  • “Politically Displaced Politicians Plotting To Unseat Tinubu” — Presidency

“Politically Displaced Politicians Plotting To Unseat Tinubu” — Presidency

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has described those calling for the removal of President Bola Tinubu from office as “power-hungry politicians” who feel politically displaced.

He spoke against the backdrop of comments of former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir el-ERufai, that the President would not be re-elected in 2027.

The former Kaduna governor had, in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics programme on Sunday night, said: “I was governor of Kaduna State; I was one of Bola Tinubu’s biggest campaigners, but I couldn’t deliver the state to him. Bola Tinubu himself couldn’t win his state with his own governor in place. So, these things are not as theoretical as people want them to be.

“If you want to engage in self-delusion, you are free to do so. I will not tell you how we are going to win, but I tell you very clearly, the worst-case scenario in the 2027 elections is that no winner will emerge in the first round.

“We may have to go for a runoff, and Bola Tinubu will not be on the ballot for the runoff because he will, at best, be third in the election. He has no pathway to win. I have done the maths, I have done the analysis; he cannot, he will, at best, be third.

“But he can deceive himself; he may think, oh, you know, I have money, because they have taken all the money in the country, I have INEC, I have the police, I have the army. You know what, President Tinubu, invite ex-President Goodluck Jonathan for a chat, and ask him if he didn’t have all these in 2015, and we got him out. Is the case still the same? Similar to 2015? It’s worse.

“It’s like those who say Tinubu has never lost an election. That can be contested, but it’s okay, he’s a political strategist, he’s this, he’s that. Wait.

“I naturally have said, if you want to learn some lessons, invite ex-President Goodluck Jonathan for a chat over coffee, and ask him what happened in 2015. That’s all.’’

But reacting yesterday, Onanuga, in a statement via his X handle, accused el-Rufai of being at the forefront of the campaign of removing the President, despite admitting in the past that four years was not enough for any leader to deliver “meaningful changes.”

He said: “Nasir El-Rufai confesses here that four years is not enough for a political office holder to make ‘meaningful changes’. Yet he is at the forefront of the gang of political desperados plotting President Tinubu’s ouster, just two years into his tenure. What a contradiction!

“In contrast to the political laggards and underachievers who were once governors in Anambra, Rivers and Kaduna states, President Tinubu and his team have implemented meaningful changes in our country over the past two years, positioning us on the path of prosperity.’’

He argued that Tinubu’s administration had achieved significant progress within two years, citing increased foreign reserves, growth in the stock market, harmonisation of the exchange rate, and four consecutive months of inflation decline.

“Phenomenal wealth creation in the stock market has seen ASI skyrocket from 53,000 points to over 140,000 points. Over N26 trillion in additional wealth has been created in the market under Tinubu’s watch,” he said.

Onanuga also pointed to reforms in education and social welfare, including student loans through NELFUND and cash transfers to vulnerable households.

He added that states and local governments were receiving more funds from the centre, enabling them to embark on capital projects and create jobs.

“The governors said they have never had it so good,” he noted, insisting that those behind the alleged plot were acting out of desperation.

He wrote further: “Yet, these power-hungry politicians want the President, who has achieved so much, to be removed, all because they have become politically displaced and irrelevant. May they never succeed in their plot against our nation and people.’’

The presidential spokesman said El-Rufai’s past comments would be used against him during political campaigns.

“Please save the video. We shall confront Nasir with it when electioneering starts,” Onanuga noted..

VP Shettima, governors in NEC meeting

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Thursday chaired the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The meeting has in attendance the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazak.

The Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, was also present at the meeting.

Other attendees are governors of Zamfara, Jigawa, Lagos, Anambra, Gombe, Imo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Benue, and Ondo states, as well as the Rivers State Sole Administrator.

At the end of the meeting, the Council said Nigeria recorded a reduction in the new variant Type-2 Polio virus from 78 cases in 2024 to 42 cases as of August 2025.

The Governor of Gombe State and Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, Inuwa Yahaya, who briefed State House Correspondents shortly after the meeting, however, said Sokoto State is still at high risk.

“Today, we updated the Council on our progress and the achievements. The committee was principally set up to see to the stoppage of the circulating virus two, which is a new variant, and it is more prevalent in the states of the North West, particularly Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara. Also, there was a case in 2024 in Gombe.

