  • Why I said Lagos is a no man’s land- Bwala clarifies after backlash

Why I said Lagos is a no man’s land- Bwala clarifies after backlash

Daniel Bwala, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication has explained his submission regarding the special status of Lagos.

TheNewsGuru.com(TNG) reports that Bwala during a recent interview described Lagos State as a “no-man’s land” and the pride of Nigeria’s economy.

However, some persons misinterpreted what he said about Lagos State and investments by the Tinubu government.

The presidential aide argued that the concentration of federal projects in Lagos should not be seen as favouritism but as investment in the country’s commercial hub.

However, shortly after the interview, Bwala via his verified X page stressed that his statement during the interview was not in any way meant to contend that Lagos belongs to the Yoruba people.

He added that the unique identity of Lagos as a Yoruba homeland is settled and beyond dispute.

The media aide explained that his argument was for Lagos to benefit from massive investments in infrastructure to sustain the economic and social responsibilities it shoulders not only in Nigeria but in West Africa.

He said, “Culturally, historically, and constitutionally, Lagos belongs to the Yoruba people, and that has never been in contention. The unique identity of Lagos as a Yoruba homeland is settled and beyond dispute.

“What I emphasized was the special place Lagos occupies in Nigeria and indeed West Africa — a city that, much like New York, Paris, or London, serves as the commercial nerve center of our economy. Lagos provides every Nigerian, regardless of origin, a level playing field to thrive, and in this sense, it mirrors the diversity of our nation while remaining firmly rooted in Yoruba heritage.

“My argument was, therefore, and justifiably so, for massive investments in infrastructure to sustain the economic and social responsibilities Lagos has shouldered on behalf of Nigeria.

“Any President who truly seeks to succeed must critically support Lagos, not because it is “no man’s land,” but because it is the heartbeat of the nation’s development.”

  • You lack moral right – APC blasts Obasanjo for criticising President Tinubu

You lack moral right – APC blasts Obasanjo for criticising President Tinubu

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has slammed the former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, over his criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration,  describing the remark as “laughable and disgracefully hypocritical.”

TheNewsGuru.com(TNG) reports that Obasanjo, in his newly launched book Nigeria: Past and Future,  took a swipe at Tinubu, describing his government as the only one competing with the Muhammadu Buhari administration in inefficiency.

“Only Bola Tinubu’s administration seems to be competing with Buhari’s for now,” Obasanjo wrote.

Reacting in a statement on Tuesday, Lagos APC spokesman Seye Oladejo saccusing the former leader of hypocrisy and presiding over a corruption-ridden administration.

Oladejo further stressed that Obasanjo lacked the moral standing to call any government incompetent, noting that his tenure was defined by “political arrogance” and “squandered opportunities”.

According to Oladejo, under Obasanjo, billions spent on the power sector yielded zero results; the economy was left with more debt despite claims of debt relief; the infamous third-term agenda nearly plunged Nigeria into a constitutional crisis; and corruption flourished under his watch.

He further argued that Tinubu had taken bold steps that no previous leader had dared to, citing the removal of fuel subsidies, the overhaul of the foreign exchange system, and efforts to tackle entrenched inefficiencies.

“Obasanjo’s bitterness is well-known. He cannot control this government, and he resents that Nigeria has moved on from his brand of egocentric, do-or-die politics. His habit of attacking sitting presidents when he no longer holds relevance has become predictable and pathetic,” Oladejo said.

He urged the former president to exercise restraint and show leadership by offering constructive advice instead of seeking attention.

“We strongly advise the former president to show some decorum, especially at his age. Elders are expected to advise, not agitate. If he has nothing constructive to say, silence would serve him—and the country, far better than these attention-seeking outbursts.

“President Tinubu is not in a race with Obasanjo or anyone else. He is focused on the future. Nigeria is on a path of reform, recovery, and renewal—and no amount of potshots from yesterday’s bitter men will derail that journey,” he added.

