2023: Buhari speaks on anointing a candidate to succeed him

President Muhammadu Buhari has finally spoken on not having an anointed candidate to succeed him in Aso Rock in 2023,

Expectedly, the President told Nigerians he does not have any preferred, or anointed candidate for the job, assuring that he was going to ensure a level playing field for all.

He nevertheless promised to handover power to whoever is elected by the masses in 2023.

Buhari made this known while fielding questions from journalists after observing the Eid-el-Fitr prayers in Abuja on yesterday.

Meanwhile President Buhari while also answering questions on security urged security agencies to redouble efforts in the fight against insecurity.

“We’ll continue to make the environment secure, especially when the rainy season is coming, so that farmers can go back to their farms and we wouldn’t have problems of food security.

“Heads of the services — army, navy, air force, the inspector-general of police, and so on — are very much aware of the situation. It’s their duty to know where the terrorists are and eliminate them,” he said.

Join me to tackle insecurity – President Buhari cries out

President Muhammadu Buhari, has called on well meaning Nigerians and politicians regardless of party affiliations to keep elections differences aside and join him in his effort to tackle insecurity bedeviling the country.

President Buhari made this statement when speaking at an Iftar dinner with members of the business community and the leadership of political parties in Abuja.

Buhari described insecurity as a ‘‘common enemy’’ bedeviling the country and prayed it’s tackled head on.

“Without mass, popular support to our hard-working Armed Forces, it will take us much longer to finish off the successful war we are waging against terrorism, banditry and kidnapping. Our country must be kept safe for progress and prosperity to be entrenched.

‘‘I look forward to seeing the reflection of this spirit in the relationship between the parties and the government, especially as the electioneering season will soon be upon us,’’ Buhari said.

The President recounted that last week, the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had a tremendous success at its meeting, ending with a clear message that the party will continue to push for the creation of democratic principles at all levels.

He added, ‘‘Today, we can proudly say that we have a political system that allows political parties of all views and persuasions, reflecting the diversity of our nation to co-exist, and contest for elections at all levels of government without fear or institutional bias and pressure’’.

On ease of doing business in Nigeria, Buhari told captains of industry and political leaders at the dinner that his administration had done exceedingly well in improving the business climate, urging the private sector to complement the government’s effort in poverty reduction and job creation for the young people.

He said, ‘‘No administration has done as much as we have done in the creation of a climate best suited for business, big and small, to thrive.

‘‘The ease of doing business index that is globally recognized has acknowledged that the ease with which business is carried out in the country has never been better than it’s today. We will continue to make it better.

‘‘We’ll equally continue to count on the support of the private sector to improve economic growth and create new job opportunities for our teeming population.

‘‘Employment is critical to the stability and prosperity of our country. Government and the private sector, working together, have an opportunity to transform the lives of people in ways that was hard to imagine in the past.’’

Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, the National Chairman of APC urged leaders of political parties to make firm commitments towards peaceful and successful 2023 general elections.

Adamu said as leaders, leadership demands that they take responsibility in ensuring peace and stability and inspiring the party faithful and Nigerians to conform to the laws of land in matters relating to electioneering and the elections.

Speaking on behalf of leaders of other political parties, the Chairman of Action Democratic Party (ADP) and Coordinator Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Engr. Yusuf Yabagi, who described the President as a true democrat, said the Iftar event and the invitation by the President has introduced ‘‘credibility, respect and admiration in the polity’’.

He said, ‘‘The fact that political leaders of various political parties are sitting with you today speaks volumes that you are truly a democrat and believe in the project of growing democracy in this country.”

2023: Osinbajo reveals what he learnt under president Buhari

Nigeria’s current vice President Yemi Osinbajo has given details of what his principal President Muhammadu Buhari told him about the Presidency of Nigeria.

Osinbajo made this revelation on Monday during his visit to Akure the Ondo state capital to meet with Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

Osinbajo was full of praises for Buhari for assigning key responsibilities to him since the All Progressives Congress (APC) assumed power in 2015.