“The progress so far made has shown that there is a downward trend, from about 78 cases in 2024 as at the 33rd week, which is the week of our last meeting in August. Now it has gone down to 42 cases.

Also, Kano and Katsina states, particularly, have recorded 85% and 84% reductions respectively, while Gombe has no case at all this year.

“Sokoto is at the back of the seat. So far, out of the 23 cases recorded in 2025, Sokoto has 13 cases, and so the committee has reported that and will discuss with the governor of Sokoto state with a view to strategising and see that they give effective coverage and ensure that routine immunization reaches all the people,” Yahaya said.

  • ‘It should be five years straight’ – Obi on single tenure for President

‘It should be five years straight’ – Obi on single tenure for President

The Presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP) during the 2023 presidential election, Peter Obi has advocated for a 5-year single term for President in Nigeria.

Obi stated this in Bauchi on Friday when he paid a courtesy visit on Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State.

According to him, there shouldn’t be any second tenure for president, adding that instead of the four year tenure, it should be five years as practiced in South Korea.

“I’ve said it and I want to say it again in this government house that if I have the opportunity, we should stop having a second tenure for president.

“It should be five years straight, so that people can come in knowingly they have a job to do.

“What people do now is to be president for one year and use the rest of the years thinking about their next tenure. We must stop it, let’s face the real job, do your own and go,” he suggested.

The 2027 presidential hopeful insisted that if elected as Nigerian president in 2027, he would only serve for one term, promising that he won’t spend a day longer than four years in office.

He added that if given the opportunity to serve Nigeria, he would ensure that every political party functions properly.

Obi said, he would ensure that political parties were bigger than the elected people.

“I want the party to be bigger than the president and the governors so that we can have orderliness,” he said.

Responding, the Bauchi state governor called on Obi to come back to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), saying that that’s where he belongs.

“We want you to come back to PDP. Please come back because that is where you belong.

“We want you to be in PDP, there are plans, desires and strategies,” he said.

Mohammed further said that politics in Nigeria could not be done with ego, differences and personal interest, while calling on all oppositions to harmonise their interests in the interest of Nigerians.

  • South East will produce president, but not in 2027 – Umahi

South East will produce president, but not in 2027 – Umahi

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has said the South East will produce the President of Nigeria but not in the coming election in 2027 and also claimed the region is not being marginalized in the current administration.

He reacted to a publication by one Linus Anagboso (known as D-Big Pen) which claimed that the South East was neglected in road infrastructure development.

This is contained in a statement by Mohammed Ahmed, Director, Press and Public, in the Ministry and made available to newsmen on Monday.

Umahi said that the publication titled “The Politics of Asphalt: Why is the South East Missing from the Map?” was mischievous and deceptive.

He demanded that Anagboso retract the statement immediately.

According to the minister, President Bola Tinubu has been fair to all regions of the country, including the South East.

He noted that Tinubu had revived 90 per cent of abandoned road projects, some dating back to 2013, and still executing new ones without discrimination.

He also said that four Legacy Projects were approved to cover all six geo-political zones.

According to him, one of them, which runs from Cross River through Ebonyi, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa to Abuja, includes a significant portion in the South East; about 231.64 kilometres and is already awarded at a cost of N445.8 billion.

The minister further said that the last Federal Executive Council meeting approved the review of the corridor length to 231.64 km at the same contract sum.

He added that Anagboso deliberately misrepresented this as an Oyo-Benue road to mislead the public.

He listed major projects ongoing in the South East to include the Second Niger Bridge Access Roads; Section 2A in Delta (N146 billion) and Section 2B in Anambra (N176 billion).

Other major ongoing projects the minister said were the Enugu-Onitsha Road (208 km), with MTN Tax Credit funding of N202 billion and CBC handling the remaining sections for N150 billion.

”There is also the Enugu–Port Harcourt Road in four sections; Enugu-Abakaliki, Afikpo-Abia-Imo, Onitsha-Owerri-Aba, Aba-Ikot Ekpene, and Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene,” he said..

Umahi urged the people of the South East to support Tinubu, noting that his administration had shown fairness and love to the region.