President Tinubu, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala meet in Abuja

President Bola Tinubu hosted the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, at the Aso Villa in Abuja on Thursday.

TheNewsGuru.com(TNG) reports that the closed-door meeting, also attended by Minister of Trade, Jumoke Oduwole, centred on national, continental, and global trade issues.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Okonjo-Iweala revealed that Nigeria had secured a place among four countries selected globally for the newly launched Women’s Exporters’ Fund for the Digital Economy.

She said, “We launched a Women’s Exporters’ Fund for the digital economy. This is a fund jointly managed by the World Trade Organisation and the International Trade Centre to support women to weather the storms of the economy and create jobs for themselves.”

She noted that the initiative, supported by the First Lady, aims to serve as a social safety net to enable Nigerian women to contribute more to the economy.

According to Okonjo-Iweala, 67,000 Nigerian women applied, but 146 emerged as beneficiaries.

“Sixteen of them won what we called the Booster Track, those who already have businesses but need scaling up. They will receive technical and business support from the WTO and ITC for 18 months,” she explained.

  • You are not a tourist – Peter Obi knocks President Tinubu over Brazil, Japan trips

You are not a tourist – Peter Obi knocks President Tinubu over Brazil, Japan trips

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his latest foreign trip, accusing him of neglecting Nigeria’s worsening socio-economic and security crises.

Obi in a statement via his X account, expressed deep concern over what he described as the President’s “insensitivity” to the nation’s challenges, particularly at a time when Nigerians are grappling with unprecedented insecurity, economic hardship, and hunger.

TheNewsGuru.com(TNG) reports that President Tinubu is scheduled to depart Abuja today for a two-nation trip to Japan and Brazil, with a stopover in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. In Japan, he will attend the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama from August 20 to 22.

Obi questioned the necessity of the trip’s length, pointing out that Tinubu had recently visited Brazil and met with the country’s president. “How can anyone explain that a President who came from Brazil recently… is returning to the same country, leaving the various degrees of challenges at home unresolved?” Obi asked.

He further accused Tinubu of prioritising foreign travel over domestic engagement, noting that the President has yet to visit Nigeria’s troubled states. “Our President… takes joy in travelling to foreign countries at the slightest invitation or excuse,” Obi said, adding that the President often departs several days before events, unlike other leaders who arrive just before the start.

Citing a recent example, Obi recalled that Tinubu embarked on a one-week state visit to St. Lucia before attending the BRICS Summit where Nigeria was only present as an observer while leaders of member nations arrived closer to the event date.

The former Anambra State governor warned that Nigeria’s current condition demands the President’s full presence. “Nigeria today demands competent leadership with capacity and compassion… not prolonged, unnecessary absences from a country that requires 24/7 attention,” he stated.

Obi argued that the 12-day trip could have been condensed to five days since the Japan conference begins on August 20. He urged Tinubu to begin domestic tours with the same enthusiasm he shows for international travel, engaging directly with communities to understand and address their plight.

“Mr. President must know that he’s not a tourist, but the Chief Executive of a troubled nation,” Obi stressed. “He must have strict work schedules and travel plans that reflect the urgency of our situation.”

  • President Tinubu reacts to Doyin Abiola’s death

President Tinubu reacts to Doyin Abiola’s death

President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sadness over the death of Dr. Doyinsola Hamidat Abiola, the wife of the late Chief MKO Abiola.

In a personally signed statement on Wednesday, President Tinubu described the late Abiola as a trailblazer in media and a champion of democracy.

Dr. Abiola, an eminent journalist, passed away at 9:15 PM on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, after a period of illness.

In his tribute, Tinubu commended her for breaking gender barriers in journalism; she was the first woman to edit a national newspaper and the first managing director of a daily newspaper in Nigeria.

The Nigerian leader also recalled the good relationship he had with Dr. Doyinsola Abiola, which stemmed from his close connection with her late husband, MKO Abiola.

