass six minutes later and the 24-year-old calmly finished his shot.

Mikel Arteta’s side seemed to still be in control until Rashford got his second of the game – a clinical finish from a speedy counter-attack.

EPL: Why Aubameyang will not play for Chelsea – Tuchel

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has revealed why new signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang might not feature soon for the London club.

Aubameyang will not be available for Saturday’s match against West Ham, after travelling to Italy to get a protective face mask fitted.

The 33-year-old suffered a broken jaw in an armed robbery incident at his home in Barcelona.

“We try with a mask. It depends a little bit on what the specialists say, who create the mask for him.

“And then how he adapts to the mask so maybe it could be Tuesday [in the Champions League against Dinamo Zagreb], although maybe this is very soon. So maybe it’s Fulham, maybe it is a week later.

“The very latest [is] after the national break but we try to push things and Auba is happy to push things. He is out there now at the specialist to get his mask done and then he tries, I think, Sunday in training,” Tuchel said.

‘I’ve some unfinished business’ – Aubameyang speaks after joining Chelsea

Premier League club Chelsea have completed the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Barcelona.

The striker joined Barca from Arsenal in January this year, but he has now returned to London in a deal worth £10.3m.

Aubameyang has signed a two-year contract with the Blues.

On becoming a Chelsea player, Aubameyang said: “I’m really happy. It’s an honour to be part of this team and I can’t wait to start.

“I have some unfinished business with the Premier League so it’s good to be back and really exciting.”

Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly said: “Pierre-Emerick is an elite striker with a proven track record in the Premier League and his arrival strengthens our squad, giving us new attacking options. We are thrilled to have Pierre-Emerick on board with us in the new era at Chelsea and we’re really looking forward to working with him.”

Aubameyang spent four years with Arsenal, where he scored 92 goals in 163 appearances.

Klopp reacts after Liverpool put nine past Bournemouth

Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp called it the “perfect football afternoon” after the Reds recorded their first win of the season with a record-equalling 9-0 Premier League victory against promoted Bournemouth.

They were just pipped to the title last term.

But the Merseyside club have struggled in the opening weeks of this campaign as draws against Fulham and Crystal Palace were compounded by Monday’s galling loss at rivals Manchester United.

Klopp’s calls for a reaction were heeded in style on Saturday when nobody inside a rocking Anfield could have predicted they would witness Liverpool matching their biggest top-flight win ever.

Luis Diaz, Harvey Elliott, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Roberto Firmino, and Virgil van Dijk scored in a whirlwind first half against shell-shocked Bournemouth.

Chris Mepham’s own goal set the tone for the second half, with Firmino, Fabio Carvalho, and Diaz scoring as Liverpool just failed to take it to double digits.

Asked to describe the win in one word, Klopp told the post-match press conference: “Needed.

“After a short pre-season with mixed results, having an absolute highlight (by winning the Community Shield against Manchester City) that early in the season, playing really good stuff and then dropping for some reason.

“We were not happy with the way we played. We had good moments in nearly all the games where we showed things which we are strong at, and other things where we have to improve.

“That’s what we had to do today, but you cannot make a list and take them all off the list step by step. You just have to give the game a proper direction and that’s why I loved the start today so much.

“You get this early goal and you get the second. And we kept going, scored different goals but always with the same purpose: keep going, put them under pressure, don’t stop.

“Then it’s 5-0 for half-time and I couldn’t respect more what Scott (Parker) is doing at Bournemouth in not the easiest circumstances, how I can see (it) from outside.”

He noted that at half-time it was important that they, again, kept going because it was early in the season.

“It’s not for us now to control it a little bit and let him score one and have this kind of bitter taste after a wonderful afternoon.

“You get out of the blocks again with 6-0 and then everybody’s scored. We could bring on the kids, which deserve it so much, so we could rotate if we want at the start of the most busy period I’ve ever experienced.

“I can say it already before we’ve played it will be crazy and in the end it was the perfect football afternoon for us.

“A lot of different goalscorers, all these kinds of things. Wonderful goals, fantastic situations and we all know that we needed something like that.”

Bournemouth manager Parker had warned of a potential backlash from Liverpool in the build-up.

He was left rocked by a result that underlined the need for new faces ahead of Thursday’s deadline.

“This is the toughest day as a player and certainly as a coach,” Parker said. “This is the toughest and most painful day that I have experienced, for sure.

“It goes without saying it’s a real humbling experience and one which was pretty shell-shocking, really, in the sense of the result.”

How to get Man Utd back to winning ways – Casemiro

New Manchester United signing Casemiro has told the club that they must develop the right mentality to achieve success.

The Brazil midfielder is enjoying the first week at Carrington after joining from Real Madrid.

“I’m a player that loves to work hard,” he says. “[I am] a player that gives everything on the pitch, but not just over 90 minutes, in training too, which for me is the most important thing.

“For me you train like you play. I feel that’s key to winning games and titles.

“You have to train as hard as possible to play at your best, be strong and fully committed.”

He added: “Of course everyone wants to win matches, win in training, learn in training.

“But I’m one of those players who wants to go home and know that I’ve done my job.

“That’s my philosophy, my mentality and now it’s all about giving everything for Manchester United.”