He also commended the South East governors for supporting the Federal Government and urged citizens to stand by them as they work for their second term in office.

According to him, One day, the South East will produce the President of Nigeria, but not in 2027.

He reaffirmed his commitment to correcting any false claims meant to deceive the people.

  • Former Colombian President sentenced to 12 years of house arrest

Former Colombian President sentenced to 12 years of house arrest

Ex- Colombian President Álvaro Uribe has been sentenced to 12 years of house arrest after being found guilty of procedural fraud and witness bribery, making him the first former president in the country’s history to face a criminal conviction.

The ruling was delivered by Judge Sandra Heredia of Bogotá’s 44th Criminal Court on Friday, four days after she declared Uribe guilty of the charges. He was acquitted on a separate count of allegedly bribing a prosecutor.

Uribe, 73, who served as president from 2002 to 2010, has denied any wrongdoing. His defense has announced plans to appeal the verdict.

The case stems from a legal battle that began in 2012 when Uribe accused Senator Iván Cepeda of attempting to link him to the creation of a paramilitary group. Cepeda denied the accusation. In a twist, the Colombian Supreme Court launched an investigation in 2018 into Uribe for alleged witness tampering.

After years of legal proceedings, the Colombian Prosecutor’s Office formally charged Uribe in May 2024 with procedural fraud, bribery in criminal proceedings, and bribery. His trial lasted 67 days before concluding this week.

Uribe’s claims of innocence were echoed by political allies, including former President Iván Duque and other members of the opposition. Meanwhile, figures aligned with the current government hailed the ruling as a victory for justice

Senator Cepeda, who has been at the center of the case, welcomed the outcome but noted that legal steps remain. “There is still a long way to go,” he said.

  • Sacked South Korean president resists queries by lying down in underpants

Sacked South Korean president resists queries by lying down in underpants

South Korea’s sacked ex-president Yoon Suk Yeol lay on his prison cell floor in his underwear to resist attempts to interrogate him, prosecutors said Friday.

Prosecutors obtained a fresh arrest warrant on Thursday to forcibly bring the former leader in for questioning over allegations of election tampering.

However, they were “unable to do so due to his strong refusal”, prosecutor Oh Jeong-hee told reporters.

“The suspect refused arrest while lying on the floor without wearing his prison-issued clothing,” she said.

“Due to concerns over safety incidents, physical force was withheld, and the execution of the warrant was temporarily suspended.”

Yoon was wearing “a sleeveless top and prison-issued briefs,” prosecutors said, calling it the “most appropriate way” to describe his attire given the “serious nature of the situation”.

Prosecutors informed Yoon they would have to carry out physical force if necessary in the next attempt.

Yoon was arrested after he tried to impose martial law on December 3, sending troops to parliament to prevent lawmakers from voting down his declaration and plunging the country into political turmoil.

He faces a litany of charges, from insurrection to election tampering, but has refused multiple times to appear at his summons.

Yoon’s legal team said the prosecutors had shown a “disturbing disregard” for “basic human decency”.

“The special counsel turned what should have been a press briefing into a stage for personal humiliation,” Yoon’s lawyer Yoo Jeong-hwa told AFP.

“What kind of legal institution in a civilised country gives a real-time report and commentary to journalists on a detainee’s clothing, especially in a cramped cell nearing 40 degrees (Celsius) (104 degrees Fahrenheit)?”

Yoon’s lawyers said the former president suffers from “several underlying conditions that pose significant challenges to maintaining his health”, making it difficult for him to fully cooperate with the investigation.

South Korea’s justice minister told a parlimentary hearing that it was “frankly embarrassing for a former president to behave that way”.

“He had been wearing a short-sleeved top and trousers, but reportedly removed his prison uniform when the special counsel team attempted to enforce the arrest warrant, only to put it back on immediately after they left,” Jung Sung-ho said.

  • 2027: Atiku, Obi should forget it as odds favour TInubu to reemerge president -Former ACF scribe

2027: Atiku, Obi should forget it as odds favour TInubu to reemerge president -Former ACF scribe

Ex-Secretary General of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Chief Anthony N.Z. Sani has said Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi should forget 2027 as the North would rather allow President Bola Tinubu have a second term in 2027 and wait till 2031 to have one of its own installed as the next president.

