How Traditional rulers can help tackle insecurity in the country – Ooni tells President Tinubu

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi-Ojaja II, has said that traditional rulers are well grounded on insecurity issues, saying President Tinubu should consult them about ways to tackle insecurity in the country.

He gave the charge during a courtesy visit by the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN) to the President at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.

Ooni, who is also the co-chair of the traditional rulers of Nigeria, noted that the Traditional rulers would like to work with the president to tackle insecurity in the country.

Ooni said “There are areas we would like to work with you, one of which is security. It is time to use us more, we are not saying we are idle…but to make your work easier, use us.

“The foundation of this country today are the traditional rulers. We are here to pledge our loyalty and support. We want to work with you to ensure you leave a legacy.

“Don’t underestimate what traditional rulers can do”, he said.

Earlier, Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, said the visit is a normal tradition by the monarchs whenever there’s a change in leadership of the country.

He said the monarchs are people of different professions, from the military to judiciary and businessmen, who have what it takes to contribute to the betterment of the society, saying, “whenever you reach out to us, we will be here.”

The Sultan, who said the monarchs do not envy President Tinubu at this time with the numerous challenges facing the country, however, expressed confidence that with the combination of himself and Vice President Kashim Shettima, they will deliver.

He said: “We thank God for the smooth way the elections took place. Many negative people thought this country would collapse, but we are still here.

“We are here for you, for our people and our country. If you don’t reach out to us, we will reach out to you.

“We wish you the most successful tenure in good health.”

Also in attendance is Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

Traditional rulers drawn from the country’s six geo-political zones attended the event.

  • We will protest in the next seven days if fuel subsidy is not reversed – Grout tells Tinubu

We will protest in the next seven days if fuel subsidy is not reversed – Grout tells Tinubu

A group operating under the auspices of the Free Nigeria Movement has called for immediate reversal of fuel subsidy removal by the government of President Bola Tinubu.

The group has threatened to mobilize a mass protest if the President doesn’t revert to the old pump price of Premium Motor Spirit.

Addressing journalists at a press conference on Thursday in Abuja, the convener of the group, Dr Moses Paul said the movement was aware of ongoing talks with the Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC)

He alleged that lobbying by actors for the new pump price was ongoing and called on the NLC not to succumb to anything short of reverting to the old pump price, insisting Nigerians cannot cope with the present situation.

“We are aware of ongoing talks with the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the many actors lobbying for an acceptance of the new pump price by the NLC leadership.

“We call on the NLC to remain steadfast.

Dr Moses, who was flanked by the group’s executives and empty containers to demonstrate “the black market boom business at filling stations”, noted that poor people have the right to live with the rich.

”This is the only country we have. We will defend it with every stretch of our being standing on the law. This is the only way that Nigeria can stand for the good of all. As always, Let Nigeria Win.

They condemned the pronouncement by President Tinubu, describing it as dictatorial, even as there were no consultations.

“The dictatorial pronouncement on the removal of subsidy by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose ascension to power awaits confirmation by the courts, is a credible specimen in the scholarly hall of politics and governance.

The rush by his mouthpieces to ‘explain’ a clear and unambiguous statement to a deeply traumatized citizenry will make poor reference material in Damage Control”, he said.

  • Buhari failed Nigerians in the eight years that he served – Bode George

Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) Chief Bode George  has described President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight years in office  as a failure.

According to him, Buhari failed to live up to Nigerians expectations in eight years that he served as president.

Addressing journalists in Lagos on Saturday, the PDP chieftain said history will judge Buhari’s government because it failed to impact Nigerians positively.

George added that Buhari also failed woefully in the are of security

The elder statesman berated Buhari for failing to deliver on his electoral promises of fighting corruption among other things.

According to George: “My personal assessment is that he failed, not completely in every sector, but if you do an examination and say you must have a minimum of 33%, then you can go to the next class, but they did not attain that 33%.

“I can give them maybe about 5%, even the 5% requires a lot of retrospection.

“So it is very very disheartening and heartbreaking that he failed in his number one job, which is to guarantee security of lives and property.

“So let’s put those promises now into his departure because that’s what will be written on the pages of history. Whatever a leader does during his time, it is on the pages of history.”

Southern, Middle Belt leaders call on Buhari to rescind decision to request for $800m loan

The Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF) has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to rescind his decision to request for the approval of $800 million loan from World Bank.