The VP further commended the President for his “open mindedness and generosity”

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) recalls many things he learnt as the Acting president when the president Buhari was away on medical trips.

“Even people in government will never come across and I gained a lot of experience on that account.

“Many times, the President, when he was away, said pointedly to me that: Look, I don’t want to feter your discretion in any way.

“As Acting President, you are president. Make sure you are fair and just. Don’t refer anything to me, don’t ask me any questions. Just do whatever you need to do.”

The vice president noted that it would be an injustice for him to have learnt a lot and not put them into use.

No individual can claim he has a solution to the challenges facing the nation- Obasanjo

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has said Nigerians traveling are no longer safe on the road, on the train, and at the airport, adding that no individual can claim he has a solution to the challenges facing the nation.

Obasanjo was reacting to the recent Kaduna train attack wherein eight persons were reported dead and many sustained injuries.

He spoke while he played host to a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant, Dr Ugochukwu Williams, at his Penthouse residence within the premises of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, Ogun State.

He called for concerted efforts to stem the tide of insecurity in Nigeria, regretting that the Buhari administration had been overwhelmed by the situation.

However, he charged Nigerians not to allow the present situation to overwhelm the country.

“The situation we are in this country is not a situation where one man will say yes, he has a solution unless we are deceiving ourselves. I believe we need to sit down collectively and look at the situation,” the Balogun Owu.

Obasanjo described the situation as one “where you are not safe on the road, you are not safe in the train, you are not safe at the airport.”

“That shows a very serious situation,” the ex-President lamented.

He suggested that “all right-thinking Nigerians must know that we have a situation that has overwhelmed the present administration.”

  • Gov El-Rufai promises to engage foreign mercenaries, if FG fails to stop terror attacks in Kaduna

Gov El-Rufai promises to engage foreign mercenaries, if FG fails to stop terror attacks in Kaduna

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State has said if the Federal Government does not end the ongoing spate of terror attacks in the region, he would employ the service of foreign mercenaries to fight against terrorists.

El-Rufai disclosed this to State House correspondents after he visited the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, to update him on the happenings since the attack.

According to him, four others of the seven Northwestern states—Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, Sokoto may join him to hire foreign mercenaries.

“Why is it that up till now, the security has not gone to kill them? Where are our soldiers? Why have they not done it? That is why I have come to see Mr President. And also I have said that if these actions are not taken, it becomes a must for us as governors to take measures to protect our citizens, even if it means we will import mercenaries from outside the country to do it. If our soldiers fail, I swear to God, we will do that. This issue has gotten to an alarming state,” he said.

The governor pointed out that Monday night’s attack on the Abuja-Kaduna train, which left eight passengers dead and several others injured, would have been avoided if the federal government had heeded his earlier warnings.

The governor, who spoke in a brief interview conducted in the Hausa language, said he got the assurances of Buhari to end the ongoing attacks in a few months.

He warned that the attackers, who he identified as Boko Haram elements, could hold the entire nation to ransom if the military failed to, as a matter of urgency, storm their forest hideouts and clear them in simultaneous attacks.

On the identity of the assailants, El-Rufai said the train attack was not done by the terrorists known as bandits who have been roaming the Northwest for a few years now, but by Boko Haram members.

He said: “To us, this happened because we have consistently written letters to the Nigerian Railway Corporation. We wrote them twice to stop night trips because we had a security report that Boko Haram had entered and they were planning to blow up the train. We wrote to them twice but they didn’t listen.

“Secondly, the Air Force, in response to that security report, went and established a base at Katari, where helicopters can land and refuel so that if anything happens, they can quickly respond. But that cannot work at night because some helicopters cannot even fly at night. That is why we advised the Federal Government that the night train should be stopped.

“We suggested that the last trip should leave Abuja by 4:00pm so that they could arrive in Kaduna before nightfall and the same for the last trip from Kaduna, but our advice was not taken. It took the security agents over an hour to get to the scene when the attack happened because it was night. It would have been faster in the afternoon.”