This, according to Sani, will enable the North to also have the presidency for two terms of eight years.

The ex-ACF scribe told The Nation in an interview in Kaduna that this thinking in that part of the country will likely count against the ambition of former vice president Atiku Abubakar and the presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, Mr. Peter Obi, in 2027.

The political dynamics surrounding zoning currently favour President Bola Tinubu,” he said.

Continuing, Sani said Tinubu “has only one term left, and after 2027, power is expected by many to return to the North in 2031. That prospect alone will influence how the North votes.

Tinubu, being the only southern candidate constitutionally limited to one more term, is likely to get the support of voters who are thinking beyond 2027.

Southern voters, because of the zoning arrangement and the quest for fairness, would not want the presidency to return to the North just yet.

“They would prefer the presidency remains in the South until 2031 so they can complete their expected eight years before power shifts again.

“Therefore, it is unlikely that the South would vote massively for a Northern candidate in 2027.”

Sani also said most northern voters “would also strategically vote for Tinubu, not only out of loyalty to the late Buhari, but also because it aligns with their long-term interest of producing the next president in 2031.

Supporting Tinubu in 2027 means the North can present a strong case for power to return to their region after his final term.”

Sani said the influence of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari would also play a role in Tinubu’s bid for a second term, especially in the North because, according to him, “Buhari was able to command the loyalty and support of most northern voters largely because he was widely perceived as an honest, disciplined, transparent, principled and austere leader.”

He added: “Northerners saw him (Buhari) as someone who would never dip his hands into public funds for personal gain. That image gave him an uncommon kind of cult followership, especially among the poor.

“With his demise and the evolving political alignments ahead of 2027, I do not think that his political influence will fade or wane substantially, at least not so soon.

“His legacy is still fresh in the hearts of many, especially in the rural North, and that will continue to shape voting patterns for some time to come.

With the passing of President Buhari, I believe President Bola Tinubu may still prevail among northern voters for two key reasons.

“First, because the influence of Buhari, particularly in the North, is still very strong and may not diminish significantly before the 2027 elections.

“Second, because of the politics of zoning and rotational presidency, which is very important to many Nigerians today.

You may recall that when Buhari was still alive, he made it clear he did not support the coalition of opposition forces against the APC.

“He publicly distanced himself from such efforts, which showed that his loyalty remained with the APC platform that brought him to power.

“That endorsement of continuity with the APC by Buhari still matters to many of his supporters today.”

Can the President collude with the NASS to dupe Nigerians? – By Godwin Etakibuebu

My dearly most cherished President Bola Tinubu, I beg of you to consider above question, with absolute sincerity, and try your very best in responding to it, please.

Your response, in whichever way, shall remain one befitting legacy you shall be leaving behind for posterity, knowing fully that, just like every other mortal, you have a limited space of occupation on this side of the divide. Very soon, and again, just like every other human being – this author inclusive, you shall be translating from mortality to immortality.

And by the time we are gone, posterity shall arise to evaluate what we did while we occupied the space allocated to us by our Creator on earth. That would be when our Daniels shall be brought to judgement

The question above is based on finding of BudgIT, while critically looking at the 2025, Budget, currently being implemented by the Federal Government – meaning your government, Mr President. What BudgIT discovered, while on the forensic examination of the Budget is not only alarming but a death sentence on Nigerians.

The Budget Proposal you submitted to the National Assembly, and which was critically scrutinised by the NNSS [so it ought to be] before it became a Bill, which your Honourable-Self later signed into Law, was Padded with 11, 122 budget projects, amounting to the whopping Sum of N9.93 trillion Naira

Mr President, you owe Nigerians absolute responsibility to explain what happened with this 2025 Budget, as it relates to these deadly Padding, which are not going to serve interest of Nigerians but few individuals in the Executive and the NASS. The Sword of Damocles is vicariously hanging on you on this matter, for two major reasons.

One, you and your Executive Arm of Government drew the Budget Proposals before submitting same to the National Assembly – this is your Constitutional responsibility, of  course.

Two, when the National Assembly finished its work of scrutinising, assessing and evaluating the Budget Proposal, it then passed it as a Bill – fit to become Law, only by your assent. It makes you the Alfa and Omega of the whole process. That raises the validity of the question of this essay’s caption.