The full statement by Tinubu reads: “I received with deep sadness the news early on Wednesday of the passing of Dr. Doyinsola Hamidat Abiola, a trailblazing journalist, editor, and former managing director of the defunct Concord Group of newspapers and wife of the late Bashorun MKO Abiola.

“Doyin Abiola, 82, was an Amazon and an icon in Nigerian journalism. She stayed in the journalism course since starting as a reporter with the defunct Daily Sketch after graduating from the University of Ibadan in 1969, majoring in English and Drama.

“She broke the gender barrier, becoming the first woman to edit a national newspaper and the first managing director of a daily newspaper.

“Her immense contributions to journalism and gender equity laid a foundation for generations of women. Her impact on our democracy was even more profound.

“Doyin embodied integrity, tenacity, hard work, commitment to excellence, and dedication to public good and democratic good governance.

“In 1980, she emerged as the pioneer editor of National Concord, owned by the late MKO Abiola. She later became the managing director and editor-in-chief of all the Concord titles, including founding the Weekend Concord, which set new standards for making people the focus of reporting.

“I had a good relationship with the late Doyin, which stemmed from my close relationship with the late MKO Abiola.

“As MKO’s wife, Doyin became acquainted with politics and took a keen interest in it, particularly when her husband ran for the country’s presidency in 1993.

“She played a prominent role in MKO’s election, mobilising and providing direction for the media under her control.

“And when the June 12 election, won by her husband, was annulled, she did not stand aside. Despite the military junta shutting down the Concord Group, she also joined the fray, demanding the validation of the election. She was a soldier of democracy in her own right.

“Nigerians will never forget Doyin Abiola’s leadership during her illustrious journalism career, her championing women’s empowerment, and her commitment to democracy.

“I commiserate with the Abiola and Aboaba families, her only daughter, Doyinsola, and the government and people of Lagos and Ogun States.

“May her soul rest in peace. May this nation be blessed with more women of Doyin Abiola’s calibre and pedigree.”

10,217 killed so far despite Tinubu’s ₦4.91tn security budget – Peter Obi continues to tackle presidency

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has expressed concern over Nigeria’s growing debt, increasing insecurity, and escalating poverty under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He cautioned that the country is on the brink of a severe fiscal and developmental crisis if these issues are not addressed.

In a statement released on Monday, Obi criticized the National Assembly’s recent approval of significant new external and domestic borrowings.

He highlighted a “worrying lack of accountability, transparency, and tangible impact” on the lives of Nigerians as a major concern.

“On July 22, 2025, the Senate approved additional borrowings of $21 billion, €2.2 billion, and ¥15 billion, along with a ₦750.98 billion domestic bond issuance and a €65 million grant. When added to our existing public debt of ₦149.39 trillion as of Q1 2025, we are now staring at a total debt burden of about ₦187 trillion,” Obi said.

He warned that Nigeria’s total debt could cross ₦200 trillion by the end of the year, while noting that the country’s GDP-to-debt ratio has reached historic highs.

“Before rebasing, our debt was equivalent to nearly 70% of our GDP. After rebasing—which pushed the GDP to ₦372.8 trillion (about $243.7 billion)—our debt still stands at over 50.16% of GDP, the highest in our history,” he added.

Despite this massive borrowing, Obi said Nigerians continue to suffer from deteriorating living conditions across key sectors.

The former Anambra State Governor argued that despite the ₦4.91 trillion budgeted for security in 2025—up from ₦2.98 trillion in 2023, security has not improved

“Between May 29, 2023, and May 29, 2025, over 10,217 people were killed, and 672 villages were sacked across the country. How do we explain this horrific outcome despite the trillions spent on security?” he asked.

Obi noted that the state of insecurity, especially in rural communities, continues to drive displacement, hunger, and poverty.

“It is disheartening that while our people are being slaughtered and driven from their homes, we keep approving loans without demanding results from those tasked with protecting lives and property.