Recall that just few days to leaving office, president Buhari wrote to the  Senate and House of Representatives to approve the loan request to finance the National Social Safety Network Programme.

However, in their reaction, the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders said in a communiqué issued at the end of its meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday that the country’s indebtedness has reached the skies.

The meeting, chaired by elder statesman

One of the leaders, Edwin Clark, deliberated on the present state of affairs in Nigeria, especially the renewed siege of insecurity around the country, the ongoing post-election judicial process in the various tribunals and the national economy.

The SMBLF restated “its time-tested position that the future of Nigeria can only be sustained on the basis of true federalism and respect for the autonomy of the federating units.

“Expresses shock at the escalation of killings, pogroms, total destruction of entire communities and means of livelihood in several targeted areas in select states since after the 2023 General elections, mainly in Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, Southern Kaduna, Kebbi, and various states of the South East, where hundreds of armless citizens are being slaughtered daily.

“Notes with grave concern that the nation’s security agencies have continued to show unwillingness to decisively deal with the perpetrators of these monstrous acts, or rather, deliberately turned a blind eye to the atrocious occurrences, thereby exposing the country to a seeming state of war. It is shameful that non-state actors are allowed to openly tote dangerous weapons about and rampage the country unhindered.

“Condemns, in unmistakable terms, the cavalier and totally nonchalant attitudes of the outgoing governors of some states over the collapse of security in certain parts of their states, which has continued to exacerbate the worrisome situation, and hopes their successors will show greater commitment to the welfare of their citizens who are the victims of this sad situation.

“Further warns that the continuous abdication of Government’s primary and abiding constitutional responsibility of safeguarding the lives and properties of its citizens is an irresistible signal to Nigerians to exercise their inalienable rights of self-defence, by all means.

“Again deplores the inhuman plight of thousands of indigenous people in the Middle Belt states driven out of their homes and have now become Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) for years as well as several other Internally Displaced Persons in different parts of the country, left to live in conditions that impinge on their human rights as citizens of this country. Hence, calls on the Federal Government to, without any further delay, facilitate the return and reintegration of these Nigerians to their Communities.”

Meanwhile, the Southern and Middle Belt leaders praised Nigerian youths for their courage and astuteness in expressing their interest in the future of this country and called on them not to become discouraged by some of the seeming outcomes.

Southern, Middle BeltThe communiqué reads, “SMBLF strongly urges the Nation’s Judiciary to be aware that all Nigerians are watching with very keen interest the ongoing judicial processes at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal as well as various election tribunals across the country.

The Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed made this known on Wednesday in Abuja.

Mohammed also noted that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) hasn’t been dissolved

Speaking with state house correspondents, he said: “I just want to make this clarification. While we were at the chambers there was a false breaking news that the federal executive council has been dissolved, which is not correct,” Lai said.

“As a matter of fact, we have been directed by the president that we should all go back and return to our offices. So it is not true that the federal executive council has been dissolved, it is still very much alive.

The new buildings are Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Federal Secretariat in Yenagoa, Ebele Okeke Federal Secretariat in Awka, and Malam Yahaya Gusau Federal Secretariat in Gusau.

President Buhari will not approve 65-year workers’ retirement age – Keyamo

The Minister of State for Labour, Employment and Productivity, Festus Keyamo, has said that outgoing president, Buhari will not approve the newly proposed 65-year retirement age for Nigerian workers.

Keyamo made this known in an interview with pressmen on Monday in Abuja.

Recall that the Nigeria Labour Congress, through its National President, Joe Ajaero, during the 2023 Workers’ Day celebrations in Abuja called on the government to increase the retirement age for civil servants in the country from 60  to 65 years.

Ajaero had also called for a general review of core civil servants’ salaries to narrow the gap between other civil servants’ emoluments and those in other segments of the public service, saying the extension of years of service should go around as it was being done in other sectors of the public service in the country.

“We are, therefore, demanding that the age of retirement and length of service in the entire public service, including the civil service, be reviewed upward to 65 years of age and 40 years of service, ” he had said.

But Keyamo told pressmen that an increase in service years will be the call of the next administration.

“The process to effect that change to 65 years (if it is accepted by the Federal Government) is a process that cannot be completed before the end of the tenure of Buhari.  So, I guess the new administration will have to deal with that,” the minister stated.