Did the Budget Proposal you sent to the NASS had these 11, 122 budget projects, amounting to N9.93 trillion in it? If it did not, how come that you did not see this huge and monumental Padding, on the return of the Budget to you, before you signed it into Law?

You owe the Nigerian People adequate explanations, of both [your] actions and inactions on this matter. But let me help you a little further, by explaining what BudgIT stands for, and presenting to you the source and details of the demonic scamming of the Nigerian People, please.

    What is BudgIT

BudgIT is a Nigerian civic-tech organization focused on promoting transparency and accountability in government spending and budget implementation. It uses technology to make government budgets and public finances accessible and understandable to citizens. BudgIT also works to improve citizen engagement, advocate for fiscal reforms, and monitor government projects.

The totally regrettable revelation of the story as presented by the Leadership Newspaper.

Padding: NASS, BudgIT disagree over N6.93trn projects in Budget 2025

    Budget 2025

..How NASS inserted 11, 122 projects budget — BudgIT

..2025 Appropriation Bill interrogated, passed based on the exact amount presented – Senate

…NASS has powers to amend budget — Reps

ABUJA — The National Assembly and a civic organisation, BudgIT, yesterday disagreed over insertion of 11,122 projects worth N6.93 trillion into the 2025 budget.

BudgIT had alleged that the lawmakers padded the Appropriation Bill with the projects it described as not in alignment with the Medium-Term National Development Plan (2021–2025) and other national priorities.

But both arms of the National Assembly, the Senate and the House of Representatives, reacted swiftly yesterday, dismissing allegations that they padded the budget.

They also reaffirmed their powers to amend the budget, as enshrined by the 1999 constitution.

However, BudgiT, which promotes and monitors public finance, said in a statement yesterday that by inserting the projects, which the executive did not envisage, legislators have taken what began as isolated irregularities over the years, to a deeply entrenched culture of exploitation and abuse, with the budget process now turned into a playground for self-serving political interests, led by top-ranking members of the national legislature.

BudgIT said 238 projects valued above N5 billion each, with a cumulative value of N2.29 trillion, were inserted with little or no justification.

Similarly, 984 projects worth N1.71 trillion and 1,119 projects within the range of N500 million to N1 billion, totalling N641.38 billion, were indiscriminately inserted, raising questions about their relevance and alignment with national priorities.

These insertions, according to BudgiT, appeared tailored to satisfy narrow political interests and personal gains rather than the citizens’ interests.

Giving further details of how the padding was done, BudgIT stated: “A closer look shows that 3,573 projects worth N653.19 billion are assigned directly to federal constituencies and 1,972 projects worth N444.04 billion to senatorial districts.

‘’Categorically, some of the most glaring anomalies include 1,477 street light projects worth N393.29 billion; 538 boreholes totalling N114.53 billion; 2,122 ICT projects valued at N505.79 billion; and N6.74 billion earmarked for ‘empowerment of traditional rulers.

‘N1.72trn projects tucked into Agric Ministry’s budget’

“Shockingly, 39% of all insertions, 4,371 projects worth N1.72 trillion, were forced into the Ministry of Agriculture’s budget, inflating its capital allocation from N242.5 billion to N1.95 trillion.

‘’The Ministries of Science and Technology, and Budget and Economic Planning also saw bloated allocations of N994.98 billion and N1.1 trillion, respectively, from insertions alone.

“Even more concerning is the targeted misuse of agencies such as the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (Lagos) and the Federal Cooperative College, Oji River, as dumping grounds for politically motivated projects.

‘’These agencies lack the technical capacity to execute such projects, leading to rampant under-performance and waste. For example, the Federal Cooperative College, Oji River, a training institution, was saddled with N3 billion for utility vehicles to support farmers and distribution agents; N1.5 billion for rural electrification in Rivers State; and N1 billion for solar streetlights in Enugu State.

‘’These are examples of agencies operating outside their mandates, managing projects unrelated to their statutory functions, and adding zero value to national development.

“Despite these findings, the Presidency has remained conspicuously silent. Recall that in the third and fourth quarters of 2024, BudgIT launched the ‘The Budget is a Mess’ campaign to bring these issues to light.

