Presidency speaks on acquiring multi-billon naira yacht spotted in France

The Senior Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on digital and new media, Otega Ogra, on Saturday, disowned a yacht spotted with the Nigerian flag in St-Tropez, a coastal town in France.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that a video of a “presidential yacht’’ allegedly belonging to the Nigerian government being used for vacation at St Tropez” surfaced on social media over the weekend.

Reacting via the microblogging platform, X formerly Twitter, the presidential aide said the yacht belongs to a private individual.

Ogra further stressed that flags used by the president or armed forces do not contain the coat of arms like the one on the yacht.

Ogra said on Saturday, “There have been false claims circulating that a private individual’s yacht was spotted in St. Tropez is a Nigerian government yacht. Here are some points to consider in order to discern the truth.

“The 42m Bennetti yacht currently being shared online has been privately owned for around 5 years since it was constructed.

“It is important to note that this specific yacht has no connection or ownership ties to the Nigerian government, president or armed forces. Any claims or assertions suggesting otherwise are simply not true and inaccurate.

“It is not uncommon for luxury yachts to fly the flag of the owner’s country as well as the flag of the country in which they are registered.

“The official Nigerian flag is Green-White-Green without a coat of arms in the middle. Flags representing the Nigerian President or the Armed Forces do not contain a coat of arms in the center. Placing anything in the center of the flag is a clear deviation.”

He did It to Goodluck – Reactions as Nigerians protest with mock coffin of Tinubu

A video of angry protesters carrying a mock coffin of President Bola Tinubu on a Keke Napep has caused a stir on social media.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the nationwide protests against hunger, economic hardship started on Thursday, August 1, 2024, and have been scheduled to stretch till August 10 across all states of the Federation as well as the nation’s capital Abuja.

The protesters in Delta State who joined other Nigerians across the country to call on President Bola Tinubu to reverse certain policies believed to be behind the harsh economy were seen carrying a mock coffin of Tinubu on a Keke Napep.

They also held placards with inscription such as ‘’President reduce the cost of fuel,’’ Hunger dey,” amongst others.

Reacting to the viral video, netiziens recalled how Tinubu and his supporters had during the anti-fuel subsidy removal protests of 2012 held a mock coffin of former president, Goodluck Jonathan.

They highlighted a sense of karma, with users stating that Tinubu is now experiencing what he once dished out. Other commenters were rather amused, noting the presence of escorts during the protest.

Tomy Tom wrote: “The same thing he did to goodluck ,karma is a bitch best knacked in cold weather.”

Peter Obi should be held responsible for anarchy – Presidency reacts to nationwide protest

The Bola Tinubu- led administration has accused supporters of the presidential candidate of the Labour party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi of sponsoring the planned nationwide protests against economic hardship.

President Tinubu, through his Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, without evidence, alleged that the protest organisers are the same individuals involved in the 2020 ENDSARS protests, which were infiltrated by separatist elements.

Onanuga further warned that the planned demonstrations could lead to anarchy and said the former Anambra governor should be held accountable for any resulting crisis.

Onanuga claimed that the protest, promoted on social media with hashtags such as ‘EndBadGovernance’ and ‘Tinubu Must Go,’ is an attempt to destabilizlse Nigeria due to Obi’s loss in the last presidential election.

Onanuga described the organisers as “anarchists” rather than democrats, accusing them of attempting a “civilian coup” against President Tinubu.

The statement partly reads, “If they understand the meaning of their hashtags, they will realise they are clarion calls for treason. Wanting to end an elected government is high treason. Wanting revolution is a call for a coup d’etat, which is also high treason.

“I have been on the trail of one of the protest planners, who is nameless but claims to have an internet radio station, PTM100.88 Abuja. The anonymous person joined X in August 2022 and has 520 followers today, among whom are FS Yusuf, another rabid Obi supporter, and Professor Pat Utomi, a Labour Party chief and a guy on X who goes by the pseudonym Peter Obi’s First Son. PTM’s profile image has someone holding the inscription` Certificate Forger Not My President, ‘ with a photo of Peter Obi as an inset. Only Obi’s supporters will be talking about certificate forgery long after the Supreme Court dismissed the allegation.

“In the past 24 hours, this faceless X user has been whipping up the gullible to join the protest being planned and also posting the activities of his Messiah, Peter Obi. He retweets Peter Obi often.

“In one of the posts, a video shows a teenager, who is said to be in the North, printing T-shirts emblazoned with “EndBadGovernance in Nigeria 2024′.