The former Federal Capital Territory minister also noted that the attack was “not the bandits that we are used to. These came prepared. They have planned this attack for long to the extent that they know the first-class coach where they will get the big personalities.”

On the response of the Northwest to the attacks he said, “We have been suggesting that these forests where these people are, we should go there and bomb the forests for everyone in the forest to be killed. Honestly, if this is not done, this banditry in Niger, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi and Sokoto will not end.

“This thing can consume the entire Nigeria, because the way these people are getting money, the way they boast that they don’t fear authorities, they don’t fear the military, I don’t know why up till now the Nigerian military will not enter these forests and deal with these people.”

El-Rufai also noted that if the military takes no proactive response, he would hire mercenaries to do the job.

“Why do we always wait for them to strike before we go after them? Why can’t we go to where they are and kill them? We know where they are. We have the maps as the military knows, the policemen know and everyone knows. The DSS is giving us a report every time: see where Dogo Gide is, see what he is planning.

“Why is it that up till now, the security operatives has not gone to kill them? Where are our soldiers? Why have they not done it? That is why I have come to see Mr President.

“And also I have said that if these actions are not taken, it becomes a must for us as governors to take measures to protect our citizens, even if it means we will import mercenaries from outside the country to do it. If our soldiers fail, I swear to God, we will do that,” he threatened.

He noted that the President has assured him that the attacks will be brought to an end within months.

  • IPOB chooses naming second River Niger Bridge “Achuzie Bridge”

IPOB chooses naming second River Niger Bridge “Achuzie Bridge”

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has kicked against the move to name the second River Niger Bridge after President Muhammadu Buhari, choosing it to be called “Achuzie Bridge” or any other accomplished Igbo patriots.

The group, in a statement by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, said it rejects naming the bridge after Buhari, saying South-East youths have been slaughtered by security agents with reckless abandon under Buhari’s watch.

IPOB noted that no Igboman has been named after any big project in the North.

The group said, “Under his watch, terrorists masquerading as Fulani herdsmen have invaded our communities killing innocent men and women after destroying our farms with their cows.”

The group also debunked the allegation by the Minister of Works, Babatunde Fashola, that IPOB disturbed the construction of the second Niger Bridge.

It said, “This is another lie from the pit of hell. We want to challenge Fashola to substantiate his claims. Did IPOB in any way physically interfere with the construction of the bridge by either directly or indirectly hindering any worker either foreign or local handling the project?

“Fashola should know that if not for IPOB that has ensured security in the South East, the workers of Julius Berger would have run away from the site a long time ago. If the second Niger Bridge is being done in the North, Boko Haram, Ansaru, ISWAP, and the pampered bandits would have chased them away. That shows them that South East is more peaceful than the North.”

It also stated that “sycophants” in the Buhari administration derive joy in calling IPOB names to deceive the President.

The statement read in part, “South East has more credible names and more important persons who the Federal Government can name the second Niger bridge after. We have a galaxy of accomplished Africans like Chief Chinua Achebe, Chu Okongwu, Cyprain Ekwensi, Alexander Ekwueme, Chief Michael Okpara, Dr. Akanu Ibiam, Mbonu Ojike, Chief Kenneth Dike, Eni Njoku, Dora Akunyili, Dr Sam Mbakwe, Achuzie, Phillips Efiong and the living legend Chief Amaechi Mbazuruike.

“All these names mentioned above are eminently qualified for second Niger Bridge to be named after them. The Second Niger Bridge was awarded in 1979 by the Shehu Shagari regime and since then, no administration found it worthy to execute it but IPOB agitation for self-determination pushed this APC administration to reluctantly embark on its construction using the funds past Nigerian politicians looted and starched away in Europe.

“We are aware of the condition given by a certain European country that they will only release stolen funds starched away in their country if the funds will be channeled towards the construction of the Second Niger Bridge.

“This is what compelled the Nigerian government to embark on the Bridge project not out of love for the Igbo people of Biafra. We reject naming the bridge after Buhari when we have other better names.”