‘’We submitted formal letters outlining our findings to the Presidency, the Budget Office, and the National Assembly. While these letters were acknowledged, no response was received from any of the institutions, and not a single institution has taken responsibility for the anomalies.

‘’Even more concerning is the silence from the Presidency, silence which, in the face of overwhelming evidence, amounts to complicity.”

Commenting on the findings, Gabriel Okeowo, BudgIT’s Country Director, stressed the urgent need to restore integrity to Nigeria’s budgeting process, highlighting how unchecked project insertions by the National Assembly had derailed the purpose of national planning, weakened public trust and diverted resources away from critical development priorities.

Okeowo said: “The insertion of over 11,000 projects worth N6.93 trillion into the 2025 budget by the National Assembly is not just alarming, it is an assault on fiscal responsibility. This trend, increasingly normalised, undermines the purpose of national budgeting, distorts development priorities and redirects scarce resources into the hands of political elites.

‘’Nigeria cannot afford to run a government of projects without purpose. We urgently need transparency, constitutional clarity, and a return to evidence-based planning that puts citizens, not politics, at the centre of the budget.

“In light of the foregoing, we call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to exercise stronger executive leadership and reform the budgeting process to ensure alignment with the Medium-Term National Development Plan (2021–2025) and other national priorities.

‘’We urge the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to seek a constitutional interpretation from the Supreme Court regarding the extent of the National Assembly’s appropriation powers, particularly its authority to unilaterally introduce new capital projects without executive concurrence.

‘’We hope that the anti-corruption agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, will also take action to track these projects and ensure Nigeria gets value for money.

“We also call on citizens, the media, civil society organisations, and the development community to speak out and demand reform.

‘’This is not merely about financial mismanagement, it is a matter of justice, equity and the future of accountable governance in Nigeria. The 2025 budget must serve the interests of the Nigerian people, not a privileged few.’’

Below is what the Senate said about this huge Scam

2025 Appropriation Bill interrogated, passed based on exact amount presented — Senate

Dismissing the allegations yesterday, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu (APC, Ekiti South), said the 2025 Appropriation Bill was presented by the executive, interrogated and passed, based on the exact amount presented.

While advising those he described as ubiquitous but ludicrous political ball-boys to engage in patriotic and truthful endeavours, Adaramodu said: “The dark angels of falsehood and public discord are only interested in stirring disaffection against the National assembly.

“For a long time, there has been a lull in their sordid trade of irreverent propaganda, hence a resort to the latest spurious allegation of budget padding.’’

This comment from the Nigerian Senate is nothing but Balderdash.

Below is what the House of Representative said about the Scam

NASS has powers to amend budget —Reps

On his part, Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on National Planning and Economic Development, Clement Jimbo, dismissed insinuations that the National Assembly padded the 2025 national budget, describing such claims as “completely false” and rooted in “ignorance” of the legislature’s constitutional responsibilities.

Speaking in an interview with Vanguard, Jimbo reaffirmed the National Assembly’s legal authority to review, amend, and approve the national budget, emphasising that the legislature is not a rubber stamp for executive proposals.

He said: “The National Assembly is the arm of government the constitution has empowered to make laws. There is no other arm of government that is saddled with that responsibility.

‘’We make the law, including the budget. The budget the Presidency sends to the National Assembly is called an estimate; it is not yet law until we pass it.”

Jimbo stressed that the legislature has the constitutional powers to modify the budget proposals sent by the executive, including additions and subtractions, to reflect the aspirations of Nigerians.

“If what the executive sends to us is not in tandem with the aspirations of Nigerians, we can change it. Make no mistakes about that. We have the power to change it, amend it, subtract and add. That power is the exclusive right of the National Assembly,” he stated.

Citing an example, Jimbo, who pointed to a recent disagreement over tax legislation, said: “The executive proposed that VAT be increased by 2.5%. We said no, let it remain at 7.5%. The way we treated that is the same way we handle the national budget.”

He expressed strong disapproval of recent reports suggesting that lawmakers arbitrarily padded the budget, calling such narratives misleading and factually incorrect.

The lawmaker added: “I completely disagree with them (BudgiT). It is completely based on ignorance.