“There is also a retweeted post by Babatunde Gbadamosi, a failed and frustrated politician in Lagos. In it, he refers to his earlier post urging people “ to identify APC members, sponsors, supporters, enablers, thugs, promoters, and appointees.” The police and DSS ought to have arrested the man for making a brazen threat to political opponents.

There is “General Oluchi,” a woman who goes by the screen name “A Field Marshall of the Han Dynasty.”

“She has been sending out letters of mobilisation. She even pinned a “Week 6 “ letter urging Nigerians to wake up and take control of their country, using the language of IPOB, Peter Obi, and his supporters.

“Another member of the malcontents is Brother Bernard, also known as Mikael C. Bernard. He is not based in Nigeria because he was once busted over Binance and fraudulent crypto businesses in Nigeria. Bernard was the man who once wrote that the naira should go down to zero.”

Onanuga added, “Security agents should, by now, begin to interrogate these agents of destabilisation. There is no country in the world where people are not going through some economic challenges and where the cost of living is not a major issue. No country is immune from economic turbulence at the moment. Civilised and democratic people wait for another election to make leadership changes. They don’t trigger mayhem in their countries by staging protests, the end of which nobody can predict.

“Nigerian citizens must consider the government’s attitude and concern about the cost of living crisis when deciding whether to join the protests by the Labour Party and IPOB supporters.

“The Tinubu government has not been found wanting in this regard. The minimum wage has been increased by more than 100 percent. Loans are being disbursed to students in tertiary schools. A credit corporation has been launched to promote consumption credit. Palliatives, including the latest distribution of 740 trucks of rice to the 36 states and Abuja, are being rolled out. Businesses, such as pharmaceuticals, are being assisted. The Federal and state governments are investing heavily in agriculture to produce more food.

“The economy is improving, inflation is slowing, the national debt has been reduced in dollar terms, and the FIRS has increased revenue generation to record levels. Investors are coming back to our country. Our stock market is the best in the world, with a 33 percent return on investment.

“President Tinubu has a four-year mandate to run his agenda. Those calling for protest should wait till 2027 to either re-elect him or elect their Messiah, Mr Peter Obi.”

Emeka Ike Tasks Tinubu On Campaign Promises At First Anniversary

Nollywood actor, Emeka Ike has called on President Bola Tinubu to honour his campaign promises to the creative and entertainment industry, as he marks his first year in office on May 29.

The veteran actor, while speaking on Tuesday expressed optimism that the administration of President Bola Tinubu will transform the entertainment and creative industry.

The 57-years-old noted that the “economic confusion” left by the former government made it too early to evaluate the progress made so far by the present administration.

Ike, then urged Tinubu to implement policies that support growth and development for artists and producers nationwide.

He said, “Yes, l see it coming. Considering the huge economic confusion left behind by the last administration, it will be trite to expect too much in 1 year. He (Tinubu) is a development oriented leader, putting in mind his developmental layout for Lagos state, which is fast changing the periscope of our old Lagos. Yes, he has the campaign promises in mind and will achieve it in due time.”

Emeka Ike stressed that the president needs to build Nollywood a film village to enhance the growth of the entertainment sector.

He continued saying, “Giving Nollywood a contact address. My friends in Hollywood always ask the question “where is Nollywood contact address?” We need to situate and properly institutionalise the entertainment industry. Foreign companies, coming to film in Nigeria, cannot be properly taxed as it were today.

“We still run our old individual production houses, studios and an unorganised entertainment system. The existing Abuja film village is not properly synergistic with Nollywood. We barely know if it exists, how it works and our due interest in it all. The film school in Jos is totally a government affair. Our concerns are not integrated into their scope of operations. Hence, we will need an entire ‘film village’ to call our contact place.

“So, l urge His Excellency president Bola Ahmed Tinubu to not relent on his campaign manifesto, to build us an altra modern film village, to house our movies and music hubs in Nigeria, as it exists in Hollywood. Then entertainment GDP will astronomically rise in our economy.”

The Nollywood actor further condemned the interference of the National Film And Video Censor Board (NFVCB) in the creative process of movie production following the board’s recent campaign for the ban on money ritual and smoking scenes in movies.

  • Atiku knocks Tinubu over hike in electricity tariff

Atiku knocks Tinubu over hike in electricity tariff

Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) has said that the increase in electricity tariff will create more difficulties for Nigerians.

Atiku made his points known by taking to platform X on Friday evening.

In his post, Atiku said the Federal Government was unleashing another dose of reforms without adequate notice and without an adequate post-reform plan to mitigate the pain.

His words reads: “The increase in electricity tariff comes at a time when Nigerian citizens are going through excruciating difficulties occasioned by the withdrawal of subsidy on PMS and floating of the domestic currency.