  • Presidency counter Kwankwaso’s northern neglect claim, lists 43 projects

Presidency counter Kwankwaso’s northern neglect claim, lists 43 projects

The Spokesperson to President Bola Tinubu, Sunday Dare, has pushed back against claims by former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has neglected northern Nigeria.

In a rebuttal posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Dare, who served as Minister of Youth and Sports Development under the Buhari administration, described Kwankwaso’s remarks as “inaccurate and misinformed,” insisting the North remains a core focus of the Tinubu-led government.

“Senator Kwankwaso. You are wrong. North not neglected,” Dare declared. “President Tinubu has the north covered. Northern Nigeria is not left behind.”

Kwankwaso, who was the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 elections, had accused the federal government of concentrating resources in one part of the country while ignoring the rest.

He said on Thursday that the mismanagement of national resources under the current administration was worsening poverty and insecurity in the North.

But in response, Dare released a list of 43 federal projects and initiatives currently underway across northern states, spanning infrastructure, energy, health, agriculture, and transportation.

Among the highlighted projects are major road constructions such as the Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano expressway, Sokoto–Badagry expressway, and the Sokoto–Zamfara–Katsina corridor.

In the agriculture sector, Dare cited the $158.15 million Value Chain North (VCN) programme implemented in nine northern states, the Kolmani Integrated Development Project in Bauchi and Gombe, and the World Bank-funded ACReSAL climate resilience project.

rrigation development through the Kano River Project was commissioned in 2023 and remains operational,” he added.

On healthcare, Dare noted federal investments in the revitalisation of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital in Zaria, Jos University Teaching Hospital, and over 1,000 primary healthcare centres across the region.

He also pointed to key energy infrastructure such as the 614-kilometre Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano gas pipeline, the Gwagwalada Power Plant, and solar power projects in Kaduna, which he said are “positioning the region as a growing energy hub.”

For transportation, the projects listed include the Kaduna–Kano and Kano–Maradi rail projects, N100 billion allocated for the Kaduna Light Rail system, and the ongoing rehabilitation of the Abuja metro line.

“All of these in only two years by President Tinubu,” Dare wrote, defending the administration’s record and directly challenging Kwankwaso’s critique.

He further mentioned regional development and environmental initiatives such as the Trans-Sahara trade corridor, the Great Green Wall programme, and erosion control works under the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP).

The exchange has drawn widespread attention on social media and within political circles, with many observers dissecting the figures and claims presented by both sides.

While Kwankwaso’s comments sparked concerns over regional marginalisation, Dare’s detailed response appears aimed at reinforcing the administration’s narrative of inclusive national development.

  • The whole country is proud  in the way President Tinubu was buried – Akpabio makes shameful blunder

The whole country is proud  in the way President Tinubu was buried – Akpabio makes shameful blunder

Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Wednesday during a Senate session made a huge blunder after mistakenly referring to President Bola Tinubu as having been buried.

TheNewsGuru.com(TNG) reports that the senate president made the mistake while trying to praise the President Tinubu-led administration on its conduct during the funeral of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Speaking, Akpabio in a slip of the tongue, said the country was proud of how President Bola Tinubu was “honored and was buried.”

The Senate President quickly corrected himself, clarifying that he meant to say President Muhammadu Buhari.

“And the whole country is very proud of what this administration has done in the way and manner President Bola, Ahmed Tinubu, was honored and was buried. And you can see, even from President Buhari, rather, sorry, President Buhari was honored and buried”, he said.

The gaffe which attracted mixed reactions on social media comes  barely few days after Imo State governor, Hope Uzodinma made a similar error.

During the Constitution Review Zonal Public Hearings in Owerri, Uzodinma mistakenly referred to President Bola Tinubu as the former President and a deceased individual.

However, Uzodinma’s solemn prayer took an unexpected turn when he made a slip of the tongue that has since triggered reactions online.

Naija News reports that Uzodinma, while offering prayers for the demise of former President Muhammadu Buhari, said, “May the soul of former President Bola…” before pausing briefly.

He then continued, “Former President Muhammadu Buhari, and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.”
