Why president Tinubu must bring back cashless policy – Yul Edochie

Yul Edochie,  the Nollywood actor, has pleaded with President Bola Tinubu to revive the cashless policy introduced by former President, Muhammadu Buhari.

The controversial Nollywood actor, in a post shared on Instagram explained that the policy had a positive impact on the nation’s economy as it strengthened the naira and brought down the prices of goods.

The actor cum filmmaker noted that lower denomination notes like ₦5, ₦10, ₦20, and ₦50 began to hold value again when the policy was in place.

The actor also stated that the cashless system played a major role in reducing kidnapping across the country, as it limited access to physical cash by criminals.

Edochie urged the President to consider bringing back the policy for the benefit of the nation.

“To my leader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR @officialasiwajubat, I humbly suggest you bring back the cashless policy. When it was introduced by the previous administration, it increased the value of the naira tremendously.

“It helped to bring down prices of goods and it made 5 naira, 10, 20 and 50 naira notes regain value. The cashless policy also helped to reduce kidnapping massively. Consider it again Sir,” he wrote.

BREAKING: New ECOWAS chairman takes over as President Tinubu’s tenure ends

Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, has succeeded President Bola Tinubu, as the new chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government.

This was made known in a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Sunday by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

TheNewsGuru reports that President Tinubu chaired the regional economic bloc for the past two years.

TNG recalls that Tinubu, on Sunday, received West African leaders at the 67th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), held at the Banquet Hall of the State House, Abuja.

The high-level summit, which comes six months after the last session in December 2024, marked the conclusion of President Tinubu’s second term as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority, a role he was re-elected to on July 7, 2024, after initially assuming office on July 9, 2023.

The 67th Ordinary Session was convened at a critical time, as the regional bloc continues to reel from the withdrawals of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger Republic, whose military juntas announced their exit from ECOWAS earlier in the year.

Discussions at the summit are expected to address the bloc’s internal challenges, growing insecurity, democratic backsliding, and the need for deeper economic integration among member states.

Speaking earlier on Saturday at the inaugural West Africa Economic Summit (WAES), hosted at the newly inaugurated Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, the Nigerian president called for a paradigm shift in how the region manages its mineral wealth.

Tinubu said, “The era of warm pit to the port must end. We must turn our mineral wealth into domestic economic value, jobs, technology, and manufacturing.”

He emphasised the need for value addition and regional manufacturing, noting that the status quo of raw mineral exports only limits the region’s potential for sustainable growth.

Pastor Bakare visits President Tinubu weeks after condemning his administration

Pastor Tunde Bakare, the presiding overseer of the Global Community Citadel Church, on Wednesday, paid a courtesy visit to President Bola Tinubu at his Lagos residence.

At the time of filing this report, the details of the visit were yet to be made public.

TheNewsGuru, however, reports the visit comes barely two months after the outspoken clergyman warned that Nigeria is spiralling into tyranny and suffering from a brazen abuse of power under the administration of President Tinubu.

Speaking during his state of the nation address marking the Easter celebrations in April, Pastor Bakare expressed his deep concern over the direction of the country under the current administration.

He highlighted the apparent erosion of democracy, particularly criticizing the collapse of the legislature, which he called a “bastion of democracy” that is now failing under the President’s leadership.

Bakare also pointed to the state of emergency declared in Rivers State by President Tinubu as a clear example of what he termed a “theater of the absurd.”

He slammed both the President’s actions and the National Assembly, which he accused of endorsing the measure. According to Bakare, the National Assembly has become the “most spineless” in Nigeria’s history, allowing for the President’s actions to go unchecked.

“Under your watch, Mr. President, the legislature has become a mere rubber stamp, endorsing every action you take without scrutiny,” Bakare said, referring to the passive role the National Assembly has played in the current political landscape.

In a statement issued earlier this week, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, outlined that the President’s delegation would include senior Catholic leaders from Nigeria.

According to Onanuga, the invitation was extended by Cardinal Pietro Parolin on behalf of Pope Leo XIV, who expressed a personal connection to Nigeria. Pope Leo XIV noted, “Your great nation is particularly dear to me as I worked in the Apostolic Nunciature in Lagos during the 1980s.”

Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, will be formally installed as Pope on Sunday, May 18, in a ceremony at St. Peter’s Square.

It is a great joy for me and a great honour. Your ascendancy to the throne of your fathers is historic. It is the will of God and the heart of the people.

“I am following up on your foresight for development, your humility, and the fact that you uphold the traditions of your people.

“The inherited tradition is the making of the Almighty God. Your ascendancy to the throne, like my becoming a president, is the divine will of the Almighty God,” he said.

The president noted that the “hurdles, processes, and anxiety” along the way were part of the preparation for the position.

President Tinubu commended the traditional council for the ease in nominating and crowning the 46th Alaafin following Oba Lamidi Adeyemi’s passing on April 22, 2022.

“I am happy that you have shown character and discipline and uplifted your people’s name, values and culture, even when you were in Canada. I am glad you have become a hope of sustaining the Yoruba race,” he added.

The president said his administration will continue working with traditional institutions to implement policies to protect and prosper citizens.

“The peace and stability of our nation require inclusiveness. This job is not one you can do alone. We have to pull ourselves together to build a nation of prosperity.

“Our priority is still education and Medicare. We want to uplift education and cultural values. Our door is open for participation,” he stated.

President Tinubu told the king that the sons of the Oyo kingdom serving in his office have done well, including Ambassador Victor Adeleke, State Chief of Protocol, and Colonel Nurudeen Alowonle Yusuf, the Aide-de-Camp.

Today, I speak not just as the custodian of culture and tradition but as a voice for my people, who are deeply honoured by the audience you have granted us here at the heart of the national leadership.

Your gracious reception is more than protocol. It is a mark of your character, statesmanship and enduring regard for the traditional institutions. The people of Oyo remember your journey as a man who rose through the crucible of political struggle with unmatched courage and charity. You won many hearts as an activist, strategist, bridge builder, and now as the nation’s foremost leader”.

The monarch said Nigerians look up to the president for a new direction.

Nigeria looks up to you, not only for leadership but for restoration. For a new vision rooted in justice, equity and inclusive progress. It is in that spirit that I have come to seek your collaboration. Oyo is ready, the Yoruba are ready, and Nigerians are ready.

“We understand that national transformation is not by government alone. It is built when ancient wisdom meets modern governance. When institutions, old and new, work hand in hand,” he said.