“The government has not successfully dealt with the pains associated with the implementation of those measures, and now this. The hike in electricity tariff will create more difficulties for the citizens as inflationary pressures are elevated. Our manufacturing sector will similarly be impacted negatively. Not only are they paying higher interest rates on their bank loans but also paying more for diesel, paying higher wages as a result of the new minimum wage. The President’s men are pushing the economy into a deeper crisis. His reforms are without a human face.

“It is important that we understand the root cause of the inefficiencies in the power sector before unleashing another dose of reforms. It is time to revisit the privatisation exercise that produced the DISCOs.”

The former Vice President also listed things Tinubu must do following the hike in electricity tariffs.

“Tinubu must (a) ensure that these reforms are sequenced, (b) implement measures to mitigate the pain, and (c) hold the NERC responsible for ensuring improved service delivery,” he wrote.

  • Supreme Court upholds election verdict, rejects prejudice claims

Supreme Court upholds election verdict, rejects prejudice claims

The Supreme Court has ruled that the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) did not exhibit bias while delivering its September 6th judgment in favour of President Bola Tinubu.

This decision came in response to claims by one of the appellants, Atiku Abubakar, that the PEPC had used disparaging words that indicated bias.

Justice Inyang Okoro, who chaired the Supreme Court panel, stated, “I have read the judgment of the court below, and I’ve seen the context in which those words were used, and it is my view that they were not meant to disparage the appellant or their counsel.

“As judges, we are trained to be temperate in our use of words and we shall continue to do so. Litigants are advised to trust the court whenever their matters are before it.”

Justice Okoro further cautioned appellants and their counsels against engaging in media trials and judgments when a case is pending before the court.

Atiku had alleged that during the PEPC’s judgment, the judges used expressions that implied bias, such as “ludicrous,” “clever by half,” “dishonorable practice,” “smuggle,” and “fallacious.” He argued that these words suggested prejudice and bias on the part of the PEPC.

“It is the position of the appellants that the choice of words and expressions by the lower court shows the lower court’s contempt and disdain for the appellants,” he said.

In their appeal, Atiku and PDP lead counsel, Chris Uche, contended that the PEPC’s judgment was not only perverse but also marred by a grave miscarriage of justice against Atiku.

They asserted that the PEPC erred in law by not annulling the presidential election, even though evidence showed INEC’s breach of electoral laws.

However, the Supreme Court, in dismissing the appeal filed by Atiku, PDP, and the Labor Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, upheld the PEPC’s judgment and declared Tinubu as the duly elected President of Nigeria.

In response to the verdict, President Tinubu stated that the affirmation of his victory in the presidential election was justice for all Nigerians, putting an end to shenanigans and trials in the media and public space.

He commended the court’s commitment to the rule of law and justice for all citizens, regardless of their backgrounds.

  • Nigeria’s $1.5B World Bank loan spark concerns

Nigeria’s $1.5B World Bank loan spark concerns

A former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and presidential aspirant under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Kingsley Moghalu, has raised concern over Nigeria’s plan to borrow $1.5 billion from the World Bank.

As part of the government’s efforts to address the fiscal gap in the 2023 budget, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning Wale Edun, confirmed plans to secure a $1.5 billion loan from the World Bank.

“On the talks with the World Bank on $1.5 billion budget support, that is correct. The World Bank is the number one multilateral development bank helping developing countries or funding developing countries, projects and programmes, and sectors,” Edun said, adding “the World Bank money is the cheapest”.

The minister pointed out that the country has taken bold and courageous steps to attract investments and that Nigeria was now top consideration when people are looking at where to invest.

“Nigeria is definitely on the right path; we have taken the right decision for the economy to recover and for it to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI),” he added.

But Moghalu criticized the increasing borrowing trend while high-value purchases, like SUVs worth N160 million each for 360 House of Representatives members, are being considered and called for prudent management of the countries finances.

He said if he were President, government officials would not use public funds to buy foreign-made vehicles for official purposes when suitable local options are available.

His words: “If I were President of Nigeria or Governor of a State, no government official will drive a foreign made vehicle at government expense (procurement) when we have local alternatives.

“That is one demonstration of patriotic leadership and commitment to cutting the cost of governance. Anyone can order whatever vehicle they want with their personal funds, but official vehicles? No.

“There is a real problem when Nigeria is set to borrow another $1.5 billion from @WorldBank for budget support, and SUVs worth N160 million each are reportedly to be bought for 360 members of the House of Representatives. We are not yet serious as a country. Nigeria is becoming a carcass, and our political class its scavengers!”