‘’The executive cannot send a budget of N50 billion, and we just approve N50 billion. It is practically impossible. If we did that, we would be reducing ourselves to mere rubber stamps.”

He also offered insight into the legislative budget process, noting that the estimates were reviewed by nearly 200 specialised committees in the House of Representatives, each interfacing with corresponding government ministries, departments and agencies, MDAs.

“This is what is called budget defence. If agencies cannot justify their budget proposals, based on previous performance, the National Assembly has the power to slash what they’re asking for. Equally, we have the power to increase the budget for agencies that have been underfunded,’’ he said.

While debunking claims that individual lawmakers could unilaterally divert funds to favoured regions or interests, Jimbo said: “No one senator or House member can sit down and say the budget of a particular region should be channelled to favour anybody. It’s false.

‘’I have participated in the 2023 supplementary budget, 2024, and now the 2025 budget, I have never seen such a thing.”

He reiterated that the recent report alleging budget padding by the National Assembly is “false, to the extent of irresponsibility,” and called for greater public understanding of the legislative process.

“This is not a difficult thing for Nigerians to know, and even for those pushing these narratives to understand. What they are saying is completely false,’’ the lawmaker said.

This comment from the Honourable House of Representative is complete Balderdash.

Mr President, as I draw the curtain on this exercise, permit me to place on record that l have done my very least good in helping you. But it is entirely your vicarious responsibility to uphold and defend your integrity, which is highly at stake now, on this subject matter.

    I salute you most respectfully.

On Dec. 3, Yoon declared martial law during a budget dispute with the opposition, plunging the country into crisis and leading to his impeachment by parliament.

Yoon justified his measure by accusing the opposition of acting against the state and being infiltrated by communists, though no evidence has been provided to support these claims.

The court, in a unanimous ruling, argued that Yoon’s imposition of martial law was not justified by a national crisis.

Likewise, Yoon violated the law when he sent soldiers to the National Assembly to prevent a lifting of martial law.

Acting court chief Moon Hyung Bae read the ruling, which was broadcast live.

“The negative effects on the constitutional order and the repercussions from the defendant’s violations of the law are grave, making the benefits of protecting the Constitution by dismissing the defendant larger than the national losses from dismissing the president by an overwhelming degree,” Moon said.

Yoon said he was sorry for failing to meet public expectations in a statement hours after the court’s decision, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported.

“I deeply regret not being able to live up to your hopes and expectations,” Yoon said in a statement, according to Yonhap.

“It has been the greatest honour of my life to serve our nation. I am sincerely grateful for your unwavering support and encouragement, even when I fell short.”

Yoon’s ruling People Power Party said it “humbly accepts” the court’s ruling, while the main opposition Democratic Party welcomed it as a “people’s victory,” Yonhap reported.

The ruling means new elections must be held within 60 days. Prime Minister Han Duck Soo will remain as acting president until then.

According to recent polls, opposition leader Lee Jae Myung is the early favourite to become the next president. He narrowly lost to Yoon in the 2022 presidential election.

Ahead of the ruling, the area around the court was cordoned off. More than 14,000 police officers were deployed in central Seoul to prevent violent riots.

For Yoon, the legal battles are not over, despite the latest verdict.

He is expected to stand trial on insurrection charges over his imposition of martial law.

If convicted, he could face a lengthy prison sentence.

What I will do better as president in two years than Tinubu – Obi

The 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi has explained how he will perform better than President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Obi disclosed this on Tuesday in an interview on Arise News criticizing the current administration of being ineffective in implementing economic policies.

Obi asserted that if he were the President, the country would have experienced drastic positive changes in two years as he would have injected money into productivity that would lead to a more productive and sustainable economy.

He stated, “The President that is there today, how many years has he stayed? Two years, and look at the turn of things. It means you can change things in two years. That means if I were there, you would have seen considerable change in critical areas. I would tackle corruption head-on, and I would reduce the cost of governance. You would have seen borrowed money invested in critical areas.”

“Also, we have a country that is in huge debt. The current administration met a debt of about N17tn; in two years, it has moved to over N170tn.

“The cost of debt servicing is above the budget for critical areas like health, and education. 70 per cent of our primary health care centres are not functioning. I would fix our PHCs and primary schools if I were president.”
